Life is rarely a straight line; it's often more of a doodle full of unexpected twists and squiggles. Just ask Annie Ridout. Her journey – from being ousted from her job while pregnant to creating a thriving, multi-dimensional career as a journalist, author, poet, and entrepreneur – will feel so relatable. After vowing never to be at the mercy of someone else's power to pull the rug from under her, Annie has pivoted and diversified to build a career rooted in her passion for writing while embracing the joys and challenges of motherhood. What's more, she's refreshingly honest about the highs and lows she's experienced along the way. Whether it's the challenges of creating online courses, navigating the pandemic or homeschooling her neurodivergent child, Annie and I dive into dealing with the pesky ANTS (automatic negative thoughts) that crop up along the way. Here's what to listen out for:[01:42] Designing a career that works around your life. [05:30] The impact of career interruptions on women.[08:27] Dealing with perceived failure.[12:04] Dealing with the logistics of having a child at home. [15:36] Challenging your perception of a situation. [20:56] Annie's core lesson from her experiences. [23:36] Seeing challenges as opportunities and taking positive action.[26:28] Cheer up your day with Annie's poem.Ready to learn more? Press play now. ▶️▶️▶️ Love our podcast? What does the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria mean for both the present and future of women on the ground? Nuala McGovern is joined by Chief Foreign Correspondent at The Times, Christina Lamb, and Senior Research Fellow at the London School of Economics and member of the Women's Advisory Board to the UN special envoy to Syria, Dr Rim Turkmani. Journalist Rhiannon Picton-James says you couldn't pay her to have another child in the UK – because she believes it's a ‘cruel and unfriendly' country. Is she right? What are we doing wrong? Rhiannon joins Nuala in the studio to discuss, along with comedian Esther Manito. The rivalry between silver-screen icons Bette Davis and Joan Crawford is the stuff of legend, a decades-long battle sparked by both professional and personal resentments. Now the story is being told in a re-boot of the play Bette & Joan, now showing at the Park Theatre in London. Greta Scaachi, who plays Bette, and Felicity Dean, who plays Joan, join Nuala to tell us more about the pair's infamous relationship.Lisa O'Neill is an internationally renowned singer-songwriter who has built a reputation internationally for her unique folk sound and powerful song writing. Lisa joins Nuala to speak about the women who have inspired her, why she puts messages of social justice in her music, and to perform live in the studio. In this message, Becca and Samuel Vander Klok, pastors of Life West Church in Allendale, Michigan, share their story of faith, family, and 19 years of marriage as a testament to God's transformative power. Drawing from 2nd Kings chapter 6, they explore the wisdom of seeking guidance from elders and the importance of generational unity in faith. Becca and Samuel's journey began in an adventurous setting—rock climbing—and quickly turned into a lifelong commitment when Samuel proposed just two weeks later. Their relationship demonstrates the beauty of aligning marriage with God's Word and shows how, even after past mistakes, couples can choose to build a Christ-centered union. For singles, they offer encouragement to focus on serving God wholeheartedly, emphasizing that personal worth is found in Him alone—not in marital status. Their message includes: ✅ How to address and overcome obstacles in marriage. ✅ The power of creating a shared vision for your family. ✅ Why prioritizing God and each other leads to a fulfilling relationship. Whether you're married or single, this sermon is packed with wisdom and practical steps for honoring God in your relationships.
How can astrology create guidance in your life as a parent? How do you apply this wisdom into everyday daily life? What is a birth chart? Are you open and ready to learn about your own astrology? Special Guest: Tory Sjovall is an intuitive energy and tarot card reader, an astrologer for mothers and families, and a self proclaimed “witchy mom” of two kids! She was led down the path of self discovery and spirituality in her 20s while working a corporate retail job in NYC, and searching for meaning outside the daily “grind.” While finding more peace and self-acceptance were amazing side effects of learning how to read birth charts, getting reiki attuned and learning tarot, the real work started when she became a mom. She had her daughter in Spring of 2020 and went through a deep dark night of the soul while welcoming her first baby into the world during mass chaos. She was so grateful she had developed all these spiritual practices and tools to help her connect more intentionally with herself, her husband and her kids through the ups and downs of parenting. Now her biggest passion is helping you do the same! Guiding mom's through rediscovering who they are with her intuitive work and astrology readings and guiding families closer together with deeper understanding of each other through their birth charts! As a Taurus, Tory's gift is taking woo-woo and bringing it back down to Earth, so that you can easily apply new practices to your everyday life! I am so excited to have Jenny Keller, the “Cookie Queen” herself, on the podcast today! I first met Jenny back in the very early days of Chatbooks and before she'd opened herJenny Cookies bakery–we were both sponsoring the Santa's Secret Workshop in West Hollywood–an event bringing together celebrities and their families to celebrate the holiday season while supporting charitable causes. Well,Jenny, always up for a party, was there with her incredible cookies and her infectious smile and as soon as we met we became fast friends! A lot has happened since then and Jenny's inspiring journey is now taking a dramatic turn and in this episode she shares all the details! She opens up about the ups and downs of running a business while raising a family, how she creates meaningful family traditions, and the unexpected joys of having older kids. What is the secret to a lifelong, happy marriage? In today's episode, Adam Hill interviews his wife Marie about their 19 years of marriage. They discuss the challenges they've faced, including Adam's past alcoholism, and how they've grown together through personal development. They discuss the other struggles they've faced raising their two teenagers, and navigating anxiety and fear as a family. Marie shares her perspective on how their relationship has evolved since they first met in college, and how choosing to stay connected through good times and bad has helped them grow together. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Letting go of control over our children's lives The glue that keeps them together The value of therapy Embracing growth and personal development The power of weekly meetings Episode Highlights: [10:51] Prioritizing Self-Care and Therapy for a Stronger Relationship Growing together through struggles like addiction, mental health issues, or raising children makes the relationship stronger. However, if you find yourself in a toxic relationship, it's crucial to prioritize your own well-being and not try to fix others. While it can be a double-edged sword, seeking individual therapy worked wonders for Adam and Marie. Couples therapy may be common, but the value of one-on-one therapy cannot be underestimated. The couple went into separate therapy sessions, which they found to be incredibly beneficial. They have been dedicated to therapy for years, and normalizing it in the family has had a significant impact. [21:51] Embracing Hope and Personal Development When we hit rock bottom, feeling utterly hopeless, it's essential to recognize that there is hope beyond that darkness. Even in the depths of shame, there can be a moment of realization, a glimmer of something more. It becomes the starting line for personal growth and becoming a better person. Through sobriety and the introduction of personal development, we can begin to plant seeds of change within ourselves. We have the capacity to evolve and grow through our traumas, but it requires us to let go of fear and embrace the process. As beautifully said, when we let go, we give that seed within us the opportunity to blossom into a wonderful and beautiful flower of development. [34:07] The Power of Weekly Meetings Adam and Marie have discovered the power of their weekly meetings, which have transformed their communication and how they interact with each other. By having a structured meeting every week, they stay in sync with each other's schedules and priorities. This consistent communication has become a game changer for them. They have implemented the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) from the book "Traction" by Gino Wickman, both in their company and household, finding it to be highly effective. The weekly meetings help them stay aligned and accountable, just like in a business setting. Partners must work together and hold each other accountable for a successful relationship.
