A junior footballer for the Sandhurst Dragons in Bendigo and the Horsham Saints in Horsham, Robinson began covering football in 1992. Throughout his career he has predominantly covered Australian rules football and has been the chief football writer for the Herald Sun since 2012 following the retirement of Mike Sheahan. Robinson is former co-hosted the AFL 360 television program on Fox Footy from 2010 until his sacking at the end of 2024. He previously appeared regularly as a panelist on AFL Game Day from the show's launch in 2008 until 2011 when AFL 360 expanded to four nights a week through the AFL season. Robinson was a panelist on many of the 1116 SEN radio station's shows, including The Run Home and match day AFL discussion until the end of the 2017 season. In 2018, Robinson joined 3AW as a panelist on the Sunday Sport show alongside Daniel Harford and Jimmy Bartel. In the latter half of 2021, Robinson experienced multiple cardiac episodes which required medical attention, including open heart surgery. Robinson has been rumoured to have been involved in a variety of verbal and physical altercations with several fellow journalists, including Damian Barrett, Andy Maher and Michael Warner. In June 2017, Robinson tweeted about Collingwood footballer Alex Fasolo when his struggles with severe depression became known, suggesting that the quickness of Fasolo's recovery was an indication he was faking his illness. He later deleted the tweet and apologised for what he said, with the Collingwood president later saying that Robinson ignored the club's medical advice when contacting Fasolo.
In this episode of the Stronger Sales Team Podcast, host Ben Wright explores the complex realm of leadership and team management with Cameron Schwab, a distinguished figure in the Australian Football League (AFL) and an accomplished corporate leader. Cameron offers valuable insights drawn from his extensive career, which included several challenging roles as CEO of various AFL clubs. The conversation centres on the fundamental attributes of leadership, the necessity of maintaining self-composure in challenging circumstances, and the significant influence of personal integrity and awareness in navigating teams through adversity. About the Guest: Cameron Schwab is a prominent figure in sports management, widely recognised for his tenure as CEO of several AFL clubs, including Melbourne, Richmond, and Fremantle. He began his career as a recruiter for the Melbourne Football Club and made history as the youngest CEO of an AFL club at just 24 years old. Beyond his impressive achievements in sports, Cameron is also a talented artist currently pursuing Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts. Additionally, he founded DesignCEO, a consultancy dedicated to leadership and team development, showcasing his commitment to fostering effective leadership in various contexts. Key Takeaways: Cameron Schwab highlights a technique where he writes down what each moment in a negotiation or a meeting requires from him, focusing on traits like calmness, humility, kindness, and bravery. Leadership is about managing the most challenging and ambiguous situations effectively, not just about fulfilling a role. The impact of having strong, insightful support systems—like family or mentors—during tough times can profoundly affect a leader's performance and mindset. Building relationships that combine personal integrity with insightful advice can create meaningful, productive support networks. Maintaining a balance between professional demands and personal wellbeing is crucial for sustained leadership effectiveness. The Australian Football League (AFL) kicked off the new season last weekend. In the coming months, thousands of fans will be cheering on their favourite teams in the stadium, in pubs or at home in front of the TV. The sport, born in Australia, has found its own niche far from its homeland. Major German cities like Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, and Munich have embraced 'footy' with passion. To find out more about the German AFL culture, SBS spoke to the captain of the German AFL national team, Florian Naumann. In the interview, he reveals how he got into the sport, how widespread the sport is in Germany and why he prefers playing Australian football to soccer or handball.
In 2005, Dr Bennet Omalu would publish a report in the United States on the autopsy brain findings of a former professional footballer from the NFL. His conclusion was the former athlete suffered from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE); a disease caused by repeated brain injuries most likely due to sport. The response was swift and severe claiming that the findings were incorrect, the conclusions erroneous, and a retraction of this report was demanded. Surprisingly, this was not the first time medical literature has noted the link between sport, repeated head injuries and brain damage. The first publication was written in 1928 by Dr Harrison Martland who was the Chief Medical Examiner of Essex County in New Jersey. Harrison performed hundreds of autopsies on people with head injuries including boxers. He noted twenty-three examples of boxers with permanent brain damage that he called ‘punch drunk'. Other researchers found this was not limited to boxing but other contact sports such as football. Later, this condition became known as ‘Dementia pugilistica'. This disease has surged into the spotlight in the last decade due to a number of high-profile athletes who have been diagnosed with CTE. Unfortunately, both professional and amateur athletes are at risk. This condition also greatly impacts the family and friends of those who suffer from it. However, a great deal of misinformation also exists about the risks and causes of this disease. These two episodes (of which this is part 1) are designed to explain what we know, what we don't, and what can be done about this debilitating condition. This is the story of CTE, part 1. ** Please note: General Practitioners in Australia, will be able to claim 2.25 CPD points after listening to this episode and part 2. Full details and registration on our GP CPD Points page. Our special guests: Renee Tuck – sister of Shane Tuck who was a professional footballer in the Australian Football League (AFL) playing 173 games and a brief career as a boxer. Later in Shane's career, he suffered from mental health issues and in July 2020 took his own life. Shane was diagnosed with a severe form of CTE. He was only 38 years old. Associate Professor Michael Buckland – Head of the Neuropathology department at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, founder and director of the Australian Sports Brain Bank (ASBB), co-director of the Multiple Sclerosis Australian Brain Bank, and Head of the Molecular Neuropathology Program at the Brain & Mind Centre. Associate Professor Linda Iles – Head of the Forensic Pathology Services at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM). VIFM is in partnership with the ASBB to send brain specimens for further examination/analysis for suspected CTE or other neurodegenerative diseases. Greg Madigan (born 24 January 1970) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn and Freemantle in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1990s. Playing mostly at centre half back, Madigan was a member of Hawthorn's 1989 VFL Grand Final winning side, in only his 6th league game. However, in the subsequent years he failed to establish his position in the Hawthorn team, playing ten or fewer games in each of his six seasons at Hawthorn. In 1995 he was selected into the inaugural Fremantle Dockers squad with the second selection in the preseason draft. As one of the few players with AFL experience in the new expansion team, he managed the best season of his career, playing in 18 games. He remained with Fremantle for two more seasons, but struggled to keep his place, playing only 4 games in each of 1996 and 1997.

