The headline is an inside joke among family and friends, a line of dialogue lifted from the 1978 novel "Panama," by Thomas McGuane. And now it's the title of a Radio Free Dogpatch podcast, a unsubtle bit of misdirection concerning an oversized orange turd that has proven impossible for a confused and bilious nation to flush. My apologies to Mr. McGuane. Sly and The Family Stone contributed a few seconds of "Family Affair" from their YouTube channel. Freesound kicked in a dog whining, a power failure, an internet outage, a garbage truck, and an elephant trumpeting. And Judge Dredd issued his ruling from YouTube.  All the other racket comes courtesy of The Proprietor.

Louise McGuane is a 20+ year veteran of the drinks industry, having spent her career working on some of the world's best known wine and spirits brands all over the globe. Growing up in a small town on the West coast of Ireland, Louise  was raised with a deep respect for her Irish roots and a passion for chasing new opportunities. After working internationally in the wine and spirits industry for many years, her evolution from small-town farm girl to Irish Whiskey pioneer came full circle when she returned home with a new-found commitment to elevating Irish Whiskey on the global stage. After finishing a degree in Philosophy and spending time in Boston, Massachusetts, Louise moved to New York City to work in marketing and communications at a global Champagne company. Here, she learned the complexities of the drinks industry and built a career that took her as far as Singapore and Mexico. These experiences not only helped her become well-versed in the industry but reconnected her to her love for her Irish heritage.Louise returned to Ireland for a summer to research the global significance of Irish Whiskey and discovered the prominent role it had in her country's history. In 2016 she returned home to Ireland, at the beginning of the Irish Whiskey Renaissance.  Inspired by JJ Corry – an Irish Whiskey bonder from the 1800s that she discovered during her research and after whom her company is named – she sought to develop new ways to create remarkable spirits. She founded J.J. Corry Irish Whiskey and became the first modern whiskey bonder on the island of Ireland in over a century, thereby resurrecting a lost craft. Today, JJ Corry is renowned in the Irish Whiskey category, and,  in their latest venture, Louise has partnered with The Last Drop Distillers to create The Last Drop's first-ever Irish Whiskey, Release No. 32: A 32 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey – a landmark moment for the business. In this episode, Louise talks to Rebecca about an idyllic childhood growing up on the family farm in the  west of Ireland, being expelled from boarding school and working all over the world, before returning home to her roots to found her business.

Most people who interview Tom want to talk about his crazy days in Key West in the 1970s, , fishing for tarpon with Jim Harrison, Guy de la Valdene, Jimmy Buffet, and other notable characters. However, in the podcast we talk about what he is doing now—his fascination with small-stream trout fishing, why he would rather wade than fish from a boat, his opinion on guides who yell at their clients, and how to grow old gracefully and still continue to fish with a fly rod. It was a real honor to chat with him and I know you'll enjoy this very special podcast. Is there a written history of Orvis? What is the best reel lubricant, and how should I maintain my cork drag surface? Can dumbbell eyes damage fly rods? If so, what should I do to keep flies tied with them from hitting my rod? Do trout eat those little black and brown stoneflies that hatch during the winter and early spring?  Can you explain when I would use weighted flies vs. split shot vs. poly leaders when fishing nymphs? Can you compare the relative advantages of the 10 1/2-foot 3-weight and the 11-foot 3-weight Blackout rod? I saw people catching fish on nymphs. Elise Atchison's debut novel, Crazy Mountain, was the recipient of the Eludia Award, an award given to first-time women novelists over forty. She worked for over ten years on this book, which features a completely different point of view for each chapter. The novel takes place in a fictional region where the typical struggle is playing out between people who have lived in the region want to preserve what they have while outsiders move in with the idea of developing the area for their own purposes. And for this episode, we are breaking away from our normal format a little by featuring a second writer who is still with us. Tom McGuane is one of the most highly regarded writers in America, and has lived in Paradise Valley since the '70s. Although much of his later work takes place in Montana, we chose an earlier novel, Panama, that is set in Key West, Florida, and tells the story of a man struggling to find meaning in a life most people would dream of.

