“Radical self-love” — what it is and how to do it.It is incredibly common for many of us humans, whatever our gender, to be at war with our bodies -- trying to live up to the people we see in the movies, on social media, or even the versions of ourselves in old pictures. This never-enough-ness can lead to an ambient level of self-loathing that can be incredibly destructive. That's where "radical self-love" comes in.Our guest today is Sonya Renee Taylor. She is the author of three books, including The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love. She is the Founder and Radical Executive Officer of The Body is Not An Apology. She has come to this work as a result of her own personal pain, as a Black woman inhabiting a body that she says does not conform to societal norms. In this conversation, we talk about defining radical self-love (and why she believes it's our natural state), tools for cultivating radical self-love, and the connection between being OK with yourself and the larger society. In this episode, Caitlin Liz Fisher talks about 11 reasons why diet culture and weight stigma often lead to serious consequences on physical and mental health, and why it's important to challenge these harmful beliefs and promote body acceptance and self-compassion. They explore how health and wellness can be achieved without focusing on weight loss and challenge the societal belief that fatness is inherently unhealthy. Episode Highlights: How societal beliefs often prioritize weight loss over health and well-being How the current medical paradigm often underdiagnoses thin people and misdiagnoses fat people due to the assumption that weight is the primary indicator of health Exploring the Health at Every Size (HAES) movement or how people of any size can be healthy Why the BMI is a flawed and outdated measure of health The nasty truth about dieting and weight cycling Why systemic injustices and food apartheid contribute to disparities in access to healthy food How to approach health and nutrition in a way that is inclusive and respectful of all body types Episodes we think you'd love: Resources for Building Your Anti-Diet Support System https://open.spotify.com/episode/7uovkwixnLGsDYPNi8hOLz?si=c962a3480265422e Revolutionizing Your Resolutions https://open.spotify.com/episode/288PJYx0VjUqcOQKefpUCJ?si=38cf2306f7d54aac Scrutinizing the ‘New Year New Me' Mentality https://open.spotify.com/episode/0PGiPFWkwsMJfLmpCBBlDC?si=1498c3cd16464781 Healing from People Pleasing Trauma https://open.spotify.com/episode/6SxYEmmcS5T27JcNFVmZl2?si=cd5efc88eacf4b5c You Are Enough - The Power of Self-Compassion https://open.spotify.com/episode/0wWB6ipewH8KO4kU5QiFCd?si=4004b2e034dc4484 Resources mentioned in this episode: Health At Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight - Linda Bacon, PhD https://www.amazon.com/Health-At-Every-Size-Surprising/dp/1935618253 The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love - Sonya Renee Taylor https://www.amazon.com/Body-Not-Apology-Radical-Self-Love/dp/1626569762 Busting Myths About Eating Disorders - National Eating Disorders Association https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/busting-myths-about-eating-disorders/ Addressing Weight Stigma and Fatphobia in Public Health 11 Reasons Why We Should Not Use Weight-based Approaches to Health The F*ck It Diet by Caroline Dooner https://thefuckitdiet.com/book More epic resources to check out: FREE: F*ck New Years Resolutions Workbook at bit.ly/fnyr  PAID: Stay Fat in 2024 Challenge!! Plans have changed and the ‘cult'ure series isn't wrapping just yet! Back after another long break, Candice shares why she's decided to keep at it; then she lays the foundation for this week's convo. Originally recorded as a Patreon bonus, Candice and wingwoman, Tracy Stamper, welcome special guest Tara Wike to the pod for a two-part deconstruction of diet ‘cult'ure. In Part 1, Tara shares a bit about her personal background, time spent teaching and training with ‘the Org,' and the wake-up call that led her into a path of recovery around disordered eating. Topics discussed include: healthism, orthorexia, intuitive eating, how systemic biases shape definitions of 'health', and how Tara is now bringing a Health At Every Size (HAES) approach to her personal and professional endeavors. And stick around to the end, because Tara's wisdom is timely. Candice expresses some in-real-time raw emotion, sharing a peek into her own disordered eating and revealing how Tara's honesty & openness has been a real wake-up call. Part 2 drops next week.Tara Wike (she/her) is an American expat living in Denmark with her husband and son. She is a leader in the design organization at The LEGO Group, and moonlights teaching Org-inspired movement classes, having recently left the Org after decades of practice. Mindful Weight Loss with Michelle Tubman, MD

I sat down on a gorgeous August afternoon to record this episode about a book I had delayed reading until recently. And this book is “The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-love” by Sonya Renee Taylor. I had it on my bookshelf. I just didn't read it. I think the reason I didn't is because Sonya talks about something called body terrorism and the term put me off. But she describes body terrorism as just the systems and structures that are in place in society to maintain the marginalization of people. So I read it, as I said, and the way she confronts fat-shaming and implicit bias has given me a lot to think about. I wouldn't say Sonya takes a gentle approach, she's direct, but this book has resonated with me now and I want to talk about it.Sonya talks about systemic sizeism in culture and systemic discrimination but she also really emphasizes the fact that a lot of the work in addressing this has to start with ourselves. That's not necessarily a fun thing to read, you know? But Sonya uses what she calls “radical self-love”, which goes way beyond self-compassion or loving your body, to take us into a place where we intuitively understand how valuable and worthy we are. We dismantle the implicit bias within ourselves and turn it around by fundamentally understanding our worth. So I'm exploring the four pillars that Sonya talks about that help bring us to a place of radical self-love. I'm going to talk about those four pillars - taking out the toxic, mind matters, unapologetic action, and collective compassion - and what it looks like to actually put these into action in daily life. I hope you find this as challenging and beautiful as I did.Resources mentioned in this episode:“The Body is Not An Apology: The Power of Radical Self-love” by Sonya Renee Taylor—Learn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

You need to focus your efforts. Um, you need to go all in on one thing. Um, shut down all of the distractions. Um, and then his motto is, get 1% better every day. And there's so many things Brad Crowell: we can talk about here, but, um, this is something that is particularly challenging for me, uh, because I love to be involved in a thousand different things. But what he was talking about was. When he realized that helping others get their books created, written, published, and grow their, you know, get that out there, uh, was the thing that he really enjoyed and got the most out of. Then he actually shut down all of his other revenue streams, which is like, oh wow. That's crazy. Um, that's, that's daring.Lesley Logan: Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained [00:01:00] thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt, my friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap, where my co-host in life Brad and I are going to dig into the literary convo I had with Jake Kelfer in our last episode. If you haven't yet listened to that interview, feel free to pause this now. Go back and listen to that one, and then come back and join us. I'm just gonna say, first time ever that I've said this intro without bucking it up, so we're all gonna give me a round of applause. Anyways. Okay, so guys, today is Autism Supermom Day.Um, [00:02:00] so if you have a friend in your life who is a mom whose child is autistic, please give them a hug. Tell them they're a supermom. Tell 'em tthey're doing amazing things. Um, it's, it's, Brad Crowell: it's It's actually part of the Autism Awareness Month. Yep. Um, and this day was created to celebrate the strength, courage, and determination of mothers of autistic children.Um, if that is you, um, you are amazing. Yeah. Lesley Logan: We've had, uh, we have a, an episode coming up with a guest who is a mom of an autistic child. And, um, again, if we are screwing up how we're saying that, please feel free to correct us. Just don't yell at us, just say, this is how you say it. But, uh, I hope I'm getting it right, um, because I do know that there is so much, um, awareness that nese brought around neuro divergent children and, and that whole thing. And so. Please be there for those who have a kid on the, um, who is never neuro divergent because it's hard, it's hard to be a parent in general. It's even harder when your child has a different way of learning and a different way of sharing those things. And people look at you like they should be normal.Uh, so we should just get rid of the word of [00:03:00] normal anyways. Yeah. Um, that, that's, that's the today's holiday. Uh, this week, earlier this week, we hosted our first live to the public profitable Pilates workshop. You guys, we. Um, it's been, uh, many, many moons since we did anything like that. And really, if anything, this kind Yeah, Brad Crowell: probably like 48 moons.Yeah. Lesley Logan: How many years is that? Four. Yeah. Five. Yeah. So, um, and uh, so this one was on, um, how to raise your rates and you will be able to, um, basically we did it because we're filming an older course and I wanted to make sure that as many people as possible could have access to this teaching, this learning, because it's so important that y'all know how to do this without cringing and freaking out, so at any rate, um, it will be a course that it'll be available for you to get on profit-wise dot com at some point soon. And next month, uh, is Pilates day on May 6th, and you should save this date because I'm actually going to teach on Instagram.Live a [00:04:00] class, which is something I haven't done in what, 48 moons. Um, I'm teaching a, um, a workout on Instagram with, uh, TAVI Noir, Toesox and Vooray. So, uh, save the date. It will be in the morning Pacific time. Um, all those dates will be on my Instagram, so make sure you're following me. And you can also win some badass stuff. So I'm just saying. Um, and then here we go. Uh, this is, the countdown is on you guys. Yeah. We are less than a month away from being in Seoul. Uh, which by the way, I didn't tell you this, but when I was in. Um, when I was getting my hair done, a girl from Korea was like, it's all if they call it"Seoul." So it's like, so yeah, we're just saying it wrong. So I, I sound like a white girl when I say it, but we're wearing soul. Uh, but I think it's so, um, Pilates on tour. Nailed it there. Nailed, nailed it. Great job. I'm gonna learn, I think it's, Anyways, I'm, I'm bucking it up. However, Duolingo has a Korean, uh, lesson, so I feel like maybe I should [00:05:00] dumb download for, for Korean, just so I can get my directions around.I really like it. Um, anyways, we'll have flashcards there. We'll be with the POT there, which is was almost sold out the last time I checked. Um, And then I will also be teaching a couple different workshops, uh, in Seoul, uh, uh, before we head home. Uh, so if you have, um, any questions about either place where you can take workshops with me, please set us up.Okay. July, um, we are coming to the uk. We have very, very few spots available for the Mullet Tour. The business in the front, the Pilates in the back. Oh yeah. Um, so those on the wait list were getting, um, first tips. They're also getting the early bird price, and then we'll open that to the public. Yeah. Um, Brad Crowell: and that's coming to O P C.Dot me slash uk and take it on the wait list. Yeah. Lesley Logan: And if it is after April when you hear this, you can still go there. Yeah. Uh, the early bird will have passed, but you can still go there and get the information. Uh, September we'll be in Poland. Um, you actually can, um, start snagging your spots right now.So if you get on the wait [00:06:00] list there, I'll send you to the place where you can go. lesleylogan.co/poland. Um, we'll make sure you get information and you can take privates with me what, uh, during this conference and they'll be flashcards as well. Yeah, so if you're in Europe and you're tired of the shipping, two awesome options to save a talent shipping and hang out in real life, which is way more fun Brad Crowell: going back one month.Going, going forward one month, going back one month to August. Lesley Logan: Oh, and before we go to Poland, Brad, myself, and our dogs are going to do a West Coast tour. Um, so you want to get on the wait list for this opc.me/tour. Um, you guys, we are super, super excited about this. We're working with people to pick locations, states, um, make this a big, badass circle, uh, just sort truly a summer party of Pilates. Brad Crowell: And it's looking like we're gonna go south to from Vegas, south to San Diego, and then up the coast, um, all the way up to Seattle. Yeah. So if you're anywhere in that route and, you know, within a couple hour drive and you wanna come hang, uh, we'll be [00:07:00] posting all the dates mm-hmm.And specifics, um, as we get closer. But to make sure you get that information, just go to opc.me/tour. Lesley Logan: Yep. And then. Jumping ahead. Um, after Poland, we go to Cambodia, we will come home in between, but ...