In the 18th century, the Sikh mystic and generalissimo Vadbhag Singh resided peacefully in Jalandhar before being maliciously attacked by Islamic zealots. His lands were ruined, and his religious sanctuaries desecrated, with Vadbhag Singh barely escaping with his life. However, Vadbhag Singh was not one to remain passive. He returned to Jalandhar with a massive force of Khalsa warriors, unleashing an unprecedented wave of violence in retaliation. In today's context, where acts of Beadbi (sacrilege) are occurring frequently, Vadbhag Singh's actions may offer a practical solution to consider.

This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 25th of July and here are today's headlines.Amid heavy rains overnight and persistent downpour, especially in the catchment areas of dams, parts of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad reported flooding this morning. The India Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange alert' for the next two days in the city. Four deaths have so far been reported in the rain-related incidents, including three due to electrocution and one due to a rock fall. The city witnessed three landslides and a wall collapse as confirmed by the Police Commission.Meanwhile, due to torrential rains local train services in Mumbai were disrupted, as heavy waterlogging in many places brought traffic to a standstill. The IMD issued a ‘red alert' for Mumbai and the neighbouring districts of Thane and Raigad. SpiceJet, Air India, and IndiGo also announced potential flight disruptions, while schools and colleges were shut. The debate on the Union Budget 2024-25 is underway in both Houses of the Parliament. Congress MP from Jalandhar, Charanjit Singh Channi said there is an undeclared emergency in the country citing the crisis in Manipur, the plight of farmers, rape of Dalit woman in UP. Channi also raised the issue of the depreciation of the Indian rupee's value and questioned the absence of Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the House.Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication, facial recognition of candidates, and live Artificial Intelligence-based CCTV surveillance are among the measures that the UPSC now plans to introduce to prevent “cheating, fraud, unfair means, and impersonation” during the examinations that it conducts. This comes in the wake of the case of trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar who is facing a UPSC probe for allegedly “faking her identity” and a row over the NEET UG paper leak case.Typhoon Gaemi made landfall in Taiwan, leaving 22 people dead in the Philippines from flooding and landslides, and three in Taiwan, with more than 220 reported injured. The island has seen persistent flooding in low-lying areas, landslides, and damage to homes and shops. Offices and schools in Taiwan were closed for the second consecutive day today and people were urged to stay home and away from the coastline. The island is regularly hit by typhoons and has boosted its warning systems, but its typography, high population density and high-tech economy make it difficult to avoid losses when such storms hit. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Hello, this is your daily dose of news from Onmanorama. Tune in to get updated about the major news stories of the day.
¡Gracias Santi!

India's small and medium businesses had only begun to recover from the economic impact of the pandemic followed by the geopolitical crisis, but the early onset of summer and recurring heat waves across north India paralysed them again. Demand for electricity shot up beyond expectations, leading to a nationwide power crisis. With coal stocks at a critical level at many thermal power plants, states found themselves in a desperate situation, resorting to unscheduled power cuts. While the bigger, urban businesses are managing to sail through the crisis, small businesses and residents are not as fortunate. A series of ground reports by Business Standard spanning across northern and western India chronicles the plight of MSMEs in Surat, Manesar, Kanpur and Jalandhar, where power shortages made matters worse for those already struggling with production lags and high prices of raw materials. Haryana's Manesar has been experiencing regular power cuts in industrial areas, forcing major industries to turn to diesel generator sets for backup. With soaring fuel prices, even major automakers like Maruti Suzuki are feeling the heat. Surat, Gujarat's textile hub, is facing a labour shortage as many workers have gone back to their hometowns. To make the situation worse, power cuts in the city have brought down production by 10 per cent, say industry estimates. Ashish Gujarati of Southern Gujarat Chamber Of Commerce and Industry, Surat, shares the concerns of small businesses. For many small businesses, April is the time for peak production. But power outages have brought their dreams crashing down. While most are struggling with deep losses, some are being forced to shut down. Jitubhai Vakharia, President, South Gujarat Textile Processors' Association, Surat says, "The input cost of coal has almost doubled, the whole textile industry is dependent on imported coal. Since the Russia-Ukraine war, the availability of coal has reduced and its price has shot up." He adds, "The cost of dyes and chemicals has increased by 25 to 40 per cent and the price of some chemicals like sodium hydrosulfite of soda or discharging agent like safolite have increased by 140 to 150 per cent. Thus, the input costs have increased, and increasing prices is difficult for us as the demand is already low in the market." Amid coal shortage, the textile industry, though largely