Market Holiday Alert Heads up, traders! Indian stock markets will be closed on April 14 (Ambedkar Jayanti) and April 18 (Good Friday). Plan your trades accordingly. US-China Trade War Reloaded The tariff tussle is back on. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced new sector-specific tariffs on smartphones, semiconductors, and pharma, likely within a month. “We can't rely on China for essentials,” he told ABC News, signaling a push to bring manufacturing home. This comes after Trump temporarily exempted some Chinese electronics from a 145% retaliatory tariff, a move that briefly helped companies like Apple, which had lost $640 billion in market value. With fresh tariffs looming, China is urging a rollback, but the tech and pharma trade war may just be heating up again. Summer Surge: Indians Flock Abroad India's scorching summer is sending travelers packing. Outbound travel is up 15–20% year-on-year, say visa providers. Top destinations: Europe, US, Canada, and Southeast Asia. “Plan early,” urges VFS Global, as visa demand jumps 11% since 2024. Peak season might stretch into October, and agencies are leaning on AI to speed up processing. From leisure to study and work, Indians are going global—and not looking back. Cleartrip's Costly Flight Plan Despite MS Dhoni's pilot pitch, Cleartrip's financials hit turbulence. In FY24, the travel portal spent ₹988 crore to earn just ₹97 crore, racking up losses over ₹800 crore—half of it on discounts. Flipkart's 2021 acquisition hasn't paid off, as rivals like MakeMyTrip and Ixigo fly ahead. With new growth head Manjari Singhal, Cleartrip is eyeing hotels, corporate travel, and cabs. But experts say: “Discounts won't fly forever.” Will Cleartrip course-correct or stay grounded? Green Card Setback for Indians The May 2025 US Visa Bulletin brings bad news—EB-5 visas for Indians retrogressed by six months to May 1, 2019, increasing wait times. Other categories remain stuck: EB-2: Jan 2013 EB-3: Slight move to April 2013 EB-4: Still unavailable Blame it on high demand, annual caps, and per-country limits. Experts advise exploring faster tracks like EB1 or NIW—but for many, the American dream is on pause. HDFC Bets Big on Small-Town Homes HDFC Capital is investing ₹1,500 crore in 18 residential projects with Eldeco Group across Tier-II and III cities. Targeting markets like Panipat, Ludhiana, Rishikesh, and Kasauli, the platform eyes ₹11,000 crore in revenue from 10 million sq ft of new housing. “We're bullish on towns near metros,” says CEO Vipul Roongta, citing rising infrastructure and housing demand. Backed by its $4.2 billion housing fund, HDFC is betting that India's real estate boom is heading beyond the metros.

Lately, new breed of millionaire heirs have been dabbling with family offices in India . These are entities that exist solely to manage the fortunes of these ultra-rich families. While these offices have been around in some of the world's biggest financial capitals for a long time now, in India, they are catching on now . What's really interesting is that these single and multi family offices haven't just been popping up in big metro cities, they are also gaining popularity in tier 2 cities like Surat, Ludhiana, Lucknow, Coimbatore and the like. This largely has to do with the growing number of rich people in a lot of smaller cities and towns. A byproduct of this seems to be the rise in family offices. In the last six years alone, the number of family offices in India has shot up from 45 to 300. Some of these function like a seed-stage venture capital firm and invest money to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.Tune in.Daybreak Unwind recommendations for 'favourite translated novels.'Rahel: The Vegetarian by Han King Hangwoman by KR MeeraSnigdha: The Legends of Khasak by OV Vijayan There's a Carnival Today by Indra Bahadur RaiListeners: Ghachar Ghochar by Vivek Shanbag Daybreak is now on WhatsApp at +918971108379. “For personal health, we advocate the benefits of keeping a healthy lifestyle, which includes being physically fit and eating a healthy diet that is a good balance of all nutrients. Likewise, I'm a proponent of keeping a balance in one's investment journey. By balance, I imply that you have to be disciplined, you have to be diversified, patient, and regular in one's investment process...staying healthy is not a one day, one week, or a one-month process, it's a long-term commitment. The same holds true for investments.” Our guest today is Dr. Amit Modgil, a physician and cardiologist with Suman Hospital in Ludhiana. Dr Modgil has nearly 30 years of experience, with specializations in internal medicine, cardiology, diabetes, and thyroid disorders. He has been a prudent investor and has a keen interest in the intersection of finance and health. Further, he has employed his expertise in examining the factors that determine the wellness of these two aspects of life (that are often intertwined!) In this podcast, Dr. Modgil shares his insights on how we can leverage best practices from these two aspects – both personal as well as financial.

