Jim Abbott is an University of Michigan Baseball Hall of Famer and veteran MLB pitcher known for being born with one hand. His parents never treated him any differently and taught him to live independently and joyfully. Growing up, Jim played multiple sports and joined his high school football team as quarterback, but he ultimately chose baseball when he went to University of Michigan. As a kid, Jim's dad worked with him to improve on speed and technique, perfecting what's now known as the Abbott switch. While pitching, Jim would balance his glove on his right wrist, where the arm ends, pitching with his left arm. When fielding, he'd quickly switch the glove to his left hand. Despite having offers to play professionally out of high school, Jim opted to attend University of Michigan where he earned the Golden Spikes Award. 1988, Jim's junior year at University of Michigan, proved to be an exciting one as he won Big Ten Athlete of the Year, signed with the Angels, played in the Pan American games, defeating Cuba in the finals, AND helped lead the US Olympic baseball team to gold at the summer games in Seoul, South Korea. After playing with the Angels for four seasons, he was traded to the Yankees, where he and his wife navigated big city life as a young couple. In 1993, Jim famously threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians, and the season was halted the following year due to the MLB strike. He eventually signed with the White Sox as a free agent and then re-signed with the Angels in 1996. Jim discusses his struggles through his professional career and how he had to meet some deeply-buried fears head-on to realize and appreciate that there's much more to him as a person than playing in the MLB. Jim retired from baseball in '97 and unlocked his passion for sharing his story to encourage others to persevere and overcome seemingly impossible challenges. mentordna.ioLinkedIn

The Gators' baseball team is the last UF program still going after an improbable run to the College World Series. Along the way, Jac Caglianone has left no doubt he's the program's greatest slugger — and among the best all time. Kevin Kopps is a Golden Spikes Award winner among many other accolades from his continuing time in baseball: first as a pitcher for the Arkansas Razorbacks and now as a pitcher in the minor leagues. This week, he joins Cale and Reid to talk about seeing God lead him and make His plans known, how to battle the temptation of sudden success and stay humble through it all, passing through the valley of weeping which God turns into a spring, and ultimately how he realized his identity could no longer be in baseball but instead ought to be fixed upon Jesus Christ alone. This episode originally aired on February 28, 2023. The burning of the piano, a long-standing tradition that started with the Royal Air Force, was recently held at Dobbins Air Reserve Base to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the 700th Airlift Squadron. The ceremony is also meant to honor fallen airmen, particularly those who have given their lives in support of the squadron's missions through the years. The tradition is said to have originated from two stories related to the RAF during World War II. The controlled burn is conducted with utmost caution to minimize risks and maximize safety. The event at Dobbins was the first of its kind and is planned to be an annual tradition commemorating those who lost airmen from Dobbins who died in the previous year. A woman accused of shoplifting, Laytosha Virgil, escaped into a storm drain during a hearing in the Cobb County Superior Court's mental health court. She had been out on a $5,720 bond for felony shoplifting when she suddenly left the courthouse and was found in a storm drain. Law enforcement went through about 100 feet of narrow drainage to secure Virgil, who refused to leave, and bring her back above ground. Virgil was taken into custody around 3 p.m. and transported to a local hospital for evaluation and medical care. Thursday was the second time in two months Virgil was caught trying to hide from authorities. They were charged with theft by taking and abandonment of a dead body and released on $8,470 bond. Chris Kirk shot 2-under par 70 on his opening round of the Masters on Thursday. Kirk had a rough start with a double-bogey on the second hole followed by two bogeys. However, he bounced back and made a pair of 10-foot putts for birdie on the seventh and ninth holes. Kirk became the first player to make an eagle at the newly lengthened par-5 13th. He made his final birdie on the par-3 16th and saved his par on the par-4 17th. On the final hole, his par putt lipped out, resulting in a bogey. In his three previous Masters appearances, Kirk has made the cut twice. Happy hump day ladies and gentlemen — this is Noles News Now presented by Tomahawk Nation, covering the latest in FSU athletics. Let's dive in with some recruiting news off the top — yesterday, the Seminoles extended offers to a pair of 2023 quarterbacks — four-star Ricky Collins out of Louisiana (currently committed to the Purdue Boilermakers) and three-star Brock Glenn out of Memphis. Each hold more than a few Power 