How does secondary traumatic stress (STS) affect eating disorder providers, and how can we care for ourselves without bypassing the realities of burnout, exhaustion, and systemic overwhelm? Dr. Marianne sits down with Dr. Danielle Hiestand, LMFT (@drdaniellehiestand), to unpack the intersection of STS, vicarious trauma, burnout, and disordered eating in helping professionals. Whether you're a therapist, dietitian, coach, or caregiver working in high-empathy roles, this episode explores how chronic exposure to others' pain can show up somatically, emotionally, and in our relationships with food and body. Dr. Hiestand shares research insights and lived-experience wisdom on setting sustainable boundaries, navigating ethical self-care, and creating healing spaces that also protect the healer.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 257 Welcome MONUMENT to the series! Let's get a. Deeper look into this talented artist behind the mix with a short interview. How long have you been DJing? About 2 years Why did you get into it? I've been playing music and producing electronic music for many years, but only went to my first rave about 3 years ago and absolutely got hooked on house and techno. What events have you played? Pride and other events with Auntie E, RENDEZVOUS with 98 ROMANTIQUE, Daisy Chain Halloween with STICKSNSTONES and 98 Romantique, various other deep woods raves and parties around the Pacific Northwest. Where do you live (generally)? The Mission Valley, MT Where are you from originally? Born and raised here in MT, though i've lived all over. What inspires you to DJ? Nothing feels more beautiful to me than a room full of people dancing as hard as they possibly can- I jump at any chance i can find to contribute to what i think is a genuine biological, emotional, social, spiritual necessity. My goal in my sets is to get people out of their heads and into their emotional and physical bodies- to that end i tend to play fairly ecstatic, positive stuff most of time. What inspires you about electronic music culture? While every scene has its flaws, i do find EDM to be maximally inclusive, positive, and generative. What genres are in your mix? I'm not huge on knowing/understanding genre- what i know i respond to most are the torchy vocals of house, drums with a lot of low end and clatter, the textures of acid house, afrobeat, cumbia, baile funk, chicago and detroit house, and propulsive beats. Everything is permitted. A few words about your mix? This mix is basically a distillation of everything i've absorbed in the last year or so- still so much to discover and be inspired by! Who are some of the artists in your mix? Kerri Chandler, Dam Swindle, Leon Vynehall, Cinthie, bress underground, Voyeur For more MONUMENT check out https://soundcloud.com/jahsafe

Whether you're curious or already a fan of these approaches, this episode is packed with mind-blowing insights, practical takeaways, and a dash of nerdy neuroscience fun. HEAR FROM DANIELLE ABOUT DANIELLE! I have been passionate about learning and helping others most of my life. I am originally from Northern California and was overjoyed to study at University of California, San Diego and to live near the ocean. After receiving my Bachelors of Science in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience and Psychology I stayed in San Diego to complete my doctorate in Marital and Family Therapy at Alliant International University and become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #48529). While at college, I took a course on eating disorders and began to volunteer with a program that focused on eating disorder prevention. I knew I wanted to be a therapist and help people heal and recover from their eating disorders. I planted my roots in San Diego and began working at an eating disorder treatment program. It was clear early on that most of my clients had a trauma history. Some had never called what they went through “trauma,” but could see how their life experiences had contributed to the development of their eating disorder. Others knew they had gone through something that still bothered them in the present, but didn't know how to talk about it or how to heal. During this time I acquired extensive experience treating anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, complex PTSD, dissociative disorders, depression, and anxiety. I also began my training in EMDR therapy; a treatment that has become crucial to my therapeutic approach. To help clients on their journey toward healing I also utilize systems theory, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness. My overall goal is to work collaboratively with clients in order to honor their treatment goals. In 2013 Kelly Hinds, RDN and I created Savor Podcast. For three years we recorded episodes on nutrition, body image, mindfulness, yoga, eating disorders, dieting, EMDR therapy and beyond. Past Savor podcast episodes are available here. Before starting my family, I was an adjunct professor at University of California, San Diego, Alliant International University and San Diego State University. I taught classes on eating disorders, stress management, social psychology, and assessment. After my family started to grow, I decided to slow down and work part-time in my Mission Valley private practice in San Diego, California. I work toward providing a calm, safe and grounded space for you to feel comfortable sharing your successes and your struggles. A journey back to self always has ups, downs and surprises. Together we can navigate how to find tools and strategies to help you cope and make space for yourself. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband and two daughters. I also love swimming, paddle boarding, and hiking. In this episode of Perspectives Pastors Podcast, Rev. Trudy and Rev. Brittany continue talking about Our Money Story – examining how to bring God into our money habits and attitudes, that we may live more fully and with less worry. The two clergy women are focusing on Matthew 19:16-22, when Jesus observes how people give money in the temple – highlighting the great sacrifice given by a poor widow who gave everything she had, which was proportionately so much more than anyone else present. We often interpret this Scripture through a single lens. But Rev. Trudy and Rev. Brittnay question if Jesus was trying to bring more to light, reimagining our entire attitudes around: Why and how we give to the Church The importance of boundaries – even when (or especially when) it comes to giving How we take care of the vulnerable people in our community Bringing spirituality back to our act of giving It’s a lot to consider! If you’d like to explore this topic even deeper, we invite you to join an Our Money Story discussion group. We have groups meeting in person in the Mission Valley neighborhood of San Diego, as well as online. We also invite you to consider the following questions: Why do you give? What do you think Jesus observes as you give? What does giving do for you? Has your giving changed you, like it did the widow, from hopeless to hopeful?