(Brad: that'll be in October). Yeah. And there's still a few spots left. Um, although it's filling up really fast and just gonna be, this gonna be an amazing, amazing time....(Brad: I'm so fired up). Oh my gosh. We already know who's coming with, who's signed up, and like we've got Australians, we've got some people from the States. We got a, uh, is Ainley Ainleys from the UK or is she from Yeah, so we are like, We're going global. We're gonna all meet in one amazing jungle. So, Brad Crowell: so yeah.More info on that. lesleylogan.co/retreat. L e s l e y. Logan, Lesley Logan: if you're a type eight person trying to remember all these links, you're just gonna the show notes and just, yeah, just on the Brad Crowell: show notes. They'll be on the show notes Lesley Logan: Uh, and finally, uh, November. Um, I'm coming to Miami for POT and um, I'll be with our amazing friend Erica Quest. And we're also doing a [00:08:00] fun little workshop around there, so if you want more information on that, just hit me up and then yeah, just stay tuned. Stay tuned. We'll get you more links. We're clearly good at that. Okay, we're almost to talking to Jake Kelfer. Sorry guys. I got excited about like all the European vacations.Um, but before we get into Jake's interview, uh, recap, do we have a question to respond to Mr. Brad? Brad Crowell: We sure do. Uh, the question is, what are your favorite books right now, or favorite podcast beside your own? ...(Lesley: Do you wanna go first?) Oh yeah. First? Sure. Okay. Yeah. Um, uh, so I love to read, uh, non-fiction, or sorry, fiction books.Um, I don't really read non-fiction Lesley Logan: very often. I'm gonna out him every quarter. He goes to this gentleman's hang and they all talk about the books that they bring and everyone brings like some sort of non-fiction political book that's like life-changing, award-winning. And they had these deep discussions and Brad is like, Brad Crowell: and I was like, I read, I reread [00:09:00] Harry Potter for the 75th time.Um, I'm a big, massive fan of an author named Michael J. Sullivan. He is prolific, he's written like 20 plus books. Um, and I've listened to 'em all multiple times. Um, it is one of my favorite go-tos. It's one I am winding down at the end of the day and I want to listen to some ear candy. Um, and not stress about anything or think about anything else that can get lost in the stories, um, that he writes. There're amazing. So, um, anything he's written is really, really fantastic. Michael J. Sullivan, so he's one of my favorite authors, um, and podcasts. Um, I'm. A big fan of Smartless. Uh, I love, uh, uh, just kind of goofing off with those guys is what it feels like. Um, but I know that leads directly into one of your new pods.Lesley Logan: Okay, so we are listeners, smartless, and I do love Smartless, but I go back and forth because sometimes I'm like too stressed out for them. I'm like, dude, they not understand the world right now. I don't, [00:10:00] so sometimes I'm like, I just want someone to tell me that I'm not crazy. Uh, but we were listening to 'em the other night and they actually interviewed Jameela Jamil, and she's a comedian who has a new podcast called Bad Dates. You guys, I'm so pissed that there was only three episodes. Do they not know how to drop a podcast? You have to have 12. You have three on day one, and then you do every other. And then after two weeks you start going into your regular cadence. And I'm just gonna say that's my feedback for Jameela Jamil's podcast called Bad Dates because it is awesome. It doesn't matter what, Brad Crowell: despite that, they still hit the top lessons. Lesley Logan: Yeah, they're in, yeah. Yeah. They're in in New and noteworthy with not Paint Lane the game. So good for them. Uh, also Smartless, which is the number one podcast in the world, like, told them, everybody listened. But um, so you guys, what I love about it, It is, there's nothing about it that makes you think of work or politics or the world. You are just listening to comedians mostly, and writers and really just good [00:11:00] storytellers who are gonna be fairly famous or you might recognize their faces, talk about bad dates they've been on, and it's not that the person on the date is the bad one. They could be the bad one. Yeah. And I'm... Brad Crowell: Unfortunate incidences. I mean, it's, oh my gosh, Lesley Logan: hilarious. It's hilarious. I cried laughing. I've listened to every episode two times because I couldn't wait for Brad. So I did like little pot adultery and then I made him listen.I made him sit and listen with me watching him because it was so funny. So that's my fair pod. Besides my own right now and book, give the book. So, of course, um, I've been talking about creating super fans. We have the author of that coming out really soon. And then, um, Jake's, uh, I've got his book, Big Idea to Bestseller, so I'm loving that.Um, and then I'm gonna pull a book out from like mini moons ago. 48. Brad Crowell: We're on this moons thing today. We are, Lesley Logan: we're all, um, uh, at the time we're recording this, just the full Moon [00:12:00] into it was epic. So it was epic. Oh my gosh. You guys it's stunning. Anyways, back to one of my best favorite books that everyone should read is called The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love by Sonya Renee Taylor. And. You guys, it's just a beautiful book. You can listen to it on Audible, you can read the book, you can check it at a later library. Uh, a must listen to, uh, in today's day in a world where we should all stop being so perfect about our bodies and love the ones we have, so, okay, those are my books....(Brad: Love the one you with. Love the one you with. Love the one you with.) Do you know the rest of the lyrics? ...(Brad: No). Brad Crowell: Yeah, I think they repeated like 50 times. I'll find out.Okay, now let's talk about Jake Kelfer, inspired by Kobe Bryant and beginning his career with a Los Angeles Lakers, Jake [00:13:00] Kelfer is a lifestyle entrepreneur and bestselling author dedicated to helping others write books to leave a lasting impact. He's the creator. Big idea to bestseller program and the life enjoyment matrix, which we're gonna talk about today cuz it's so cool.Which helps individuals grow a business and live the life that they love. Yeah. Lesley Logan: So this is so fun. We actually did this interview on the road, uh, we did it from our hotel room. Yeah. Brad Crowell: In Monterey. Monterey. Lesley Logan: Yeah. And also we, um, got this guest because of UK Claire. Who, um, obviously we're gonna go see when we're doing our mullet tour, but she had her an amazing episode on the pelvic floor, so she's been working with Jake.Um, she's gonna get her book out, so she's, it's amazing. I actually know that her first draft is like, ready to go, so ...(Brad: I did not know that). Oh yeah. Hello. This is how, this, how all happened. Although it could have happened because. Jake knows all of our other friends. I know as Brad Crowell: soon as you started talking, it was like, oh yeah, Lesley Logan: course we, we, we know all these people.I guess we should have been friends already, but thanks [00:14:00] Claire. Um, so, okay, let's talk about the life enjoyment matrix. Um, so this does take, you have to like sit down and do this, and I think this is where people get a little like, oh, I just wanna know and they wanna skip this over, but when you do this, it's gonna be great. So first, decide the type of life you want to live, and then that's your life enjoyment. Yeah. And then ask, how am I making decisions that lead to greater enjoyment of my life? So like, maybe you go through your day and is, is this morning habit that I have, is this routine? Is this actually creating the life I wanna live?Is this actually helping me? Like, go through it and then ask yourself how you're making these decisions. Are they happening to you? Are you just like, let, are you just like a people pleaser, just doing things like ask yourself that. Then this is cool. So let the, he uses numbers to take up the emotion. Uh, sorry guys.My dog moved and it shocked my ears. I just need to take a moment. Brad Crowell: You, [00:15:00] um, you might wanna go watch that on YouTube. Yeah. ...(Lesley: I like jumped outta my booster). Shoot. She jumped out of her booster. Yeah. Lesley Logan: Okay. So, Let the numbers take the emotion out of it and go for what is going to bring you the most joy. So like this is actually really great because I think sometimes we get a little emotional when it comes to our goals or it comes to certain things and he uses numbers to kind of put things on a scale so it's less personal, it's less like there's something wrong with you.And he talked about like how when he eats dairy pizza, it's like nine outta 10 on life enjoyment. Like it feels, it tastes so good. He gets stuck at home feeling nauseous, which makes his life a one. And the average is like a five. I would call that average maybe a four. But, but at any rate, um, so. That is like one way to like look at something or he can make a decision like, okay, if I eat a dairy free pizza, it's a seven. It's not the most exciting thing, but then I can keep hanging with my friends, which is a 10. Now I'm averaging [00:16:00] 8.5. So you're making decisions based on the enjoyment you want to have in life versus this tastes super good in the moment and then I'm paying for it later. Um, I've done that. Brad Crowell: Yeah. Well, I mean, I think it's, uh, I think we've all done that.I think the most obvious one is like, should we have that extra glass of wine. Right. And you're like, oh, I'm, I'm feeling high right now. This is great. I want to maintain, I'm just gonna keep on going cuz I'm at a 10. This is so good. And then the next morning you are at a negative 10 because you're like, oh, I can't even think, move cloud brain not functioning.Yeah. So, you know, I mean, if it's a, if that's a one. 10 and five, you know, you'd be back at a five. Yeah. On an average Lesley Logan: there. So like, not great. So I think what this will go, kind of this matrix will help you do is like, as you're planning things, before you even say yes to something, just go, yep. Let me get back to you.And then ask yourself on a scale of one to 10, where's the enjoyment of hanging out with these people? Yeah. And if you're like, well, or whatever Brad Crowell: it is that you wanna do, like maybe it's, um, you know, staying up late to watch another episode of your favorite show [00:17:00] mm-hmm. And then you don't get enough sleep. So how do you feel the next day you can weigh those two things against each. Lesley Logan: By the way, if it has to do with the, um, white lotus, you will never regret the sleep that you let go of because then the next day you don't have to worry about spoilers. So this is, I, I, however other things we do, do this unconsciously and I think it's gonna be a lot of fun to us to like, Put numbers to a lot more things because I have definitely been like, oh, do I wanna do that?Do I wanna watch one more episode of this thing? Or do I wanna walk the dogs? Or if I watch one another's a thing, then I can't walk the dogs. Which one is gonna win right now in the enjoyment field? Sure. And you get to decide it can change day to day. So I thought it was Brad Crowell: cool. But also I think it's funny because, you know, we, I think that there's like a short term versus a long term that he could overlay into this concept too, where, you know, in the short term it's a 10, but in the long term it's a one or a five, you know? Mm-hmm. In the, in the short term, it's a, um, uh, you know, he's feeling like he's sacrificing. Uh, by eating that dairy free pizza. But in the [00:18:00] long term it's even more beneficial because it's benefiting us' life. So, you know, the short term versus the long term, uh, enjoyment. I Lesley Logan: gotta be really honest. I just got my blood results back. Um, and I can tell you right now my short-term decisions of some things that I don't do are having some crazy amazing long-term decisions on my blood work. It's pretty awesome. Nice. I do like add one thing to my life after this blood test. So, um, well actually