The shooting left Arnaldo severely traumatized, unable to remain in the home where Charles Kinsey had taken care of him. The next day, he was involuntarily committed to a hospital psych ward, where days stretched into weeks into well over-a-month as the state of Florida struggled to find a new home for him. Eventually, Arnaldo finds himself in a new facility with a well-documented track record of abuse and neglect. It's Halloween when we first meet Arnaldo face-to-face. Ironically, after everything he's endured, the staff have dressed him in a police uniform costume.
Only Human listeners, we're here with a new podcast series that we think will be right up your alley. Aftereffect touches on the same themes of how health intersects with our lives everyday. Give it a shot. Let us know what you think. Just before 5pm on Monday July 18th, 2016, a 26-year old autistic man named Arnaldo Rios Soto walked out of his North Miami home. He had a silver toy truck in his hand. Hours later, his life would be changed forever. A passing motorist mistook Arnaldo’s toy for a gun and called 911. Police and SWAT arrived and the confrontation was captured in a cell phone video. The encounter left Arnaldo's behavioral aide -- a black man named Charles Kinsey -- severely wounded, and it left Arnaldo in need of round-the-clock care. As a result, three police officers lost their jobs, including the now-former North Miami chief of police, Gary Eugene. In his words: "We blew it." Thank you to Sara Luterman of NOS Magazine and reporter Eric Garcia for pointing us to Arnaldo's story. They've written about his journey as well.

Politicians are making all kinds of wild promises these days. People want to change America to their own vision. But what is that vision? They want to make America "safe" again. But for whom? And to what end? Currently, uarmed black people are routinely shot to death by the cops, but heavily armed Caucasians face off with police and often walk away without a scratch. Hear the story of heavily armed Bryan Brough who according to Smyrna, Georgia police, pulled a gun on the cops. You guessed it: Bryan still lives and breathes. An uarmed black therapist Charles Kinsey was shot by a police officer who, according to the police dept, was aiming for Kinsey's autistic patient. When Kinsey asked why they shot him, they replied, "I don't know." In Jonesboro, AK, Chavis Carter was handcuffed in the back seat of a police car. Although his hands were cuffed behind his back, police insist that somehow he got hold of a gun and shot himself in his head. It's been ruled a "suicide". A Florida judge is under investigation after telling blacks to "take a ship back to Africa". But we are supposed to believe that he is a air and impartial judge. Although all parties agree regarding reforms, the NY Council will not vote officially on the police reform bill know as the Right To Know Act. Without the vote, the proposed changes will not have the force of law behind them. Cincinnati PD is up in arms about a Facebook post made by one of their officers. Officer Freddie Vincent warned that white officers are just "looking for a reason to kill a black man." Sandra Bland's lawyer say that a former guard admitted under oath to lying and falsifying the jail log. Bedford and LaMisha talk about “What’s Going On?” with the #RNCinCLE; focusing on strategic Republican racism, #FamousMelaniaTrumpQuotes, and the double standards that come with Privilege. They do some #RealTalk about police shootings of unarmed Black men, focusing on the shooting of Charles Kinsey, and the pseudoscience pushed by a non-standard psychologist who argues that all police shootings are justified. They close out the episode describing some self-care tools that everyone can use, including the power of gratitude. Follow us on Twitter: @NamingItPodcast | @DrBFPalmer | @LaMishaHill.