In this episode of Perspectives Pastors Podcast, Rev. Brittany and Rev. Hannah continue the discussion about Our Money Story – this time in relation to the concept of “release.” They start with Scripture – Matthew 19:16-22 – the story of the young affluent man who approaches Jesus to learn what he must do to gain eternal life but ultimately walks away sad because he’s not willing to release his possessions. It’s an inward approach, looking at personal salvation, instead of the outward relationship with God and others. The concept of release is one that’s hard for us today – both with our personal possessions as well as the resources and approach of our churches. Rev. Brittany and Hannah discuss all this, as well as the error that comes with prescriptive faith, the blessings that can come about when we shift to a communal mindset, and the need to be inconvenienced to grow our faith. If you’d like to explore this topic even deeper, we invite you to join an Our Money Story discussion group. We have groups meeting in person in the Mission Valley neighborhood of San Diego, as well as online. We also invite you to consider the following questions: Has there been a time in your life when you let go of something with significant meaning to you? What did that experience feel like? What did it teach you? Do you agree with Jesus in this text that you have to sell all of your possessions to gain eternal life? What is Jesus asking you to give up that would make an impact on the lives of others?

In this episode of Perspectives FUMCSD Pastors Podcast, Rev. Trudy and Rev. Hannah are taking another look at the early church, as outlined by Acts of the Apostles, diving into the concept of radical generosity and living in true community. It was a big week for things that used to be things. The Republican Party of San Diego County, once a local political juggernaut, lost its chairwoman after an internal battle over Carl DeMaio, who is running for state Assembly against Andrew Hayes. Despite DeMaio's efforts to drag a Democrat to the runoff, he will face Hayes, a fellow Republican. This week, we discuss the endorsement battle that threatened to splinter an already weak political faction — and ultimately led to the emergence of a new party leader. Plus: Students learning online are performing way worse than their in-person peers. SDSU isn't interested in a Mission Valley arena. Voice of San Diego's Scott Lewis discussed the latest buzz around the redevelopment of the Sports Arena site and what it means for SDSU's vision of an arena at the Mission Valley site.

A huge crowd gathered at UC San Diego Wednesday afternoon to call for a cease-fire in Gaza. In other news, the federal government is tightening the standards for acceptable amounts of soot pollution in the air, and the rules could push San Diego out of compliance with clean air laws. Plus, San Diego State University had a special ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday, to officially open its new River Park in Mission Valley.
I think it's fair to claim that this week's Happy Half Hour guest is the most special visitor we've ever had on the podcast (which is saying something): Jason Mraz, the two-time Grammy Award–winning singer and songwriter who has gone platinum and multi-platinum in more than 20 countries. His tune “I'm Yours” also surpassed one billion streams on Spotify and was the most-streamed song by a solo artist in the naughts. His eighth album, Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride, dropped last June. In other words, he's kind of a big deal. Mraz lives in North County's greater Fallbrook area, where he runs Mraz Family Farms, providing companies like Chipotle with a steady stream of San Diego County–grown avocados (and providing this podcast with great talking points). In addition to chatting about his coffee farm and avocado-growing prowess, Mraz shines a light on his upcoming Kaleidoscope community concert, which will take place at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, on Saturday, February 17 at 7 p.m and on Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets will be available via JasonMraz.com this Friday, December 15th at 10 a.m. PT. Mraz will hit the stage alongside performers from eight local arts organizations: A Step Beyond Dancers, Banding Together, Diversionary Theatre, Monarch School Project, San Diego Young Artist Music Academy, Tap Fever Studios, Tierra Caliente Academy of Arts, and Wheelchair Dancers. They're all beneficiaries of grants from The Jason Mraz Foundation, which is dedicated to improving access to the arts for kids. It's a cause close to Mraz's heart for obvious reasons, considering his long, successful career in the arts. We recap it all—the open mic performance that launched his career (which Troy almost missed in favor of a punk show), the Dave Matthews endorsement that helped catapult him to fame, and, of course, his fan-favorite turn on Dancing with the Stars. “Over the past few months, I pushed myself creatively, and physically more than I have in decades,” Mraz says of his time on the show. “I revisited what it was like to be a beginner in the performing arts, to immerse myself in something completely new, finding strength, joy, self-acceptance, and pride as I learned and grew every week.” And Mraz isn't the only one experiencing growth. We offer reports from the front of San Diego's ever-expanding restaurant scene: First of all, a hell of a lot of fried chicken is coming to town. South Korean Fried Fave BHC Chicken will open in Sorrento Valley and Dave's Hot Chicken will open its sixth location in Mission Valley. Plus, tapas and small grower wine spot Finca launched in North Park with a crew formerly from Juniper & Ivy, and Priscilla Curiel will open Mujer Divina on Chula Vista's Third Avenue. See you next week! More information on the Jason Mraz Foundation: https://jasonmraz.com/foundation/ https://www.instagram.com/jasonmrazfoundation/ https://www.facebook.com/JasonMrazFoundation/
