The Titans improved to 2-0 in the preseason with Saturday's 16-15 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, and they did so with the help of an unlikely hero. Rookie kicker Brayden Narveson made three-fourth-quarter field goals, including a 59-yarder that gave Tennessee its first lead and a 46-yard game-winner as time expired. Even so, the best he can hope is that it was enough for another team to want to sign him. ... Malik Willis was the Titans' starting quarterback against the Seahawks, but in the critical moments of that contest it was Mason Rudolph under center. That probably says all there is to say about whether Willis has any chance to be Will Levis' backup. ... While the issue at backup quarterback might be settled, other spots are up for grabs. Perhaps the most interesting battle is between Hassan Haskins and Julius Chestnut for the final running back spot. Others like linebacker Chance Campbell, wide receiver Jha'Quan Jackson, outside linebacker Jaylen Harrell and tight end David Martin-Robinson are among those who have found ways to stand out and have made strong cases to make the final roster. ... This week, Netflix premiered its latest episode of Untold, this one on former Titans quarterback Steve McNair and the circumstances surrounding his murder. The program did not reveal any new information except for one notable item -- a long-sought revelation from former coach Jeff Fisher. McNair's college glory days at Alcorn State also were detailed this week in an ESPN.com story. ... The starters will be back in action Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, and there are reasons to think it will be a beneficial performance in the final prep for the regular season.
Amie Wells and Mike Keith catch up with Titans linebacker Chance Campbell to talk about his standout performance against the 49ers. That and more on this edition of The OTP presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There were plenty of notable decisions the Tennessee Titans made when they cut their roster to 53 players. Among them: all three quarterbacks (Ryan Tannehill, Malik Willis and rookie Will Levis) made it; two rookies who grew up in or around Nashville (wide receiver Colton Dowell and safety Matthew Jackson) made it: and two recent draft picks (wide receiver Racey McMath and linebacker Chance Campbell) did not. ... The first post-cut practice included the rapid return from injury by wide receiver Treylon Burks. Perhaps even more surprising was offensive lineman Dillon Radunz's removal from the Physically Unable to Perform list. Burks' return provides some much-needed certainty for the offense as it prepares for the opener at New Orleans. What Radunz can add -- or will be asked to add -- is not nearly as clear. ... The Titans changed kickers again when they traded a 2025 seventh-round pick to New England for 38-year-old veteran Nick Folk, who becomes the latest long-in-the-tooth kicker to get the job with Tennessee. Cade York, a 2022 draft pick by Cleveland, was added to the practice squad as either insurance against age catching up to Folk or as the long-term solution at the position -- or both. ... The decision to keep three quarterbacks was not a given at the start of the preseason. Of the three, Willis likely helped himself the most in the exhibition games. But did he do enough to be the No. 2 guy when the regular season starts? ... Speaking of the quarterbacks, what was the point of Tannehill handing off three times before he went to the bench in the preseason finale against New England? ... If there is one noticeable change with general manager Ran Carthon now in charge, it is an apparent willingness to roll the dice with players who did not face elite competition in college. ... If there are areas of concern, they appear to be the offensive line and the last line of defense, aka the safeties, or at least the depth players at that spot.
On today's episode, host Easton Freeze and producer JT dive into the Titans' first preseason action of the year: Easton reminds us of some perspective on where we are in the preseason process (2:50) Loser: Depth (5:16) Winner: Tyjae Spears (11:50) Loser: Ball Security (20:23) Winner: Malik Willis (26:09) Loser: Will Levis (29:50) Winner: Eric Garror, Chance Campbell & Mike Brown (36:30) Loser: Josh Whyle (38:39) Winner: Caleb Shudak (39:46) Other notes from the game, including numbers on the OL and closing the book on Head Coach Terrell Williams (43:00) The News with Producer JT (46:38)
The word "collaboration" was used often during Ran Carthon's introductory press conference as Tennessee Titans general manager. Whether it was in the way he talked about working with coach Mike Vrabel, his unscheduled visit with the local media ahead of that event or several other things, there was nothing to suggest that the use of that word is just lip service. Carthon gave the impression that his experience, his ego and his personal expectations are all secondary to the success of the team. ... Tight ends coach Luke Steckel will interview with the Los Angeles Chargers in that team's search for an offensive coordinator. Having been with Tennessee for a decade and a position coach for two years, the son of former Titans offensive coordinator Les Steckel has not been considered a factor in the search for Todd Downing's replacement. Should people have been looking at this guy, and is Mike Vrabel doing exactly that? ... The Titans' 2022 draft class remains a work in progress with the likes of Malik Willis (third round), Treylon Burks (first round) and Chance Campbell (sixth round) having had little or no opportunity to show what they can do. But the contributions of Roger McCreary (second round), Nicholas Petit-Frere (third round) and Chig Okonkwo (fourth round) along with those of undrafted players such as record-setting punter Ryan Stonehouse, cornerback Tre Avery and linebacker Jack Gibbens made Tennessee's rookie class one of the best this season, based on an ESPN analysis that used metrics from two advanced statistics sites. ... Finally, the hosts each pick a statistic that best sums up the Titans' 2022 season.