McGuane's first three novels—The Sporting Club (1969), The Bushwhacked Piano (1971), and Ninety-two in the Shade (1973)—present the central plot and theme of his early fiction: a man, usually from a secure family, exiles himself from American society (which he despises for its materialism and triviality), removes himself to an isolated locale, and then finds a reason—alienation, attraction to a woman, rights to territory—to oppose another man in a succession of acts of escalating violence and revenge. The locales of his novels—Key West, Florida; northern Michigan; Montana—and his scenes of fishing and personal combat suggest the influence of Ernest Hemingway. Whereas McGuane's early novels are noted for their stylistic extravagance, a growing plainness of style developed in his later novels. They include Panama (1978), Nobody's Angel (1981), Something to Be Desired(1984), Keep the Change (1989), and Nothing but Blue Skies (1992). After a hiatus from writing novels, McGuane returned with The Cadence of Grass(2002), which depicts a Montana clan's colorfully tangled lives. It was followed by Driving on the Rim (2010), a freewheeling tale of a small-town doctor.McGuane also wrote short stories, collected in To Skin a Cat (1986), Gallatin Canyon (2006), Crow Fair (2015), and Cloudbursts (2018). In addition, he penned screenplays, several of which were adaptations of his novels. His essay collections—An Outside Chance (1980; rev. ed., 1990), Some Horses (1999), and The Longest Silence: A Life in Fishing (1999)—reflect mostly on leisure and the outdoors, especially his passion for fly-fishing and horseback riding. McGuane was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2010.From https://www.britannica.com/biography/Thomas-McGuane. For more information about Thomas McGuane:“Thomas McGuane on Not Living the Writer's Life”: https://lithub.com/thomas-mcguane-on-not-living-the-writers-life/“Thomas McGuane on the American West”: https://www.newyorker.com/books/this-week-in-fiction/thomas-mcguane-10-18-21“The Late Style of Thomas McGuane”: https://believermag.com/the-late-style-of-thomas-mcguane/

Corry Facts Irish Whiskey is currently in a renaissance period, after a long recovery following the industry's collapse in the 1930s. It was the world's fastest-growing spirits category over the past decade. As a Bonder, J.J. Corry does not distill. One thing that seems to be true in all generations of American life is that it can be challenging to summon the courage to follow your dreams in a material world. In this conversation with writers Eric M. Johnson and Thomas McGuane, they considered this difficulty paralleled with their own work and lives. Through the lens of Johnson's debut novel—a story of a young man who must decide what he stands for in the midst of Wall Street greed and family civil war—and McGuane's fiction and life, they shared their struggles and triumphs on the path to following their own dreams. With short readings from their respective works, they touched on writing, life, and fly fishing. Don't miss this riveting discussion from two consummate American writers. Thomas McGuane is an American writer. He began contributing fiction to The New Yorker in 1994. He has written ten novels, including the National Book Award-nominated Ninety-Two in the Shade, as well as six nonfiction essay collections and two short-story collections. His work has been anthologized in the “Best American Stories,” “Best American Essays,” and “Best American Sporting Essays.” His most recent book is Cloudbursts: Collected and New Stories. Eric M. Johnson is an American journalist, author, and outdoorsman. His current journalistic focus is aerospace – from Boeing's 737 MAX crisis to Elon Musk's SpaceX – and he has covered former President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, breaking national news, and transportation since joining Reuters in 2011 in Chicago. He has also been a staff reporter for Sun-Times Media Group and covered sports for the Observer, in London. The brand's first offering in America, The Hanson, is a blend of Irish grain whiskeys sourced from different distilleries and it clocks in at 92 proof. McGuane has the only all-female Irish whiskey company in Ireland. Louise will discuss the challenges she has overcome as a female in the whiskey industry and how she's turned her family farm into a whiskey phenomenon. https://www.jjcorry.com/Instagram: @louisemcguane & @jjcorrywhiskeyTwitter: @lmcguane & @WhiskeyGateLouise McGuane Bio:Before founding J.J. Corry Irish Whiskey in 2015, Louise McGuane worked at LVMH, Diageo and Pernod Ricard in New York, London, Singapore and Paris. She is now based back on her family farm in Cooraclare, County Clare where she matures new make spirit in a purpose built bonded rackhouse and blends it with mature whiskey to create the brand's signature style. Here, she speaks to Candice Tucker about the whiskey bonding process, the advantages of being a woman and the rising demand for Irish whiskey"Of course, my experiences will be shared by all women who work in such industries, but I think it's very powerful to be underestimated. Irish whiskey continues to be a mostly older male environment and most of them scoffed at me when I started the business, but I went on to launch the first ever design led luxury Irish whiskey and this year made Drinks International Top Ten bestselling Irish Whiskey list, so who's scoffing now? When you are underestimated you can fly under the radar and achieve incredible things without anybody standing in your way as you are not perceived as a threat.""I have built and am continuing to build the most comprehensive library of flavours of Irish whiskey in my rackhouse. We operate in a similar way to a perfumer: we build a whiskey by blending layers of flavours together. By ensuring I have styles of whiskey from multiple craft producers I have a really vibrant pool of flavours to pull from. This results in utterly unique whiskies and styles."Make sure to subscribe & review Lady Empire above for the opportunity to be featured!

