The number of cases of employed people in Clare treated for drug and alcohol addiction has increased by 36% in the last year. New figures from the Health Research Board show there were 122 instances in this county where people in regular employment presented for treatment over the past twelve months. Of these, 34 cases related specifically to cocaine addiction, which is up 47% in the last year. MidWest Addiction Counsellor Michael Guerin says while it's positive more people are coming forward, the growing cocaine problem is alarming.

Dr. T and Truth Fairy welcome guest Sapha to the show to talk about healing through ayahuasca. When Sapha reached out via email, Truth Fairy realized she has friends in common with him, and, being touched by his email and story, invited him to be on the show. The details of his advocacy and journey are inspiring to hear. Sapha shares his story of emigrating to Canada from Tehran, Iran, during the Islamic Revolution. The pain, abandonment, and confusion that went with Sapha's story led to a need for escapism through substance abuse. The addiction lasted through Sapha's career in the oil and gas industry until age 29 when he realized he needed help. But after being denied assistance from the BC government, Sapha's salvation came from an aunt who connected him with the Leipzig Serenity Retreat, a holistic recovery centre in Saskatchewan.Dr. T and Truth Fairy talk with Sapha about how he found ayahuasca and his early psychedelic experiences, the need to really heal the underlying causes of addiction and not simply the addiction itself, and the benefits of small group work that Sapha embarked upon. Sapha also addresses how he now does a lot of work with men who have suffered at the hands of the patriarchal system and through the expectations placed on men. This episode reveals a lot about the benefits of working with ayahuasca and the healing possibilities of being on a psychedelic-assisted recovery journey.“And that's a big part of the teaching here with what we do and the way that we work with men, it's like ayahuasca is a tool. You know, psychedelics are tools. They're not a cure for addiction. They're an opportunity to get a really close look from a different lens. How to uncover and unravel this bundle of emotions and these layers of pain that as men or as people we've been born with,” - SaphaResources discussed in this episode:Information on AyahuascaLeipzig Serenity Retreat---Punk Therapy: website |email

What role does Virtual Treatment play in drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation? A fire four-and-a-half years ago at the Native Horizons Treatment Centre in the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation meant they had to find that out well before COVID made virtual care a widespread reality. Their Executive Director, Wanda Smith, joins host Carol Hopkins for a discussion on what she and her team have learned in those years, including what differences virtual outreach treatment services have made to programming and clients, are thereinnovations arising from virtual treatment delivery, and how have connections to culture been facilitated through virtual services? For 35 years Wanda Smith has been the Executive Director for Native Horizons Treatment Centre. Her career in the field of First Nations addictions has spanned 45 years in various positions from Community Youth Counsellor, to Native Addictions Program Teaching Master at Northern College in Timmins, to Executive Director for White Buffalo Youth Treatment Centre, Sturgeon Lake, Saskatchewan. Liz and Jesse are joined by Alison Backler, Clinical Nurse Consultant Alcohol and Drug Service RBWH. In this episode we look at drug and alcohol addiction and considerations for the acute hospital environment. Alison's Five Things Addiction doesn't discriminate. The role of thiamine. Why withdrawal (particularly alcohol and benzodiazepines) is so serious. Be wary of bias. Patient's with addictions, still have a need for, and right to, adequate pain relief. There is a difference between recreational substance use and addiction/dependence.
