Jennifer Carruthers is one hell of a sharp brain on wine. Not surprising. She had a successful career as an engineer before deciding she was far more interested in the structure and story of a good wine. So she spent a decade studying wine as a broker and distributor—eventually making it to the Advanced Sommelier level (an incredibly byzantine, difficult and rare knowledge of wine). Finally, she launched her own company, JC Select Wines, which specializes in hand-picking wines for special events and clients. We asked her to come in and share a few things: The top six wines we all have to try, and the story behind them. The biggest trends and myths about wine—explain them and debunk them, please. And so she does. Hilariously. “Wine gets a bad rap from the people who sniff a glass and say ‘this was grown by a river, and there were three, possibly four, golden retrievers on the property,” she says. JC Select connects people to niche, hand-picked wines. Her mission to source wines from sustainable, top-notch makers goes way beyond “is this great wine?” She makes it a point to get to know the winemakers and chooses wines from those whose story she believes in. She shares the creators' stories with her clients—focusing on organic, small batch, and environmentally responsible brands. “Part of the end product is how they got there,” she says. “So it's how the grapes are grown, how they're cultivated. You know, they don't want to grow a whole bunch of grapes just to produce more fruit. They want that fruit to be of high quality.” Point is: wine should be more than just wine. Every bottle is a gateway to a good, compelling story of the humans behind it. Even harder stories about equality, worker rights, misuse of land and people. And Jennifer's got stories. Speaking of sailing, JC Select Wines is hosting its annual Champagne Sail aboard the Adventuress Luxury Catamaran, which takes riders on an all-inclusive scenic three-hour sail around San Diego Bay. The outing, open from April to Oct., will be equipped with Charles Heidsieck Champagne (the Champagne served on the Titanic, “which sometimes I opt not to tell people since we're on a boat in the open water,” she says). To hear Jennifer's six must-have wines from her personal cellar, listen to this week's full episode of Happy Half Hour In the news, a third Fig Tree Cafe opened late Jan. in Mission Valley—the Rise and Shine Hospitality Group who also run Breakfast Republic bring in another fine dining experience to the growing neighborhood. Sister concepts Pop Pie Co. and Stella Jean's Ice Cream opened up in Pacific Beach, expanding their warm, friendly atmosphere and killer desserts further across San Diego. Both establishments provide the perfect sweet treat for a sunny SD winter. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” both of the hosts find themselves craving seafood. David visits New England-inspired Sea Tavern in the heart of North Park. A Surf N' Turf “Double Double” built with a smashed Wagyu patty, crab croquette, onion jam, and frico-style cheddar mozzarella make this meal one for the books. Troy's going back for the lobster and shrimp roll at urban office park restaurant Farmer & The Seahorse run by chef Sam Deckman. A great place to take the family and let the kids run wild. See y'all next week!

Lake San Marcos is such a mystery to me. Like if you took the water feature from a miniature golf course and expanded that over a couple miles—that's what it would be. A human-made oasis. Fake? You bet. Kinda magical? Also that. And that's the kind of hokey water hocus pocus I live for. I'm the kind of guy who thinks sequins is the height of American culture. This podcast we recorded live from the Mister A's of Lake San Marcos—Amalfi Cucina Italiana. Chef Marcello Avitabile is a six-time World Pizza Champion (read the review here). The four owners are all Italian, all friends who met while working at another one of the top Italian food spots in the city, Buona Forchetta (Avitabile was the longtime exec chef). It's the second stop on our Delicious IPA Tour with Stone Brewing. (Note: These have been great events where we gather and sip and taste, available to those of you who join our Insiders program… you should sign up). One of the first “Beer vs. Wine Dinners” I ever went to was hosted by Stone. Wine has always been hailed as the perfect beverage for food. Since its inception, Stone has seemed fixated on proving that craft beer paired as well, if not better, than wine. Early on, I was skeptical if not scoffing. I went to the dinner thinking “this is a gimmick but there is quality food and beer.” And, wow. Beer won the night. The 200-plus people there that night voted it in a landslide. And it wasn't close on my card, either. I was shocked. Being a nerd, I dug into the science of it, and turns out beer has so many more flavor compounds than wine (due to the increased number of ingredients—hops, malt, etc.) This isn't a slag against wine, which is a quality portion of my life. Just beverage facts. Anyway, point is. Stone Delicious IPA is what their brewers have been tinkering with all these years. Their