Show Notes:On this week's episode I speak with horror critic and journalist Matthew Jackson. His writing has been featured in publications like Bloody Disgusting, Pop Heist, and Fangoria and he also hosts a literary horror podcast called The Scares that Shaped Us. He revealed how he got into horror despite his parents not allowing it in their house, why he loves being scared, and his favorite horror books of the year so far. He also talked to me about the controversial horror movie that he genuinely likes and the director behind the films that he's always had the most fun seeing in theatres, and more!Matthew's Socials: Website: matthewjacksonwrites.com The Scares that Shaped Us: https://thescaresthatshapedus.com/ Who's There? Matthew O. Jackson is perhaps the world's most renowned scholar of the economics of networks; as a 2005-06 CASBS fellow, he wrote most of his still-influential book Social and Economic Networks. In this wide-ranging conversation with 2025-26 CASBS fellow Rajiv Sethi, Jackson discusses his foundational work on strategic modeling of networks, empirical applications on the role of economic connectedness in influencing people's life trajectories in the U.S., related multi-disciplinary and cross-national work he is undertaking at the Santa Fe Institute, and recent cutting-edge work using large language models to gain insights into human motivations and behaviors. When we view Indigenous communities not as risks to be managed but as partners in building stronger, more sustainable, and more profitable infrastructure projects, what changes? In this episode, Shormila speaks with Matthew Jackson, Hydro One's Vice President of Indigenous Partnerships. Matthew has spent more than a decade working with the Indigenous communities impacted by energy sector projects. He has seen firsthand how that essential mindset shift can unlock both reconciliation and commercial success. Today, more and more organizations are recognizing how vital Indigenous perspectives are to Canada's infrastructure and economic expansion. Many project failures stem from a broken starting point: the assumption that Indigenous communities are an obstacle rather than rights-holders and value-creators. Transitioning from an oppositional to a partner relationship transforms the timelines, governance, and outcomes of major programmes. Today, Hydro One conducts business with Indigenous communities through a 50/50 equity partnership model—an approach that is rebuilding trust, accelerating decision-making, and reducing environmental and safety impacts.Shormila and Matthew's conversation provides practical advice for leaders and teams. While Hydro One's approach cannot be cut and pasted across the industry, key components of their method are transferrable. Matthew encourages teams to engage early, lead with transparency, and be open to a new way of working. Hydro One's marked acceleration of green-lighted projects proves the undeniable positive impact of this approach.Key Takeaways How shifting from “Indigenous risk” to “Indigenous opportunity” changes project outcomes; The revenue, work safety, and environmental benefits of being willing to try new approaches; The strong Indigenous leadership that led to Hydro One's success;Advice for the new generation of infrastructure professionals pursuing Indigenous relationships; The realities of continuing social segregation, even in recent years.Quote:“The future of this country is bright if we can embrace that Indigenous opportunity and that Indigenous value.” - Matthew JacksonThe conversation doesn't stop here—connect and converse with our community via LinkedIn:Follow Navigating Major Programmes: https://www.linkedin.com/company/navigating-major-programmes/Read Riccardo's latest at www.riccardocosentino.comFollow Shormila Chatterjee: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shormilac/Follow Matthew Jackson: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-jackson-957a3b24/

Direct-to-video. Erotic thriller. Nineties vampires. Wings Hauser. These are just a few phrases we could use to describe Pale Blood, V. V. Dachin Hsu and Michael W. Leighton's underground vampire movie. Some of these descriptions — or maybe even all of them — would be enough to get the average horror fan to add Pale Blood to their watchlist. But is there more to the movie than nineties nostalgia? That, and so much more, is the focus of this episode with film critic and The Scares That Shaped Us host Matthew Jackson.

Awaken, my friends. We're on a stateside vampirism kick—no Transylvanian castles allowed. This run begins south of the border with “From Dusk Till Dawn” (1996) a horror-action romp that begs the question, what if pistol-toting outlaws stumbled into a biker bar run by the undead? Matthew Jackson (host of “The Scares That Shaped Us” podcast) kicks off this series. He's here to talk about George Clooney's first starring role, anoint the hottest on-screen vampire of all time, and reflect on just how seismic it was when Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez joined forces in 1996. Let's talk about ITC and more specifically the amazing new device you've heard me talk about called PRISM - invented by Joshua Sean. Matthew Jackson pops in to discuss the world debut of PRISM at the upcoming Haunted America Conference. We get into the details of what makes PRISM different from other devices. A great chat and Nigel lets me know how I screwed up by not switching my mic input when Matt joined me. So apologies for that to that listeners. In this week's episode, Casey Scott and Dr. Matt Woolley are joined by Matthew Jackson, a former BYU professor, to talk about Matthew's experimentation with substances growing up in a small town, the shame he felt after his addiction became more well-known, and how a spiritual awakening led him to experience recovery for the first time. Then Matthew talks about his life without substance abuse, how pursuing his Ph.D. led to a reliance on caffeine, and his decision to begin abusing energy drinks and pain pills to stay focused on his goals. Matthew also talks about the "Holy Trinity" of addiction, the events that led to his rock bottom, and what his recovery looks like now.
Matthew Jackson joins Casey Scott and Dr. Matt Woolley again to talk about how his life has changed after his time on the podcast three years ago, the ways his recovery has shifted, and his decision to pursue being a Substance Use Disorder / Addiction Counselor for the youth. We also dive into how substance abuse has evolved among the youth, modalities that Matthew uses to help the youth overcome substance abuse and addiction, as well as how dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can help introduce emotional skills to the youth that can be used to combat addictive tendencies.

If you think about the people in your life, it's likely that they share a lot in common with you. Maybe they like the same kinds of food, or enjoy the same hobbies. But, if you dig a little deeper, you may find that they share much more: they might make the same amount of money as you, or share the same race. This week, we talk with economists Luigi Pistaferri and Matthew Jackson about why we often surround ourselves with people who are just like us — and how we can transform our lives by pushing back against this phenomenon. Did you catch last week's episode on the science of figuring out what you want? You can find it here. And if you'd like to make a financial contribution to support our work, you can do so here.
