Daily DLP: Breaking down Lions rookie QB Luke Altmyer Detroit Lions Podcast

A focused look at QB3 The Detroit Lions Podcast zeroed in on undrafted rookie quarterback Luke Altmyer. The Illinois product brings a steady profile that fits what Detroit asks from its quarterbacks. His case touches roster mechanics, scheme continuity, and how the Lions want to survive a Sunday if Jared Goff misses snaps. The first puzzle is numbers. The Lions have not typically carried three quarterbacks on the 53. Recent practice has leaned on the practice squad and the emergency quarterback elevation. That path likely remains in play. Teddy Bridgewater sits as QB2 for 2026. His last outing in a Lions uniform was rough, but his value is clear. He is smart, efficient, and comfortable in the pocket in the way Goff is. That sets the bar for Altmyer. If QB3 mirrors the starter's operation, the offense changes less when called upon. Altmyer's traits fit the offense Altmyer's game wins with anticipation, accuracy, touch, and a willingness to stand in and deliver. He has extensive experience in a pro-style offense and makes NFL anticipatory throws. He protects the ball and rarely puts it at risk when structure holds. The arm is not dynamic and he is undersized. The release is lower and slower than ideal. He must protect himself better. He absorbed some massive hits at Illinois, a byproduct of patience while routes developed behind an uneven offensive line. Those are teachable survival skills. There is meaningful overlap with Goff's profile. Altmyer processes quickly, shows poise, and works the pocket with calm urgency. He can hit the throws the system demands and maintain accuracy on the move. He posted seven game-winning drives late in games and finished second in program history in wins and touchdown passes. He is a cleaner operator than a playmaker, which is exactly what the Lions ask from their quarterbacks. How he sticks in Detroit Altmyer expected to be drafted and carries a clear chip on his shoulder. Detroit liked the makeup. Dan Campbell praised his retention and daily improvement. The staff highlighted his command of calls, shifts, and motions, and that he is not overwhelmed by install. Altmaier chose Detroit in part to work with Drew Petzing and after a positive Senior Bowl week with Marcus Tuiasosopo. The near-term lane is obvious. QB3 via the practice squad with elevations as needed. Win preseason reps by running the offense cleanly. Protect himself. Keep the ball safe. If he meets those checkpoints, he has a real chance to stick in 2026 and position himself for QB2 in 2027. For a Detroit Lions roster built on clarity and cohesion, Altmaier's profile makes football sense. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #lukealtmyer #teddybridgewater #jaredgoff #qb3 #scoutingreport #lionsotas Learn more about your ad choices. 06/09/26 Hour 1: Illinois Football lands 3-Star Quarterback Sladen Shack - what you need to know; Cardinals vs Mets and Cubs vs Rockies Preview Illinois football added another piece to its future quarterback room as three-star 2027 signal caller Sladen Shack from Brandon, Mississippi announced his commitment to Bret Bielema and the Illini. The 6-foot-1, 211-pound quarterback chose Illinois over offers from Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, UConn, South Florida, East Carolina and others. Shack is rated as one of Mississippi's top prospects in the Class of 2027 and becomes Illinois' quarterback commitment for the cycle after the staff reset its recruiting board this spring. Illinois coaches Art Sitkowski and Barry Lunney Jr. prioritized Shack following strong evaluations and an official visit to Champaign. The commitment continues Illinois' recent pipeline into Mississippi, following the success of former Illini quarterback Luke Altmyer.  Then we shift to baseball as the Cardinals open a three-game series against the Mets at Citi Field. St. Louis enters the matchup at 35-28 and currently holds the top National League Wild Card position, while New York sits at 29-36 but comes home with momentum after winning series against both San Diego and Seattle. Young stars Jordan Walker and JJ Wetherholt continue to fuel the Cardinals' surprising season, while the Mets welcome catcher Francisco Alvarez back from the injured list ahead of the series opener. The matchup features two teams trying to strengthen their playoff positioning in a crowded National League race. Meanwhile, the Cubs begin a six-game season series with the Rockies at Coors Field. Chicago enters the series looking to gain ground after an inconsistent stretch, while Colorado continues rebuilding after a difficult 2025 campaign. The probable pitching matchups feature Colin Rea vs. Tomoyuki Sugano, Shota Imanaga vs. Michael Lorenzen, and Edward Cabrera vs. Ryan Feltner. Despite Colorado's struggles, Coors Field has historically been a difficult place for the Cubs, making this an important road test as they try to stay in the National League playoff picture.

