In this episode, Gina Livy gets real about those heavy carb foods like bread and pasta. The truth is, those foods aren't actually the reason people gain weight. From food additives and blood sugar to stress, sleep, hormones, and dieting history, she breaks down the bigger picture behind sustainable weight loss and healthy metabolism. There is a reason why people often feel worse eating certain foods after losing weight, not because they “can't” eat them anymore, but because they finally notice how those foods affect their body. It's a conversation about food freedom, weight maintenance, insulin sensitivity, and building healthier habits without fear, guilt, or restriction. This episode aligns with day 20 of our Spring 2026 weight loss program. Has your pursuit of food freedom has turned into a chaotic free for all that leaves you feeling more sluggish than supported? Many assume intuitive eating means eating whatever sounds good in the moment. Taste becomes the only guide. That idea often leads to confusion, especially for those trying to step away from diet culture and follow a non diet approach. In this episode, we explore what eating intuitively really looks like in practice. It is a blend of internal cues, emotions, and rational thought. When those three work together, you begin to build body intuition and a deeper sense of body respect. We talk about how mindful eating plays a role in this process and why it takes time to develop. You will hear how this approach creates space for both satisfaction and nourishing meals, without turning food into a new set of rules. This conversation focuses on: How gentle nutrition fits into this process without turning it into strict rules The role of nutrient dense foods in creating meals that support your energy and digestion How to balance cravings with awareness instead of relying on taste alone Ways to recognize patterns in your eating habits and body responses How emotional eating support helps you better understand your relationship with food Food neutrality becomes easier when you remove judgment and allow yourself to experiment. Over time, you stop labeling foods as good or bad and start making decisions based on what your body actually needs. Rebuilding trust with your body can feel challenging. This episode offers a grounded way to approach this work without turning it into another rigid system   Let's rebrand wellness together! Elizabeth, Tara & Maria   Join the retreat! What do lasagna, punch, and your midnight cookie cravings have in common? More than you'd ever guess. Today, I'm serving up something totally different—a mashup episode that takes us from the surprising origins of the words on your dinner plate to the hidden spots where travelers find real food magic, and finally, into the deep conversation we don't have enough about: what's really driving your cravings. I sat down with Mark Morton, author of Cupboard Love, who dropped some serious mind-benders—like the fact that lasagna is related to the word for bedpan (I'm still processing that one) and that companion actually means someone you break bread with. Then Kenny Dunn, founder of Eating Europe, joined me to talk about why the best meals aren't the Instagram-famous spots, but the tiny places where locals line up for just one thing. And in my solo segments, I get real about protein confusion, the truth about farm-raised versus wild-caught, and the emotional roots of the cravings that have us standing in front of the pantry at midnight.  If you've ever wondered where food words come from, how to eat like a traveler instead of a tourist, or why you're reaching for the cookie jar when what you really need is something deeper—this episode is for you. Let's get curious together.   0:00 – Intro: Why This Mashup Episode Is Different 2:14 – Interview with Mark Morton: The Surprising Origin of Lasagna 3:49 – Why Pantry Has Nothing to Do With What You Store 4:13 – The Beautiful Meaning of "Companion" 5:28 – Shakespeare Never Ate a Banana 6:35 – How Language Borrows From Invaders and Settlers 8:16 – The Punjabi Origin of Punch 9:58 – Interview with Kenny Dunn: Finding the Places Locals Love 10:50 – Why Instagram-Famous Spots Usually Disappoint 12:37 – What European Markets Teach Us About Community 15:04 – Solo Segment: The Truth About Protein Quality 22:14 – Farm-Raised vs. Wild-Caught: Why It Matters 24:27 – What Your Grandparents Knew About Eating Meat 29:10 – How to Calculate Your Protein Needs 31:45 – Solo Segment: Cravings Are Messengers, Not Enemies 35:20 – The Emotional Triggers Behind Late-Night Eating 39:10 – Restrictive Dieting and Disordered Eating 42:15 – Tools to Regain Control: The 90/10 Rule 44:35 – Final Thoughts and Challenge to Stay Curious     MENTIONED RESOURCES   Book: Cupboard Love: A Dictionary of Culinary Curiosities by Mark Morton Company: Eating Europe (culinary tour company) Product: Superfood Sprinkle by Chef Mareya Program: Eat to Thrive program Tool: Meal prep app at mealprepapp.chefmareya.com Website: ChefMareya.com Discount Code: REAL DISH (for Superfood Sprinkle) Book: Eat Like You Give a Fork: The Real Dish on Eating to Thrive by Chef Mareya

