Melinda Williams: God's goodness in grief, parenting through crisis, & working together in ministry

Whit's End: Real People. Hard Questions.

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2025 42:17

In this raw and honest conversation, you'll get to meet Melinda Williams, my friend and co-worker. She has recently joined Woven staff as the ministry coordinator and brought a multitude of skills (I'm lacking) to this new position. We laugh about the quirks of working alongside each other, while seeking to create wise boundaries and talk through tensions. Melinda shares about seasons of grief and loss throughout her life, and opens up about a particularly challenging season she walked through in her family over the past 5 years. This one is a tear-jerker, but it is oh-so-refreshing and important as we dig into questions like - How do we experience God's goodness even in tremendous pain? How can we think rightly about God's sovereignty when our world seemingly falls apart? Can we work well as friends with vastly different gifts? What does it look like to honor God as we parent through unknown territory? Social media handle: @melindawilliamstxcoNoteworthy Quotes:“I think that when you're close that way and any one of you is struggling, all the rest of you are not totally ok.”“You can't always get in front of everything. I think that as a parent, you think you can.” “The fact of the matter is there's no playbook on this stuff.” “I don't think this happened to us because we weren't doing something right. I don't think this happened to us because our child did something wrong. I think it was a perfect storm. I think the Lord allowed it to happen. And I think that He walked with us every step of the way, and we could have chosen to see that or not see that.” “Sometimes, honestly, sometimes I would be too fraught to even pray. Knowing prayer is what we need the most, and I don't even have the words.”“I could sense myself honestly questioning, ‘Did I think God did this?' and ultimately I kept coming back to, I think God allowed it. And that He's sad like I'm sad.”“If someone's not letting you in, it's not that you have to go barge the door down, but you also can't turn a blind eye and put your head in the sand and not dig deeper with some people. Because when the struggle is happening, everybody needs community. We were created for community. And so, if you're not getting that, it's going to be ten times worse.” “There is never a risk-free guarantee with anything when we are following the Lord. Really, He is the constant. He is the one who is going to be there after we're dead. He is the Alpha and the Omega. Really, other than that, there is really not a lot guaranteed.” Verses: Psalm 34:17Philippians 4:7

Job quality is vital not only for workers, but also for small businesses and communities. Yet too many jobs today miss the mark on one of the key characteristics of a good job: providing enough pay to live on. Only 56% of full-time workers in the United States make enough money to cover their families basic needs. This problem is particularly acute at small businesses. Nearly 60% of low-wage workers work at businesses with fewer than 100 employees, and 35% of low-wage workers work at micro-businesses with fewer than 10 employees. Small businesses also struggle to address other characteristics of a good job, like providing adequate benefits, stable scheduling, and a positive work culture.Recognizing this context, in 2022, the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program (EOP) launched the Shared Success project, funded by the Gates Foundation. The project supports 11 community development financial institutions (CDFIs) across the country to integrate job quality support into their small business services with the goal of improving job quality for small business employees and building business resilience. Three years later, EOP has seen how grantees have used innovative approaches to recruit, advise, and incentivize small businesses to improve job quality. This discussion is the second of two panels from our event, “How Good Jobs Support Small Business Success: Lessons from the Shared Success Demonstration,” which took place on May 21, 2025 at the Aspen Institute's office in Washington DC. Our speakers include Viola Mai (Director of Development and Impact, ICA Fund), Betsy Biemann (Chief Executive Officer, Coastal Enterprises, Inc.), Barbara Magnoni (President, EA Consultants), and moderator Maureen Conway (Vice President, The Aspen Institute; Executive Director, Economic Opportunities Program).During this event, we heard from leaders of CDFIs, their small business clients, philanthropic supporters, and other experts, and we discussed the lessons learned from Shared Success, ranging from practical tips about strategies for engaging small businesses in discussions of job quality to the range of job quality improvements CDFI clients helped their businesses make. We hope you enjoy this important discussion on small business support strategies that help businesses and workers both thrive, achieving Shared Success. For more information, including a transcript, speaker bios, and additional resources, visit our event page. And add our first panel, “Driving Innovation in Small Business Lending: Examples of How Small Business and CDFIs are Working Together to Advance Job Quality,” to your podcast queue. For highlights from this discussion, subscribe to EOP's YouTube channel.Join us on Zoom on June 26 for our webinar on Advising Small Businesses on Job Quality: Lessons from CDFIs.

Slam the Gavel welcomes Theodora Antar to the podcast. She is a law student, mother, notary, and nationwide legal advocate based in Connecticut. She is the founder of Pro Legal USA, a platform dedicated to exposing injustice and advocating for families impacted by corruption in the legal system.     Theodora's advocacy is deeply personal. As a mother of two daughters, Angelina (age 5) and Julianna (age 10), she has experienced firsthand the trauma of family court corruption. On May 25, 2023, her youngest daughter was illegally removed from her care in a Connecticut court proceeding overseen by Judge Jane Kupson Grossman, where Theodora was denied due process. Less than a year later, on March 9, 2024, her eldest daughter was taken by Port Authority Police at JFK International Airport after they enforced an unserved ex parte custody order, again issued by the same judge. Theodora has not seen Angelina since March 7, 2024, or Julianna since March 9, 2024.     Her fight for justice began after she reported the sexual abuse of a minor—a disclosure that led to ongoing government retaliation and a campaign of persecution against her by Connecticut authorities. For two years, Theodora has tirelessly advocated for constitutional rights, government accountability, and child welfare, using her legal training and personal experience to support others facing similar injustices.     Through Pro Legal USA and her public advocacy, Theodora works to shine a light on systemic failures, empower other parents, and demand reform in family courts nationwide. Additionally, Rahn shares insights from his research at ABT Associates on social capital, recounting a project in rural South Dakota where community bonds and local agency led to innovative economic development. He connects these lessons to his current work in Boston's Nubian Square, underscoring the power of community-driven efforts and the importance of investing in places such as Roxbury with deep cultural and historical significance. Rahn will be recognized on May 7th as one of the 2025 SCI Idealist Award recipients. Join SCI on May 7th to celebrate Rahn!

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

During a trip to Brazil with a short-term missions team, we helped construct a church building in the Amazon jungle. The foundation had already been laid. We needed to assemble the church like a giant LEGO set, which included putting in the supporting columns, sliding in the concrete walls and windows, raising the steel beams for the roof, placing all the tiles on the roof, and painting the walls. Some people were concerned because we were traveling to such a remote area during the monsoon season. They wondered if we could build the church in time. But by God’s grace the intense rain didn’t fall while we worked. We felt His strength and our workforce increased when a few locals helped us build. Despite various obstacles, we got the job done in record time. When Nehemiah and the Israelites rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls, they faced many obstacles. When their enemies found out they were repairing the wall, they were furious and insulted them (Nehemiah 4:1-3). But Nehemiah prayed and the people persevered together. “We rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart” (v. 6). When their foes threatened to attack, the Israelites prayed and kept guard as they worked (vv. 7-23). They rebuilt the wall in fifty-two days. Sometimes we’re faced with a daunting task. Obstacles appear in our way, and we and our brothers and sisters in Christ can lose hope. But times like this can be a triumphant moment, with the help of God. Trust Him to hold off the rainstorms and look to Him to overcome.