a few things, but nothing outta my, like the, the one thing that's in my control, the hormones were not, so that's different, but like of the eating things, of the choices on the enjoyment scale. So, um, which means I get to have more avocados because they are on the antioxidant list and I was like, oh, I was gonna say no to more guacamole.Brad Crowell: I love that. Well, so for me, I, he kind of said something in like a offhand comment and he kind of rushed through, but I just thought it was so visually poignant that I wanted to call attention to [00:19:00] it. He was talking about his personal story and he just kind of said, yeah, you know, well, I wanted to get through that, that ceiling and make it a floor. And I thought, I've never actually thought about that before. That's so funny. We talk about the ceiling, the glass ceiling, breaking through the barrier, all this stuff. And he said he wanted, not only did he wanna break through it, but he wanted to make it his floor. And I was like, wow, okay. And he said, here's how to do it.You need to focus your efforts. Um, you need to go all in on one thing. Um, shut down all of the distractions. Um, and then his motto is, get 1% better every day. And there's so many things we can talk about here, but, um, this is something that is particularly challenging for me, uh, because I love to be involved in a thousand different things, but what he was talking about was, when he realized that helping others get their books created, written, published, and grow their, you know, get that out there, uh, was the thing that he [00:20:00] really enjoyed and got the most out of.Then he actually shut down all of his other revenue streams, which is like, oh wow, that's crazy. Um, that's, that's daring. And he said, he, he said, you know what? Let's just give it a try and see what happens. And over the next year when he was able to focus his efforts. Uh, they had a record breaking year. Yeah. And, uh, you know, that's the going all in on one thing. And, uh, so shutting down all other distractions, even revenue streams, that can be really challenging. But for a lot of people, I, I know this is hard for me because there's so much fear in that. Like, when I, I remember when I was working my full-time job and I was doing web development like, you know, at lunch and, and after in the evening, like after I got home, um, It felt like how am I ever gonna replace my full-time income with my part-time gig that I'm, you know, my business that I'm doing. And um, uh, there was a lot [00:21:00] of fear of letting go of that distraction cuz that was what it was turning into was my job was turning into, like, I wasn't enjoying it. That's for darn shore. And it was not, you know, like I couldn't be doing client calls because I was at the office doing my job. And um, you know, but letting go of that job really was a challenge cuz the golden handcuffs feeling and you know, just the simple fear of what if it doesn't work, you know, but, uh, ...(Lesly: just that little thing, fear). You know, minor deeds. But once I, you know, once I did, I, I didn't end up making this a career, but, you know, we made way more money when I had the time to focus on talking to our clients, getting new clients.Pitching new clients, building new websites, um, than we did when I was just working at, you know, once or one or two, three Lesley Logan: hours a day. Yeah. And then when you got rid of all that stuff and just went on, on our thing that we now do together, we make more. Yeah. I mean, there's less distractions Brad Crowell: actually. That's like a really, um, compelling story because, uh, with when, when I [00:22:00] was doing, uh, the websites, importing all those products and selling on Amazon and doing like filming events and stuff, like I was making enough money to live and eat and pay the bills and whatnot, but, Uh, when, when I got rid of all that and focused, you know, my efforts with you on our company, then it paid for both of our lives.Yeah. You know, where I was struggling to make ends meet when I was doing all that other stuff, so. You know, it's, this is like, uh, I just thought it was really cool to call attention to this again. Mm-hmm. Um, you know, if you're doing like a dog walking business and trying to teach Pilates or something, what if you focused or what if you're doing, you know, I don't know, babysitting or something, whatever it is.If you're distracted in that way, um, trying to, you know, um, what if you let go of something and focused on the main thing? Lesley Logan: Yeah. We have an agency member who put, um, put, took a leave of absence at her. It was [00:23:00] a part-time gig, but like, it was more than 20 hours a week of employed because she'd have to drive almost two hours each way.Yeah. Plus full day. And so then, while that doesn't sound like a lot, she still had like her farm and she still had, you know, her business. And so you start to go, well, where's the time to promote the business that you wanna be having, that you wanna be teaching? And so, It took 90 days to go full on on her pilates business and she's able to go to networking things. And also to be honest, she couldn't have gotten gotten to a real job anyways cuz of all the snow that was there. But it's just like snow. The snow that was there. Snow, snow, they had tons of snow. That but any, the point is, is like it is so scary, but you don't have to like, You don't have to like rip the net away. You can actually do a leave of absence and try things out. Or you can, you know, you can give yourself like, okay, I'm gonna do it for this long and I'm gonna see what happens. And, um, if that's an acting career in LA I'm gonna tell you right now, six months is not long enough. Just, just so you know, just giving you that. But [00:24:00] if it's something else, you probably can start to see possibility in six months, uh, of just dedicating yourself to one Brad Crowell: thing. Yeah. And, and another like side note to all that, his motto is, get 1% better every day. And I thought, wow, that is really, uh, like that, that doesn't seem too intimidating. Lesley Logan: It makes me think of Allen Stein Jr's thing too, which is like at the end of each day he asks himself, if he's closer to the person he wants to be, right?Which is like closer, can be 1% is closer. Brad Crowell: Totally. And, uh, you know, like adopting that, it, it allows the perfectionism, uh, you know, to kind of be sidelined because you don't have to, um, you know, it doesn't have to be a hundred percent better. It can be 1% better. Mm-hmm. You know? Mm-hmm. And, and if, especially if you are, you know, going back to this, uh, lifestyle enjoyment matrix are, uh, if you are, you know, making one micro decision each day, that helps.[00:25:00] Bump those, uh, averages up. Uh, you know, that's, that's gonna be, over time it compounds, it's gonna be amazing. Just like you were talking about with the long term in your life. So how can you turn your ceiling into a floor? Yeah, Lesley Logan: it's like a snow globe.Brad Crowell: Okay, so finally let's talk about those, Be It action items. What bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items can we take away from your convo with Jake Kelfer? Lesley Logan: Okay, here we go. If you want to achieve greatness, you must enjoy the pursuit in the process. (...) Space for that, because I feel like a lot of people complain about the process, are frustrated with the process.Even I'll sometimes go, I'm so tired of this being so hard, but you have to enjoy it. The process, at least some of the process, part of the process, the pursuit of it. Um, so here's how he suggests to do it. It's [00:26:00] called the ACE method. Um, so easy to remember. A is action. Take positive and intentional action in the direction of your dream.Yes. So, hello. Being kind to yourself and having positive thoughts around those actions and taking that action is gonna distill the fear, right? Um, connection is C, build meaningful and intimate connections to find the right people to support you. This is huge. Like every, the reason Jake is here is because of connections.Yeah. He could have been here sooner with other connections, but he was here when he is here because of, of a different connection, right? Like one. Jake and I probably would never have thought would've been one. Um, but such a huge thing. And so all the different things that we often happen, this house we live in is all from different connections. And so oftentimes we like shy away from making those, or we think, who am I? But you have no idea who you, who you are to offer people things. And it's actually a lot of fun to connect to other people, to different things. Um, and then what you should then do is typically, how [00:27:00] can I help you? And then you can ask for the connection you need, um, enjoyment.Um, That's e, e for enjoyment. Um, can you imagine if I was like, like say, you know, when you like say a letter E for N for Nancy, it's like E for enjoyment. E Um, how do you spell your name? Lesley. L, E for enjoyment, S, Okay. Um, you must enjoy yourself in order to achieve the life you're destined Brad Crowell: for. Yeah, I think I, I think that was probably the most common thread through this whole thing is his, you know, the life enjoyment matrix. He talks about including enjoyment in the Be It action item, like how do you achieve greatness? Um, uh, you know, and, and just consistent throughout the whole thing was the pro the idea that you can, you should, you must enjoy what you're doing in order to achieve the life of greatness that you want.Lesley Logan: Yeah. And like, you're not gonna shame yourself to being at the top. And [00:28:00] if you somehow do, like we've heard athletes who get all the way to the top. And they hated the whole way there. You don't end up staying at the top going, this is a party, right? You kind of have that like, like expectation hangover. So, so it's, the more you can really enjoy yourself, the easier everything is to, to put one step in front of the other, to show up and do the scary thing. To have the life you wanna live, to have people in your life that you wanna be around. Because people wanna be around persons having a good time. Um, you guys, you sure do. Jake is, he's like a book papa, like you guys, he's, he is gonna help you take your big idea and make it a book. And if you're like, I've never thought I was gonna be a writer, um, go listen to Roxy's episode.Um, I love it when you call Brad Crowell: me book pop. Lesley Logan: Put your hands in the air.Oh my God. That's the best. Um, okay, so anyways, uh, if you are wondering if you [00:29:00] have an idea that's worth writing about, talk to Jake. His team is gonna take care of you and really help you understand how you can go from saying, I'm not a writer to having a book. People are reading books, guys. Yeah. And, um, totally. And, and, and, and more people should be writing books worth reading. And that includes if you'll listen to this, that's you. Brad Crowell: So Yeah. And if you, if you, uh, do take, uh, start a convo with him, uh, let him know that you heard him on the pod Lesley Logan: Yeah. And what your takeaway was. Yeah. Because people need to hear that their words made a difference.Yeah. So, um, it makes them feel awesome and seen, and don't we all wanna feel that way? I'm Lesley Logan. ...(Brad: And I'm Brad Crowell). Thank you so much for joining us today. How are you gonna use these tips in your life? We wanna know Tag the Be It pod, tag Jake Kelfer. Oh yeah. And you know, oh, Brad Crowell: and PS he is gonna, he offered to give a free copy of his book to you.Oh. If you DM him on. Just DM him on ig. Tell him that you heard about the pod and say you'd love a free copy of the book and he'll send you it. Lesley Logan: Oh, [00:30:00] well we should have said that at Brad Crowell: the top. I know. I just remembered right now and I forgot to put it in the show notes. Okay, so in the notes, we're gonna, Lesley Logan: we're gonna also say this, you're gonna hear this at the end, and we're gonna play, we're gonna, we're gonna record again. For the beginning because this is too good. So DM him if you want his book. Who doesn't want a free book? We all need to read things. And if you liked my list of books, his was one of 'em. So there you go. Oh yeah. Um, all right. Loves, well, we'll see you tomorrow cuz now we have Friday episodes. Brad Crowell: That's right.FYF coming your way tomorrow. Lesley Logan: Yeah. And we wanna share your wins. So you can send 'em to the, uh, Be It pod on Brad Crowell: Instagram. Oh. And stick around to the very end because we got some outtakes that's been happening. There's Lesley Logan: always outtakes. Um, and the team does collect them for bloopers on the YouTube, but uh, we're adding them into the end of the pod because you know what you need to know that we are not perfect. You're not perfect. ...