You can quit alcohol. You can quit drugs. You can delete the apps and walk away. But you can't quit food—which is exactly why weight loss feels so impossibly hard. You need to eat multiple times a day, every single day, for the rest of your life. So how do you navigate holiday eating without gaining weight or feeling deprived when "just don't eat it" isn't an option? This week, I'm tackling the biggest misconception about food and addiction. Unlike substances you can eliminate completely, food requires a completely different strategy because you can't go cold turkey. You'll discover why your "it's go time" thoughts during the holidays trigger cortisol that makes you crave carbs, why 95% of your subconscious thoughts are sabotaging your best intentions, and how to redirect yourself when you can't just walk away from food forever. I'll share my German chocolate cake story—how I enjoyed my favorite birthday cake all week without guilt by planning 24 hours in advance, proving you can have your cake and lose weight too. Tune in as I break down the five pillars to permanent weight loss (spoiler: it starts with understanding simple hormone science), reveal why sneaking food feels thrilling at first but destroys self-trust long-term, and explain the Santa's elves analogy that shows exactly what happens when you overload your body with flour and sugar. You'll learn why flour and sugar need a six-week break, how to become the traffic controller of your own holidays, and the critical difference between numbing negative thoughts with food versus actually feeling your feelings. Ready to stop making false promises about January? My January course starting January 9th teaches you how to actually keep resolutions instead of breaking them by February. Details are

I apologize that my microphone did not work as perfectly as wonderful Angela is... please do if you can, bear with the sound, and listen to her message.  It's an amazing one...Angela is so wonderful.  Our conversation flowed beautifully.  I apologize for the sound.  I did my best to edit it.  I am not perfect on my podcast, but the messages to my listeners are.  Angela's message is so perfect for my listeners.  I loved her honesty and her wisdom.  Having an amazing life is up to you. I appreciated comments like Food Freedom, and Enjoy Food.  This is where I am now and I am so excited she brought that up.  We spoke to how to eat slowly, and also the beautiful things Angela shared.  Write down your next day.  Journal. For some of her clients, it is important to have the right portions, prepare your day, make sure you have protein, heal, and recover.   The strange thing is I realized I do all that.  But I can always do better.  Although the career that I love has me going up and down stairs, and my legs are fit, my arms are losing muscle.  I have all the exercise equipment to do what I said... from 48 to 56 and in better shape.  Now 61... I am going to challenge myself.  20-minute workouts just 4 times a week.  I am sending Angela my before and after.  Does it matter?  Not really, except, we spoke to the health around our bones when we get to our 60s.  It's not about my caring how I look, it's about protecting my bones.  It's about the perception of "I want to look great" to "I want to protect my body" which someone called a meat skin.  Yes.  It is.  And it needs muscle to keep its bones protected. What an amazing lady!  About eating disorders?  She speaks to a perfect way of finding a diet.  NOT A DIET... a way of eating for life.  Voices go away when you have peace around food.  She talks about food thoughts and releasing that.  Nutrition degree, bodybuilding, coming out of being a skinny fat person.  I get that.   Angela was wonderful in speaking to all this.  She was such a beautiful guest. And my BAD.  I meant 20 minutes 4 times a week.  I was so excited speaking to Angela, I messed up by saying by day.  NO! It's 20 minutes 4 times a week.  It's all you need. The Unraveled Mama Podcast
Episode 103 - 3 Overeating myths you have to stop doing to lose weight and enjoy food!

