Last night I attended the Poway City Council meeting. I have lots to talk about including Poway banning homeless encampments, the replacement of Barry Leonard, money in politics, and Life Time Fitness at The Farm. Plus, we discuss Archie Moore, San Diego Roads, Steve Garvey for CA Senate, Ed Franklin, and more. We will take your comments and questions in the San Diego Community Forum. It's Wednesday June 7, 2023. Here's what John Riley thinks: Poway City Council Observations I hadn't been to a city council meeting in a while. It was great hearing some of the issues hashed out by both public speakers and elected officials. As a podcaster, it was special meeting some folks that listen or watch my show. Nice to make those human connections. Poway chooses to replace Barry Leonard with an Appointment/Election Hybrid Poway has a history of appointing people to council to fill out a person's term. I figured this was the route they would take in replacing resigning councilmember Barry Leonard. The public was overwhelmingly for an election. Steve Vaus proposed a hybrid model. They will appoint someone with a pledge they will not run in the November 2024 election. Money in Poway Politics California's new SB1439 bill requires that elected officials recuse themselves from voting on issues that involve a donor that gave over $250. But $250 is the campaign donation limit for Poway. Does that mean SB1439 is moot in Poway? Or do indirect funds to PACs and non-profits count too? Life Time Fitness Update at The Farm in Poway The Poway City Council says they cannot do anything since there is no formal proposal before them. That's true. But locals know the developer's plan is to put in a Life Time Fitness center that likely violates the voter's will with Measure P. Mayor Vaus says there is a lot of misinformation swirling in social media. Is JRP part of the problem? LOL Poway Bans Homeless Encampments San Diego implemented a rule that authorities can remove homeless encampments if there is a shelter bed nearby. Now Poway has enacted a similar rule. After all, the San Diego homeless could end up in Poway. Archie Moore, Any Body Can Youth Foundation What a great fundraiser hosted by the ABC Youth Foundation for troubled youth. I attended a very well run and safe youth boxing match at St. Augustine High School. Bravo to the athletes, families and organizers that made this event possible. San Diego Finally Repairing Roads in Rancho Bernardo, Westwood The Witch Creek Fire was in 2007 but the damage to the roads has still not been resolved. The reconstruction has been over for some time, but then authorities had trouble coming up with the $5M to fund this project in the Westwood community of Rancho Bernardo. Why is it so hard to get local government officials to focus on their primary tasks? Steve Garvey for CA Senate? Former Dodger and Padre, Steve Garvey, is flirting with the idea of running for US Senate as a Republican. After his career ended in 1987, he considered running for senate, but his flirting with extramarital affairs derailed his political future. These days that's no longer a disqualifier. San Diego News Update May 24: Carlsbad Gay Pride, Jim Desmond, Rancho Bernardo, Lemon Grove, Santee