(Brad:And we're enjoying the process.) And we are enjoying that. So have a good laugh on our behalf. Love you. I know. That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You [00:31:00] See It Podcast. Why? Cuz people finally let people know we actually like the Choco taco.Interesting. Okay. Ready? No, you look really short for some reason. Are you? I'm sitting up. Yeah, my feet are on the ground. It's just the weirdest thing. I dunno why I am shorter than you.You just have like a lot of space over your head though. I don't know. Like can the chair, can the chair go up? I don't know. No, didn't go here.Sit on a pillow. I got one. Oh, there you go. I feel super tall. No, you actually look normal and you can bring the mic up slightly if you want. I'm on a booster seat. That's what I feel like. I never got to sit in those when I was a kid, cuz I was already too tall, didn't need one. In another solo episode of the 'cult'ure series, we take a deep-dive into childhood conditioning and explore how ‘family systems' might shape susceptibility to influence. Candice shares a recent ah-hah around her 'triggers' and how allowing herself to feel has been helping her to step outside of culty indoctrination. Complacency is discussed, as the near enemy of mindfulness and as a roadblock to authentic self-awareness. Inspired by the work of John Bradshaw, Candice shares how to tell the difference between healthy and toxic shame, and how the latter reinforces 'the cult persona,' and a tendency to act as if we are more or less than human. She then shares what it's like living just outside of Sedona - a new-age mecca that wreaks of 'cult'ural appropriation. Find out the history behind Sedona's claim to fame - the energetic vortexes, and what the spiritual ego has to do with it all. Finally, be sure to stick around, because the episode wraps with the poignant (and anonymous) sharing of former Org members' stories. Purity culture is reality checked, orthorexia is defined, and a wake-up call is inspired by the work of courageous body-positive activists who are calling out the cults of ableism and anti-fat bias. There's a lot packed into this episode; you may have to listen twice.Referenced in this Episode:Unlocking Us with Brene Brown [podcast] — The Near and Far Enemies of Fierce Compassion, Parts 1 & 2Healing The Shame That Binds You, by John BradshawThe Drama of The Gifted Child, by Alice MillerWe Have to Stop Thinking of Being ‘Healthy' as Being Morally Better [article], by Aubrey Gordon. Anna and Nina have realized that they tend to attract clients that want answers about their purpose in life, or are looking to generate hope around things that feel impossibly hard.  So many of us go about seeking purpose backwards and struggle with feeling like we need to be good enough for our destiny, rather than accepting that purpose is neutral and exists in many containers. Anna and Nina discuss the expansiveness of purpose and how to look within in order to embody it. Nina also shares her message to any parents out there who struggle with finding purpose in their parenting and touches on the damaging nature of perfectionism, especially when it comes to raising children.  Part of tapping into your purpose requires a sense of hope, but also a stripped down version of your expectations and an honest look at reality. Anna and Nina chat about how hope can sometimes feel like a delusion, but it's important to not overindulge in your own angst and get bogged down by negativity. They bring up how they work on hopefulness with clients who are struggling with particularly tender difficulties, including infertility and heartbreak.  Listen to the episode on https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-be-human/id1575612024 (Apple Podcasts), https://open.spotify.com/show/1V8taFSZQDpMcXkrP5dGrs?si=PtYeksWSRLGn_vu1vWBvMw&dl_branch=1 (Spotify), https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjYXN0LmNvbS9yTHpBOUg2Mg (Google Podcasts), https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa34c28b-2ac5-49cb-9fc7-15328379d789 (Amazon Music), https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-how-to-be-human-84625355/ (iHeartRadio), https://www.stitcher.com/show/how-to-be-human-5 (Stitcher), or on your favorite podcast platform Topics Covered: Why it's important to remove all of the things that make us doubt our innate purpose  The misconception that purpose is a single thing  A reflection exercise for anyone who feels like they don't know where to start looking for their purpose  Having the courage to take action and learn from failure   What it feels like to be out of sync with your desire Producing genuine hope and belief, not toxic positivity  Resources Mentioned: https://www.amazon.com/Body-Not-Apology-Radical-Self-Love/dp/1626569762 (The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love by Sonya Renee Taylor )  Get in Touch: https://howtobehumanpod.com/ (How to Be Human) https://www.instagram.com/howtobehumanpod/ (How to Be Human Instagram) https://www.instagram.com/annatoonk/ (Anna's Instagram) https://www.instagram.com/humannamednina/ (Nina's Instagram) https://www.annatoonk.com/ (Book a session with Anna) https://ninaendrsthealth.com/ (Book a session with Nina)

That is a radical statement! Being well is something we all want. We follow the latest diet trends. We take the recommended supplements. We become "fat phobic," telling ourselves we are not "good enough" if we are overweight. Debra Benfield, founder and owner of Body in Mind Nutrition, told me that there is an ageist diet/wellness culture that leads to a lack of body respect in the Pro-Aging movement. Deb wants to blaze a path into elderhood without the scales! Topics covered: Internal biases around eating, diet, weight and fitness, specifically focused on women over 50 We have learned that in order to be loved, be worthy or be of value, we must be thin, This belief leads to disordered eating, feeling badly about ourselves.  Intuitive eating - eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full. Stay out of your head, stop counting calories, stop tracking,  We can feel overwhelmed by so many different diets and even may have forgotten how to eat a healthy diet. Research shows that it is not obesity that causes heart disease, diabetes or other diseases, it is actually the behaviors or genetics or trauma. You can be fat and fit.  Being thin does not equal healthy. Episode Takeaways: 1. Wrap your head around the idea that all bodies are worthy 2. These suggestions can help you age with vitality and protect you from disordered eating Move your body so it feels like play Be socially connected Manage your stress Use intuitive eating Thanks so much for listening. I also wanted to mention the What's Next Group Coaching program. This program helps answer the question Who am I now? Who do I want to be? Will I ever feel useful and productive in society again? And what is my value to my family, my community, my society now that I am no longer fully employed or following my career path? It really can be a program that can move you into your next chapter with great comfort and ease. So let's get to what we're talking about today. And I've been struggling with this topic a little bit, the toxicity of the wellness culture. I mean, I mostly try to eat healthy. I take supplements. I exercise some most of the time. No, probably not as much as I should. And I have to admit, I am a fair weather walker and hiker when it is cold and rainy. I am not the one that's out there, but I do get uncomfortable when the scale says I've gained a few pounds and all of these beliefs about weight and fitness and behaviors. These all are reinforced by my family and by the media. You know, we all hear comments like, oh, she's really put on some weight or, well, wouldn't she be pretty if she just lost some weight? Advertisements and TV shows portray happy, slender people and not so happy larger people. And if they're heavy older people, the images can be even more demeaning. So preparing for this show has shown me how much I've bought into these ideas that fat is bad and skinny is good. Did you know that we as a society spend over $35 billion on diet products annually? It is a lucrative industry. And diet culture is that collective set of social expectations telling us that there's one way to be. And one way to look. And one way to eat. So that we are a better person. And we're a more worthy person if our bodies are in that mold that we all hear about. So today we're going to dissect what it is meant by the wellness culture, how it can be toxic and how it affects us as we age. And I really want you to join in and ask questions, because a lot of this is learning for me, and I'm sure it's learning for you. So feel free to join us. And let me bring on our expert today. Her name is Deborah Benfield. Hi, Deb. Wendy. Hey, everybody. So Deborah invites you to join her on the intersection of pro aging and body liberation on her newest website. DebraBenfield.com. From her experience, she understands how aging creates vulnerability to the ageist, diet, wellness, culture, and how frustrating it is to find a profound lack of body respect in the pro aging movement. And I had to check with her on that quote because I was like, Wait, pro, aging? Aren't we, like all about accepting where we are? Well, you're going to hear about some of how it's not accepting. Deb is a registered dietitian nutritionist with over 35 years of experience in that field. She's also a registered yoga teacher. She is the founder and owner of Body and Mind Nutrition, a group practice of registered dietitians and nutritionists. And like I said, the founder of her newest site, which is more focused on the aging, she'll tell us more about that. Deborah Benfield She's passionate about preventing and treating disordered eating and eating disorders and supporting you in feeling more comfortable and confident in your relationship with food, eating and your body. So, Deb. Tell me how you got into this field in the first place and then kind of what your journey has been to move more into the aging space. Well, I first want to thank you. I really appreciate your openness to this conversation, because I know it's kind of tricky and surprising to think about how the pro aging movement may have some problems with how we look at bodies. And I think that may be more true for women's bodies. I also want to say that my pronouns are she, her, hers. And I want to talk just a minute about my vocabulary. I you'll hear me say obesity right now as a word that I will not be saying any further. I believe that the way we talk about bodies further stigmatizes pathologizing as bodies that are fat and fat, in my worldview is a descriptor just like you have red hair. Wendy I believe that it's just a descriptor of who you are. I have brown eyes, so it's a description of me. So fat in my worldview is not pejorative. It's a description. So you'll hear me say a fat and not the ugly words. And I'll talk a lot more about that later, too. So I got into this because I really like talking to people as whole human beings. So when I started my career, I pretty quickly started referring clients to therapists to talk about issues outside of what was going on in their eating and their relationship with their bodies. And I happened to develop a relationship with a therapist. That was amazing. Her name is Joan Wilkins, and she was my supervisor, and her specialty was eating disorders. So I, very early in my career, started developing this curiosity and interest in learning more. And it's just kind of become what I do. And I'm very passionate about the work. It's very rewarding to watch and work with a woman who starts to become more powerful in her life and doesn't kind of give her power away by wanting to shrink herself. So I hope that's all well. And so, you know, we talked about the early time we're getting into the eating disorders, but now you're moving into how it's affecting us as we age. So what brought your interest there? Well, I will be 64 in December. And when I turned 60, I also became a grandmother for the first time. Oh, congratulations. Thank you. So something happened in my head where I just wanted to do more research on what we know to be true about how to support aging with vitality and being who I am and understanding what I understand about diet and wellness culture. I was absolutely shocked by how the anti-aging messages hit me hard and fast that I had to get through what I consider to be a bunch of bullshit. I didn't ask you if I can say those kinds of words on your show. Of course, again, this is an adult show. But it just felt like I had to wade through a lot of things that I knew were not based in science and I knew were very adjust and what I consider to be phobic. So I quickly saw that I had to dig a little deeper and I really couldn't find what I was looking for. So I realized that I had to I wanted to create what I think people are needing, what I needed to start with. And it's been it's been fascinating to me to really look at how you can support