Monte Burke is a journalist, New York Times bestselling author, and contributing editor at Forbes, Garden & Gun, and The Drake. His most recent book is Lords of the Fly: Madness, Obsession, and the Hunt for the World-Record Tarpon, which was one of the best books I read in 2020. He’s also the author of Saban: The Making of a Coach, which also happens to be one of my all-time favorite books. Whether he’s writing about fly fishing, Colorado conservationists, elk hunting, or football, Monte’s work is always impeccably researched and fun to read. - I loved every page of Lords of the Fly, and both anglers and non-anglers alike will be drawn into the book’s engaging story and wild characters. One of my favorite aspects of the book was how it opened my eyes to the connections between the 1970s Florida fishing scene and modern-day art, poetry, and literature of the American West. Western luminaries who are frequently mentioned on this podcast-- Tom McGuane, Jim Harrison, Richard Brautigan, Russell Chatham, and more-- all created art and chased tarpon together in Florida in the 1970s. They all eventually moved West and became some of the most respected western artists of their time, but were it not for the creative foundation they built in Florida, today’s western literary and art scene would look quite different. - Monte and I had a fun and wide-ranging conversation discussing everything from fly fishing to fatherhood. We started out talking about Lords of the Fly-- we obviously talked about the crew of anglers that included McGuane and Harrison, but we also discussed the full cast of obsessed characters who make up the history of fly fishing for tarpon. Monte explains why this story was so compelling to him, and he discusses some of the headwinds he encountered while trying to get the book published. We discuss Monte’s attraction to writing about intense, obsessed people, whether they happen to be world champion coaches or anglers. We chatted about Monte’s writing and journalism career, as well as some of the routines that allow him to be such a prolific writer. And as usual, we discuss favorite books, authors, films, and he offers up some wise parting words. - If you love fishing and literature, or if you’re an aspiring writer or artist, this episode is chock-full of useful information. This week I sat down with Monte Burke to discuss his new book, Lords of the Fly. I was lucky enough to get an early copy of the book and give it a read before our interview. This book features some of my all time heroes and tells the incredible story of chasing after the world record tarpon in the late 70’s and early 80’s in Homosassa, Florida. Monte traces the history of Saltwater Flyfishing. This is an incredibly interesting story, featuring legends like Steve Huff, Dale Perez, Lefty Kreh, Chico Fernandez, Mark Sosin, Stu Apte, Tom Evans, Flip Pallot, Billy Pate, Ralph Delph, tom McGuane, Jim Harrison, Russell Chattem, Guy De La Valdene, Ted Williams, Andy Mill, and many others who were responsible for early innovation or obsessed with catching the world record tarpon on the fly. This story is full of friendships and rivalries, some even escalating to sinking boats, ruining marriages, and much more. Monte really dives into this in his book, interviewing many of these people to get the exact story. Monte has a background of working for Forbes, where he learned the best way to get accurate information, and he does a ton of digging to make sure that he got this wild story fully accurate.