Rich, Matt, and Garret kick off their 2026 rookie prospect reviews with the position that breaks the most hearts every year: quarterbacks. The group emphasizes how much draft capital and landing spot shape outcomes, but also why weak classes can create value pockets in Superflex, especially if a QB can buy fantasy points with rushing. They start at the top with Fernando Mendoza, presenting him as the cleanest profile in the class and the safest Superflex bet. The discussion centers on accuracy, ball placement, decision-making, and leadership, with a debate on ceiling. One view sees him living as a reliable QB1 or high-end QB2 type. The other argues he can climb higher if the team build around him hits and the offense keeps evolving. Next up is Garrett Nussmeier, framed as a tricky evaluation because the 2025 tape looks heavily impacted by injury, while the 2024 tape shows a much more live arm and a more confident, pro-style passer. The group keeps coming back to one key point: draft capital will tell the story. If he lands in the right range, he becomes a real swing worth taking in Superflex rookie drafts. They move into Drew Allar as the “looks the part” quarterback that coaches will want to develop. The upside is obvious in the frame and arm talent, but the concerns show up when the pocket collapses and the processing speeds up. The consensus is that he needs time, structure, and the right coaching situation to see if the tools translate. They then cover Diego Pavia, giving credit for competitiveness and production, but making it clear the size limitation creates a massive barrier to draft capital and long-term opportunity. For fantasy purposes, they frame it as the kind of player where any real playing-time window would likely be the sell window. They also hit Taylen Green as the ultimate “tools vs quarterbacking” prospect. The athletic profile is wild and the rushing upside creates fantasy intrigue, but the concerns are about processing, mechanics, and whether he can consistently function as an NFL passer. The takeaway is that he is a pure swing pick, not a stable bet. They close with Luke Altmyer, who gets credit for playing on time, protecting the ball, and being coach-friendly, but is framed as a capped-ceiling profile for fantasy. Even if he sticks in the NFL as a backup type, the upside is limited compared to the quarterbacks who can generate fantasy points with rushing. Start Using the Film Room Today! As the Jets defensive coordinator search continues, Connor Hughes of SNY had an interesting tidbit on his Jets Final Drive podcast with Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.  According to Hughes, two “big name” candidates have told the Jets that they have no interest in interviewing to work for the Jets at this time.  Rosenblatt would add that his understanding is that it’s “more than two”. https://api.spreaker.com/v2/episodes/69540952/download.mp3 But while the search may not be going as well as hoped, the pair claims that well-known coordinator Wink Martindale has emerged as the current favorite to land the job.  Martindale coached in the NFL from 2004-20023, spending seven of those seasons as a defensive coordinator for the Broncos, Ravens, and Giants.  He has spent the past twos seasons in the college ranks for Michigan. As far as the offensive side of the football, particularly at quarterback, the Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL is just around the corner, and there will be six QB’s on hand. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU: Viewed as a lock to go in round 1 this year, Nussmeier had a disastrous year that how has him pegged as a mid-round pick.  Some speculate he was playing with an injury in 2025, so this will be a chance for the signal caller to raise his stock once again in a weak quarterback class. Taylen Green, Arkansas: The 6′ 6” Green has elite athletic traits but fell flat for much of 2025.  After starting off hot with ten touchdown passes in his first two games, Green would throw just nine more over the course of the remainder of the season.  Mobile will be a chance for Green to work with a more talented group of receivers but will have to show improved accuracy if he hopes to impress scouts. Sawyer Robertson, Baylor: Robertson is an aggressive downfield thrower who shows elite ball placement deep down the field and likes to find man coverage and air it out when opponents blitz.  He’s also more than willing to hang in the pocket do deliver a deep shot but will offer less than any other QB in mobile as a runner. Love the poise/awareness we see from @BUFootball QB Sawyer Robertson. Looks like a sure sack before he pulls away, finds RB Caden Knighten over the middle and pulls trigger for big gain instead of sack or throw away. Big opportunity to boost his stock at the @seniorbowl. pic.twitter.com/Duovst0cZk — Glenn Naughton (@JetsPicks) January 22, 2026 Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt: An underdog who always seems to find a way to pull out a win or keep Vandy competitive.  There are serious concerns regarding his height as some suggest he’ll check in at 5′ 9” in Indy.  This would be a major blow for a QB who likely irked some teams with his social media meltdown after not winning the Heisman. Luke Altmyer, Illinois: A guy who does a lot of things well but nothing exceptional.  Good arm strength and athleticism for Altmyer who logged 44 TD’s to just 11 INT’s over his final two college seasons.  A ‘steady Eddie” type who could be a day 3 pick and potential long-term backup. Cole Payton, NDSU: If the New Orleans Saints feel it’s time to move on from Taysom Hill, Payton could be the perfect replacement.  His speed and athleticism is beyond impressive and we expect him to run the fastest 40 among QB’s in Indy.  This isn’t to say he can’t wow you with an eye popping throw from time to time, but no matter the plan for Payton, he’s likely a multi-year project. Minnesota came out swinging, but once Ohio State's defense locked things down in the red zone, the rest of Saturday night belonged to the Buckeyes. The defense was stifling; Carnell Tate and Julian Sayin went off; and Jeremiah Smith, Max Klare, and Bo Jackson all had solid games. Ryan Day was also able to get plenty of depth players a few snaps in the fourth quarter. We look back at the big plays, moments, and players from Ohio State's 42-3 win over the Golden Gophers, check on our picks to click to see how they performed, and review our game predictions from last week to see how close we were. (We were pretty close!)After our Ohio State-Minnesota rewind, we looked around the rest of the Big Ten to see how other teams made out in Week 6. Penn State had a bad weekend and Washington nearly did as well, having to come a long way back in the fourth quarter to win at Maryland. Illinois won big, Wisconsin put up a fight for a while but simply couldn't score points in Ann Arbor. Michigan State couldn't get stops in Lincoln, and the Spartans had a Sparty No! moment. We also looked ahead to the matchups this weekend, and aside from Ohio State's trip to Champaign, we'll be keeping an eye on Oregon-Indiana.Finally, we previewed the Illibuck game coming up Saturday at noon. The Fighting Illini are a formidable opponent, especially at home, and they have an offense that can test Matt Patricia's defense. We gave you the Illini players to watch and discussed the matchup. We also selected our picks to click for the Buckeyes at Illinois and made our predictions for what the final score will be after a hard-fought game at Memorial Stadium this weekend. We would love to hear from you, so please send us an email at silverbulletspod@gmail.com. Minnesota came out of the gate hot but couldn't sustain anything after its opening drive. The Buckeyes cruised.24:34 - UCLA stunned Penn State with an offensive explosion against Jim Knowles' defense. Michigan, Illinois, Washington, Nebraska, and Northwestern (the latter in non-conference play) joined the Buckeyes as winners over the weekend.52:28 - We look ahead to Luke Altmyer and his command of a versatile Illinois offense, as the Buckeye secondary will be put to the test on the road Saturday.