aging with vitality without getting pulled into all of the you must lose weight. Yeah. So I want to talk about those biases and I want to talk about internal biases because those certainly do hold us back. I mean, and we have more control over those than we do some of the external biases we hear from the media. So in my world, I talk about living an engaged, meaningful life and getting over that internal bias of I'm too old, I don't have the energy anymore. I don't learn as quickly. And shifting that message. In your world, it's more about eating and diet and weight and fitness. And so what are some of the messages that you hear that are internal biases and how do we address those? Yeah, I think that it's I really love that we're kind of focused on a particular group of people right now because coming of age, when we all came of age, I went back and looked at the timeline of how women's bodies were portrayed in the media. The forties and fifties, women's curvy and voluptuous bodies were heralded as the ideal, the beauty ideal. And as a matter of fact, there are there is evidence of, like ads for weight gain products. Really? Yes. I'll show you. There are like you can't be too skinny in the forties and fifties. That's not appealing. Now, of course, all of this marketed to women. Right. And then guess what happened in the sixties? Twiggy, twiggy. Twiggy entered our lexicon and the diet industry took hold and just blew up. And women quickly believed they had to be like Twiggy and which, in my opinion, is unachievable and ridiculously thin and likely fragile. And if you pursue that kind of ideal, you have to diet. I mean, that's what happened is the women believed that in order to be beautiful, in order to be valued, in order to have worth, they must diet. So I don't know if you watched Mad Men. I watch some of that, yeah. I think the character Betty Draper is an amazing character to talk about when it comes to this, because that show took place when all of this happened and it's set in that time period. They did a great job of showing what happened, especially with women in that time. And she joined Weight Watchers and that was the classic choice. And they show her in several shows going back into the kitchen and sneaking her food and actually bingeing the foods that she was deprived of. So it's really interesting to look at how in the sixties. The dive industry took hold because women felt to be worthy, to be loved, to be valued, they must be thin. And I really feel like that's where it really shifted in a in a big way. And also what you're describing about the money that was to be made based on that. And there are a lot of people that believe that it's not surprising that that's also when the women's movement was taking place and that perhaps there was kind of this interesting way to get women to be disempowered. If they're really focused on dieting, they won't have as much of a voice. They will have as much power. So Naomi Wolf's book, The Beauty Myth, is a wonderful book to read if you want to dig into that concept. Interesting. She's not the only one that believes that, but that book is very powerful. And what's interesting, Deborah, is that if that started in the sixties, here we are. What. 60 years later and it's still going on. I mean, you know, I can look in my in my cabinet, you know, I have the whole body diet. I have, you know, diet for a small planet. I have South Beach diet. I have like all these books because I'm like, oh, gosh, you know, I've got to lose a little weight. And every trend changes. You know, it's like, Whoa, och, don't eat carbs. Well, now you should eat carbs. Don't eat fruit. Well, now you should eat fruit. You know, it's like count calories don't count calories. And it's so confusing and no wonder it creates disordered eating. I don't know about eating disorders, so maybe you can differentiate that for me because I don't understand that. Yeah, we're definitely going to talk about that. I don't know if you want to jump into that now, but I think we're we need to talk. I know it's way outside the scope of the show to get to details about eating disorders, but I think it is helpful to look at what is normal and what is disordered and what is an actual diagnosable eating disorder. Yeah. Do you want to do that now? Well, first of all, Angela says, what was the name of that book you mentioned? It is titled The Beauty Myth. The Beauty Myth. And the author is Naomi Woolf was written quite a while ago, but it's exceptional when it when you look into the principle that we're talking about. So yeah, we can go one of two ways. Why don't you describe the difference right now? And then we'll talk a little bit more about the dieting and intuitive eating. How about that? Okay. So perhaps I feel that eating occurs on a continuum and most of us kind of travel up and down that continuum, hopefully not too far toward disordered eating, but normal eating is. Easy. Normal eating is messy. It's eating when you're hungry. When your body says it's time to eat. And stopping. When you're full and. Even a variety of foods that satisfy you. So that you can actually notice when you're satisfied and full. It is not being in your head, counting and calculating and tracking at all. It is only listening to your body and therefore not struggling with feeling guilty or even ashamed of what you're doing. So there's no reaction in your emotional life and there's no space taken up in your head. You're very simply easily eating when you're hungry. Stop it when you're satisfied. And disordered. Disordered eating is likely getting much more in your head with it. And much more rule based, much more tracking, and therefore more reaction. More in your head following rules, and therefore feeling like you're being bad if you've eaten something that you've decided is bad. And eating disorders are. We have many we have anorexia nervosa. We have bulimia nervosa. We have binge eating disorder. We have arfid, which is a new diagnosis, relatively new ARFID stands for If I Get All This right, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder. And it's really about having a negative experience like choking or vomiting, that's created an anxiety about eating or a sensory issue where there are many foods that you feel like you can't eat, that you can only eat a shorter list of foods. And there's also something called Orlistat, which is basically a group of disorders that don't fit into any other boxes. So it's like a catchall phrase, but there is a disorder to the point of some debilitation in your lifestyle, so we can break each of these down. There's a lot to talk about with you. I know this is where I get hung up, because when you describe normal eating, just eat what you want, when you want until you're full. I mean, I think I had mentioned this to you once, you know, like if I had a plate of chocolate chip cookies here, which is my go to dessert and I have a refrigerator with carrots, celery and lettuce, I'm going for the chocolate chip cookies every time. You know, it tastes good. It's easier than putting together a salad. How is that normal eating? Of course, I'm probably going to beat myself up about it and say, Why did you do that? You know that's not good for you. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I do want to say you mentioned before that, you know, there was this diet and that diet and sometimes they contradict each other. I do want to say that. Probably every single client that I work with comes to me with that particular feeling of overwhelm by all the different kinds of diets that have they've heard about feeling kind of lost and like, Which way do I go? Because they're so contradictory. Also really noticing that they feel kind of like they have forgotten how to eat. Like, actually, like I forgot eat. I've lost my way because of all the diets that they've been on. And they may not have a full blown eating disorder, but they are feeling all of those things. They're trying to find their way back. So the way that we find your way back is by trying to get out of your heads and starting to realize that your body carries innate wisdom that your body actually knows. When you need to be nourished and what even what foods would nourish you and when you've got enough. Now there's a look on your face that is to look at people's faces. It's like, I can't believe that could possibly be true. But if you think about if you've been around a baby, you know that a baby cries a very distinct I'm hungry cry. It's very distinct. And babies pull away when they've had enough, when they're satisfied. We know that if children are allowed to eat with the structure of family meals, with some security around the fact that there will be food and those variety provided without a lot of food rules, without a lot of judgment, without pressure, that over time they will eat a variety of foods and their bodies will go where their bodies are genetically dictated to go. And sadly, nobody really allows that to happen. I think it's more and more true because parents are being taught that this is the way to sorry, actually raise competent eaters to prevent children from getting eating disorders. Because eating disorders are very much on the increase right now, and we're all born with that capacity. It's the culture, the cultural messages, the diets, the millions, billions of dollars that market, those diets that make us no longer trust ourselves. Yeah, I think you're right about parents today. I know when I was raising my kids again, I went through all these different diets, tofu and vegetarian, and then know we're having roast beef and whatever. And, you know, my daughter and this is where. You know, was it because I was putting the pressure on or not? But I mean, she didn't want to eat what I was cooking. And I was like, this is healthy food. You need. To be eating. This. And she does not do that to her kids. And I mean, and we got into some battles over food, you know, which is unfortunate. And Martha makes the point that even when we were young moms, I mean, we had our babies on a schedule, you know, every 3 hours you need to eat at. And so we were raised with that belief that there is a right way and a wrong way to eat. How do we undo that? Well, you know, boy, I don't even know which way to go with this. There's of talk about when I was a mom. Young mom. I was well, I was already a dietician, so I was reading certain things. And the reading that I was I mean, there were folks that were telling young moms to follow the baby. Baby led weaning there. There was that phenomenon that we should say up away. And I don't know if you want to get into all this, but Ellen Satter is the woman's name who wrote all of those books. Those books were available in the eighties and they're still available. There's also a new book called Intuitive Eating for Kids. So it's like parenting with intuitive eating. So this can be prevented or we can develop a little bit more resilience in our children when they hit all the diet messages, when they get to school or when they go to grandmother's house. Because I think that's what you're describing. I don't know. I've heard so many clients talk about that rub in the family around what people say to the children about how they're eating. If you if you think as the grandmother that there are certain rules or that you have concerns about the size of your grandchildren's bodies, you know, you can get all into like, well, should you really do you really need that or like, don't you? Should you eat your vegetables before you get your cookies? All the things you clean your plate or not clean your plate, all those things are not helpful. The children actually can be trusted to feed themselves well if we stay out away again. Very hard for people to believe. But the more you follow this intuitive eating way of feeding yourself and your family, the more you'll prevent disordered eating and eating disorders. So that's why I'm talking about it. And we haven't gotten into aging bodies yet. That's a whole nother. Yeah. And I think I think June raises a good question here. You know, eating because we're hungry or are we eating because we're angry or bored or lonely or tired or. Yeah, so discerning that you can't discern that if you're not slowing down and paying attention if you the principles of intuitive eating. We're way into this really fast. Yeah, let's. Go. The principles of intuitive eating. Start with ditching diet mentality. You have to get rid of the good bad list in your head first so that you can. Really listen to your body. If you're still in your head with what? I shouldn't have this or I should have that. It's very hard to get the discernment to give yourself space for this discernment. So to slow down and eat as mindfully as you can. I know we're all really distracted and moving really fast, so it's not that easy to slow down and notice your body. I mean, I'm a yoga teacher, and the reason I'm a yoga teacher is because I think you have to have