Hey friends, Christina here — your go-to gymnast nutritionist. Today, we're diving into a super important topic that I talk about all the time with gymnasts, parents, and even coaches and healthcare providers: myths about gymnast growth + development. There are still so many fears and misunderstandings floating around when it comes to how growth, puberty, and performance intersect in our sport. And let me tell you — those fears can be loud. But they're not based in science, and they're not helping our athletes. Every athlete has a genetic timeline for puberty, and trying to delay that process through chronic under-fueling or excessive training does real damage. Bone density, heart health, fertility — all of it suffers. Puberty isn't the end of a gymnastics career — it's part of the journey. It's the foundation for long-term performance, health, and success. Let's stop fearing it. Let's start supporting gymnasts through every stage of their development with adequate fueling, realistic expectations, and evidence-based guidance. Strong, confident, and powerful after puberty? YES.So, let's break down the top 5 myths about gymnastics growth I hear over and over. In this episode you'll learn about: Understanding menstrual health in gymnastsAre gymnasts at a higher risk for injury during growth spurts? The impact of puberty on gymnast performance long term Links & Resources The Balanced Gymnast® Program for level 5-10 female gymnasts Episode 112: Is your “tiny gymnast” actually underfueled, or growing normally for them?Episode 51: No Period, No Problem for the Gymnast? I am excited to connect with Dr. Nicola Sykes today. Dr. Sykes received her Ph.D. in Computational Biology from MIT. After experiencing hypothalamic amenorrhea and discovering a shortage of information about the condition in the public domain, she wrote a comprehensive guide to help people understand it and recover. In our discussion today, we dive into the nature of hypothalamic amenorrhea and explore its physiology. We address the effects of amenorrhea on eating habits, discuss caloric restrictions, fasting, exercise, and chronic stress, clarify the distinctions between eating disorders and disordered eating, and examine the role of genetics. Dr. Sykes also explains why she does not believe in post-pill amenorrhea, and our conversation touches on differentiators with polycystic ovarian syndrome, symptoms, and lab evaluations. Given the frequent concerns from listeners about losing their menstrual cycles, this conversation with Dr. Sykes promises to be particularly valuable for those affected by prolonged fasting and similar issues. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Dr. Sykes explains what hypothalamic amenorrhea is and why it is essential for women to understand it How a lack of exercise and energy deficits can impact menstruation Why we must support our bodies with exercise and proper nutrition rather than focusing on weight loss How stress impacts the body, particularly during perimenopause and menopause Why rest and recovery are essential when doing high-intensity workouts How we need to eat enjoyable foods and focus on moderation instead of striving for an ideal standard How disordered eating differs from eating disorders The difference between hypothalamic amenorrhea and PCOS Some common symptoms of hormone imbalance The benefits of tracking menstrual and ovulation cycles Bio: Dr Sykes (formerly Rinaldi) has a PhD in computational biology from MIT. After experiencing hypothalamic amenorrhea herself and finding a lack of information about the condition in the public sphere, she set out to write a comprehensive guide to understanding the condition and how to recover. Her book, "No Period. Now What?" has helped thousands of people recover from missing periods and better understand their bodies and hormonal systems. The book has been translated into multiple languages and serves as a guide for numerous dietitians and medical professionals helping those experiencing missing periods. Dr. Jana opens up about her struggles with RED-S and underfueling, including 12 years of amenorrhea -a missing period- and bone injuries. Does gymnastics stunt growth? It's quite the hot topic and many people weigh in with their own opinions. We've even heard conflicting opinions from medical providers. It's such a big question that it's actually been investigated and researched quite a bit in the past few decades by some heavy hitters such as the International Gymnastics Federation. Some providers will give you a flippant response like, "gymnastics stunts their growth but it's fine, they'll catch up when they quit". But not growing and developing while in gymnastics should be a big red flag to parents and doctors for underfueling. We need to do our due diligence to determine whether or not they're getting enough nutrition or if something else like a hormonal issue is at play. In today's episode, I'm covering the 5 big questions I get on this topic of "does gymnastics stunt growth". Listen in to learn more. Welcome to another episode of the Period Recovery Podcast! This week, I'm thrilled to share an inspiring conversation with Katrina, a remarkable former client of mine. Katrina grew up as an athlete & never thought her active & over-achieving lifestyle was hurting her. Katrina opens up about losing her period & how she got it back in record time. She also shares all of the challenges she faced when she lost her period and the triumphant moment she reclaimed it.In our chat, Katrina shared some profound insights:Recognizing that your struggles are valid can often start when someone you love acknowledges them. It helps solidify that your feelings are real and not just a figment of your imagination. When others make judgments or comments behind your back, remember, it reflects more on them than on you. There's no obligation for you to accept or own others' perceptions of you.Cling to your core values. In moments of adversity, let your beliefs guide and ground you, reminding you of who you are and what truly matters.Join us as we navigate through these personal revelations and celebrate Katrina's journey toward healing and recovery!Enjoy this episode!Cynthia Apply for coaching w/Cynthia: https://p.bttr.to/3ybjfOb Website: https://www.periodnutritionist.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/period.nutritionistFor the full show notes - please visit my website: periodnutritionist.com
In today's episode I answer the following questions:1. Hi, I am trying to recover my period currently and have been eating around 2500 cals and been only light walking. Yet I still lift about 3 times a week for no longer than a hour. I'm scared to stop lifting and for all the weight to just turn into fat rather than muscle. Do you think the 3 times a week lifting it really doing to set back my recovery?2. What's worse? Walking a lot (around 1-1:30 hr) or an hour bodyweight workout for a day?3. I have a question. Do I have to eat more food, even when I am not hungry, just to get my period back, or should I just listen to my hunger and fullness cues?Learn about our Rest Retreatshttp://thehasociety.com/retreatJoin The HA Societyhttp://thehasociety.com/joinWork 1:1 with us to get your period backhttp://thehasociety.com/coachingVisit us on YouTubehttps://youtube.com/c/danisheriffFollow us on IGhttp://instagram.com/thehasocietyhttp://instagram.com/danisheriffThe Content is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. One of the biggest myths in the gymnastics world is that it's "normal" for a gymnast to not get their period or to lose it...All the time parents are told things like: “Oh it's normal for a gymnast to not have their period, they just workout too much” “She may need to quit gymnastics to get her period”“It would be better for her to not have her period until after the Olympics”All of these couldn't be further from the truth. A female's period is what is called the "fifth vital sign"; it's an essential sign the body gives us that can indicate it's getting enough nutrition to support health and longevity in the sport. In this episode you'll learn: What's normal and what's not for periodsWhen to be concerned if your gymnast hasn't had her period (or has lost it)Why birth control is a bad "bandaid" for a missing periodHow to support your gymnast's healthLinks & Resources The Balanced Gymnast® Program for level 5-10 female gymnasts Podcast Episode 4: RED-SConnect with Christina on Instagram @the.gymnast.nutritionist or support@christinaandersonrdn.com

You might think you're at your peak fitness - you're exercising regularly, maybe even competing or running marathons, you're strict on your nutrition and perhaps you've even lost weight but you're periods have gone? In 2019, she completed my PhD in University College Dublin in collaboration with Sport Ireland Institute. The area of research was Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport and its relationship with injury, illness, health and performance. This episode covers:- RED-S : what is it and who is affected? - Health effects of not having a menstrual cycle- How to get your period back- RED-S in males - Matching your nutrition to your training demands- Specific nutritional requirements for female athletes- Common signs of under-fuelling - What to eat when recovering from an injury- Advice for nutrition undergrads who want to do postgraduate research.