John Riley Project

We have a laundry list of topics to discuss in this John Riley Project episode. We will discuss the controversial vote in Carlsbad to ban flags, including the Gay Pride Flag. La Mesa tried this as well and got a different result. Carlsbad went a step further and banned prayer too. We'll also discuss San Diego Supervisor Jim Desmond, homelessness, housing subsidies, Rancho Bernardo sink hole, tattoos in Santee and cannabis in Lemon Grove. It's Wednesday May 24, 2023. Here's what John Riley thinks: The City of Carlsbad is Banning Gay Pride Flag on City Buildings The LGBTQ community is upset that the Gay Pride Flag cannot be presented on city buildings in Carlsbad. But what is the role of local government? Does the American flag already protect gay rights in the first place? No doubt this flies in the face of the woke agenda, but I think we should support equal rights for all, not special rights for this group and that group. Carlsbad Bans Prayer at City Meetings Why do some cities have invocations to start a city meeting? Is this a violation of the separation of church and state? While we're at it, why do they pledge allegiance to the flag before a meeting? I like this move by Carlsbad. San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond and Homelessness The County of San Diego wants to buy more hotels to house the homeless. After all, it's free money from Sacramento! Is this the solution to homelessness or are they just sweeping them under the rug? There are still mental health and addiction issues that need to be addressed. Tax the Rich to Subsidize San Diego Housing The idea is to tax large businesses on their payroll for employees earning $150,000+ per year. The money would go into a fund to subsidize housing for others. Would this solve the housing problem or just make matters worse? Taxing payroll will just increase demand when there is already not enough supply. It's not a solution. San Diego Housing Prices Continue to Increase Despite higher interest rates, housing prices are still going up. It's because there are not enough houses for sale. Until they start building more, we will continue to have a housing crisis making it really tough for first time home buyers. Rancho Bernardo Sink Hole There's a huge hole on Escala Drive in Rancho Bernardo. Why is it so hard to get this fixed quickly? The City of San Diego is trying to get emergency approval and pass environmental regulations. It's going to take over 2 months to fix it if we're lucky. Santee Allows More Tattoo Parlors Microblading is a hot trend to enhance eyebrows. The technique is like tattoos, and this is causing Santee to deregulate the rules in their city. Will this attract a bad element? Or is this just people pursuing their happiness? Lemon Grove Allows More Cannabis Dispensaries It's still illegal in El Cajon, but Lemon Grove is opening their economy for more cannabis dispensaries. But Lemon Grove has a serious revenue problem for their city coffers. Is this a move to free up their economy or just generate more tax dollars for the city? Looks like both. #lamesa #gaypride #LGBTQ #prayer #1A #carlsbad #SanDiego #homelessness #homeless #housingfirst #jimdesmond #ranchobernardo #lemongrove #santee #cannabis #tattoo #kusi #termlimits #TheFarm #LifetimeFitness JRP0320 Relevant Links: Carlsbad Bans Gay Pride Flag: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/communities/north-county/carlsbad/story/2023-05-23/proposal-to-display-commemorative-flags-including-pride-flag-fails-in-carlsbad https://timesofsandiego.com/politics/2023/05/23/la-mesa-councilwomans-flag-ban-idea-shredded-by-pro-lgbtq-speakers-dies/ Carlsbad Bans Prayer at City Council Meetings https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/communities/north-county/carlsbad/story/2023-05-17/no-more-prayers-for-carlsbad-city-council Jim Desmond: Housing First Objection to Solve Homelessness https://www.sandiegouniontribune.

John Riley Project

SDGE wants to base their electricity prices on your personal income. How can they do that? Meanwhile, mass transit in CA is facing a huge fiscal cliff as ridership is way down and COVID relief money is drying up. It's as if all rationality has left the discussion in the economy. It's about feelings rather than reason. It's Wednesday, April 12, 2023. Here's what John Riley thinks: SDGE electricity rates based on your income level. SDGE plans to create a flat rate based on your income level, but with a lower variable rate based on usage. The plan is to offer income relief for low-income people and save money for big energy users. Wait, what? I thought they wanted us to conserve. I think it's a scheme to generate more revenue in response to the vast number of customers that are signing up for solar energy. California Mass Transit – Fiscal Cliff! Is mass transit the right long-term answer for California? Ridership numbers are down and govt subsidies are drying up. How are they going to pay for this? Colorado River Water Rationing coming soon. If the states can't work out an agreement, then the federal government will step in and decide for them. There's not enough water coming down the Colorado River to satisfy a growing population. Conservation isn't the answer. Humans need to manufacture, recycle, capture, and store their drinking water. La Mesa Vice Mayor Colin Parent running for State Assembly More fall out from the Nathan Fletcher scandal. Politicians are shifting and capitalizing on opportunities. Now Colin Parent announces a run for State Assembly. Parent is an advocate for mass transit, affordable housing, and safe, walkable neighborhoods. County of San Diego provides “surplus property” for the Homeless If you really think about it, homelessness is the result of government policies that limit housing growth, prevent high rises, and prevent evictions. And don't get me started on PTSD caused by politicians sending American troops into immoral wars. In a refreshing change, here is a short term solution to help get homeless people off the streets and into safe accommodations. These are govt buildings that are no longer used. UCSD and SDSU Students protest banning homeless encampments. Mustard Seed Project students are advocating for humane solutions to help the homeless. But are their feel-good ideas preventing us from getting to a solution? UCSD Chancellor gets $500,000 raise. Pradeep Khosla was considering a higher paying university job elsewhere, so the UC Board of Regents stepped up to give him a $500,000 raise to keep him. The money is coming from wealthy donors that want to see his leadership continue at UC San Diego. Palomar Health Nurses to get a $100,000 retention bonus. Looking for a secure job with good pay and benefits? Consider nursing. There is a bidding war for nurses in San Diego as Kaiser Permanente prepares to open a new hospital in San Marcos. Palomar Health is fighting hard to prevent their nurses from jumping ship. Low Riders Rejoice! Cruising ban lifted in National City National City passed legislation to make cruising legal again. The Low Rider community is overjoyed as they can celebrate art, culture, and family in their community. This is the United States of America. How can life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness be illegal in the first place? Poway School Bond already cost us $1 Billion. In a Letter to the Editor at Pomerado News, Poway resident calls out Marian Kim-Phelps' plan for a school bond when we haven't even started paying for the last Billion Dollar Bond. Rancho Bernardo is getting a Cannabis Dispensary Despite local objections, the San Diego Planning Commission is allowing the Urbn Leaf cannabis dispensary to open in Rancho Bernardo. Is this going to “bring the wrong element” to RB? Or is this a legitimate business that sells medicine that offers people pain relief? San Diego Pothole Robot Survey