embodiment practices where you kind of ground yourself like perhaps if you say grace or if you try to have gratitude for the food in front of you to also notice your body. And I do this because this is what I do. I put my hands on my heart and my belly to notice my own body's hunger first. And the principles of intuitive eating are to dismantle diet culture in your head, to notice your hunger sensation, to eat foods that are satisfying. And we can talk more about that so that you can stop when you're full and emotional eating as the question that's in front of us. That's very real. Emotional eating is normal human behavior. Nobody likes to hear that either. Is actually that's very normal. And can you develop some skills that help you manage your emotions in other ways as well so that you have choices like, I know I'm really angry, so I need to like. Go punch the pillows for a walk or call a friend or write in a journal, or just sit and let yourself feel. Let yourself ride the. Wave of anger because it does pass. All right. So that's a lot. That's a lot. Not easy. I mean, you started by saying, yeah, yeah, okay, good. There's a distinction because I'm going to say you started by saying normal eating is simple, but it's not easy to be mindful to slow yourself down, you know, to be out in a group or to feel frustrated and not want to just go grab a chocolate bar or something. So let's talk about aging, right? So, so easy for me to see how the anti aging movement is displaying perfect bodies and get rid of the wrinkles and all of that. And they're trying to sell something just like the diet industry. But talk to me about how the pro aging industry is not respecting the way we look. Well, what I am noticing on social media especially, is a lot of thin white bodies. So. My the person who taught me the most about all of these issues in our culture is Sonya Renee Taylor. She wrote a book called The Body is Not an Apology. The Body Is Not An Apology. And she talks about how we live in a culture that has a body hierarchy, the default body that's at the top that everybody knows without knowing is thin. Young, male, heterosexual, cisgendered, able bodied, white. Probably neuro normative, you know, all of those things, that kind of body people that live with that kind of body have power and easily belong in our culture. If you are. Anything other than that. And you may have one or more things that are not in that description. You're more in the margins, therefore more marginalized. We marginalize people based on their bodies. And the more marginalized you are, the more marginalized your identity is, the more your risk of wanting to be thin. Because the feeling is, well, I can at least be thin if I am a woman, I can at least be fat. Then if I'm old, I can at least be thin. If I am disabled, I can at least be that great black or brown. I'm can be thin because it brings you into feeling like you may belong. You may have more of a sense of power. In our culture. You're not quite as invisible either. Right. So there's increased pressure and increased pressure to be thin as you age. And if you have any other marginalized identity, it's even more so. In fact, I noticed in the most recent AARP magazine talk about they're all about pro aging right there. One of their articles was How to Stay Thin If You're a Chef. It's like I would not even have noticed that, Deb, if I hadn't been talking to you. But, yeah, it's like. There's a lot of pressure. There is a lot of pressure. A lot of there's a lot of pressure. But now I'm going to be devil's advocate. But we hear that if you are overweight, it's hard on your heart. You are at risk for diabetes. It's harder on your joints and it's not healthy. So how do you how do you deal with that image that we have, that belief that we've been told from the medical world and for years, I mean, even with COVID, oh, you're more at risk if you're overweight. You know, I have so many references for what I'm about to say. It's this is not my opinion. This is I try not to say anything. That's my opinion because I am an old fashioned scientist. I really like to read and learn and speak with an expert, you know, kind of. Status and through that lens. So what I'm going to say is I can send you lots of like links to articles and podcasts, etc.. So all of the resource that talks about. I'm going to say that medical term obesity causes hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, even COVID, and not that it caused COVID. We can talk about that in just a minute. But all of that research is correlational. And not causal. We have no causal research that shows that being a certain way causes a disease process. What we have is certain activity patterns, certain particular dietary patterns. Definitely genetics. Definitely stress. There are many things that we actually do have research on that causes those diseases. And people assume people have assumed because of correlation that's correlated, but it's actually the behavior. I have worked with many folks that are fat, that have high levels of fitness, that have perfect labs. I've worked with very thin folks that are not at all fit and have high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension. You cannot tell by looking at somebody that they're healthy. Being thin does not equal healthy. Losing weight does not equal healthy. As a matter of fact, what we also know is that yo-yoing weight cycling actually does cause hypertension and other aspects of heart disease. So we also know that 95% of people who go on diets regain the weight plus. So dieting is not a solution. So if I understand you right. What you're saying is that. Being fat does not cause. Hypertension does not cause diabetes. It's the lifestyle around that that's causing those illnesses. It's the particular kinds of behaviors. And it may be genetic. It may be stress and anxiety. We also know that trauma having trauma experiences, especially early in life, is related to certain body sizes and diseases. So it's much more complicated than we are, we assume. We make a lot of assumptions that make it very black and white and simplified. And there's a lot of problems with that because then people who are in fat bodies are stigmatized. They especially are stigmatized in the health care setting so that that kind of stress and we also have research that weight stigma is a stressor that can contribute to disease process. So it's such a mess. Because you're afraid to go to the doctor, because you're going to be embarrassed. And it's how you treat it when you do go to the doctor. There's shame. There's fetching, there's body shame that's experienced. That's very legit. So, yeah, it's very, very messy. It's not. I'm afraid in our culture we see it very simply that losing weight is good. Being thinner is good. Certain foods are superfoods and goods, and it's so much more complicated. Then there's also access. Access to food. I think that we actually believe that there is a moral value to food and a moral value to thinness, that people are better people if they're thinner and that certain foods are good. I mean, if you listen to what people say, I'm being sinful. Yeah, I mean, it gets really convoluted pretty quickly. I still need to learn a lot to shift my beliefs and to think that I'm not going to eat those chocolate chip cookies instead of the. Well, something we should talk about with intuitive eating is that there is a psychological phenomenon called habituation. But if you have something that you're deprived of, of course you want to eat it all. That's a normal reaction to deprivation if you have permission to eat the food consistently. Like if you start to bring chocolate chip cookies in and you eat them, you know you can eat them and you know you can have them whenever you're hungry again. You will start to lose interest in the chocolate chip cookies over time. You habituate to cookies and they have less and less and less power over you. Okay. Well, we're getting towards the end here. I mean, we could probably talk for another couple of hours. There's so much to talk about. I know. But give me a couple of takeaways that those of us who are just learning about this for the first time, what we can do to take this into this next chapter of our lives as we are aging. I think the first thing is to wrap your head around the fact that all bodies are worthy. I mean, we can't. White knuckle and control. Our bodies into a particular size and shape. As a matter of fact, the more you try to do that, the more likely you are to get disordered in your eating. And you could you could end up with an eating disorder. And we didn't really get into that very much today. But it's a real problem with midlife and older women because you do feel like you can't control your body. And the more you like knuckle, the more disordered you become. So trying to. Be a little bit more compassionate with yourself and understanding that all bodies are worthy. Number one. Number two, to try to in my research, what I found is the things that really contribute to aging with vitality and protective of getting disordered in your eating are moving your body so that it feels like play. So just like play, you have some joy in it. Trying to be socially connected, trying to actually manage your stress, which I know is easier said than done. And to eat with an intuitive eating mindset. All of that is protective and supports vital aging. So that's enough take aways. Yeah. Thanks. I'm going to learn more about this intuitive eating because I certainly. It can do the good, bad thing. So if you want to reach out to Deborah, you can email her at Deb at Deborah Benfield. Benfield. You can find her on Instagram at Aging Body Liberation. And check out her new website. In fact, Deb, you have some kind of coaching program that's getting ready to start. Quickly, tell us about that. I'm doing what I've been talking about today. I'm doing intuitive eating through the lens of pro aging. Yeah. It's a it's a. A group coaching cohort that begins the end of September. Okay. All right. I'm sure. We could all. For this episode of “Inside Contemporary Dance”, I sat down to chat with the incredibly talented, deeply inspiring, Carlos González and Seth Buckley, who founded the contemporary dance company EYAS Dance Project. Since its foundation in 2018, EYAS has presented works around the world, taken part in international dance Festivals, and received various awards from prestigious choreographic competitions. As part of the company's manifesto, Carlos and Seth describe EYAS dance project as a queer company that supports female, femme, and LGBTQ+ creators. EYAS dance project honors and values physical differences, and transparent communication, and focuses on humanity as the basis of work. We discussed how these values are manifested in their lives, both inside the studio and out in the world. We talked about their creative processes, what it actually means to create a company, their call for reformation in dance companies and dance institutions, their vision for the future of the company (which also involved a shamanic drum ceremony … stay tuned for that…) and so much more!Book recommendation:The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love by Sonya Renee Taylor.Follow EYAS Dance Project here:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eyasdanceproject/Website: https://www.eyasdanceproject.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EYASDANCEPROJECT/?ref=bookmarksFollow “Inside Contemporary Dance”:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/insidecontemporarydance/Website: https://www.insidecontemporarydance.com/If you enjoyed this podcast, please spread the love! In the nearly fifteen years I've been working in the personal development space, I have to say that one of the most recurring challenges I see women face is reckoning with changes in their bodies and what that means for their sense of self-worth. Unless you were magically able to escape the messages we are inundated with in our patriarchal society, it's likely that you've had to navigate the constant, relentless, and radically unforgiving demand placed on our bodies to be perfect.  