The Unraveled Mama Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2023 17:12

Mama!Overeating isn't something that I recommend because it doesn't leave you feeling good, but the extra calories consumed aren't as big of a deal as some people make them out to be! One night of bad eating won't ruin a week, a month, or a year's worth of hard work!‌What does hurt your health is going back to old habits and thoughts that haven't been serving you for years! Instead of falling prey to these three myths, I want to give you new truths to lean into and use so that you don't have to feel guilt, shame and regret when you overeat!Myth 1: You have to workout harder to burn off the bad food you ateRaise your hand (or tell me in the comments) if you've ever guilted yourself into going to the gym or doing double workouts because you overate the day before - or so that you could overeat?‌I've been there too, mama! I used to believe that I HAD to hit the gym extra hard to make up for my bad eating. But do you know what that belief did to me? It made me hate the gym! And I love a good workout! For those of you who already struggle with working out, that isn't going to make building healthy habits any easier!Truth: You have extra energy waiting to be put to good use:Instead of making working out a punishment, make it something you do to feel better! Because you ate more, you're going to have more energy to burn, which makes this an opportunity to hit a new goal!‌If you're a runner, see if you can hit a new mile PR. If you like to lift, see if you can up your weights a little! Whatever you want to do for exercise, try to push yourself just a little further than your comfort zone! You might even be amazed when you realize how good your workout feels the day after consuming some extra calories!‌Now, you might be thinking, isn't pushing myself to work harder the same as the myth, working harder to burn off the extra food? And that's a totally valid question! The difference between the myth and the truth is how you think and feel about it!‌With the myth, you believe that you've done a bad thing (making you a bad person) and you need to punish yourself for that. But, with the truth, you're accepting the choices you made and turning a situation that could have brought you down into an opportunity to succeed! How you think about your actions is so, so, so important!! I talk about mindset with my Macros Made Easy mamas all the time because how we think and feel about ourselves and our actions is the difference between success and failure!‌I would still encourage you to put that extra food to use by moving your body, but I want you to do it in a way that builds a better relationship with healthy habits, like exercise! If that means you take the family ice skating the next day to get extra movement in, awesome! If that means you add 10 minutes to your workout because you feel like you're crushing it at the gym, great! Do whatever feels good for you!Myth 2: You should skip meals to make up for itPlease, please don't restrict yourself tomorrow because you enjoyed some food today!! This is the recipe for binge eating which doesn't help you lose weight.‌Binging like this sends your body into stress mode. It doesn't know when it's going to get enough food, so instead of burning the extra calories that you consumed the day before, it holds onto them causing you to gain weight! It's a vicious cycle that never serves you!Truth: Get back to your normal asapWhat your body actually wants from you is consistency. It wants to know what it can expect from you each day. When you eat a consistent amount every day your body can leave that fight or flight stress behind and it will do what it's meant to do!‌Start your day with a protein-packed breakfast. Make smart food choices during the day. Eat the same amount that you normally do! If you do these three things your body will realize that it just got a little extra energy and it will take care of it on its own!‌Your body was literally built to process food into energy so allow it the chance to do that! You may see the scale go up for a day or two, but as you return to your normal eating patterns, the weight will come off!Myth 3: You need to avoid carbs since you overateOh, carbs. We are so mean to carbs! We've made them out to be the villain that is solely responsible for our weight gain. But carbs are absolutely necessary for sustaining life!‌If you grew up in a generation where you were told carbs were terrible for you and would make you fat, then you probably are going to feel a lot of resistance to the idea that you need carbs to live a healthy life.‌It's important that you work on that thought process because carbs are going to be your body, and especially your brain's, first source of energy! Limiting them can make you feel more sluggish the next day!Truth: Eat a normal amount of carbsAnother truth that is probably going to blow your mind, is that overeating in carbs occasionally can actually help you lose weight!