The Teacher Workload: Teachers Get Less for More

The Teacher Workload: Teachers Get Less for More In this episode, Anne, Jen, and their special guest Maria delve into the multifaceted nature of the teacher workload, shedding light on the fact that the profession entails much more than simply standing in front of a classroom and delivering the curriculum.  We discuss the term "teachering." Anne found this term in a blog post on teachbetter.com's site. The curriculum coordinator for 21st Century Teaching and Learning, Alexy Valencic's discussed the term “teachering” in his post.  [00:06:08] Teacher workload Teaching vs Teachering.  [00:10:57] Duties and responsibilities.  [00:25:57] Compensation for extracurricular activities.  [00:29:27] Teacher overtime and FLSA labor laws.  [00:32:48] Teachers' workload and overtime pay.  [00:36:43] Teachers and overtime restrictions. [00:46:14] Saying no and setting boundaries.  According to Valencic's definitions, the teaching workload involves identifying what needs to be learned and guiding the learning process until achieving the desired goal. This encompasses state standards, curriculum instruction, teacher-student relationships, assessment, and progress monitoring. On the other hand, the teaching workload also includes “teachering,” made up of all the additional tasks and responsibilities that teachers are asked or expected to undertake, often without any extra compensation. “Teachering" tasks can range from the many meetings teachers are expected to attend to everyday things like bus and dance duties. Expectations can also include giving up lunch and after-school time for detentions, clubs, professional development, IEP meetings, and parent phone calls. Overall, the episode sheds light on the additional responsibilities and tasks teachers must shoulder beyond their classroom teaching duties.  Did you know that teachers cannot receive overtime payments? We didn't until we learned about the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). If the word “teacher” is attached to your job description, you are not entitled to overtime, no matter how little money you may make. New teachers are in the dark about the extent of the teacher workload. While new teachers may anticipate some meetings, the sheer number of meetings they must attend may surprise them. Teacher education programs fail to prepare teachers for the wide range of responsibilities they will encounter throughout their careers. To address these challenges, we suggest that teachers engage in discussions to identify and evaluate the value of their extra tasks. By collectively determining which duties are essential and which are unnecessary, teachers can advocate for changes and potentially alleviate or reduce the burden of the teacher's workload on specific responsibilities.  Additionally, we emphasize the importance of supporting new teachers and ensuring they can handle these additional duties. Experienced teachers must demonstrate to new teachers that it is acceptable to decline certain tasks, ultimately promoting a healthier work-life balance for educators. This episode underscores the reality that teachers must often go beyond their primary teaching role and assume additional responsibilities. We emphasize the need for awareness, support, and advocacy to address the challenges associated with these extra tasks and to ensure fair compensation for teachers' efforts.  Summertime is the perfect time to start coordinating efforts to reform the expectations on a teacher's time. Now is the time to get the conversation about all the unnecessary “teachering” at your school. Do this before the beginning of a new school year overwhelms your attention and you find out you've been signed up for more than you've bargained for! Thanks for listening! NO ONE LIKES CHANGEIt's no secret that I am a big fan of shaking things up in the classroom and swapping out old, stale ways of teaching and replacing them with modern 21st century teaching practices. Now, you would think that I welcome change with open arms because of how often I talk about applying and trying out new teaching methods, or a new cool classroom technology tool. And of course, you might think that I'm quick to abandon traditional teaching methods by how often I talk about LINKtivites - my solution to making learning fun and engaging by providing students with a multimedia learning experience.Well, guess what.  No - I don't like change.  I'm not always the first one to adopt something new.  I'm often tardy to the party when it comes to trends. But - what I do have going for me that often helps me go outside my comfort zone is my desire to provide the best possible learning experience for students.  In today's episode I'm sharing with you a replay of an episode I did in early 2021 about 4 alternatives to teaching from a textbook. Textbooks seem to be that tried and true tool that teachers have had forever.  But - if I'm being honest - I've never seen a student get excited about reading from a textbook.  And likewise - I've never seen a teacher get excited either. In this episode, learn about four 21st century teaching methods that you can apply to your classroom today to replace teaching from a boring, or outdated textbook. For complete show notes visit:  classroomnook.com/podcast/114---------------LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE:POST: Five Reasons Why You Should Use Reader's Theater in the Upper Elementary ClassroomRESOURCES:  Discovery Learning FoldersNative American Regions in North America Political Decisions Made During the Civil WarBiomes Early European ExplorersMajor Battles of the American RevolutionPOST: Engaging Your Students With LINKtivity Interactive Learning Guides (Plus grab a FREE LINKtivity!)LINKtivity® Learning Membership  (Get a FREE 7-Day Trial!)

When North Dakota elementary school teacher Kayla Dornfeld sat down at her local coffee shop to do some work, she couldn't help but notice how many people were drawn to working there as well. It was a welcoming focus-friendly vibe she wanted to recreate in her own classroom. That “Starbucks” revelation and the physical redesign of her classroom translated into significant improvements in learning. Her students were given the freedom to choose where they worked and what kind of position they preferred. The result—students happy to be at school, better focus, and the near disappearance of behavioral issues. It is a classroom design that is being modeled globally. Redesigning her classroom with flexible seating was just the beginning of Dornfeld's fresh approach to teaching. Her insights and intuition have inspired many innovations that this forward-thinking educator has implemented to prepare her students for real-time and future success. Says Dornfeld, “My classroom is all about choices for kids from where they sit to how they learn, to even how they show me that they've mastered a standard.” Teachers come from all over the state to observe her classroom. Named one of the tech-savviest teachers in the United States by the New York Times, Dornfeld has been lauded internationally for her approach to teaching digital citizenship to her students. She believes that educators should embrace technology and teach young people how to use it responsibly. Dornfeld developed her own digital certification curriculum, teaching online etiquette, social media responsibility, and how to recognize cyberbullying. When her students are “certified,” she gives them access to her social media and the classroom Twitter account. Dornfeld has been recognized as the 2020 Top Educator of the Year (International Association of Top Professionals), North Dakota's 2019 Teacher of Year, and honored twice (2017, 2018) by Global One HundrED as one of the top 100 innovative educators in the world. While these accolades are wonderful, Dornfeld says her real reward comes from her students. “My kids love coming to school and that's my number one goal. I want my classroom to be a place where kids really want to be and not a place they have to be.” Dornfeld's ideas are changing the shape of education, but her north star remains steady. “If it's right for kids, it's right.”