And, Honey, I am certainly not exempt. In recent years, I've personally delved into learning more about how our notions of beauty have come to pass, how “Big Diet” ensures we all hate our bodies, and the truth about fatness and health. I am certainly no expert, but it has become abundantly clear that there are billion-dollar industries profiting off our insecurities. And, many of them invent new insecurities for us. How generous. In this episode, I look at some things you can actually DO, both internally and externally, to start cultivating a more loving relationship with your body. I also share some scripts of specific phrases you can say when you find yourself dealing with your bestie yammering about their new diet or if your aunt keeps making comments about your body at the family dinner. If you've struggled to know what action you can take to feel more comfortable in your skin, you'll definitely want a listen. Grab a pen and paper because this one is loaded with tangible action steps and resources. This pod explores: Analyzing what you are consuming on a daily basis and how that influences how you feel about your body (Like, what ads you do constantly see on social media?) How commenting on people's bodies (even if you don't know them or don't really like them) can be a huge step backward for your body love journey Some of my favorite activities to generate a more loving relationship with your body A handful of scripts to shutdown inappropriate or offensive comments about your body, other people's bodies, or diet culture altogether HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! If you've had fertility treatment, chances are you filled out some sort of intake form that asked questions about the foods you eat, how much you sleep, medications you take, and so on. Did any of those forms ask about eating disorders?  Turns out, asking about eating disorders is really important - always - but especially when it comes to fertility. Nutrition and overall health are certainly reasons to ask about eating habits, but there are also questions of control, body dysmorphia, fear of weight gain, and even an over-emphasis on healthy eating that can lead to disordered eating.  Judy Simon practices as an RDN, certified health education specialist, and adjunct faculty at the University of Washington. She also owns a private practice, Mind Body Nutrition, PLLC, specializing in reproductive nutrition and eating disorders. Judy co-developed the successful Food for Fertility Program with Dr. Angela Thyer and is recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and as a national leader in the area of fertility and nutrition. Judy offers her patients the unique experience of a non-dieting, intuitive approach to healthy eating. Please have a listen and pass this podcast along to anyone you think could benefit. If you operate in a femme body or identify as female, it's highly likely you've found yourself contending with a litany of body image “issues”. I put issues in quotes because the things that we worry about, and subsequently own as our “issues”, are purposely manufactured to commodify and exploit our bodies. In essence we're programmed to have “issues”. They're given to us. For example, we used to never worry about having body hair. Like, not even a thing. Then, Gillette pops up like, “Hey, we wanna make some money, so how ‘bout you start to think having hair on your legs is gross and give us money to fix it.”  Think about how many products in your pantry, medicine cabinet, dresser drawers, shower, and bathroom vanity have become vaults for a myriad of products designed to change the way you look. Why? Because we have bought into the societal belief that women are valuable based solely on their bodies. And, we have an unbelievably limited view of which bodies are acceptable and permissible. But what if your body was an instrument and not an ornament? Whaaaaaa? Yeah. On this week's show I dial up Dr. Lexie Kite who, along with her twin sister, Dr. Lindsay Kite, has developed a social movement to redesign how we, as women, view beauty, body image, and the body positive movement. This conversation is a call to arms to examine the myopic lens through which we've been conditioned to see our bodies. Why? So we can see the breadth of our value. Because you, my friend, are so much more than a body.  Get ready to wear a hole in this episode, because it will shake you at your core. In the best way possible. This pod explores: Dr. Lexie's mantra you need to start using immediately… like, yesterday How we've been grossly misinformed about what positive body image looks like What it looks like to practice body image resilience  How much of the body positive movement has sorely misdiagnosed the problem (Hint: How focusing on “all bodies are beautiful” may be missing the mark… What!? It is incredibly common for many of us humans, whatever our gender, to be at war with our bodies -- trying to live up to the people we see in the movies, on social media, or even the versions of ourselves in old pictures. This never-enough-ness can lead to an ambient level of self-loathing that can be incredibly destructive. That's where "radical self-love" comes in. Our guest today is Sonya Renee Taylor. Season 6 has been all about finding joy in the messy middle. In the season finale, I'm looking back and the 5 most memorable conversations I've had with guests over the last year. For each one, I'm sharing a bit about what stood out about our conversation, and, playing a bit of the episode so you can hear them explain things in their own words.  Dr. Jeff Speiss is the author of "Dying with Ease," and he joined me early on in the season. I love that he shared about what he's learned from working with people who are dying, and what we can all do to feel more joy while we are alive. He also talked how listening to someone in a difficult time is often the most profound gift you can give them. Tune in to our original full length conversation in episode 268.  Molly Knoderer and I went to high school together and played softball on the same team. She's a co-owner of Legacy Concierge Services, and an author. Her business works with finding care for the elderly, both in working with families and with aging people. I loved that she shared about overcoming obstacles and self doubt. And she also talked about some of the lessons she's learned about how to face hard times (like 9/11) from working with elderly clients. Listen to our whole conversation right here in episode 270.   Lan Cao, and her daughter, Harlan Margaret Van Cao wrote an amazing memoir together title "Family in Six Tones." As an immigrant from Vietnam during the Vietnam war, Lan Cao has interesting perspectives on belonging and family. She shared about how learning the syntax of English as a child gave her a framework for understanding complexities in life, and she talks about how that layered in to her understanding of her daughter as a high school student. You can listen to episode 274 by clicking here. Erica Courdae is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion consultant, and a life coach, and small business owner. She is also the host of Pause on the Play. I had the pleasure of meeting her in 2019 and was really inspired by her talk about "Imperfect Allyship" at She Podcasts. I loved having Erica come on to share what imperfect allyship looks like, and how we can all approach anti-racism in a way that leaves room for honest mistakes as individuals grapple with difficult topics in an earnest way. Listen to episode 283 here. Sonya Renee Taylor is the author of "The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love," and Radical Executive Officer of The Body is Not An Apology, a digital media and education company promoting radical self-love and body empowerment as the foundational tool for social justice and global transformation. It was a true joy to have her on the show, and I loved that she shared about how she defines radical self love. And, I was inspired hearing her talk about she only "gives from her overflow" in regards to activist work. You can listen to this whole delight-filled conversation here on episode 287.  Read the episode notes on the website Sign up to receive the Jump Start Your Joy newsletter Follow Jump Start Your Joy on Apple Podcasts Follow Jump Start Your Joy on Spotify

In this interview, I am so honored to be joined by author Sonya Renee Taylor. Sonya is the author of the the New York Times Bestselling book, “The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love.” She just recently released an updated version of that book, and the “Your Body is Not an Apology Workbook: Tools for Living Radical Self Love.” Sonya is joining me to talk all about radical self-love and joy. And, she shares that when we start to love ourselves, we can transform how we interact with others in the world. One of my favorite parts of our discussion sits at the heart of something that has bothered me about joy recently; the question of “how can I embrace joy if that joy possibly comes at the expense of someone else’s freedom, joy, or access to things?” In other words, where does my own privilege enable me to experience joy when others may not have that same access to it. In talking about altruistic joy, Sonya and I talked about how this relates to her frame work of   “interest buying” or “detriment buying” – in other words, there are things that we do or things that we consume that are in the better interest of all people (altruistic) and there are things that we consume or do that are at the detriment of others.  And here’s where it got really juicy. Sonya shared that she feels that true, altruistic joy is the kind of joy that has no residue. And, this is perhaps one of the most amazing reflections I’ve heard about joy in the 7 years I’ve been talking to guests about it. Here’s what she had to say about it: “What it brings up for me is: joy doesn’t have a residue. There’s no residue on joy. It’s beautiful. If there’s a residue, that’s information for you. That’s information to say, “this might not actually be best interest. This might actually be detriment by it. There is something on it that is not about simply living into the most joyful, highest vibration of myself in the world. There is something that says, ‘I’m trying to clean up something. I’m trying to fix something. I’m trying to extract something externally because it’s coming from a place of lack or scarcity.'” That’s what the residue piece is. And so I think if we can start noticing and getting present with the question of is there a residue after I do a thing? And then, how can I let that be an indicator of whether or not I’m actually in a joy practice. Am I in an interest / buying practice? Or am I in a detriment practice?” Sonya Renee Taylor and I talked about: – her early joys of creating radio shows with her friend – slam poetry festivals, and how entering them fed her soul – how “The Body is Not an Apology” got started – how the Genesis story in the Judeo-Christian tradition relates to shame and body image – how to tell if your joy is coming from an altruistic place, or if it may have residue on it – embracing radical self love – why radical self love is not easy work – the indoctrination of all of us in a society where the hierarchy has a vested interest in keeping us from embracing self love – giving from your overflow, and how that can help you steer clear of burnout – that choosing to spread radical self love feeds itself, and creates room for more radical self-love Resources Sonya Renee Taylor’s Website The Body is Not an Apology Website Support The Body is Not an Apology by making a contribution Sonya Renee Taylor on Unlocking Us with Brene Brown Sign up to receive the Jump Start Your Joy newsletter Follow Jump Start Your Joy on Apple Podcasts Follow Jump Start Your Joy on Spotify

There’s a growing trend in Wellness Culture where opinions and recommendations are increasingly standardized, leaving little room for nuance or exception. Today Erin gives us a peek into how her mind operates in this opinion episode on our wellness and diet culture, and it’s centered on a recently released intuitive eating nutrition book that has a large portion of the wellness world falling into two camps: FOR or ANTI. Unfortunately this leaves a lot of folks who are simply searching for some help to think they have to “choose a side” when it comes to their health. Who’s to blame for this polarization and distortion? Where has our compassion gone? In this episode, you won’t hear Erin take a hard stand for or against this topic, or even defend her own position. Instead she asks questions about our collective reactivity - in the nutrition space and beyond - and attempts to understand what that means about us. How can we utilize that reactivity to affect the change we’re looking for? This one is certainly food for thought... Episode 6. For this episode I talked with Quinn Menier about the book The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love by Sonya Renee Taylor. Quinn is a fellow entrepreneur and podcaster, board certified case manager in behavioral health, and friend of mine and she was gracious enough to come on today to talk about some of the concepts in this book from the perspective of a Black Woman. The Body Respect Free Challenge Opens Saturday Feb 27th! Body Shame and The Black Body Although our conversation certainly isn't comprehensive and frankly is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of these important topics, Quinn and I talk about the following: Body shame from the perspective of a Black Woman, including the additional barriers to body acceptance and radical self-loveWhy certain groups like the Black community have additional barriers to body acceptance and radical self-love, and how understanding and breaking down these