5 offers, showing that the Seminoles aren't just content taking a single QB in this year's class. Currently, four-star Chris Parson is the only quarterback committed — he's been locked in with the Seminoles for nearly a year now, becoming a bellcow of the class while continuing to expand his game. He had a good showing at the Elite 11 Regional in mid-May, showcasing why he's considered the No. 16 quarterback in the country by 247. So why the offers? While the staff is high on Parson, putting all their eggs in one basket isn't their goal — FSU took one quarterback in 2022, AJ Duffy, while failing to land a high school prospect in 2021 after the flip of Luke Altmyer to Ole Miss. With just three scholarship QBs currently on roster, it's imperative for the staff to start building depth and competition at the position. In baseball news, Parker Messick, has been named a semifinalist for two National Player of the Year awards — the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award after being named a first-team All-ACC pitcher, leading the league in strikeouts, strikeouts per nine innings, strikeout-to-walk ratio, and WHIP. Meanwhile, the No. 9 seed Seminoles kick off ACC Tournament play today vs. Virginia, with a second matchup vs. Notre Dame set for Thursday. Bryce Hubbart will be today's starting pitcher, with Messick handling primary duties on Thursday. The Cavalier offense is led by third baseman Jake Gelof and left fielder Alex Tappen. The first team All-ACC duo are second in the nation in combined RBIS at 144. Brian Gursky is the ace on the mound with a 7-1 record overall with 78 strikeouts on the season. In the ACC tournament, FSU holds a 9-8 record over UVA. Overall, the Seminoles are 59-31 all-time against the Cavs. Friday's game will be a chance for the Seminoles to get revenge for a weekend sweep at the hands of Notre Dame in Tallahassee earlier this season. The Irish are also coming off a regular season-ending series loss (Miami). Notre Dame's top three starters all boast an ERA under 3.00, led by John Bertrand. FSU will most likely face either Bertrand or Austin Temple in their Thursday matchup. On the offensive side, the Irish have a balanced attack led by Brooks Coetzee and Jack Zyska. If Florida State wins their pool, they will face the winner of Pool A on Saturday. The championship game will be played on Sunday afternoon. Florida State women's golf's longest ever run in the NCAA Championship tournament came to an end Tuesday — the Seminoles fell to Texas A&M in the quarterfinals of match play at the championship finals. The Seminoles advanced to match play for the first time in school history and finished in a tie for fifth place in the final national standings – the highest NCAA Championship finish in school history. Florida State women's tennis athletes Petra Hule and Anna Arkadianou bowed out of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Tuesday night, falling to Janice Tjen and Savannah Broadus of Pepperdine. Hule finishes her FSU career with 202 career wins in singles and doubles play combined, including a record-tying 106 wins in doubles play. Arkadianou, just a sophomore, has a chance to anchor next year's team as she gained valuable experience on FSU's No. 1 doubles tandem while being a No. 2/3 player in singles play. “The College Baseball Experience,” (@TCEonSGPN) is the only podcast that has committed 100% of it's content to gambling on NCAA Baseball. Host Noah Bieniek (@Seventy7NB) of the Sports Gambling Podcast Network has provided picks and gambling analysis on College Football, College Basketball, and the MLB but today he is dedicating his talents to the college diamond. From the SEC to the Big West we're covering every bettable game until College World Series. Talking weekly NCAA Baseball scores there's no better place for College Baseball gambling. Join us during the Road To Omaha and experience the bettor side of college baseball with, “The College Baseball Experience.” The newest episode starts by recapping the latest weekend of college baseball and lists his biggest takeaways, news, and notes. First, Bieniek begins covering the College Baseball scene with the upset that Grand Canyon pulled over Stanford on Saturday. During the weekend Notre Dame swept Wake Forest, is Bieniek finally buying stock in the Fighting Irish? While on the topic of sweeps, Tennessee picked up another in Gainesville against the Florida Gators. Are we pressing the panic button on head coach Kevin O'Sullivan's squad? Can Jacob Burke, and Miami Florida stay consistent? Was TCU's series win in Stillwater a fluke? Georgia's Johnathan Cannon pitched for the first time coming off of injury and threw five perfect innings. Wofford wowed in Macon against Mercer. Louisville won an electric ACC series against NC State. Maryland establishes themselves as the college baseball team to beat in the Big Ten after their series victory in Illinois. Bieniek still thinks Arkansas is overrated as they drop another series to Texas A&M. Next, Bieniek lists his news and notes from the weekend of games. Does Southern Mississippi have the best starting rotation in all of college baseball? Bieniek is now seriously interested