perfect food pairing beer. They came to us and said, “Hey, let's do a tour to celebrate what we think is a pretty awesome achievement, and let's use it to highlight some local restaurants and cooks and indie businesses.” Easy sell. So this week we pair it with Avitabile's primavera pizza—marinated zucchini and red bell peppers and eggplant, buffalo mozzarella, EVOO, fresh basil, all baked and blistered in 60 seconds in their hell-hot pizza oven. It's a doozy, and the strong, lightly citrusy hops stand up the char on the crust, making it a perfect pair. We sit down and talk with the owners Giuseppe Annunziata and Emiliano Muslija about Amalfi, and why they're importing 90 percent of their ingredients from the Italian coast they're from. In the news, we're pretty jazzed about Azuki Sushi's new omakase spot; Breakfast Republic makes the move on expanding to other cities; discuss the bizarro ambition of space-portal alien tiki lounge Mothership in South Park, and Amalfi announces the opening of their second restaurant in North County. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” David raves about the Aleppo chicken at Callie; Emiliano points people to Akai Hana Sushi in Rancho Bernardo; Guiseppe expresses his desire to try the raved-about Sushi Tadokoro; and I am still a little floored by the ube pancakes at The Holding Company—where they've got an all-ages brunch on their rooftop overlooking the O.B. pier. It's an all-ages brunch, which is great because just because some of us chose to procreate doesn't mean we died. The podcast is fully back. Thanks for being patient as we moved offices over the summer. Full steam. See ya next week. –Troy

Welcome back! This week we chat with Tara Monsod, who recently took over as executive chef at Animae, the high-design Asian fusion restaurant owned by Brian Malarkey and Chris Puffer. Tara has also worked at Herringbone, Burlap, and at the acclaimed Osteria Mozza in her hometown of Los Angeles, and this is her first executive chef position. She recently changed Animae's menu, and several of the new dishes reflect her Filipino American heritage and the flavors she grew up eating. David and I checked out the new menu (and didn't invite Troy), and we recommend the scallop crudo with calamansi (a citrus fruit from the Philippines) and the beef short rib kare kare, made with a savory sauce of peanut oil and bagoong (shrimp paste). We chat about Tara's passion for cooking and have a bigger discussion about whether Filipino food is finally getting the recognition it deserves, especially in a city that has one of the largest Filipino American communities in the U.S. She also shares the biggest lessons she learned from the late chef Anthony Sinsay, who mentored several chefs in San Diego and helped put our Filipino food scene on the map. In Hot Plates, Ponto Lago opened in Carlsbad last week with a Baja-inspired menu of ceviche, a daily roast of different proteins, and even dishes prepared tableside. Chef Phillip Esteban, our 2020 Critic's Pick for Best Chef, opened the brick-and-mortar location for White Rice in Liberty Station last week. It serves silog, Filipino rice bowls topped with an egg. For Two People, $50, Tara recommends the hand-pulled biang biang noodles from Shanxi Magic Kitchen (which we featured on the cover of our June issue!). David visited the North Park Farmers' Market for Gourmet Tamales and hot sauces from Down to Ferment. Troy enjoyed his first brunch at Breakfast Republic, and Marie liked the carne asada torta from Roxy's Tacos. Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from our listeners. Hard Cider is Here to Stay: North Park’s Bivouac Ciderworks Rolls Out Cans

Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! Joining us in the studio today is Lara Worm, co-founder of Bivouac Ciderworks in North Park. We’ve mentioned Bivouac before on the show, and you’re probably familiar with the brand, but we share the big news that they just recently released their ciders in cans—including the popular San Diego Jam. You can buy the cider at BevMo, Jensen’s and Barron’s, and soon they’ll be available in Orange County. We learned that Lara has had an interesting career path before founding Bivouac: She was a federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C. In 2015 she moved back to San Diego and still worked as an attorney, but she was pitched the idea to start the brewery by her current business partner, Matt. Lara is now with Bivouac full-time, and the company just celebrated its second anniversary. In Hot Plates, we talked about the new brunch spin off of Breakfast Republic, Gaslamp Breakfast Company, opening on Sixth Avenue and J Street. Del Mar is getting a big food hall, called The Sky Deck at Del Mar Highlands, later this spring. A food truck in South Park, Shawarma Guys, were named the No. 1 place to eat in the country by Yelp. And Troy is still on the hunt for the best birria restaurant in San Diego! The Hot Topic is zero-proof distilled spirits, which ties in perfectly with “Dry January.” Several companies have come out lately with distilled "spirits" that they say taste just