barriers is essential for the health of all of usSome ways we can move towards a inclusive view of health, starting with our school systems "It's a lot to unpack." This phase was used at least 3 times in this podcast. We have so much work to do in better understanding issues of racial justice and equity for all bodies. This includes but is not limited to different races, ethnicities, abilities, beliefs, and sexual orientation. This isn't just a matter of social justice and doing what is "right" but a matter of life and death in many ways. We need to start viewing our health as a whole picture. What is Poodle Science? The author discussed the concept of poodle science as a metaphor and illustration of lack of appreciation for body diversity. Check out this video for a video depiction of this. This metaphor is based on the idea that "poodles" meaning the white majority culture conducts health research and measurements that are based on the white majority culture, and do not take into account the fact that diversity is inherent and useful biologically and "poodle" bodies are not going to look or weigh the same as say, "mastiff" bodies. Therefore, for "poodles" to come in and tell mastiff's that they need to lose weight to make their bodies look like poodles isn't helpful or healthy for the mastiff's. We also talk about the body mass index and it's failure to be useful in determining true health, how this wasn't necessarily a new concept to Quinn. We also talk about some of her experiences with weight bias and lack of appreciation for diversity in medical care. Key Takeaways from our Discussion We talk about some tough topics in this podcast, but if you read to the book, you will hear a hopeful message. A message that reminds you that there is a lot that can be done to improve these issues, and we have more control than we think. Here are a few places to start: Keep talking. Only by continuing to have these conversations about the fact that we need to re-think our definitions of health to support the health of everyone will we actually make progress. Even when you don't fully agree with everything we talk about here, that is okay. Let's still have the conversation so we can move forward. It can be hard and uncomfortable at times, but oh-so worth it. Start with yourself. The great news is, not only can we start working on radical self-love within ourselves (of which we have more control), doing so will allow us to better support others getting there. Is it hard work? Of course, we have many barriers as body shame is pervasive. Folks in bodies that aren't the "default body" meaning not the white, slim, able-bodied,

#101: Opal's Commitment to Anti-Racism in Eating Disorder Treatment

The Appetite

How does Opal think about anti-racism work within eating disorder treatment?  After a bit of a hiatus following the murder of George Floyd and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, this episode breaks the silence on what we've been learning and implementing within the walls of Opal: Food + Body Wisdom around anti-racism. Co-Founders Julie Church, Lexi Giblin, and Kara Bazzi sit down with host Carter Umhau to discuss what Opal's been up to the last few months and how treatment at Opal hasn't been adequately anti-racist in the past and what they plan to do about it. They'll share a bit about their own process, how they see the need for anti-racism work within the eating disorder field, and touch on what this looks like in the HAES, RO DBT, and sport worlds.    Links: Aiko Bethea and RARE: Coaching and Consulting   Gloria Lucas -- Nalgona Positivity Pride   Desiree Adaway --Whiteness at Work Summer Series   Barbara Love --The Liberatory Consciousness Model   The Racial Healing Handbook by Anneliese Singh   How to Be Antiracist by Ibram X. COVID-19 has disrupted our normal life and confined us into the spaces of our homes. Many people have been isolated in their houses for weeks, and there is a lack of certainty in how long the quarantines will last. This confinement impacts couples, too. Being in constant, close proximity with each other can erode the novelty in their relationships and bring in grumpiness, irritability, and defensiveness. Even my wife, Yvonne Rainbow Teplitsky, and I recently had our own experience with grumpiness and irritability - and made it through. Rainbow is an artist and the founder & owner of the Artsy Goddess Studio. In today’s episode, Rainbow and I share our recent experience with grumpiness and the steps we took to manage it. We illustrate why grumpiness is a contagion and discuss how a person should react when their partner is grumpy. We discuss COVID-19’s impact on our mood and emotions and describe how defensiveness can erode a relationship. We also highlight the power of humor in alleviating grumpiness as well as underscore how self-awareness and self-care can help combat irritability and defensiveness.   “Have time for reflection and kindness; be with each other and ourselves.” - Yvonne Rainbow Teplitsky     This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It: Our recent experience with grumpiness and how we managed it Why grumpiness and irritability are like contagions How to react when your partner is grumpy or irritated How the pandemic can make us moody The correlation between lack of sleep and grumpiness Why you shouldn’t take another person’s bad mood personally How to influence another person’s mood through kindness and humor Giving your partner space when they’re not in a good mood The impact of self-awareness on combating irritability and defensiveness How defensiveness can erode the quality of a relationship Irritability and grumpiness as symptoms of mood disorders and body pain The effect of movies on our mood and emotions   Related Content: Understanding and Managing Differences in Your Relationships The Art of Apology The Power of Appreciation Emotional Regulation   Connect with Yvonne Rainbow Teplitsky: Artsy Goddess Studio Yvonne on LinkedIn Yvonne on Facebook Email: rainbowmoonsky@aol.com     Let’s Talk About It!   Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Relationships! Human beings are resilient creatures. Amidst the fear, stress, and anxiety brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, people relate to each other kindly and meaningfully, from checking-in online to singing together on balconies. But social distancing and quarantines can challenge even the happiest and most stable relationships. My wife Yvonne Teplitsky—the founder & owner of Artsy Goddess Studio—and I have been spending time in quarantine together. Like many couples in quarantine around the world, we’ve had our share of ups and downs while sharing this experience. In today’s episode, Yvonne and I share our experiences with spending time together while being self-quarantined and how we’re navigating it as a couple. We discuss how we cancelled a trip to Florida in light of COVID-19 and how a quarantine can exacerbate relationship issues. We highlight the importance of communication and intentionally making space to talk about fears and anxiety about the crisis. We also discuss how appreciation can keep us grounded and connected to our partners as well as illustrate how allowing ourselves to feel joy can help us in these trying times.   “It’s like we’ve all been turned upside-down and shaken. Everything is getting reset and we’re asking: “What am I about now and how do I want to continue?’” - Yvonne Teplitsky   This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It: The importance of intentionally making space to talk about fears and anxiety over the coronavirus crisis Creating new routines, setting boundaries, and navigating alone time versus together time while in quarantine How to check-in with your partner instead of placing blame How we respond to and ease each other’s anxiety over the COVID-19 pandemic Cultivating communication skills and things to talk about with your partner while in self-quarantine How to stop bickering and relationship escalations through staying connected The power of bringing humor and joy into your relationships The relationship challenges of being in extremely close quarters Microboredom and how we can respond to boredom while in quarantine The value of physical intimacy in a time of crisis   Resources Mentioned: Understanding and Managing Differences in Your Relationships The Art of Apology The Power of Appreciation Emotional Regulation The Goal of Healthy Conflict Setting Boundaries Without Feeling Guilty   Connect with Yvonne Rainbow Teplitsky: Artsy Goddess Studio Yvonne on LinkedIn Yvonne on Facebook Email: rainbowmoonsky@aol.com     Let’s Talk About It! Dr. Yaba Blay is the Dan Blue Endowed Chair in Political Science at North Carolina Central University. An ethnographer, scholar, and content creator, her scholarship centers on global Black identities and the politics of embodiment, with particular attention given to hair and skin color politics. In 2012, Dr. Blay partnered with CNN to produce Black in America: Who is Black in America? – a television documentary inspired by her book, (1)ne Drop: Shifting the Lens on Race. In it, she explores the interconnected nuances of skin color politics and Black racial identity, and challenges narrow perceptions of Blackness as both an identity and a lived reality. Named to The Root 100 (2014), an annual list of top Black influencers, she is one of today's leading voices on colorism and global skin color politics and, to date, her commentary has been featured across some of today's leading media outlets including: CNN, BET, MSNBC, NPR, The New York Times, Ebony Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Root, Huffington Post Live, Colorlines, Al Jazeera America. Applauded by O, The Oprah Magazine for her social media activism, Dr. Blay is the creator and producer of a number of online campaigns including #PrettyPeriod - a visual celebration of dark-skinned Black beauty - and #ProfessionalBlackGirl - a webseries and multi-platform digital community dedicated to celebrating Black Girl culture. Professional Black Girl is a multi-platform digital community that celebrates the everyday magic of Black women and girls! By announcing ourselves “Professional Black Girls,” we assert an unapologetic identity in a world that too often tries to tell us how we “ought to” act. We know that “acting” like anything other than ourselves robs us of our freedom, so instead, we choose, embrace, and celebrate who we are. We are professional code-switchers. We hold Ph.Ds and listen to trap music. We twerk and we work. We are Professional Black Girls. Jillian Bessett: The voice in the intro and outro belong to songwriter Jillian Bessett. Jillian Bessett is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose evocative lyrics and welcoming stage presence have endeared her to audiences throughout the southwest music scene. Sonya is a former National and International poetry slam champion and author of two books, including The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love. She is an educator and thought leader who has enlightened and inspired organizations, audiences and individuals from board rooms to prisons, universities to homeless shelters, elementary schools to some of the biggest stages in the world. Tarana Burke 's passion for community organizing began in the late 1980s, when she joined a youth development organization called 21st Century and led campaigns around issues like racial discrimination, housing inequality and economic justice. Her career took a turn toward supporting survivors of sexual violence upon moving to Selma, Alabama, to work for 21st Century. She encountered dozens of black girls who were sharing stories of sexual violence and abuse, stories she identified with very well. She realized too many girls were suffering through abuse without access to resources, safe spaces and support, so in 2007 she created Justbe Inc., an organization committed to the empowerment and wellness of black girls. The impacts of Justbe Inc. are widespread, as the program, which was adopted by every public school in Selma, has hundreds of alumni who have gone on to thrive and succeed in various ways. Burke's role as the senior director at Girls for Gender Equity in Brooklyn, NY, an intergenerational nonprofit dedicated to strengthening local communities by creating opportunities for young women and girls to live self-determined lives, is a continuation of what she considers her life's work. Since #MeToo, the movement she created more than ten years ago, became a viral hashtag, she has emerged as a global leader in the evolving conversation around sexual violence and the need for survivor-centered solutions. Her theory of using empathy to empower survivors is changing the way the nation and the world think about and engage with survivors. Her belief that healing isn't a destination but a journey has touched and inspired millions of survivors who previously lived with the pain, shame and trauma of their assaults in isolation.