Today my guest is Dr Laura Petracek, a clinical psychologist and author of “The DBT Workbook for Alcohol and Drug Addiction: Skills and Strategies for Emotional Regulation, Recovery and Relapse Prevention”. Can I just tell you… I LOVE A WORKBOOK! This one in particular is good for people like us because there are questions and writing prompts that support behavior change. But before we jump in, it's resource time! Today I just want to talk about one of the most misunderstood tools, meditation. Whenever I suggest meditation to clients or friends, I'm inevitably met with resistance. The two comments I hear the most are: either “I just can't meditate”, or “Yeah I should probably do that”, but it never happens. So let's clarify the biggest misconception: Meditation is not about not thinking. If you think you're failing at meditation because you can't keep thoughts out, that idea is a misunderstanding. In meditation, there is no goal per se other than to be fully present in the moment. As you notice your brain is thinking, you just bring your awareness back to the breath. If you notice you are thinking 1,000 times, then you simply notice without judgment and bring it back. It's like casting a line out when you're fishing. You focus on the breath, notice when you're lost in thought, and reel it back in. Meditation is a practice, and like any practice, we suck at it in the beginning, then we keep practicing and get better and better. In regards to why people consider it but don't do it, I propose it;s because it's not a priority. I wonder if it's not a priority because the value of meditation just hasn't been made clear enough. But instead of talking about why its so good for you, which a lot of people do, I'm going to highlight the COST of NOT doing it. If we can agree that the quality of your life depends on the thoughts you think and the actions you take, then we have to acknowledge a simple truth which is that it all centers in your brain. And just like you wouldn't run a marathon without training first, why would you think you could tackle something like getting sober, or make any major change in your life without conditioning your mind first? It's where all your decisions are made! Meditation is the process of conditioning your mind and your nervous system to help you achieve your goals so that you can ultimately achieve what we all want. Things like better relationships, health, peace, satisfaction, contentment and connection. If you DON'T practice meditation, it could literally cost you the very things you are actively trying so hard to achieve. I hope this helps you to decide to make meditation a priority. There are endless youtube videos and apps available at your fingertips. So do it today, and let me know what meditations you like and I'll share them on the Facebook page! So that's it! Is it possible for diet changes to help someone recovering from drug or alcohol abuse? A recovering addict teamed with researchers to find out. Adam Sud has used a plant-based diet as a key component to his continued ability to maintain sobriety for many years. He wanted to see whether it was possible to replicate the success. He and lead researcher Tara Kemp, PhD, join “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to talk about what happened when patients at a rehab facility began eating a plant-based diet as part of their recovery program. The results of the study appear to offer hope to those struggling with drugs, alcohol, and depression. Darryl says: My oldest of two boys, Chase, attended college on a football scholarship. He dropped out in the second semester of his freshman year after developing a drug addiction. When I first learned of Chase's drug habit, I didn't know anything about substance use disorders, and I panicked. I made a lot of parenting mistakes. Through an intervention, we were able to get Chase into treatment, but I didn't realize the proper role of the family in the recovery process. In some ways I was enabling Chase and doing things that may have contributed to his eventual relapse. I worried about Chase constantly, but it seemed as though my efforts to help him only made matters worse.Chase returned home from treatment and was doing well with his recovery at first, but months later, he relapsed and in 2014 at the age of 20, Chase died in a drug-impaired wreck. Chase was a passenger in the front seat of his own car. The 18-year-old driver took her own life 7 months later. After Chase died, I immersed myself in learning everything I could about substance use disorders. (drug & alcohol addiction).IN this episode he shares what he has learned. For thirty years, my husband struggled with drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. After silently dealing with war-related PTSD for several years and medically retiring from his job in law enforcement in 2015, his drug use hit an all time high. Unable to slow down his drug use, his life quickly spiraled downward until he nearly lost his family, hope, and life itself. Overcoming addiction for personal empowerment and happiness!Joining me today for an honest, heartfelt and authentic conversation is the wonderful Lucy Jane. This woman knows her own power!Lucy is the founder and director of the "High On Life" brand and a women's self-empowerment coach and addictive behaviour mentor. In her younger years, Lucy experienced horrendous bullying which lead her to believe in the message, of the very people who were bullying her, which was, that, she was not enough, she was not pretty enough, and that there was something wrong with her.Desperately wanting to escape those thoughts, feelings, pain, and reality Lucy would frequently anaesthetise herself with alcohol and drugs.Until one day she had an awakening - an incredible awakening and not only found her strength within, but Lucy became so profoundly aware that she was not her thoughts. These thoughts were not who she was, or is.Since then Lucy has gone on to not only change her life beyond all measure, she has helped so many other amazing women out there transform their lives too.It never ceases to amaze me how much strength and power we all have within us and that is exactly what Lucy has done, she tapped into her power within and has overcome serious addiction on her own! I met Jennifer through Instagram and after I saw what she was promoting, I immediately knew I wanted her as a guest speaker on my podcast. I get many requests to interview celebrities because people like to know about their lives. And I have interviewed celebrities. They are ordinary people just like you and me. Jennifer is just like you and me. Only to me, each human is extraordinary in their own way. Jennifer is 47 years old and spent 13 years of her life abusing alcohol and drugs. That doesn't