Jon Blau has been in Baton Rouge for two months. It feels more like 10 months. Seems there's a new controversy every other day involving Lane Kiffin and LSU football. Blau's job is to follow it all in his new position covering Kiffin's program for The Advocate/Times-Picayune newspaper. Blau, who spent the previous five years covering Clemson for The Post and Courier of Charleston, shares why he decided to make the move. He also shares that he hasn't had an introduction to Kiffin because Kiffin isn't much for one-on-one conversations. Quite the change-up from the always approachable Dabo Swinney. Blau has spent years covering games in one Death Valley. This Saturday he'll get his first experience in LSU's Death Valley when Kiffin plays host to Swinney.
Swanny dives into the latest details surrounding Vic Burley's arrest and wonders whether the Clemson defensive tackle can turn an ugly situation into the wake-up call his career desperately needs.Plus, the Pigskin Prognostication series rolls on with Oregon, Texas and TCU as Week 1 finally arrives. Then William Qualkinbush joins the show to discuss Burley and the increasingly bizarre state of college football eligibility before Swanny turns his attention toward Lane Kiffin and LSU. With the Tigers continuing to pursue players who had already moved into the professional ranks, Swanny has seen enough.Just because the courts say you can do something doesn't mean you should. And after hearing Kiffin explain LSU's approach, Swanny concludes the LSU head coach is doing exactly what your parents might have called it years ago: showing his butt.
Lane Kiffin and LSU are at the center of the latest college football controversy after the SEC announced potential penalties for programs that attempt to bring NFL players back to the college level. Charlie Burris and Zach Ragan break down the entire situation on the Big Orange Podcast, including why the SEC finally decided to take action, why Lane Kiffin's argument has created so much controversy and what this means for the future of college football. The biggest question facing the sport: How far are teams willing to go to build their rosters? After recent eligibility changes opened the door for some former college players who entered the NFL Draft process to potentially return, programs began exploring whether NFL players could come back to college football. The SEC responded by creating significant penalties for schools that attempt to make that move, including potential suspensions and financial punishments. Charlie and Zach explain why targeting coaches and schools instead of players is the only realistic way to enforce these rules. Players wanting another opportunity makes sense but allowing programs to continuously bring back NFL-level talent would fundamentally change roster construction across college football. And naturally, Lane Kiffin is right in the middle of the controversy. The guys discuss why Kiffin's argument that “someone else will do it” doesn't hold up, why LSU's situation has become the center of attention and why this controversy says a lot about the current state of college football. Joe and the guys react to LSU head coach Lane Kiffin signing a player recently cut by the Cleveland Browns, with Kiffin saying another college program would have picked him up if LSU didn't. Joe agrees with Kiffin's assessment and jokes that college football now has three major ways to build a roster: high school recruiting, the transfer portal and players getting cut from NFL teams. The guys also discuss how the explosion of money in college football has completely changed the way programs acquire talent.
John Lund dives into the latest news and updates on the NFL, including the Jed York situation and the potential implications for the 49ers. We'll also explore the Padres' new ownership and the impact it could have on the team's spending habits. We discuss the recent comments from Lane Kiffin, the LSU head coach, on the topic of players returning to college football after being cut from the NFL. Kiffin's explanation has sparked a heated debate, with some arguing that it's a way for players to get a second chance, while others see it as a loophole. Finally, John also touches on the Dodgers' potential sale and the impact it could have on the team's future.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Alabama Crimson Tide have their starting quarterback — and it's Keelon Russell. The former five-star recruit beat out senior Austin Mack during fall camp and will take over an Alabama offense that lost Ty Simpson to the NFL Draft. Russell arrived in Tuscaloosa as ESPN's No. 2 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class and flashed his potential during Alabama's A-Day game with 240 passing yards and four touchdowns. What should Alabama fans expect from Russell as QB1? What former Crimson Tide quarterback does his game remind us of? And how high is the ceiling for Kalen DeBoer's Alabama offense with Russell behind center? We also dive into several huge stories around the SEC:
Barstool Sports' T-Bob Hebert joins The Next Round for a wide-ranging conversation on two of the biggest storylines in the SEC: Is Alabama Football starting to decline, and what does Lane Kiffin have to accomplish in Year 1 at LSU for the season to be considered a success? T-Bob breaks down the state of the Alabama Crimson Tide, whether the program is still operating at a championship level, and how expectations in Tuscaloosa have changed in the post-Nick Saban era. Then the conversation turns to LSU Football and Lane Kiffin. With enormous expectations surrounding Kiffin's first season in Baton Rouge, what is the realistic standard for success? Does LSU need to make the College Football Playoff immediately? Is competing for an SEC Championship the expectation? And how much pressure is there on Kiffin to prove that LSU can once again become one of college football's elite programs? We also dive into the Jayden Daniels No. 5 jersey controversy at LSU and the drama surrounding one of the most recognizable numbers in recent Tigers history. What does the situation say about LSU, its former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, and the way Lane Kiffin is handling his new program? T-Bob gives his perspective on Lane Kiffin, LSU, Jayden Daniels, Alabama, the SEC, the College Football Playoff race, and what could be ahead for two of the conference's biggest brands in the 2026 college football season. If you're an LSU Tigers fan, Alabama Crimson Tide fan, SEC football fan, or college football fan, you won't want to miss this conversation.
