Áine chats with Jason Ball, whose personal experience of coming out as a young gay man involved in his local AFL team in Yarraglen led to his passionate activism, the establishment of the Pride Cup and development of resources to educate communities and sports teams about inclusivity and the LGTBIQ+ community. "Ball started a petition on change.org on 9 September 2012 that called on the Australian Football League (AFL) to play "No To Homophobia" television commercials on the big screen of the 2012 AFL Grand Final and also commit to a Pride Round. The petition received over 29,000 signatures and gained national and international media coverage. The AFL agreed to screen the No to Homophobia TVCs during the preliminary finals that year. Ball was invited to lead the 18th Pride March Victoria alongside his teammates from the Yarra Glen Football Club. They were also joined by AFL footballers Brock McLean and Daniel Jackson, marking the first time AFL players had been formally involved in the event. In 2013, Ball partnered with the AFL Players Association to launch a social media campaign tackling homophobic language in sport, featuring some of the AFL's biggest names, including Jobe Watson, Scott Pendlebury and Andrew Swallow." On this weeks show, Brock McLean joins the Under Pressure Podcast to take a look back at his career, injuries and difficult periods during that time. Brock started off his career playing for the Dees and all was rolling really well his first few seasons. But in 2008, his first major came as he tore his Syndesmosis, which saw him have to wear a moon boot for the following 6 months. Which then continued on into some further issues as he was injured, the self-worth and the doubt started to creep into his mind. He had to distract himself from these things, which lead him down the path he certainly didn't want to be down and not using the right coping strategies to help himself. He talks through his thoughts he had during this difficult period in his life and gives great insights into what its like and what you can do when you're facing challenges like these yourself and know there are ways to help and assist. We talk about the amazing premiership drought that was broken this year by the Dees and how connected you still feel to your club post career and how important it is to keep those relationships moving forward in life. We finish off the podcast as we always do, with a draft. On todays show, we look at all-time VFL/AFL greats. There were some very good selections during this one. We also spoke about his life as a busy new dad, morning and evening routines plus some book recommendations. A super awesome show!

Men, we need to talk. The stereotypical eating disorder sufferer is a young, wealthy, white woman, but there's a lot of evidence telling us that the stereotype is inaccurate.Based on current numbers, one in three people living with an eating disorder are men, and there are a lot of men suffering in silence. In this episode of the Butterfly podcast: Let's Talk, one of the country's top eating disorder researchers, Dr Scott Griffiths from the University of Melbourne, says there could be a significant number of dudes with eating disorders we don't know about.“Men are really reluctant to go and see a doctor in the first place,” he tells us.That rings true for the three men we profile in Episode Two of Butterfly: Let's Talk, including Carlton and Melbourne Football star Brock McLean. The truth is, anyone, from primary school kids to middle-aged men—including sports stars like McLean—can get an eating disorder. This mental illness doesn't discriminate.“I grew up in a very old school family,” he tells us. “No complaining, no wingeing. If anything went wrong you just had to suck it up and get on with it.” Experts say that traditional ideas around masculinity discourage men to seek help when they know they have a problem. The Butterfly National Helpline is free and confidential and we encourage anyone who thinks they may need help with their body image or eating—or just want to find out more—to call 1800 ED HOPE (1800 33 4673) or visit butterfly.org.au.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