like vodka, gin, or even rum and whiskey, but have no alcohol. We're aware of two big brands that you might see in bars around town: Seedlip, a clear herbal tonic from the UK, and Lyre's, a line of alcohol-free spirits from Australia. Sycamore Den in Normal Heights carries Lyre’s, and we wrote about this trend in the current issue of San Diego Magazine. For Two People, $50, Troy picked Carnitas Las Michoacánas. Lauren liked Vina Carta Wine Shop and Bar, with sandwiches from Mona Lisa Italian Foods, and Lara selected Olympic Café. We want to hear from our listeners! Do you have a question for Troy about what it's like to be a restaurant critic? Need a restaurant recommendation? Is there a guest you want us to book on the show? Let us know! Welcome back! We hit the jackpot this week on Happy Half Hour as we tape from our sponsor, Sycuan Casino Resort, specifically in the restaurant Bull & Bourbon. Marcel, the sous chef of the steakhouse, hopped on to tell us about the 75 internationally-sourced rare bourbons that complement the steaks and seafood. This week was all about barbecue, and our special guest, Andy Harris, knows just about everything there is to know. He’s the owner of Grand Ole BBQ & Asado in North Park, and he recently opened a second location in Flinn Springs, which is near our recording location by El Cajon. Andy's BBQ joint is this year's Critic's Pick for Best of the Best Casual Restaurant in our annual Best Restaurants list, and was recently featured on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" on the Food Network. Andy shared how he switched from working in the music industry to becoming a BBQ expert, and he gave a shout out to Himalayan Cuisine in La Mesa for his Two People, $50. As for our hosts, the veggie burger at Station Tavern and Chiko in Encinitas were this week’s standouts. Things were looking real sweet in Hot Plates this week as we welcomed a new Donut Bar location in Chula Vista. Pacific Beach got a new Argentinian Cafe on Garnet Avenue: Yerba Mate Bar & Empanadas, and Breakfast Republic continues its city-wide domination of the breakfast/brunch scene with the opening of its 9th location, this latest one in Mission Valley. Last but not least, family-owned restaurant Bahn Thai is expanding to Hillcrest. We’re talking about Del Taco as far as Hot Topics go. The fast-food company started selling tacos with Beyond Meat in April, and they just revealed they've already sold two million fake-meat tacos. It's the best-selling new product in the company's history. Thanks for listening, and we’d love to hear from you! Call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a message. Or if you’re too shy to call, you can email HappyHalfHour@sdmag.com. We’ve got another exciting Happy Half Hour episode for you! This week, we’re recording from our sponsor, 10 Barrel Brewing. We got to speak with brewer Ben Shirley who recommended the creamy and crisp Frosty Mug or the most popular IPA, Cali Love. Our special guest this week is Jojo Ruiz, the head chef at the new Serea seafood restaurant at the Hotel Del Coronado. Serea is the iconic resort's new oceanfront eatery that replaced 1500 Ocean, and Chef Jojo, who opened Lionfish and also worked at Ironside, has created a "sea-to-table" menu of sustainable seafood sourced from local fishermen. Jojo explained how San Diego is at the forefront of the sea-to-table movement, and he thinks that the mackerel fish and the Soupfin shark are underrated in the culinary world. His pick for Two People, $50 is Cantina Mayahuel, and the staff suggested Phuong Trang and Shank & Bone for pho, Il Dandy, and brunch at Fort Oak. In Hot Plates, the owner of the popular Breakfast Republic chain opened a new brunch spot in North Park, North Park Breakfast Company, to help alleviate the crowds at Breakfast Republic. The Guild Hotel downtown just opened with a new restaurant, Luca, with Chef Justin Vaiciunas from Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen” leading the kitchen. Lastly, there’s a new happy hour in town! Wayfarer Bread in Bird Rock just launched a summertime happy hour on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and will include a changing menu with various crudités, dips, and a local brewery or winery. This week's Hot Topic is about a polarizing beverage: LaCroix sparkling water. CNN said the brand's popularity with Millennials is fizzing out, and sales of the lightly flavored, fizzy beverage are "in freefall." As Americans drink more seltzer than ever before (sales of the beverage have doubled in the past five years), there's lots of competition now, especially for the boozy kind. Nevertheless, Jojo still prefers a LaCroix over a beer after a long day at work. It’s not too late to join us for our live taping of Happy Half Hour at Eppig Brewing’s Waterfront Biergarten next week, July 8, at 3 p.m. We will be sampling the first of three collaboration beers we are doing with Eppig, Fall, and Coronado brewing in celebration of our Best of San Diego issue. There is no charge to come down, but there will be discounts for everyone in our Insider’s Program. We hope to see you there!