The government is keen on rolling out 5G services this year. Some reports say that it wants to launch 5G by the upcoming Independence Day. The decks were cleared for its auction in early May. But will the country get the high-speed network anytime soon? A telecom industry body has now told the government that there will be no business case for roll-out of 5G networks if operators' concern on private captive networks is not addressed. So will it affect the 5G rollout in the country? It is not just the telecom operators who are staring at depleting revenue. Ludhiana's apparel industry, which churns out most of the country's readymade garments, are also in a similar situation. Two months of lockdown in China's Shanghai has brought the industry on its knees. China's lockdown and Russia's war on Ukraine has pushed inflation not just beyond the RBI's tolerance level, but that of people too. The central bank is preparing the markets for aggressive rate hikes in months ahead. While this has already pushed bond yields to their highest level since 2019, experts anticipate further hardening of yields on government securities. Our next report takes a dive into where the bonds and equity markets are headed. We also take a look at investment strategies for the next 3-6 months. Like the income from the markets, taxes are levied on earnings made from sale of residential property too. It is known as capital gains tax. But did you know that in some cases you can save yourself from this tax? Let us know more about it in this episode of the podcast. Watch video

The discussion starts with the parliamentary proceedings and how much attention goes into passing a bill in India. Nitin comments that the only way parliament should decide on passing bills is by some sort of “feat of force like wrestling or tug of war because it has come to that”. “Do people meet up in state legislatures before clearing any bill? No, they are not voicing the concerns,” he says. Apar points to facts. “Only one out of five bills is sent to the standing committee for approval. It's inefficient and can be made better by all means.” Abhinandan compares the legislative procedure with precedents and opens the discussion with the “unhealthy process” that exists. Jayashree adds, “All institutional checks and balances are just for show, when they (BJP) got tired with the show; they got it adjourned.”The discussion then shifts to the anti-conversion bill passed by the Karnataka government and its implications, along with references to the recent attacks on churches, which Abhinandan calls “dog whistles for the cultural agenda of BJP, because this is all they have”. The panel sifts through the governance style and gains made through the same in south India. The conversation moves to the issue of sacrilege in Punjab, the lynching cases and the recent blast in Ludhiana. The panel also talks about a statement by a Madras high court judge on the “duty to laugh”. This and a lot more, only on NL Hafta.Tune in! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Rupinder Kaur grew in up in small town India, in places like Pithoragarh and Wellington, before Dr Manmohan Singh opened the country up to Coca Cola and Clinique shampoo. She is a product of the 1980s, but that's not the only thing that shaped her. Her parents, both in the army, also did. Her mother was a doctor and her father rose to be a general. She herself finished college in St Bede's, Simla, and then came to Delhi to do a post grad degree in psychology. She never finished it, and wonders what life would have been like if she had. Instead, she headed to Allahabad to sit for the SSB, where candidates applying to join the army as officers gradually get weeded out over the course of a week. The sixteenth batch of women officers, she won the gold medal for the best lady cadet, and went on to join the Army Ordnance Corps that to a layperson is all about weapons and ammunition. Rocket launchers interested her the most! Her first posting was in an ammunition depot near Ludhiana, where she was the security officer responsible for everything from rifles to Bofors shells. After six years, she left (in those days women didn't have permanent commission and she didn't see a future here), and joined the corporate world, working across companies like Google and Microsoft.Quickly she realised the corporate life was not for her, and she went to the UK to do a masters degree in Poverty Reduction. Her longest career stint has been in the social sector, with organizations like STiR, UnLtd, and J-Pal, a set up founded by Nobel laureates Abhijeet Banerjee and Ester Duflo. From early in life, so-called alternate systems of healing was something her father dabbled in, taking her to naturopathy centres as early as 1 and half years old!In her early 40s, she realised she needed to revisit naturopathy to develop a deeper connection with her own body. In fact connection is something she talks about frequently, whether with oneself, the community, or with Nature. --The discussion on this episode of the podcast is all about naturopathy and things that Rupinder has experienced as an ex army officer.