The Good: Aztecs in March Madness. The Bad: Nathan Fletcher, homelessness, San Diego schools declining, Poway Unified schools deteriorating, La Mesa dysfunction, Rancho Bernardo residents upset over cannabis. What is going on in San Diego? It's Wednesday, April 5, 2023. Here's what John Riley thinks: Aztecs make San Diego Proud So much love for the San Diego State men's basketball team as they make the March Madness finals, but lose to UConn. Can you feel the energy in San Diego around this team? Feels really good. Nathan Fletcher Needs to Resign Now Last week I praised Nathan Fletcher for seeking mental health help. But now the other shoe dropped, and we see a serious sexual harassment mess. Fletcher is a disgrace. But why is he postponing his resignation until May 15th? How will he be replaced on the San Diego Board of Supervisors. Homelessness Politicized by GOP CA State Senator Brian Jones understands that homelessness is a key issue for voters. Jones is proposing a plan to clear out homeless encampments near schools, parks and churches. Is this a good plan? Where will these people go? Poway Unified School District Preparing for a School Bond In a recent op-ed, PUSD superintendent Marian Kim-Phelps made the case that school facilities are crumbling. They need more funding to upgrade and repair their infrastructure. Phelps is making the case for a future school bond funded by taxpayers. This would be on top of payments for the Billion Dollar Bond. Can PUSD self-finance their plan? I think so. San Diego Schools, Poway Unified Enrollment Declining Interesting data as less students are attending San Diego schools. It's due to a number of factors including a transition to homeschooling and private schools, families moving out of state due to high cost of living, and some upset with the politicization of curriculum. Less students = less funding. What can public schools do to attract more students? La Mesa Permitting and Signage Dysfunction The City of La Mesa is struggling to process building permits to allow businesses to start and homeowners to install granny flats. This is frustrating residents and local politicians are demanding change. Meanwhile, La Mesa is considering LED electronic signage, but locals are upset about “visual pollution.” San Diego Community Forum We take comments and questions from our livestream audience as well as YouTube comments. Shirts and hats are flying off the shelves as San Diego gets ready for a big sports weekend. The San Diego State Aztecs made their first Final Four and are only 2 wins away from a national championship. We discuss mental health, selfishness (the good kind), and pursuing win-win outcomes. Homelessness in San Diego is Expanding New data shows more people are becoming homeless than are finding homes. Pete Neild joined me to cover a wide range of topic in this San Diego News Update podcast episode. We cover Poway/Rancho Bernardo issues, San Diego regional news, Joe Biden's visit to San Diego, and US foreign policy issues with China and Russia. Poway Cronyism We saw so much money flowing into Poway's November election. Turns out that one of the main people behind one of the most influential Political Action Committees ends up getting appointed by Mayor Vaus to a city committee. Rancho Bernardo Roads Pete Neild enjoys driving his Corvette Calypso all over San Diego. He can vouch that Ted Williams Parkway and Carmel Mountain Road are a mess. Pete also thinks the Poway roads are not as good as some people think. Blacks Beach Immigration Tragedy Pete and John comment on the tragic loss of 8 lives as immigrants attempt to land at Black's Beach in La Jolla. This invites discussion of immigration and Friendship Park in Imperial Beach. Silicon Valley Bank's Mess is impacting people in San Diego We breakdown the Silicon Valley Bank cluster, wonder how the FDIC is covering it all, and comment how the mess is affecting people in San Diego. President Biden's Visit to San Diego Joe Biden's recent trip to San Diego was quite the spectacle. Air Force One lands at North Island and then Osprey's take POTUS to the Del Mar Polo Fields to meet with foreign leaders. The Biden visit closed down airspace for a time and caused the San Diego State Aztecs plane to be late for their March Madness trip to Orlando FL. Nuclear Submarine Agreement: USA, UK, Australia (AUSUK) Pete is a submarine veteran so we had some interesting discussion of the nuclear powered submarine deal between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This led to further discussion of keeping the peace in the South China Sea and the trade routes from East Asia to the Indian Ocean. Ukraine Russia War There was plenty to comment about the conflict in Eastern Europe. Pete spent time in the Black Sea area when he served in the military. We also discuss the “don't get involved” crowd as it relates to this conflict and America's entry into WW2. #poway #ranchobernnardo #blacksbeach #svb #delmar #ausuk #ukraine JRP0312 Pete Neild Info: Pete's Corvette C7 Calypso: https://www.calypso-c74pjn.com/ Pete's Sea Stories Project: https://www.seestories.online/ Thank you to our livestream participants in the Community Forum. SANDAG Mileage Tax, Climate and Housing Clash in Mira Mesa