In today's edition of The Six, Connor Nute and Nick Frazier discuss whether or not they're concerned about the Titans' secondary after the team's joint practice vs San Francisco, Mike Clay's ranking of the Titans WR room, and how much credit Lane Kiffin deserves for Trinidad Chambliss' success at Ole Miss. Who are college football's top 25 coaches? USA TODAY recently released its rankings, and, in a bit of a stunning development, Tennessee's Josh Heupel was nearly left off the list entirely. He checked in at No. 24. Hey, don't blame us. On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams examine the case for Heupel being the SEC's most underrated coach. Toppmeyer had a ballot in USA TODAY's coach-ranking project. He discloses where he ranked Heupel and explains his surprise that his colleagues view Heupel so differently. He also offers another SEC coach he believes is underrated in the USA TODAY list. Adams agrees with Toppmeyer that Heupel is vastly underrated in this USA TODAY pecking order, but Adams lightly pushes back on where Toppmeyer ranked Lane Kiffin. Adams would've voted Kiffin a little bit higher than his cohost did, but Adams didn't get a vote. Adams tasks Toppmeyer with securing him a ballot for the vote in 2027.

The guys react to Lane Kiffin's comments about recruiting in Mississippi, the challenges tied to history, perception, and program identity, and how his time at Ole Miss changed the Rebels' national profile before his move to LSU. They also discuss Kiffin's career as one of college football's most fascinating coaches — a proven winner with a controversial past and massive expectations in Baton Rouge. Jake Coker also weighs in on Steve Sarkisian's “basket weaving” comments, the reality of academics in college football recruiting, and his own experience graduating from Florida State in three years while balancing life as a quarterback. The conversation then shifts to Alabama football, where Coker and Gillispie discuss why the Crimson Tide brand remains bigger than any one coach, even Nick Saban. They explain why Kalen DeBoer's professional, business-like approach could fit perfectly in Tuscaloosa, why his quarterback recruiting matters, and why Ty Simpson's intelligence and accuracy could be key for Alabama's future. Plus, the guys break down major NCAA rule changes, including the new targeting suspension policy and the rare fair catch free kick/field goal rule that could create wild end-of-game moments. Jake Coker and Mick Gillespie are back with a wild mix of college football talk, competitive eating stories, NIL drama and celebrity encounters. Mick shares the unbelievable story of officiating a bologna-eating contest where Joey Chestnut crushed 16 pounds of bologna in eight minutes to set a new world record. The guys also revisit Chestnut's rivalry with Kobayashi, including Joey's dominant 83-66 win in their 2024 Netflix showdown. Then the conversation shifts to college football, where Alabama's win total is getting attention. MGM has the Crimson Tide set at 8.5 wins, but is that too low for Kalen DeBoer's team — or realistic with Georgia, Tennessee, LSU and a brutal SEC schedule ahead? Jake and Mick also discuss Alabama landing four-star linebacker Kenneth Simon II, the positive buzz around Kane Wommack's defense, and what Jake is hearing through the grapevine about the Crimson Tide. Plus, the guys break down Lane Kiffin's Vanity Fair comments on Ole Miss, his move to LSU, the pressure inside Baton Rouge and whether LSU's NIL machine can help Kiffin finally challenge Alabama at the top of the SEC. Also on the show: Mick's Tim Burchett story, UFO disclosure talk, the cutthroat NIL landscape, schools struggling to meet financial guarantees and Arkansas cutting its men's and women's tennis programs. Topics include: Alabama Football, Kalen DeBoer, Kane Wommack, Lane Kiffin, LSU Football, Ole Miss, Joey Chestnut, Kobayashi, Tim Burchett, NIL, SEC Football, Arkansas athletics cuts and more. #AlabamaFootball #secfootball #collegefootball #cfb #RollTide #JakeCoker #LaneKiffin #LSUFootball #JoeyChestnut #SECFootball #CollegeFootball #NIL #TheNextRound SUBSCRIBE: @NextRoundLive - / @nextroundlive FOLLOW TNR ON SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/show/7zlofzLZht7dYxjNcBNpWN FOLLOW TNR ON APPLE PODCASTS: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-next-round/id1797862560 WEBSITE: https://nextroundlive.com/ MOBILE APP: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/the-next-round/id1580807480 SHOP THE NEXT ROUND STORE: https://nextround.store/ Like TNR on Facebook: / nextroundlive Follow TNR on Twitter: / nextroundlive Follow TNR on Instagram: / nextroundlive Follow everyone from the show on Twitter: Jim Dunaway: / jimdunaway Ryan Brown: / ryanbrownlive Lance Taylor: / thelancetaylor Scott Forester: / scottforestertv Tyler Johns: /TylerJohnsTNR Sponsor the show: sales@nextroundlive.com Learn more about your ad choices.
