Lindsay and Lexie Kite, authors of More Than a Body, about how parents can help their children develop a healthy body image in a world that often prioritizes appearance over well-being. Amy is joined by Dr. Lexie Kite to revisit her book, More Than A Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament, exploring the ways women and girls are looked at, predatory practices of the beauty industry, plus how to escape the sea of objectification and come home to your whole self.Donate to Breaking Down PatriarchyDr. Lexie Kite is co-author of the book More Than a Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament and co-director of the nonprofit Beauty Redefined, along with her twin sister Dr. Lindsay Kite. They both received PhDs from the University of Utah in the study of female body image and have become leading experts in body image resilience and media literacy. Authors of numerous studies and books have cited Lindsay and Lexie's original research and they have been featured in a variety of national media outlets, including The New York Times, CNBC, the Boston Globe, Slate, Shape, Glamour, Teen Vogue, and more.Lindsay and Lexie help girls and women recognize and reject the harmful effects of objectification in their lives through their significant social media reach, online Body Image Resilience course and facilitator program for dieticians and therapists, their popular book (More Than a Body), and regular speaking engagements for thousands of people of all ages. I'm willing to bet that struggling with body image and self worth is quite common for many of us. Almost daily I have to remind myself that how my body looks is the least important and interesting thing about me. But when I hear my teenage and young adult daughters body shame themselves I get down right angry. In my effort to find resources to help me help them I came across a book authored by sisters Lexi and Lindsay Kite called "More than a Body. -that book changed me! Both Lexi and Lindsey have PhDs in the study of body image and media from the University of Utah. Their research focused on harmful media messages, and they are considered experts in body image resilience and media literacy so I was thrilled when Lexi accepted my invitation to be a guest on the podcast a couple of years ago. A little more about Lexi and Lindsay: growing up as twins they faced constant comparisons about their appearance from friends and strangers alike. As the years went by they both found themselves critical of their bodies, so much so that they gave up something they both loved to do - competitive swimming. Years later the sisters went on to study body image and founded the nonprofit organization Beauty Redefined. For more than 10 years, the Kite sisters have been spreading their “More Than A Body” message. In this encore episode you will learn strategies for cultivating self-compassion and resilience and ways mothers can model body positivity. I encourage you to listen with your daughters and/ or sisters and talk about your takeaways together. It has created some wonderful, healing conversations in my house. Have you ever thought that you were happier when you were thinner/ prettier/ younger/ etc? In a culture that values thinness and beauty, it's hard not to believe that your value lies in your appearance. We buy into arbitrary beauty ideals and false promises, killing ourselves to look a certain way. In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Lindsay Kite, co-author of the book More Than a Body and co-director of the nonprofit Beauty Redefined, to talk about healing body-image struggles. You will learn... - the missing piece of the puzzle when we talk about body-image - how the male gaze affects body-image - why losing weight and changing your appearance never solves the problem - ways to combat toxic beauty ideals and build body -image resilience Remember: keeping up with beauty ideals is a losing game. Adhering to society's definition of beauty does NOT buy love, confidence, health, or happiness. Usually, it only exacerbates body-image struggles. "Self-objectification is the invisible prison of picturing yourself being looked at instead of just fully living."Summertime often equates to sunshine and vacation and no school, right? But for a lot of people, it means hating their bodies because they don't look "beach ready". That's why Katie and I dedicate an episode every summer to encouraging self-love. So many of our clients make their way to plant-based eating in order to diet and lose weight. If this is the case, then one of my first steps is to recommend the book "More Than a Body. It is a beautiful reminder that we are all so much more than just what we look like. We review why we are so obsessed with our appearance, how society introduces these expectations, why social media can be dangerous and most importantly how to combat the feelings of inadequacies that come with self objectification. Hello Loves!I'm back! This week I've got a little life update on where I've been for the past 2 1/2 months + some juicy personal and professional news.
