We're taking a long train ride on the California Zephyr. The Amtrak line winds through Emeryville, Sacramento, Truckee and then heads east toward Chicago. Parts of the trip are spectacularly beautiful, with scenes of the Rocky Mountains, Donner Lake and the Truckee River. This route also holds so much rich California history – a portion of it is close to the first transcontinental railroad. Starting in the late 1800s, the railroad developed in parallel with the state's agriculture business, food industries, and dining traditions. It also exploited land and workers, spurring civil rights activism. For her series CA Foodways, reporter Lisa Morehouse explores some of the little-known history of the connection between the railroad and food in our state. This episode was produced with support from the Food and Environment Reporting Network, and California Humanities, a nonprofit partner of National Endowment for the Humanities. Big thanks also go to the African American Museum and Library at Oakland, the library and archives at the California State Railroad Museum, and Rachel Reinhard. The California Zephyr, the cross-country line serving Nebraska, makes makes one eastbound and one westbound stop at five stations. It's a historic route traveling between Chicago and the San Francisco area. According to Amtrak's annual report released this month, over 350,000 people used that line. That's an increase of a 6.9 percent over the previous year.

Garrett Farwell returns to the podcast this week to talk about his recent trip from California to Colorado aboard Amtrak's California Zephyr. How does a “Scannerd” occupy their time while on a multi-day and multi-state land cruise? With their portable scanner of course! Garrett shares how he prepared for his trip using online resources to find frequencies he might be interested in monitoring on his journey and how one last minute surprise really helped him get his trip off on the right “track”. I always look forward to having Garrett on the podcast and would like to thank him again for sharing what he has learned on this trip with the “Scannerd” community. ====================================

In this podcast Park Interpretive Specialist Audrey Lokteff sits down with Grammy Award Winning Sound Archivist and Curator Jeff Place to discuss the connections between the railroad and music. This episode is dedicated to Art Cort, a docent at the California state railroad museum for 29 years. Art passed away on August 17th, 2020. He will be best remembered as a museum host, welcoming thousands of guests with warm and happy tunes on his harmonica. He was a long-time participant of the Amtrak Interpretive Program where museum docents narrated the history of the Transcontinental Railroad on board the California Zephyr between Sacramento and Reno. Art completed over 9,000 hours as a docent which included 128 trips on Amtrak. The railroad museum sends their condolences to his family and the innumerable others in the community that were positively affected by his dedication, adventurous spirit, kindness, and love of the railroad. We will deeply miss our friend and colleague. In the Travel News, Amtrak is putting Covid relief funds to good use, restoring daily services on many long distance trains, including the California Zephyr. American Airlines tells 15,000 employees to forget the furlough notices, and air travel has had a significant bump in the past 7-10 days. But, hotels are still in big trouble. Now it’s the Fairmont San Jose, the centerpiece hotel downtown, which has shuttered its doors after losing $38 million in the past year. Travelers United has put forth a pretty solid idea regarding airline passenger rights. Post them at the airport. Very few travelers know the simple rules which protect them. So why not make those rights extremely public? Because it isn’t in the best interest of one group….the airlines. More discussion in our Smarter Traveler segment. For nearly more than 7 decades, 3 generations of the Perillo family have taken people on vacation. Italy is their specialty, but they now offer other destinations. Steve Perillo, owner of the 3rd generation family company, joins us to talk overseas travel. Finally, we have the story of the man who spent years in jail because Hertz Car Rental wouldn’t turn over the documents which proved his innocence. We have the full story.

We are big fans of trains and the previous episode focused on the Trails and Rails program, which we were able to experience on a 2017 trip on the Southwest Chief. In 2020, we took two other long-distance trains: the Sunset Limited in January and the California Zephyr in March. Amtrak has 30 train routes throughout the United States which cover 500 destinations in 46 states, offering some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Train travel has been likened to a “land cruise” and we definitely considered the train trips part of the vacation, exemplifying the adage that it is not about the destination but the journey. We appreciated the opportunity to not only learn about the history and geology of the U.S. but also to get to know our fellow passengers and Amtrak staff. While Covid-19 has altered operations significantly, we encourage our listeners to consider a long-distance train ride in the future.