in placing a +4000 future on Gonzaga to win the 2022 College World Series. After the weekend recap, Bieniek talks about the top candidates to win the Golden Spikes Award. Has Texas' Ivan Melendez's performance over the weekend solidified him as at least a finalist for college baseball's "Heisman Trophy?" Additionally, other nominees mentioned were Auburn's Sonny DiChiara, Georgia Tech's Kevin Parada, and Oregon State's Cooper Hjerpe. In Episode 56 we're talking with Sam Favata, the first Titan Alumni from the 1979 National Championship team to come on the show. Favata scored the winning run in the 1979 championship game, a 2-to-1 victory over Arkansas. Favata was a two-time all conference selection in 1979 and 1980 and still holds numerous records in the Titan Baseball history books. Favata's 66 stolen bases in 1979 season still ranks No. 1 today for the most stolen bases by a Titan in a single season. His 116 hits in 1979 is tied for first with John Fishel's 116 hits in the Titans second national championship year of 1984. In the 1979 season, Favata's .417 batting average led the Titans, beating out Golden Spikes Award winner Tim Wallach for the top batting average. That .417 batting average ranks fourth all time for a single season behind Gary Brown, Steve Woodward and Mark Kotsay. In three season with the Titans, Favata averaged .363 with 22 home runs and 109 RBI. In 1980, Favata was drafted in the 13th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. This is Part 1 of a two part conversation and Episode 57 will cover Favata's time at the 1979 College World Series, his junior year at Cal State Fullerton in 1980, getting drafted and playing professionally. We will also cover his catastrophic head injury suffered while playing professional baseball and his miraculous comeback that was featured on the popular 1980's TV show, "That's Incredible". Part 1 highlights include:
Musso previews the SEC as a whole ahead of the 2022 season, and gives his predicted order of finish. We also talk the three LSU Tigers who landed on the Golden Spikes Award watch list.

Dave Van Horn's tenure at Arkansas has been defined by success. Moments fueled by some of the all-time greats, including two Golden Spikes Award winners. And those successes—and the players involved in them—continue to elevate the Razorback baseball program. The wins, accolades and trophies have raised the bar for Razorback baseball, now seen as one of the very best programs in the country. In Part 2 of this exclusive conversation with Dave Van Horn, Phil Elson and the skipper talk successes, standards and wanting to win that national championship for his alma mater.

Clark was a six-time MLB All-Star, a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, a Gold Glove Award winner, and the winner of the National League Championship Series Most Valuable Player Award in 1989.Clark has been inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame, Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. Nate Trosky and Trent Mongero are joined by Damon Lessler for Part 2! Damon Lessler recently accepted the title of hitting coach at Charleston Southern University in the Big South Conference. Most recently Lessler coached in the Pac-12 conference at the University of California where he served as the Golden Bears' infield, catching & base running coach while assisting with the program's hitters. He was the team's third base coach & also dealt with player recruitment. Lessler spent three seasons in Bear Territory during a tenure that was highlighted by steady player development and Cal's first trip to an NCAA Regional since 2015. The Bears punched their ticket as an at-large bid and the No. 2 seed at the Fayetteville (Ark.) Regional after finishing fourth in the Pac-12 and carrying a No. 31 RPI ranking at the conclusion of the regular season. Cal's 2019 success continued into the summer when seven Bears were selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft, including first-round picks Andrew Vaughn (No. 3 overall, White Sox) and Korey Lee (No. 32 overall, Houston). Vaughn and Lee - both of which went undrafted out of high school - became the first duo in school history to be taken in the first round of the same draft. Vaughn, who was the program's highest-drafted player ever, was also named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award for the second straight year. Lee became Cal's second catcher drafted in as many years, a credit to Lessler mentorship. Lessler additionally guided shortstop Cameron Eden, who batted .365 with a team-leading 73 hits, 20 stolen bases and eight home runs all while making a position change midseason to center field during his junior season. Eden went on to be a sixth round selection by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2019 MLB Draft. In 2018, Lessler worked closely with Cal's catchers as the Bears went 32-22 overall and 16-14 in the Pac-12. Cal catcher Tyrus Greene earned All-Pac-12 honors thanks to a season in which he hit .320. Greene committed just three errors, allowed only four passed balls, and went on to be drafted by the Chicago White Sox. A Bay Area native who hails from nearby Castro