resilient against power cuts, is also struggling with rising prices of coal. A near-doubling in the cost of imported coal is impacting value chains. The situation is no better for leather businesses in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur. Here, power has to be supplied non-stop, since any disruption could cause a loss of the raw hide. With no alternative, anyone who can afford it has had to move to diesel gen-sets, as they stare at rising energy costs. Speaking to Business Standard, Nayyar Jamal, Member, UP Tanners' Association, Kanpur says, "There's no declared power shortage in this area but we experience power outages 5 to 6 times a day. This leads to a lot of problems, as we have a continuous operation process which involves the use of chemicals. So, during sudden power cuts, our material gets wasted. The cost of electricity for industries is highest in Uttar Pradesh. As such, competitive electricity rates will help us improve production." Let's turn to Jalandhar, Punjab's export hub. The industries here are also struggling with major power shortages and are worried that the situation could deteriorate in the coming months. Businesses outside the industrial belt have regularly been subjected to unscheduled power cuts, and the heavy machinery-centric operations are turning unsustainable to run even on power backups for most MSMEs. Indian Cricketer and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh started out as a young kid from Jalandhar, with big dreams, an abundance of passion, a love for fun and had a huge work-ethic. His international career spanned 18 years, during which time he became one of the world's leading wicket takers. Bhajji the cricketer was a warrior and fierce competitor. He is someone who chooses authenticity about political correctness, and being outspoken and passionate above mute diplomacy. This mix, along with his high work ethic, huge heart, love of having fun, and an unbridled passion, both on and off the field, saw him being one of crickets genuinely successful and colorful personalities. His career spanned highs and lows, and his fighting spirit saw him rise again and again after getting dropped, injury, surgery, having his bowling action repeatedly questioned and falling foul of controversy. In this chat, Bhajji is characteristically outspoken, unapologetic and whole-hearted as he speaks about his career, his philosophy on performance, on life, and his passion and current dedication to helping feed, house and uplift others. He is direct, authentic, funny and pulls at heart-strings. At one point, he rendered me quite emotional, which was no surprise - he doesn't do dull. A version of this essay has been published by firstpost.com at https://www.firstpost.com/world/human-rights-all-humans-are-equal-but-some-are-more-equal-than-others-10340451.htmlThis story has already receded into the background, but it was quite startling when it took place recently: a Pakistani-Briton named Malik Faisal Akram held four Jews hostage in a Texas synagogue. He was demanding the release of a Pakistani woman, Aafia Siddiqui, sentenced to an 86 year prison term in the US. Why she is important is a good question, but that need not detain us here. What is intriguing is the fact that Akram was apparently simply shot by a US military or police sharpshooter. The reports were bland, and they just said that the hostages had been freed unharmed; the fate of their captor was barely mentioned at all: it was as though he had been executed, as a matter of course, and that was the proper and normal thing to do.Without condoning the man, one can look at the interesting implications. Akram may indeed have been a dangerous and unstable armed terrorist, but he was, after all, a foreign national. And he had not actually harmed anybody physically. Aren’t there norms about citizens of friendly powers? Can they be arbitrarily shot dead? Was the UK embassy involved? Could the police have used a tranquilizer dart instead? Why is nobody asking questions, but accepting it as a fait accompli?True, the human rights of a terrorist or an insurgent are no greater than those of an average citizen, but shouldn’t there be some standard operating procedures?I remember other incidents in the US where the use of massive force by federal or local authorities was somehow deemed appropriate, with few questions asked. One was the devastating attack in April 1993 on a compound in Waco, Texas, where a religious cult called the Branch Davidians were holed up. 76 members of the group were burned to death after a 51-day siege. In 1985, the radical (black?) group MOVE, fortified in a Philadelphia house, was attacked by city authorities with a helicopter gunship, and a fire was allowed to burn out of control, killing 11 people, and burning down 61 houses in the neighborhood. A subsequent court ruling held that constitutional rights were violated, and excessive force was used. The point is that in some cases violations of human rights (even of terrorists or outlaws) are condoned, but in other cases they are magnified, blown up, and used as narrative-building weapons. The judiciary is sometimes blamed, although in some cases the executive may be at fault for not making a good case, or any case at all, either deliberately or through incompetence. Thanks for reading Shadow Warrior! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. For example, there is the cause celebre of Ishrat Jahan. This woman from Mumbai was found traveling to Gujarat with her boss Javed Sheikh, and two others including a Pakistani, and they were shot by the police. It is alleged (including in testimony from David Headley, Pakistani-American kingpin of the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai) that she was an LeT operative, and that the group were planning to assassinate then-CM Narendra Modi. There was an international uproar protesting her innocence. So why are Ishrat Jahan’s human rights so much greater than those of Malik Faisal Akram? The answer, of course, is narrative. Information warfare is manufactured on demand. Thank you for reading Shadow Warrior. This post is public so feel free to share it.There has been a series of other human rights incidents in the recent past in India that show how dysfunctional the system is, and how empty the rhetoric is. Four years ago, a starving tribal named Madhu in Kerala was caught stealing a small amount of rice. A group of young men videotaped him being tied up, humiliated, and then beaten to death. His hearing came up recently, and the prosecution did not appear at all in court!Dilbar Negi, a young man in Delhi, was brutalized and slaughtered during the Delhi riots in 2020. His limbs were cut off, and he was burned alive. Recently, a high-powered lawyer got bail for six of the accused in Delhi High Court. Bishop Franco Mulakkal of Jalandhar was accused of raping a nun 13 times at a convent in Kerala. Several nuns braved the wrath of the church to bring out stories about oppression and (sexual) abuse in nunneries. Last week, the district court rejected in toto the evidence presented against him, and cleared him of all charges. A terrified young commuter, Sowmya, was chased around the empty woman’s coach in a train, pushed off the train, raped on the tracks, and had her head bashed in with a stone by one-armed beggar Charly Thomas in Kerala in 2011. The fast-track court delivered a death sentence in the rape-murder. But on appeal to the Supreme Court, two things happened: the prosecution was not able to present a water-tight case, and the ‘beggar’ Charly was able to hire an expensive, hot-shot lawyer. The result? The death sentence was commuted to ‘life’, which means that he will be released after 14 years. Just last week, retired BSF jawan Bhagwat Nishad shot and killed Dilshad Hussain in court premises in Gorakhpur, UP. It is alleged that Nishad’s minor daughter had been abducted and raped by Hussain, and though there was a POCSO case, the accused was out on bail. There is the currently sensational case of Lavanya, a 17-year-old student of a residential Christian school in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. A top student, she was allegedly repeatedly coerced to convert and even to become a nun. When she refused, she was punished, mentally tortured, and forced to do menial tasks like cleaning toilets. She consumed poison, and in her dying declaration from hospital available on video, she clearly implicates those who were torturing her. Instead of taking action against the accused, the instincts of the state apparatus and the media were to cover things up, and to question the credibility of Lavanya and her parents. The police authorities dismissed the whole incident, and it took a consistent grassroots movement to prevent this sad, but not unusual, incident from being swept under the carpet. All this leads to the disheartening question: do some people have human rights, while others don’t? Are governments not constitutionally required to treat the powerful and the powerless the same when investigating criminal offenses and human rights violations? Why does it appear that in some cases the executive is content to make a mockery of the judicial proceedings? Are people gaming the judiciary by filing pointless PILs, which well-connected lawyers can ram through the system? Why, for instance, does the Supreme Court refuse to hear the case of the ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Hindus in 1990, but is willing to take up the case of Rohingyas, who technically have no locus standi in India, being illegal aliens? India is also not a signatory to non-refoulement treaties, and is perfectly at liberty to send them back to Myanmar.Who pays for all the expensive lawyers? There is a pattern whereby unseen forces pump in money to hire the best lawyers (sometimes hiding it under ‘crowdfunding’) to get judgments that may have propaganda and other value for them. Unfortunately, despite the soaring rhetoric about human rights, the reality is that unless your agenda happens to coincide with that of narrative-builders, you will get no traction. Indian cricketers, in an embarrassing display of cluelessness and dhimmitude, ‘took the knee’ for Black Lives Matter. That they would never do the same for Kashmiri Hindu Lives Matter tells the whole story in a nutshell. 1240 words, 27 Jan 2022 This is a public episode. This week we travel to India and look at the complex interactions between the Irish and India, all through the lens of a remarkable (but admittedly inconsequential) mutiny on June 28th 1920 in Jalandhar, India. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On 28 June 1920, five men from C Company of the 1st Battalion of the Connaught Rangers led a mutiny in Jalandhar, Punjab, in protest against martial law in Ireland. Following their surrender a few days later, 88 mutineers were court-martialled, of whom 77 were imprisoned; the leader, James Daly, was executed. The imprisoned mutineers were released in 1923; they returned to Ireland, and in 1936 were granted State pensions. In 1970 the remains of James Daly and two other mutineers were repatriated from India. Listen to Tommy Graham, editor of History Ireland, discuss the complex web of issues arising from these events and their commemoration both in 1970 and today with John Gibney, Cécile Gordon, Brian Hanley and Kate O'Malley.
