In this episode, Sarah and Stef explore the topic of why they decided to make this a rare two-part series. Stef sparked the idea due to a client's suggestion to dive deeper into the emotional aspects tied to realizing one can't diet anymore. They chat about their personal experiences and how differently they feel about the inability to diet. Stef shares that she often felt anger, stemming from the frustrating feeling of being controlled by an uncontrollable force. Sarah, on the other hand, felt sadness and a bit of unease about not being able to diet, describing a conflict between what she believed and what she felt. The discussion then shifts to the process and emotions tied to this realization. Stef talks about how her next phase of evolution might be becoming softer with herself, while Sarah contemplates if she should be more disciplined. They both recognize that regardless of the approach, the feeling of trying their best despite obstacles is very sobering. Both hosts touch on the grief associated with recognizing they can't diet anymore—an emotion that only surfaced fully during their recovery journeys. They discuss how memories of past attempts come rushing back, creating a whirlwind of feelings and self-reflection. Join our support community. Sarah and Stef delve into the complex emotions around dieting and the struggles of non-diet living. To kick things off, Sarah brings up the topic of feeling stuck between wanting to diet and feeling like you can't, even if you wanted to. This sets the stage for a thoughtful discussion about how dieting, and the decision to step away from it, evokes a range of emotions—from failure to empowerment. Stef offers personal anecdotes and client stories, revealing how the dieting mindset is often ingrained in us from a young age, making it a tough cycle to break. She highlights the difference between making an active decision to stop dieting and feeling like you simply can't keep up with it anymore. Throughout the episode, both Sarah and Stef share their own journeys and how they moved from a place of restrictive eating to embracing a non-diet lifestyle. Along the way, they touch on common pitfalls, like fantasizing about the benefits of dieting, only to be reminded of its psychological toll. The duo also explores how important it is to find a middle ground. This is not about completely giving up or indulging without thought but about finding a balanced, mindful approach to eating that nurtures both body and soul. One standout moment is when they discuss the concept of agency—and the sticky truth that empowerment can indeed come from weight control -- but it can also come from self-alliance. In this episode, Sarah and Stef dive into the topic of food permission, addressing the intriguing question: “Can you really eat whatever you want whenever you want?” They share personal insights and client experiences to unpack the concept of intuitive eating, discussing the common misunderstandings and the nuanced approach necessary for true food freedom. They emphasize the importance of balancing permission with consideration, understanding emotional and mental restrictions, and the role of gentle nutrition. They also highlight how different individuals might need to approach intuitive eating uniquely based on their personal history and relationship with food. With warmth and compassion, they guide listeners through the complexities of healing their relationship with food, making it clear that there's no one-size-fits-all answer, but rather a journey of self-discovery and self-compassion. Happy Satiated Saturday! I've had people close to me this past year finally receive their ADHD diagnosis as an adult after struggling since they were kids with ADHD behaviors. I witnessed how much compassion came in and a profound deep understanding of their patterns. One of the main characteristics of ADHD is having lower dopamine levels. I've previously discussed how those also navigating a trauma response in their body experience lower dopamine levels. Dopamine is crucial in feeling pleasure, motivation, focus, mood regulation, decision making, and alertness. What happens in the body from trauma and genetic factors is that there is less circulating dopamine increasing the chances of binge eating or emotional eating to get the dopamine the body needs to feel good.In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I talk with Rebecca King, Registered Dietitian, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and the founder of The ADHD Nutritionist, about the connection between ADHD and binge eating, understanding the role of dopamine in binge eating, creating a dopamine menu, diverse hunger cues that don't show up as stomach gurgles, how masking can increase binge eating behaviors, the importance of self-care and aftercare around binges You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/binge-eating-and-the-adhd-dopamine-connection(Heads up that there was some static on this recording so it can be supportive to have the transcript pulled up for this one to follow along with all the amazing gems shared!)With Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Rebecca here:Website: https://sites.google.com/adhdnutritionistllc.com/smallgroupcoaching/home Discovery call: https://p.bttr.to/2FUkb1jInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhd.nutritionist/Support the Show.Keep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/discount/STEPHANIEMARA?rfsn=7433250.c99684Use my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. www.bensound.co...