‌For real!! I will use this tool with my clients to help them get over a hurdle in their weight loss journey. It's called a refeed. What I typically do, is give my clients an extra 20-30 carbs for one day. When they weigh up the next day they might see the scale go up a pound or two because carbs attract water and it causes some slight inflammation.‌But then, over the next few days, they will hit their lowest weight yet. This works is because when you're eating in lower carbs and then increase them your metabolism revs up and uses the quick burning energy to power your life!‌Hardly anyone believes me when I tell them this, but they do their refeed and then 2-3 days later they freak out when the scale drops! It's the best thing.‌Just because you were taught something about nutrition growing up, doesn't mean it's necessarily true! And most of the myths we talked about today are proof of that!I help busy mamas learn about nutrition on a personal level so that they can lose weight and have the energy to keep up with their kiddos. If you're struggling with nutritional myths and are stuck in the yo-yo dieting cycle, let's chat!‌I can help you lose weight in the new year without having to restrict yourself! 359: How to enjoy food again when illness affects your senses

Eating food is one of the most multisensory, emotional experiences we can have.    It is not something we are always that conscious of, but the smell of food cooking in the lead up to mealtime can take you back to your childhood, and the taste of a certain meal can transport you halfway around the world to a holiday that lives somewhere in the depths of your memory. Even on a day-to-day basis, tasting food is one of life's pleasures. A bit of joy on an otherwise dull day, it can be the focus of your evening, even a comfort at times. So for people whose senses have been altered by illness, cooking and eating can become joyless, even isolating. It is something lots of people have experienced with Covid. But it can be true too for people suffering other illnesses or going through invasive treatments, and the effect can be profound for people's wider health and wellbeing. So in this episode of the Food Matters Live podcast, we are exploring sensory cooking techniques which can help people to start enjoying their food again. Ryan Riley, Co-Founder, Life Kitchen Ryan Riley opened a cookery school for people with Cancer in 2019. Life Kitchen is a not-for-profit cookery school for people whose taste has been affected by cancer or cancer treatment. It also teaches anyone who is experiencing an altered sense of taste due to Covid. Life Kitchen's focus is on taste and flavour and helping people enjoy food again. During cancer treatment and Covid, a lot of patients lose or experience changes to their sense of taste or smell. This is a really difficult side effect that can make mealtimes difficult and isolating.  Life Kitchen is run by co-founders Ryan Riley, author, cook and food stylist, and Kimberley Duke, recipe developer, trained chef and food stylist. Both Ryan and Kim were inspired to launch Life Kitchen after losing parents to cancer.  Throughout Ryan's mum Krista's two-year battle with cancer, Ryan saw how chemotherapy was affecting her ability to taste and experience food. After her death, he wanted to honour his mother's memory and use his cooking skills to help cancer patients find flavour and pleasure in food again. And so, Life Kitchen was born. Life Kitchen is backed by science and they are advised by Professor Barry Smith, the founder of the Centre for Study of the Senses.  Professor Smith guides the Life Kitchen team on recipes and ingredients so that people living with an altered sense of taste get enjoyment out of food.

Series 4 is ending on a high with this really interesting and thought-provoking conversation with neuroscientist, Dr Miguel Toribio-Mateas. Through his understanding of the brain, he's able to explain clearly and with compassion how we can - quite unwittingly - programme our brains into thinking we're reacting to specific foods that we deem to be 'bad'. Not only that, how our brains can control the way we absorb and use the food we eat for energy and fat storage. Understanding this is powerful, because in making sense of how detrimental neuro pathways are set up and reinforced, we can then learn tools and techniques to remodel our brains, in a way that ultimately allows us to live more joyful lives, and be free to enjoy food on a whole new level.   Thank you to the sponsor of this series of Healthily, Kalla Probiotics, who are offering you as a listener £10 off your first order with them.