John Riley Project

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 23, 2023 113:03

San Diego County leaders are pushing for major changes in our region. Look in the crystal ball and we can see plans for more housing, more trolleys, more busses, more people, and now a per mile mileage tax. Can San Diego accommodate more growth? What do think of their plans to make this happen? It is Wednesday, February 22nd. Here is a roundup of news stories in and around San Diego County. Here is what John Riley thinks: Is SANDAG's Mileage Tax moral or practical? This mileage tax proposed by SANDAG is causing plenty of discussion for San Diegans. We are already paying property taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes and income taxes to fund roads, highways and freeways. Now they want to add another tax. Didn't SANDAG pass the TRANSNET sales tax increase decades ago to fund this? How are they going to charge per mile? Seems like we will either have GPS devices tracking our driving patterns and this raises valid concerns about privacy. Their plan is already charging a grandma in Rancho Bernardo a sales tax increase so a student from a rich family can take the trolley to college at a low price. Is that moral? Are trains and subways the right vision for the future? Or will self-driving electric vehicles offer a better solution that can function as individualized pods that get you right to your destination while also working in a swarm like mass transit? Climate change activists are suing to stop Mira Mesa's long-term housing plan Mira Mesa recently announced a 30-year growth plan and Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation, or CERF, is suing the City of San Diego because the plan does not match up with their climate plan for carbon emission reduction. Now climate goals and housing goals are stalled while lawyers sort this out. Are these groups counter productively harming their own interests? Will the GOP kill Social Security? Social Security has been in the news since the State of the Union address when President Biden accused the Republicans of wanting to slash Social Security spending. Sure, there are a few Republicans that want to do this, but do you think the GOP has the cajónes to actually do it? Is it in the GOP's best interest to cut spending for their senior citizen voter base? We break down the controversy and discuss the morality and mechanics of Social Security. Lake San Marcos is such a mystery to me. Like if you took the water feature from a miniature golf course and expanded that over a couple miles—that's what it would be. A human-made oasis. Fake? You bet. Kinda magical? Also that. And that's the kind of hokey water hocus pocus I live for. I'm the kind of guy who thinks sequins is the height of American culture. This podcast we recorded live from the Mister A's of Lake San Marcos—Amalfi Cucina Italiana. Chef Marcello Avitabile is a six-time World Pizza Champion (read the review here). The four owners are all Italian, all friends who met while working at another one of the top Italian food spots in the city, Buona Forchetta (Avitabile was the longtime exec chef). It's the second stop on our Delicious IPA Tour with Stone Brewing. (Note: These have been great events where we gather and sip and taste, available to those of you who join our Insiders program… you should sign up). One of the first “Beer vs. Wine Dinners” I ever went to was hosted by Stone. Wine has always been hailed as the perfect beverage for food. Since its inception, Stone has seemed fixated on proving that craft beer paired as well, if not better, than wine. Early on, I was skeptical if not scoffing. I went to the dinner thinking “this is a gimmick but there is quality food and beer.” And, wow. Beer won the night. The 200-plus people there that night voted it in a landslide. And it wasn't close on my card, either. I was shocked. Being a nerd, I dug into the science of it, and turns out beer has so many more flavor compounds than wine (due to the increased number of ingredients—hops, malt, etc.) This isn't a slag against wine, which is a quality portion of my life. Just beverage facts. Anyway, point is. Stone Delicious IPA is what their brewers have been tinkering with all these years. Their perfect food pairing beer. They came to us and said, “Hey, let's do a tour to celebrate what we think is a pretty awesome achievement, and let's use it to highlight some local restaurants and cooks and indie businesses.” Easy sell. So this week we pair it with Avitabile's primavera pizza—marinated zucchini and red bell peppers and eggplant, buffalo mozzarella, EVOO, fresh basil, all baked and blistered in 60 seconds in their hell-hot pizza oven. It's a doozy, and the strong, lightly citrusy hops stand up the char on the crust, making it a perfect pair. We sit down and talk with the owners Giuseppe Annunziata and Emiliano Muslija about Amalfi, and why they're importing 90 percent of their ingredients from the Italian coast they're from. In the news, we're pretty jazzed about Azuki Sushi's new omakase spot; Breakfast Republic makes the move on expanding to other cities; discuss the bizarro ambition of space-portal alien tiki lounge Mothership in South Park, and Amalfi announces the opening of their second restaurant in North County. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” David raves about the Aleppo chicken at Callie; Emiliano points people to Akai Hana Sushi in Rancho Bernardo; Guiseppe expresses his desire to try the raved-about Sushi Tadokoro; and I am still a little floored by the ube pancakes at The Holding Company—where they've got an all-ages brunch on their rooftop overlooking the O.B. pier. It's an all-ages brunch, which is great because just because some of us chose to procreate doesn't mean we died. The podcast is fully back. Thanks for being patient as we moved offices over the summer. Full steam. See ya next week. –Troy