Áine chats with Jason Ball, whose personal experience of coming out as a young gay man involved in his local AFL team in Yarraglen led to his passionate activism, the establishment of the Pride Cup and development of resources to educate communities and sports teams about inclusivity and the LGTBIQ+ community. "Ball started a petition on change.org on 9 September 2012 that called on the Australian Football League (AFL) to play "No To Homophobia" television commercials on the big screen of the 2012 AFL Grand Final and also commit to a Pride Round. The petition received over 29,000 signatures and gained national and international media coverage. The AFL agreed to screen the No to Homophobia TVCs during the preliminary finals that year. Ball was invited to lead the 18th Pride March Victoria alongside his teammates from the Yarra Glen Football Club. They were also joined by AFL footballers Brock McLean and Daniel Jackson, marking the first time AFL players had been formally involved in the event. In 2013, Ball partnered with the AFL Players Association to launch a social media campaign tackling homophobic language in sport, featuring some of the AFL's biggest names, including Jobe Watson, Scott Pendlebury and Andrew Swallow." (Wikipedia, 13/6/2022). Jason has been recognised with numerous awards and acknowledgements including being named the Victorian Young Australian of the Year in 2017.

Welcome to Episode 20 - Footy, Masculinity and Mental Health This week I reflect on the David Noble spray to his North Melbourne players after their loss to the Brisbane Lions in Round 3. Players got emotional, and former coaches of the Australian Football League (AFL) questioned whether sprays were necessary in 2022. The media commentary around the incident had me reflecting on my footy days, and how footy clubs contribute to the perception that masculinity is about boys and men not showing emotions. I also reflect on current and former players who have experienced mental health issues, and my hope that AFL players speaking up about mental health can encourage other boys and men to speak up too. Today on The Negotiation, we speak with Tom Parker, Head of China with the Australian Football League (AFL) and Vice President for the Australia China Business Council. Tom shares his journey in the Chinese business world, beginning in 2007 with the founding of Red Tape Consulting, “a China Advisory business that helped stage the first AFL exhibition match as part of the Shanghai World Expo.” Since 2018, Tom continues to serve a prominent role in the AFL. As Head of China, Tom “drive[s] commercial outcomes from the ongoing engagement and games being played in Shanghai.”Before COVID-19, Tom's role as Head of China at the AFL was to serve as the bridge between Australian and Chinese brands. As the pandemic reared its head just before the beginning of 2020, Tom had been looking to boost the organization's social media presence and build on its branding. With both countries currently occupied with their respective challenges heading into the new normal, Tom is optimistic, but at the same time sees the future of the AFL as uncertain. At this point in time, the most they can do is to “ride the ship” onwards and continuously adapt to the situation at hand.Tom describes Australian sports as being a “bottom-up, grassroots”-led part of the culture, while Chinese sports is a “top-down” affair dictated by the state. Traditionally, the Chinese have generally focused on professional sports that are less team-oriented such as diving or table tennis. In recent years where globalization has become more prevalent than ever, ball sports, and the culture of fandom for teams and players have sprung up among the Chinese.

A violent on-field incident in the Australian Football League (AFL) has led to calls for police to bring criminal charges against one of the league's best players. West Coast player Andrew Gaff has been suspended for eight matches for punching 18-year-old Fremantle player Andrew Brayshaw behind play. Brayshaw has undergone surgery on a broken jaw and will require further treatment for three broken teeth. The teenager's first season in the game has come to an abrupt and violent end. The hit has prompted calls for all sorts of things; from a red card system in the AFL, to criminal charges and even jail time. Can you be charged with assault for punching an opponent on the sports field? On this episode of Just Cases we explore a similarly notorious incident in 1985. It led to the criminal prosecution of Leigh Matthews - a giant of Australian rules football held by many to be the greatest footballer to have ever played the game. ............................................. In this lecture, the first of three successive lectures on the 'Professional Team Sports Leagues in Australia', we set up a model that allows us to compare team behaviour in the Major Leagues (already considered as where the teams are modelled as profit-maximisers) with the Australian Football League (AFL), where the teams are instead modelled as win-maximisers who are willing to merely break-even. These modelling differences for the AFL are argued on the basis of very low average team profits, as well as the different history and ownership structure of the teams comparative to the Major Leagues. The ultimate aim is to find whether competitive balance policies, of both the revenue-sharing and labour market restriction types, are indeed effective (or ineffective) in maintaining competitive balance levels. To this end, today we describe many facets of the AFL as an (alternative) case study, then draw the basic unrestricted (free agency) equilibrium conditions under both team behaviour assumptions and compare those conditions. We will then proceed from this point to model various restrictions on the model next week. Copyright 2012 La Trobe University, all rights reserved. Contact for permissions.