Like so many of you, I worry about how to teach my son with disabilities to fully love and embrace all of himself—including and especially his disabilities that set him apart from his non-disabled peers. And I believe it starts with us. We need to accept and love our bodies exactly as they are—even the parts we think are not worthy of being seen. We need to model body image resilience for our children. In this episode, Dr. Lexie Kite, a leading expert in the field of body image resilience, shares ways that we can shift how we view and speak about our bodies in order to influence the ways our children view their own bodies. How do you feel about your body? Have you ever stayed home from a social activity or other opportunity because of concern about how you looked? Have you ever passed judgment on someone because of how they looked or dressed? Have you ever had difficulty concentrating on a task because you were self-conscious about your appearance? This is self-objectification and it is the result of our beauty-obsessed world perpetuating the idea that happiness, health, and ability to be loved are dependent on how we look. Drs. Lindsay and Lexie Kite teach that positive body image isn't believing your body looks good, it's knowing your body is good, regardless of how it looks. They provide the tools to build resilience in a culture that objectifies and commodifies women's bodies. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Happy Monday Floss Fans! Welcome to the start of a brand new mini series. Today and for the next three weeks, Floss will be chatting to an awesome cadre of guests about Body Image. This week it's the wonderful Dr. Lindsay Kite and Dr. Lexie Kite, identical twins, co-authors of the book More Than a Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament and directors of the nonprofit company Beauty Redefined. Their instagram is on fire with body image analysis and they use their doctorates, their platform and their book to espouse essential wisdom on the ways in which we're all conditioned by capitalist patriarchy to think our perceived desirability is the most important thing about us. Floss, Lindsay and Lexie chat about the male gaze, body resilience vs body positivity and beauty standards. So many of us feel such pressure to conform to certain ideals that unpacking our own autonomy over those choices becomes increasingly complicated. We're taught to be so self-critical of the way that we look that we forget to be grateful for all the marvellous things our bodies can do. Later they deep dive into sex, and summer and how truly inhabiting your body can allow you to reclaim your rage. “Prettiness is not the rent you pay to exist in the world as a woman”- Erin Mckean “Women Don't Owe You Pretty” - Florence Given Original theme music by Black Honey. If you operate in a femme body or identify as female, it's highly likely you've found yourself contending with a litany of body image “issues”. I put issues in quotes because the things that we worry about, and subsequently own as our “issues”, are purposely manufactured to commodify and exploit our bodies. In essence we're programmed to have “issues”. They're given to us. For example, we used to never worry about having body hair. Like, not even a thing. Then, Gillette pops up like, “Hey, we wanna make some money, so how ‘bout you start to think having hair on your legs is gross and give us money to fix it.” Think about how many products in your pantry, medicine cabinet, dresser drawers, shower, and bathroom vanity have become vaults for a myriad of products designed to change the way you look. Why? Because we have bought into the societal belief that women are valuable based solely on their bodies. And, we have an unbelievably limited view of which bodies are acceptable and permissible. But what if your body was an instrument and not an ornament? Whaaaaaa? Yeah. On this week's show I dial up Dr. Lexie Kite who, along with her twin sister, Dr. Lindsay Kite, has developed a social movement to redesign how we, as women, view beauty, body image, and the body positive movement. This conversation is a call to arms to examine the myopic lens through which we've been conditioned to see our bodies. Why? So we can see the breadth of our value. Because you, my friend, are so much more than a body. Get ready to wear a hole in this episode, because it will shake you at your core. In the best way possible. This pod explores: Dr. Lexie's mantra you need to start using immediately… like, yesterday How we've been grossly misinformed about what positive body image looks like What it looks like to practice body image resilience How much of the body positive movement has sorely misdiagnosed the problem (Hint: How focusing on “all bodies are beautiful” may be missing the mark… What!? I know.) HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! ACCESS ‘ENOUGHNESS'. POWERFULLY NAVIGATE FEAR. SPEAK UP FOR YOURSELF. You know that feeling when you're walking down the hall, or through a room of people and it feels like everyone is staring at you?And you know in those moments you almost start to stare at yourself? You become acutely aware of the way your clothes are hanging on your body, your posture, the way you're walking, the hairstyle you chose that day–and chances are you're not thinking about how awesome you look. There is a name for this experience. It's called self-objectification and we all do it.We're groomed for it from birth. It is at the root of so many of our own body image problems. And we're raising our kids to do the exact same thing.Self-objectification is the concept of trying to look at ourselves through the eyes of others. We cannot see our own bodies walking through the world, but we definitely imagine them and when we do, we imagine them through a lens of criticism and unworthiness. There are so many reasons we do this, and NONE of them are healthy. Today's guest at the campfire is Lexie Kite.Lexie and her identical twin sister, Lindsay, are the co-directors of Beauty Redefined, a nonprofit working to help girls and women improve their body image and self-worth as they wade through harmful cultural ideals.