So often diet culture disconnects us from our bodies and from having a peaceful relationship with food. In today's episode, I talk with registered dietitian and therapist, Alice Baker, MSRD CEDS-C LMHC LPC LDN, about shedding unhelpful beliefs from diet culture. Alice Baker has over 27 years' experience in the field of eating disorders. She currently sees clients in private practice as a dietitian and/or therapist, facilitates support groups, presents locally and nationally, and supervises new dietitians in the eating disorder field. In my time with Alice, we talk about the normalization of disordered eating in our culture, the infiltration of diet culture in the church, and how a non-diet approach is compatible with health. Thankfully, Alice also gives us some practical ideas on how we can move toward wholeness in our relationship with food and our bodies amidst diet culture. Buy Melissa L. Friends, I'm excited to share this episode with you all because it's on a subject I've been struggling with recently. We're going to talk about movement. My relationship with movement has gone up and down, if you've been listening to this podcast from the beginning, and part of the struggle is that there's part of me that still connects exercise to weight loss and that makes it feel a bit like punishment. So I keep researching movement and one of the people I've met who has been wonderful at helping and coaching me through this disconnect is my guest today: Kim Hagle. Kim is a size-inclusive fitness specialist, a non-diet nutritionist, and a body image coach who founded Radiant Vitality Wellness. She and her company offer weight neutral fitness training and transformational coaching and she also hosts the Power in Motion podcast on which I've been a guest! I'm so glad you get to meet her today, she is amazing. The first thing Kim shares is her personal journey with fitness, sports, movement, and dieting and how it led her eventually to making her fitness career weight neutral and size inclusive. She had some powerful revelations in her own life that helped her get here. In our conversation, Kim and I talk about how most fitness facilities are not seat up for people in larger bodies, from the physical space to the imagery to the mirrors, and how we need to not assume everyone entering a fitness center has weight loss as a goal. Kim speaks to how movement can incorporate anything that gets us moving and contributes to health in our bodies, what clothing we can wear to work out so we don't have to feel pressured into tiny spandex, having flexibility built into training goals, and the overall joy we should find in movement. Kim is warm and supportive and has helped change my perspective a lot, which I appreciate. Talking with her is so inspirational to me and I hope you all find similar inspiration from this episode. __About Kim Hagle:Kim Hagle (she/her) is a Size Inclusive Fitness Specialist, Non-Diet Nutritionist, Body Image Coach and founder of Radiant Vitality Wellness.__Resources mentioned in this episode:Size Inclusive Training Academy__Learn more about Kim Hagle:Website: RadiantVitality.caPodcast: The Power in Motion PodcastInstagramFacebookYouTubeLinkedInPinterestLearn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

If the pressure from wellness culture leaves you feeling fearful and anxious because of its unattainable standards, it's probably safe to say that it's not truly promoting well-being. And if you've invested time, money, or energy in the myths and promises of wellness culture, you probably haven't seen much ROI on those either. In this episode, I'm kicking off 2024 with a guest who needs little introduction-Registered Dietitian and author of The Wellness Trap, Christy Harrison. We are taking a deep dive into why clean eating became so trendy (and dangerous), why we are drawn to the fear-based messaging of wellness culture, as well as why it's so irrelevant to such a large population of the world. If you've been craving an approach to food and body image that is more gentle, nuanced and includes priorities like mental health, community, and the understanding of socioeconomic influences on health disparities, you won't want to miss this episode! To learn more about Christy, check out her website at https://christyharrison.com/ or follow her on Instagram @chr1styharrison or join her free membership: https://rethinkingwellness.substack.com/Looking for a place to learn more about midlife, menopause nutrition, and intuitive eating? Quick trigger warning here: lots of talk today about diets and the scale. If you're not up for it, no worries--just skip it. It's January, and you know what that means. It's diet season. Ugh....I turned on the tv this morning and saw an ad for a diet program within five seconds. About one minute later, there was one for a weight loss medication. Yep. We'll be completely inundated with ads for diet programs, gyms, medications, etc. for the next few weeks. And it's hard not to get dragged into all of this, isn't it? I sometimes have parts that will think, "Maybe we should do that" when they see this information nonstop. It's hard not to think that. But this podcast isn't about diet culture and whether or not you should be dieting or focusing on weight. It's about one aspect of diet culture: the scale. In a new series called "Let's Talk About...," we'll be focusing on various topics related to emotional eating, IFS, diet culture, body image, etc. These are the topics that have been on my list for awhile, so I'm getting to them this season. And whether or not to step on that scale has been on that list for quite awhile now. On this week's podcast, we talk a little about the history of the scale, and then move into a discussion on whether or not to weigh yourself. And of course the answer to that comes down to parts. Who is the part that's leading you to the scale? Why are they wanting you to weigh yourself? And more importantly, what are they afraid will happen if you don't step on that scale? We also talk a bit about the polarizations within many of our systems related to weight and the scale, and how the scale is related to the this idea that we can and should be controlling our bodies. We end on how to approach the scale at your physician's office. So