Leah and Dr. Shelly, both occupational therapists who have either earned or are working toward dual certification as BCBAs, join me to talk about the power and challenges of blending these two worlds. Believe it or not, there aren't even statistics on how many dual-certified professionals are out there—but the impact of this crossover is clear. Their work centers on collaboration with families and other professionals, finding common ground between OT and ABA.We talk about the funding and system barriers that can make integration tough, and how learning to understand each other's “jargon” helps break those walls down. As Dr. Shelly says, OTs and BCBAs are often working toward the same goals—they just use different words. Sometimes, you have to “massage the message” so everyone can connect and understand.Dr. Shelly also shares insight into the business and insurance side of implementation, while Leah highlights the importance of spreading the word about the tools ABA offers. Their message is simple: put the egos aside, keep listening, and stay open to learning from each other.#autism #speechtherapyWhat's Inside:The growing overlap between OT and ABAWhy collaboration starts with learning each other's “language”Navigating funding and system barriers that limit integrationPutting egos aside to focus on shared goals and learning from one anotherMentioned In This Episode:Is This My Child?: Sensory Integration SimplifiedCircle Care ServicesThe Autism Roundtable Podcast - Circle Care ServicesMy BCBA Life Podcast - Circle Care Services Join the ABA Speech Connection ABA Speech: HomeRecoverycast: Mental Health & Addiction Recovery StoriesReal talk, real recovery, actually entertaining. On our perpetual quest for bigger, better, faster, wealthier, and stronger, we're led to believe that more is the answer – more gadgets, advanced technology, connections, resources, money, entertainment, etc. But what if there was a case to be made the answer to fulfillment is not in more but in less? My guest today, Dewyane Noel, makes that case. We talk about why less is more, how to reduce noise, chaos, and distraction in the modern world, the value of a hard day's work, what we can learn about human behavior through good horsemanship, and why good men ride good horses. Author Jean Twenge, Ph.D., explains the implications of four different generations working together. As Gen Zers increasingly join millennials, Gen Xers and a shrinking cohort of baby boomers in the workforce, their varying needs, attitudes and aptitudes are driving workplace changes.· Generational shifts are reshaping the workplace: Organizations are navigating the most pronounced generational transition in decades, with differing expectations around leadership styles, collaboration and work-life harmony.· Delayed life milestones impact real estate demand: Trends like marrying later in life, postponing homeownership and having fewer children are catalyzing demand for adaptable, amenity-rich properties.· Technology is a key driver of generational change: From smartphones to social media, tech has fundamentally altered how each generation communicates, works and interacts—creating both opportunities and challenges for office culture and productivity.· Hybrid work reflects generational preferences: The way different generations value in-person collaboration, flexibility and autonomy gives hybrid work models staying power.· Empathy is essential for cross-generational leadership: Understanding the distinct values and experiences of each generation, and applying that knowledge in how you communicate and set policy, can build stronger connections with colleagues.

A safety ranking means little if it doesn't match how people actually feel while living their lives. We unpack Cape Coral's recognition as one of Florida's safest cities by focusing on the daily experience of residents: running errands without fear, walking to the car without worry, and raising families in neighborhoods where people look out for one another. That lived sense of security comes from a clear vision, a mission built on partnership, and values that show up in every interaction. We take you inside the model that guides our work: be the safest city in Florida, and get there by partnering with the community to deliver the highest level of safety for all. You'll hear how real conversations shape policy more than surveys do, how doorbell camera clips can be the missing piece in a case timeline, and why solvability rates rise when people feel heard. We also talk about the power of ownership: many of our officers live here, navigate the same roads, visit the same parks, and bring that personal stake to every call for service. It's “your police department,” not just “the police department.”We don't ignore small problems that can grow into big ones. That includes a candid look at risky biking and e‑bike behavior—wheelies in traffic, riding three or four across, and blocking lanes. We outline the plan: educate first, enforce next, and keep kids safe while protecting everyone on the road. Our Community Oriented Policing unit is coordinating with businesses on trespass authority, and we encourage residents to call when they see unsafe behavior so we can address it in the moment. The throughline is simple: early reporting, shared information, and steady service keep fear off the front of people's minds.Proud of the progress, focused on the work. If this resonates, subscribe, share with a neighbor, and leave a review to help others find the show. What safety topic should we tackle next?

However, numerous individuals, agency workers, and organizations like us are working faithfully to help support and uplift the children and families within that system. Our guest today knows this system intimately, as he has worked within it for over 40 years. Norm Suire worked first at Elgin Mental Health Center before transitioning to the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). With a lifetime of experience in child welfare, Norm brings such wisdom and honesty about both the joys and challenges of this work. He is also a husband and father of three sons and a proud grandfather of five. This week we turn our attention from Austin to the nation's capitol, because the center of the policy universe right now is the government shutdown. The decisions of Congress in the coming weeks will impact every one of us. Joining us for the conversation this week is friend of the program, Min. Christian Watkins, a Texas transplant currently serving as the Government Relations Advocate with NETWORK Lobby. Christian has been in the middle of these conversations, providing training for faith based advocates, and just before we recorded today, he was part of a rally that included faith leaders and members of Congress calling for Congress to protect our healthcare. Spoiler… we need more faith leaders and elected officials doing exactly that across the country. Christian joins us, still in his clergy collar from the rally, to give us a shutdown 101 and talk to us about the stakes related to health care and give us some advocacy marching orders. The northside of St. Louis looks like a wasteland following the May 16th tornado, and residents say they fear it will remain this way if the government doesn't provide the resources to rebuild. Some say the money they received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency wasn't enough, and others simply want the city to put its money where its mouth is. St. Louis Public Radio's Lacretia Wimbley reports that while city leaders agree that things should be moving faster, they say they're doing the best they can to disperse limited resources.

We're joined by the CEOs of Des Moines Water Works and Central Iowa Water Works, who provide a utility perspective on what it takes to ensure clean, safe drinking water for over 600,000 residents. They explain what nitrate removal looks like in practice, why one winter alone cost more than $540,000, and how proposed new facilities could require investments of up to $183 million. From the agricultural side, we explore the progress farmers have made in reducing erosion, improving nitrogen use efficiency (down from ~1.2 lbs per bushel in the 1990s to ~0.7 lbs or less today), and adopting conservation practices like no-till, cover crops, and prairie strips. We also look at the barriers—like cost, adoption rates, and weather extremes—that keep nitrate reductions from moving as fast as water utilities and regulators would like. The conversation highlights the drivers of change, from climate volatility to increased corn production, and examines the broader economic context: agriculture still contributes over $53 billion to Iowa's GDP and supports 1 in 5 jobs statewide. Any solutions must balance environmental protection with economic sustainability for farm families and rural communities.Ultimately, this discussion is about bridging the divide. Both farmers and utilities are making major investments in infrastructure—whether that's treatment plants or conservation practices. The question is: how do we build trust, share data, and create partnerships that deliver measurable water quality improvements while protecting Iowa's agricultural economy and heritage? This episode gives listeners a nuanced look at the nitrate issue beyond the headlines, showing how public health, environmental stewardship, and agricultural productivity can coexist with the right mix of science, collaboration, and leadership.