Valley, Calif., Lessler spent time as an assistant coach at San Jose State. He served as the Spartans' recruiting coordinator while also working with infielders, hitters and coaching third base. Prior to joining the Spartans, Lessler spent the 2016 season as an assistant coach at Cal Poly and worked in the same role at Southern Mississippi in 2015. In 2013 and 2014, he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Chico State and helped the Wildcats go a combined 80-33 in two seasons. Working again with infielders, he helped Chico State compile a .977 fielding percentage in 2014, a mark that ranked first in all of Division II baseball that year. Chico State reached the NCAA Division II West Region finals in 2013 and the Division II College World Series in 2014. A shortstop at Castro Valley High School, Lessler went on to play collegiately at Mesa (Ariz.) Community College, Sonoma State and Mississippi Valley State. He went on to play professionally in the Northern League, the American Association and the Frontier League in addition to playing in five different countries. He transitioned to coaching in 2011. A 2006 graduate of Mississippi Valley State, Lessler earned his bachelor's degree in mass communications while also earning valedictorian honors from the university. In 2007, he earned a master's degree in sports administration from Southern Mississippi, where he also served as a graduate assistant while finishing his playing career. www.troskyranch.com https://troskybaseball.com/ https://coachmongero.com/ Thanks to our sponsors at: https://soldiersports.us/ https://winreality.com Use Code Trosky for one month free https://www.jaegersports.com/ https://qualityatbats.com/

In 1984, Oddibe McDowell put together perhaps the greatest offensive season in Sun Devil history on his way to the Golden Spikes Award. The legendary "O" joins the show to talk about how an unanswered letter to the University of Miami led him to Arizona State, why his teammates still mean more to him than anything and what the favorite moment in Tempe was. The College Baseball Hall of Famer also clears up once and for all whether it was the number 0 or the letter O that was retired by ASU in 1989.
He's the first recipient of the Rudy Scholz Award. This is equivalent to the Heisman Trophy, Hobey Baker Award, and Golden Spikes Award. This award is given to the "Best" Rugby Player in College. From winning this award, he goes on to represent the United States in numerous International competitions. One of which was versus England (his home country). Added to this, he was selected to play for the most elite team in the country - the US Eagles. Unfortunately, due to an ankle injury he was unable to participate in this year's World Cup. To talk with Dylan Audsley 100 times, one would never know half of the athletic accolades he has accumulated. This is just part of what makes him such an incredible person. This season marked his 2nd season as a Professional Rugby Player. This season would mark his second season with the San Diego Legion of the MLR (Major League Rugby). During this interview, Dylan shares with us insights that are utterly incredible. Our conversation covers such topics as Buddhism, The Hudson School of Art, the literature of "The Boys in the Boat", art, meditation, mindest, COVID, the History of Rugby, Asian contemporary art, and the effects of Buddhism on art. Needless to say ... these are topics that will never be discussed with one person alone ever again! Dylan is an athlete who's athleticism is only matched by his incredible personality and depth of intelligence. He is a person who can make you feel intellectually engaged during every topic he shares with you. Having the opportunity to connect with such an eclectic individual as Dylan Audsley, is what makes our PodCast so entertaining. This interview, encapsulates the essence of HeadSet Podcast with how we are able to discuss both the mindset of athletes as well as the "Behind the Scenes" lives and depths of elite professional in sports today! Carlos "Q-uperman" Quentin, was an incredible athlete who's statistics are worthy of Hall of Fame discussion. As a young athlete, growing up in San Diego California, this three sport "Elite" high school athlete won major awards outside of his primary skill sets in baseball. As a football player he awarded Defensive Player of the year as an outside linebacker. As a basketball player, he would play a major role in his school winning the State Championship. All of which helped him earn a scholarship to Stanford. That same year, he would finish he would be selected as one of Five Finalists for the Golden Spikes Award. As a member of the Stanford baseball team, Carlos led the team to the playoffs each of the three years he played for the Cardinals. In his final year (Junior year), he led the team to the National Championship series versus Rice University. Unfortunately losing in the end. Nevertheless, Carlos would go on to become a 2nd Round pick (29th Overall) for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Carlos would go on to play 9 seasons in the Major Leagues for Arizona, the Chicago White Sox, and his hometown San Diego Padres. At the