if you have a complicated relationship with the scale (who doesn't?), this one's for you! And if you're an IFS or IFS-informed therapist or practitioner who's curious about how to help your clients with food and body issues, join me for the IFS and the Eating System Master Class! We'll be covering such topics as helping clients get to know their eating parts, working with polarizations, legacy burdens, body image, and Self-led eating. We'll be meeting as a group every other Monday from 12:00-2:00 pm EST starting on January 22nd, and you also get two individual consultation sessions with me over the course of the master class to use however you choose. With the start of the new year, we find ourselves in a season inundated with diet and fitness-related ads. We are being saturated with and sold the message that now is the time to change, reshape, or perfect our bodies or food intake. My hope is that today's guest will help us all detox from the current flurry of diet culture messaging and be reminded of the goodness of food and of our bodies. Lisa Diers is a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified yoga teacher who specializes in supporting eating disorder and body image recovery. Lisa has a combined over 20 years of experience in nutrition and yoga services and previously served as the National Nutrition and Yoga Director for a large national eating disorder treatment program. In our time together, Lisa and I discuss the prevalence of disordered eating, as well as what a balanced relationship with food actually looks like. Lisa also explains how nutrition and yoga can be instrumental and complementary in reconnecting with our bodies, why “carbs” and sugar aren't the fear foods diet culture makes them out to be, and offers guidance for those struggling with body image this time of year. My conversation with Lisa was like a breath of fresh air; I hope it is for you as well.Buy Melissa L. As we bid farewell to 2023, I'd like to help you redirect the panic and pressure of New Year's resolutions that may feel like they are waiting around the corner for you. I'm popping in to offer you some super practical tips for a healthier and more peaceful connection with food and your body, especially this time of year. I challenge you to give me sixteen minutes to help you see how the peace you crave is absolutely within reach. I'll share five tips that can help you make confident food decisions, that leave room for the freedom and flexibility you need to thrive in this season. Wishing you a joyous holiday season, and here's to embracing a more empowered midlife in 2024!
Do you ever have days where you start out eating fat-free for breakfast, go vegan for lunch, and end up eating keto for dinner? Food rules are so appealing and yet so confusing. The problem is that there's no “best” diet and they all have the same predictable result. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Sylvi Martin who will help us expose why so many elements of wellness culture are getting in the way of your ability to thrive and have a normal relationship with food. We'll also talk about why where you get your information matters as well as why you need to focus on adding foods to your plate instead of trying to keep them off the menu. Deb Benfield has helped hundreds of women heal their relationship with food, eating, and their bodies in her 35-year career as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. In her own aging journey, she became frustrated by how difficult it was to find well-researched advice on aging with vitality that was not related to managing weight or youthful appearance. In her group and one-on-one coaching, Deb works with middle-aged women and beyond to help them feel vital and free of culture's stifling diet and movement rules. In my time with Deb, she names and disproves unhelpful myths about the aging process, discusses the prevalence of disordered eating in middle-aged women and beyond, the energy that is available to us if we aren't trying to white knuckle our bodies, and why elderhood is the time to emerge as our truest self. Deb Benfield's work, perspectives, and approach regarding aging are important and powerful. Happy Satiated Saturday! I'll be honest, this first episode back of the Satiated Podcast is going to be an edgy one. I chat with my dear friend Michelle Shapiro and we dive deep into, not only challenging diet culture but also anti-diet culture. I invited her back on the podcast because I kept seeing this divide happening that a person is either following the "rules" of diet culture or anti-diet culture. So when those I work with come to me and ask me if it's alright to want to lose weight or change up how they're eating or start moving their body in more rigorous ways, I hear the confusion in this question on how even anti-diet culture has now become prescriptive in what is alright and not alright to want or do. Ultimately, your relationship with food and body is going to be complex. There will NEVER be one answer that will apply to every situation when it comes to your eating or your body's image. A prominent part of healing disordered eating and body image concerns is stepping back into your sense of choice and autonomy. Only you will know what is best for you based on your body's feedback. In this week's episode, Michelle and I explore eating disorder recovery, food addiction, the ineffectiveness of intuitive eating, weight loss, body image, navigating chronic illness, trauma, and you've got to listen through to the end to hear Michelle's guidance on what everyone can be doing for their health that is entirely free and available to you right now. This episode discusses several aspects of mental hunger including its relationship to physical hunger. It emphasizes how mental hunger can feel like an insatiable desire for food, often arising from emotional and psychological factors rather than physical need. We also touch upon the significance of nervous system regulation and the complexities of achieving satisfaction while eating. The conversation highlights the role of satisfaction and self-compassion in dealing with the challenges of mental hunger. Highlights include: What is mental hunger and why does it happen Is it real and valid or should we calm