define her. What defines her is her heart and soul and beliefs and what she is doing with her life now. During her years of abuse she experienced more than any of us should in a life time. She was a victim of violent crime a multiple of times. She was car jacked twice. She was shot in a drug deal gone bad. She was kidnapped at gunpoint, beaten and whipped by a drug dealer and had to have her face reconstructed. (btw...that drug dealer committed homicide while he was on an ankle monitor for her kidnapping, was sentenced four years for her kidnapping and is currently waiting for his trial on the homicide.) She finally got sober on 07/13/21 after being arrested on her first ever drug charge. She moved to Charleston to live in an Oxford House(sober living) and has been sober for 214 days now. Not because she was court ordered. Not because someone she loved gave her a choice but because she chose to. Remember if it's not our own choice, more than likely it won't last. She went through recovery with the help of a 12 step program. Since she's been sober she has started two business's. Keto Queen City- an online Keto products store and she believes that Keto has helped her stay sober by curbing her cravings for drugs/alcohol. Her second business is on : https://www.InspiringSobriety.com this is an online recovery and sobriety apparel and gift store. Her story is real and raw and heartbreaking and yet inspirational. Our chat is long but interesting and helpful. I hope you will take the time to listen and share, wherever you can and to all your friends, asking them to do too. helpful resources include. Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one for those who are struggling with conquering drug and alcohol addiction Show Guests: Rachel Kove & Seth Hall A recent article published in the Washington Post states, “many addiction treatment centers do not follow up with their patients, the ‘100 percent’ success rate some cite only applies to those who complete the length of their stay. When we weight in on the relapse rates that are currently estimated to be as high as 80% and then consider of the many thousands of dollars spent by families and provided government by supported programs such as: rehab facilities, group therapy, wilderness programs, etc., we are left asking the a most obvious question: If these programs are not working long-term, are there options that are effective? Home Care Recovery Solutions co-founders, Rachel Kove and Seth Hall, share their individual experiences as alcohol and heroin addicts, respectively, and the many relapses they endured after traditional treatments, as well as the the process that finally propelled each of them into the field of sustainable recovery. According to Kove, “Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one. The model we found that provides a lasting difference is actually coming to a client’s home to create one of the most critical elements to recovery – a one-on-one support system that builds a bridge back into a functioning, purpose driven life with meaning. At a time when addictions are rising to epidemic levels, we are finding this methodology just as applicable to mental health issues and other forms of addiction, as it is to drugs and alcohol.”

Micheal Hilton, with over 10 years of sobriety, discusses his recovery portfolio. Micheal Hilton is a leader in the recovery community and does personal coaching with his company Breakthrough Coaching. 60 minutes recently did a segment on addiction. Micheal Botticelli, the "Drug Czar” is someone who from first hand experience knows the intricacies of alcoholism and addiction. Here are some key points of what I took from this segment. 40 years and a trillion dollars, nation has little to show of the war on drugs. 21 million americans are addicted to drugs and alcohol and nearly 1/2 of federal incarcerations are in for drug crimes. “can’t arrest addiction out of people.” “We have learned that addiction is a brain disease.” “ We can’t expect cancers patients to just stop having cancer.” Addicts should be patients and not prisoners. Michael Botticelli has created a high school for teens in recovery in Massachusetts. Convicts can choose rehab over jail and this actually reduces crime. in 1998 crashed his car and woke up hand cuffed to a gurney. Alcohol free for 27 years. Oversees 26 billion dollar budget across 16 government agencies. Over 1/2 of the money goes to drug enforcement. Says the heroin crisis was created at home. Pain scripts have risen from 76 million in 1991 to 207 million in 2015. More than 120 americans die of drug overdoses each day. Tried an experiment in 2010 with the quincy police department. Officers are armed with Naloxone. A nasal spray for an overdose. Also changed laws called the good samaritan law. Today, 32 states have adopted similar laws and more than 800 police departments carry Naloxone. In Massachussets, Botticelli has made treating addiction routine health care. The affordable care act requires the most of insurance companies to cover addiction treatment. Substance abuse is one of the only disease where we let people reach their most acute point of the disease or “bottom” before we intervene. Botticelli prefers the word disorder instead of addict. Sees a model in the attitude towards the stigma with the gay rights movement. He was more comfortable being a gay man, before saying he was an alcoholic. “We have more work to do.” over 1/2 a million a year are killed by legal drugs. Alcohol and nicotine. Botticelli is not in favor of legalizing marijuana. Grew up as in insecure kid. A very wise judge said you can either get care for your drinking problem or you continue the path of this criminal behavior. You Might be an Alcoholic if... Claire You keep a note pad by the phone so you can take notes about your drunk dialings, but then you can't read your handwriting You're now sober but want to wear a sign on your shirt that says you are enjoying a piece of gum to merely blow bubbles, not to cover up the vodka smell Caleb You buy canned beer so you can hide it in your bag without anybody hearing the glass clinks Simone If you log into MyFitnessPal as soon as you wake up...to log in the calories of the 8 double whiskeys you'll be drinking later...to know how much not to eat today. Shane If after a night of drinking an entire 26er of scotch, the only thing you can think of is "what am I going to drink today?" Brian in KC, MO You might be an alcoholic if it's your turn to be the DD, so before the baseball game you pound beers at the tailgate before the game hoping it carries you through to the end of the game....but then the game gets rained out in the 5th inning and you are still too drunk to drive home. This episode was brought to you by Sober Nation.