end of his second season, he was nominated as a Finalist for the America League Most Valuable Player Award. Carlos would end his career with incredible statistics (jaw dropping statistics) ... https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/q/quentca01.shtml Part of what makes these statistics so impressive, rests within the incredible injuries he sustained throughout his career. For many athletes, just one of the many, potentially career ending, injuries would have been enough for many players to be forced into retirement. But with all of these amazing athletic accolades behind him, to meet this kind heart-hearted and soft spoken person individual - after one has become comfortable with his huge physical stature, you are quickly swept away by his inquisitive and intellectual personality. Carlos' incredible intellect is now helping him to evolve the way the game of baseball is "evaluated". Not only is he trying to add a "NEW" Stat column for evaluation - when we watch players, but he is looking to add a statistic that is spoken of in "EVERY" sport and "EVERY business ... but yet this conversation piece has no form of measurement. To make things even more interesting ... the element that he seeks to shed light upon is one which EVERY team and business hopes to find in all of its players/employees ... Figured it out yet???? ... You'll just have to listen to find out the answer!!! Listen to how this incredible athlete, completes his "Storybook" career ... by now returning to school ... with the intention of making the sport that gave him so much ... evolve into something "EVEN BETTER" ... This is truly a story and conversation about an athlete trying to "Give back" ... --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/headset-sports/support

The day is finally upon us. James Holzhauer has lost. But also, the Orioles are picking 1-1. After discussing Kyle's trip to New Orleans and Glenn's triumph by "winning" the Baltimore 10 Miler (he didn't, he just finished it); the guys move into Draft conversation. Will it bother you if the Birds DON'T take Adley Rutschman first overall? Late in Hour 1, former Oregon State coach Pat Casey shared his thoughts on why the Birds should take his former catcher, including how Rutschman would handle the burden of being the "face of the franchise." Early in Hour 2, SI MLB writer Jon Tayler joined us to further discuss Rutschman. Why will things be different for the catching prospect than they have been for so many other highly thought of backstops? And late in Hour 2, Navy pitcher Noah Song joined us to discuss his incredible career, including being a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award this year and getting ready for the MLB Draft despite not knowing how his Naval service will impact when he can get his baseball career going.

Before Bryce Harper was the top pick in the Major League Baseball draft, before he signed the sport’s biggest contract ever for a first-year pro, he gambled his future on one make-or-break season. The Las Vegas High School sophomore already had dominated the competition like Mickey Mantle on the playground and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which dubbed him the “most exciting prodigy since LeBron James.” Seeking greater tests as a hitter, the precocious phenom got his GED and enrolled at the College of Southern Nevada, where he could face pro prospects in a challenging wooden-bat league that prohibited the hitter-friendly aluminum bats used throughout college ball. Harper shattered the school’s home run record with 31 (the previous mark was 12) and compiled a startling 1.513 OPS while leading his team to the Junior College World Series. For his heroics, the 17-year-old became the only position player from a junior college to win the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation’s best amateur baseball player. Las Vegas sportswriter Rob Miech was “embedded” with the Southern Nevada Coyotes team and brings us along for the ride—into the dugout and locker room and on team buses and in motel rooms, from the scorched fields to the snow-capped horizons of the Scenic West Athletic Conference—to deliver a warts-and-all account of a boy among men playing like a man among boys. Amid the media circus that descended upon team and town, we read fascinating personal stories including the dynamics between veteran coach Tim Chambers and Harper’s protective father, the camaraderie with—and jealousies of—other players, the fans and autograph seekers (and girls) who all want a piece of the young star, and how Harper is suspended from the World Series after protesting an umpire’s call, and the role his faith plays in his life. The Last Natural shows us a season in the life of baseball’s top rising star, culminating in a dramatic conclusion when Harper is drafted #1 by the Washington Nationals and, after tense negotiations that go up until just seconds before the midnight deadline, signs a $9.9 million contract. Even more than this, Miech’s book is the story of a team and its community, the hopes and aspirations of its players and coaches, and the spirit of pure baseball that lies at the heart of the American dream.