ourselves down so it goes away Physical hunger confused with mental hunger Stef's concept of “collective hunger” What is your relationship with fullness? Societal notions of “beauty” and our relationship with our bodies and food have been deeply influenced by diet culture. Author and registered dietitian Christy Harrison defines diet culture as: “a system of beliefs that equates thinness, muscularity, and particular body shapes with health and moral virtue; promotes weight loss and body reshaping as a means of attaining higher status; demonizes certain foods and food groups while elevating others; and oppresses people who don't match its supposed picture of ‘health'…It masquerades as health, wellness, and fitness.” (Anti-Diet, Christy Harrison, p. 7).In today's episode, I talk with registered dietitian, sports nutritionist, and nutrition therapist Leslie Schilling about the widespread impacts of diet culture, including in our schools, medical offices, and places of worship. Leslie recently released her second book, Feed Yourself: Step Away from the Lies of Diet Culture and into Your Divine Design. She has also served as a performance nutrition consultant for Cirque du Soleil®, an expert contributor to U.S. News & World Report, and has been featured in media outlets like Health, Women's Health, Self, Pregnancy Magazine, Yoga Journal, The Huffington Post, and on HGTV.In my time with Leslie, she helps us unravel some of diet culture's lies, including how its beliefs and practices have infiltrated the church. She also helps us see that thinness isn't synonymous with health, our worth is not tied to our body size or what is on our plate, and that body diversity is divine. In so many ways, Leslie helps us name the lies of diet culture so we can fight back, live in freedom, and trust our body's divine design.Learn more about Leslie's book, here.Buy Melissa L. When we stop trying to control food and body size, it can feel unfair. It's not fair that some people are smaller and others aren't. It's not fair that some people can "eat normally" and others can't. My body can't work like it used to – it's not fair! Would you rather be at the top-of-the-bottom or the bottom-of-the-top? In today's episode, we tackle the sensitive topic of the word, "Thin," and how it has come to be so hurtful and, even, offensive. So what is it doing in our name front and center!?We want anyone who hears of us to know that the main thing is having an ever deepening relationship with God. In this way, we can relish having a healthy relationship with food and eating. Our focus isn't on being thin. We do not want to in any way conform to the pattern of this world (Romans 12:2).SO...we are REBRANDING. As of this recording, we hadn't landed on a new name, but we have now! It is Revelation Within. We have a passion to equip God's people of any age and size or shape with tools for building intimacy with God and coming to a place of peace with their bodies and food.In this episode we dig deep into the dangers of combining beliefs about Jesus with physical appearance, we debunk the idea that if we are truly godly, we will be thin.Support the showWe are rebranding. In honor of the release of my new book, Soul-Deep Beauty: Fighting for Our True Worth in a World Demanding Flawless, I have a special episode in store for you. I recently sat down to have a conversation with my literary agent, Don Pape. Don has been a champion of my book and its message for years now and I can't thank him enough. In our time together we talk about how Don ended up working in the publishing business, how he then became a literary agent, and the unique features of his company, Pape Commons. Also, in case the term “literary agent” is new to you, he/she basically represents a writer to promote and sell their work to a publisher. “Whole,” “natural,” and “clean” are just some of wellness culture's buzzwords. On the surface, wellness culture can be so enticing, perhaps seen as the pathway to optimal health and wellbeing. In today's episode, however, Christy Harrison unpacks some of the dynamics and potential dangers of wellness culture; helping us see why we should think twice before investing in a product or plan that seems too good to be true.Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, CEDS is a journalist, registered dietitian, and certified intuitive eating counselor. She's the author of Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being, and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating and her most recent book, The Wellness Trap: Break Free from Diet Culture, Disinformation, and Dubious Diagnoses and Find Your True Well-Being. Christy is the producer and host of two podcasts, Rethinking Wellness and Food Psych, which help listeners think critically about diet and wellness culture and develop more peaceful relationships with food. Christy has written for publications including The New York Times, SELF, The Food Network, and many others. Her work has been covered in numerous outlets including The Washington Post, Health, and TODAY.In our time together, Christy describes wellness culture as “a set of values that equates wellness with moral goodness and holds up certain behaviors and a certain type of body as the path to achieving that supposed goodness.” Along with describing wellness culture, Christy helps us see how wellness culture is the new guise of diet culture and how it differs from true wellbeing; including leading some people to disordered eating, unhelpful fixations, and potentially harmful behaviors. She also explains how “beauty” is used to sell wellness and gives us some ideas on how we can think critically about the ploys and products associated with wellness culture.

Sharing some of the painful stories in our lives is hard and tremendously brave. And I am tremendously thankful to those of you willing to bear your hearts with me on Shame Free Eating. On the show today my guest Jessi shares her dieting story. As great as the idea seemed for each new diet and the momentum it seemed to provide in her life — it ultimately drained her of vitality, confidence in herself, and the ability to keep dieting. What was the final straw and how has the journey looked as she reclaimed true control and trust in herself?