Not only that, having kids changes us even more. I don't really know what my opinion would be if I was 42 with no kids. I do know that if I was 28 I would be frustrated about all of this. The point that I am trying to get to is that now having kids, even with the guy apologising, I would be very uncomfortable if I learned that he and my children were in the same room. Then I thought to myself, what about my friend with kids and my friends without kids? What do they think about it? I can tell you the the opinion of my friends without kids varied and most of them said: I don't know what to think of this; maybe it was an overreaction. “ Carrie P writes in “I finished listening to your episode on the firing of James Gunn. I have been a podcast subscriber for a couple of months and enjoy and respect everyone's opinions.  I will play devil's advocate you sometimes do. I have been in education for 14 years and there is a federal push for teaching digital citizenship. We are doing our best to educate our students that the footprint they leave on social media can have a huge effect on their future. A lot of teenagers are fans of Marvel and James Gunn. This might be a good learning experience for them to see how comments they have made in the past can keep them from potential jobs and future successes.” L from Texas writes in: “I just thought I would share some thoughts on your discussion of cleaning up after yourself in a theater. I worked in a theater for 6 years most of that time I spent as an usher. At the chain I worked at we were cross trained but each shift we were in a specific area so if you were working an usher shift you were an usher and the same goes for Box Office, Concessions and Booth.  The chain I worked at had a system for cleaning theaters, on the busy nights and days, which was called the ten step system in which if you have at least five usher working to clean a theater it would go like this.  1 - Gather all supplies 2- Turn on cleaning lights  3-2 ushers go to the top of the theater and alternate rows picking up any "big trash" your popcorn bags food containers drinks basically anything big enough to pick up and throw in the trash  4 - Clean any wet or stick spills - The big trash users would let one of the other users know that there was a need for a mop and then it would be cleaned 5- once the 2 ushers for step 3 are about 5 rows down 1 or 2 ushers with a large push broom will go down each row and get all the popcorn and other debris from under and in front of the seats  6 - 2 ushers will go down each side and sweep up the piles left by the #4 ushers and also spot check to make sure there is nothing left in the rows 7 - wipe down any seats that need it and return them to the correct position 8 - Vacuum any carpet that needs vacuuming ( we usually just had hand powered vacuums 9 - Empty the trash cans outside the theater  10 - Cleaning lights off and inform the podium the theater is ready to seat I know this was long but all this to say that if everyone would just take what ushers would consider "big trash" out with them we could eliminate an entire step here and theaters would get cleaned faster.  I will say that there is a lot of down time for ushers when it is not busy or theaters are not that busy but having been a manager as well I know that there is always something that an usher can be doing to keep the theater clean and organized and the managers can always find something for them to do while they are on the clock. So don't worry about someone losing their job just because you took you popcorn bag out to the trash!”   At The Water Cooler: What we've been Doing:Chris traveled to see Seals at a La Jolla Cove in San Diego Jacob visited the San Diego Zoo and did some Comic-Con shopping. In need of some inspiration? Check out Johan Engman. Todays episode is littered with gems of advice like, "If you're determined to do something go with you gut feeling." For more gems like this, crush the play button.  Engman arrived to the United States when he was 16 and got his start working in the restaurant industry as a dish washer in a small Italian restaurant. He moved on to bussing tables at Embassy Suites before working as a server at a number of local restaurants. Just working in restaurants wasn't enough, he wanted to be an owner. In 2008 Engman opened The Fig Tree Café. Seven years later, Engman now oversees operations and owns three successful branches of Fig Tree Café along with Café Cantata and his newest venture Breakfast Republic.