Terry Norwood joined me yesterday afternoon for pleasant conversation about her campaign for Poway School Board in Area C (mostly Rancho Bernardo).  Terry has carved out a unique position in her race.  She is the only challenger running against two incumbents.  She is the only woman on the ballot.  She is the only Rancho Bernardo resident in the race for a district that is primarily about representing Rancho Bernardo's interests. Terry Norwood has spent a great deal of her time as an active member in her community.  She served as PTA President at Rancho Bernardo High School.  She spent numerous years working on the Rancho Bernardo Grad Night event including one year as Committee Chair.  She has served on the school site council at RB High.  She serves on the Palomar PTA Council (the umbrella PTA organization for all of PUSD).  She has served on the Rancho Bernardo Planning Commission and as a board member on the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation.  Plus she has great experience serving in organizations that support local military families.  Her progression to become a candidate for school board is simply the next logical step in her journey to serve her community. Terry Norwood prides herself on out-of-the-box thinking looking for creative ways to bring new resources to help students in the classroom.  She sees a great need for an active CTE (Career Technical Education) program (aka vocational education) to supplement the traditional college track courses in high school.  We discussed the unique vocational programs available at various high schools that are simply under publicized and thus not offering the full potential of value for students in the area.  She sees opportunities to bring in local businesses to offer internships, to coordinate resources to help students in specialized programs (i.e. robotics) and to offer training at school sites.  While she will lobby Sacramento for more educational funding from the state budget, she wants to also maximize revenue sources available in our own backyard. We discussed her background growing up in Bell County Texas, living abroad in Sicily and on the western outpost of America along the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.  This broad experience with different cultures and lifestyles gives Terry the ability to better empathize with the unique needs of students, teachers, parents, administrators and taxpayers of various backgrounds. Her race offered up many fascinating topics of discussion.  She may be one of the few candidates in America that is facing off against TWO incumbents in the same race.  Because of the challenging 3-2 majority dynamic on the board with her two opponents often on opposite sides of many key issues, this may open up a 4-lane highway down the center as she works to win the race.  Terry hopes to capitalize on this anti-incumbency feeling amongst the electorate. I was particularly intrigued with her ideas to provide visual and performing arts not simply as a separate and distinct school program, but instead as an integrated and money-saving program that helps reinforce lessons in history, social science, literature and other disciplines (including special events like Grad Night).  She strongly believes that different students learn differently, so different methods of teaching must be available (textbook, learning-by-doing, creative presentations, etc.).  We also spoke about her learnings as a mother of a special needs student and how she can help PUSD with special needs education.  Finally we also touched on the lack of long term planning at PUSD particularly with financial and safety matters. But that wasn't all we addressed in this 2-hour discussion.  I invite you to listen and watch as we covered other issues including Rancho Bernardo High School Principal David LeMaster, US Army, US Navy, basketball, tennis, strategies on breaking the 3-2 majority dynamic, how she will work together with other board members and provide stability,
