Herbert threw for a touchdown and ran for one, and the Chargers had seven sacks in their third straight victory, 27-17 over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The Chargers are 6-3 — their best start since going 7-2 in 2018 — and have won four of five to surpass last season's victory total. “A complete, total team win. When you look at the offense, the drives that we put together ... tough, gritty type of conversions on third down and fourth down,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “They're playing lights out on the defensive side. And then special teams, another big return by our punt return unit.” Herbert completed 14 of 18 passes for 164 yards and had 32 yards rushing. He is the seventh quarterback since the NFL-AFL merger, and the first since Philip Rivers in 2018, to have a passer rating of at least 90 in each of the first nine games of the season. The defense — which is allowing a league-low 13.1 points per game — is the fourth since 1990 and the first since the 2013 Kansas City Chiefs to allow 20 or fewer points in each of its first nine games. “Rush and coverage. We have some of the best rushers in the league and that allows us to make plays,” safety Derwin James said. The Titans (2-7) came in with the NFL's top-ranked defense overall and against the pass but forced Los Angeles to go three-and-out only twice in nine possessions. Calvin Ridley scored both of Tennessee's touchdowns and had five catches for 84 yards. Will Levis, who missed the last three games with a shoulder injury, was 18 of 23 for 175 yards, but the sacks limited his effectiveness. “It was a nice start. It was cool to get the ball downfield and get that shot dialed up, something we've been waiting on," Levis said. "Second half, I think for me personally, a couple situations where I could have just got the ball out of my hands earlier, help the line with pressure." Herbert gave the Chargers a 13-7 lead with 1:55 remaining in the first half on a 4-yard run off right tackle out of the shotgun formation on fourth-and-1. “I thought we did a great job from start to the end being able to move the ball, run the ball, pass the ball however we needed to move it,” Herbert said. “I thought the guys up front did an incredible job and to be able to put that together against a very good opponent, it means a lot to me.” The game turned with 21 seconds remaining in the first half. The Titans appeared to tie it at 13 when Roger McCreary ran back Herbert's fumble 20 yards into the end zone. After a replay review, the call was changed to an incomplete pass because officials determined Herbert's arm was going forward, leaving Titans coach Brian Callahan incensed. Callahan said officials initially told him the call was going to stand before they and the replay center in New York took another look. “I'll let you guys decide what you think the call should have been, but I don't want to lose any money,” he said. Harbaugh and Herbert said the reversal was huge. “To be able to go to halftime with the lead and to avoid a play like that is big time,” Herbert said. And then the Chargers took control in the second half. Herbert extended the lead to 20-10 with three minutes to go in the third quarter on a 16-yard pass to Quentin Johnston in the right corner of the end zone. Hassan Haskins, who spent two seasons with Tennessee, extended the advantage to 17 points with a 1-yard dive up the middle. That capped an 11-play, 95-yard drive that ate up seven minutes. “It was just steady. It's like death by a thousand paper cuts when you play that way, and we kind of gave up just enough yards every time on a 95-yard drive to allow them to go punch it in for seven when we had them backed up on the 5,” Callahan said. After a long offseason, the Michigan football team begins fall camp. And in doing so, 247Sports beat writers Zach Shaw and Steve Lorenz break down the five biggest questions they'll be watching from the Wolverines in their one-month build-up to fall camp. The two begin with a couple conversations about Michigan's defensive front. First, they look at who is going to emerge as stars, starters and key rotation players along the defensive line, both at EDGE and tackle in the wake of so many departures from last season. They then turn their attention to possibly Michigan's biggest on-paper weakness, in the linebacker room's perceived lack of depth. After those two topics, they look at a quirkier question in who will lead Michigan in receiving yards this season, debating between Erick All, Ronnie Bell, Cornelius Johnson, Roman Wilson and Andrel Anthony. Can we win a Zoom recruitment? Dug: Best passer at Michigan since? Seth: Makes sense, since Howard probably saw he has two guys named Howard on the roster, and sorted the 247 rankings by best passer. Football recruiting: Do we panic? No. Do we worry? Yes. Sam's starting to believe Dante Moore is more likely to go to Oregon now. If you're chasing Michigan State you have a problem. Michigan's new tack sounds like a morality play and is going to blow up in their faces. Players have value to their institutions before they play: they have earned it. The players create themselves more than the coaches. Michigan has a good talent evaluation program but so does Notre Dame, and they will get in on these guys too. Hassan Haskins was a great player in high school—the system is getting better at identifying those guys. Off-air: This NIL approach is exactly like what got Michigan to fall behind in the 1950s. Oosterbaan and Crisler thought they had a solid program because they won in '47 and '48, and didn't figure out until it was way too late that they really were missing a major shift in CFB history and allowing MSU, OSU, and ND to thrive when Michigan should have dominated the early TV era.

Spring Game - Offense starts at 1:00 It's been so long since there was a spring game we could actually talk about. Instead of a punting exhibition we got Donovan Edwards and Blake Corum smack-talking each other from across the field. It was fun. Davis Warren looked to be functional, Bowman maybe not as much. Yes, Alex Orji's name is pronounced the way you think it is. Mullings might be the closest to replacing Hassan Haskins as the power back (Wisconsin recruited him for running back, after all). Idaho... Almost impossible to grade the offensive line based on how much it was mixed around but the starting five are probably decided anyways. Spring Game - Defense starts at 27:13 All eyes on Will Johnson and Mike Sainristil, who both looked good. Going to need the corners to step up this year. Not sure if there's anyone to replace Dax Hill in the slot, it might be Sainristil. Have yet to see McBurrows who is still recovering from injury. Hill-Green looks to be atop the linebackers (he got pulled early meaning he's a guy). Back-up linebackers are pretty meh. If Brian was a walk-on QB he would wear 37 so that if he completed one pass he would be the best #37 of all time. In general, the defensive line did not get obliterated which is encouraging. Mason Graham might be Ryan Glasgow 2.0. Raequan Williams is the MSU player Seth can't remember. Derrick Moore is on his way to be a player. Braiden McGregor got mauled by the tight ends. Moten looked like more of a leader at safety. 3. Hot Takes and Basketball starts at 51:40 Takes hotter than Caleb Love merchandise and NIL rights. Double pass should be the flea flicker of 2022 - Brian wants a flea flicker hook and ladder. DeVante' Jones has declared for the NBA draft but Hunter Dickinson has not. Moussa would likely get drafted if he goes, Hunter might not. Michigan needs shooters from the portal. Kansas State combo guard Nijel Pack is someone to keep an eye out for in the transfer portal but he'll be heavily recruited by everyone. Seth thinks Michigan men's basketball has some of the best coaches in the Big Ten, the team was limited by shooting and roster mis-management. 4. U.S. Soccer starts at 1:34:22 Brian has run out of things to talk about and has decided to talk about U.S. Soccer and the World Cup. How many times will Brian say "Michigan" instead of "U.S."? U.S. plays great at home but not on the road. Can the U.S. handle the climate? Brian expresses heavy feelings about Clemens.
