Jim went to Kenya in 2018 which revealed his true calling. He went at the encouragement of a friend, and in a single moment, discovered a need that would pivot his life in ways he could not have imagined. While on safari, Jim visited a medical clinic for the Masai people, and learned that they didn't have access to critical dental care. Since his wife, Jody, is a dental hygienist, he knew instantly how to solve that problem. Ten months later, he had founded the Hardwick Foundation, and they led their first dental team to Kenya. In this inaugural trip, 191 people were treated and 258 procedures were performed in a tent, at no charge to the patients. The impact was instant and significant, and that's the moment he knew his mission was much larger than himself. Today, Jim helps servant leaders go beyond their borders through a program he created called Magnificent Significance. He serves small to midsize business owners who want to live intentional lives and achieve superabundance through service. His experience includes over 25 years in executive leadership, helping his clients generate profitable revenue while taking a deeper look into what really matters by igniting a business culture of engagement and collaboration. Jim has traveled to 42 countries and experienced many different cultures. He is also a keynote speaker who shares his unique servant leadership journey from sales to nonprofits to safaris. He and Jody are proud to be the 2022 recipients of the James E. MacLennan Everyday Hero award through Up With People. His core mission is to encourage his clients to embrace their servant's heart to elevate their business. In this episode of the Lessons in Leadership podcast, I had the privilege of sitting down with Jim Hardwick, a man whose journey from corporate America to servant leadership is nothing short of inspiring. Our conversation revolved around a simple yet profound idea—how serving others can elevate not just our businesses, but our lives as a whole. And at the heart of it all? A safari trip to Kenya that turned into a life-changing mission. If you like today's message, here are five ways I can help you grow faster… 1. Speak at your next event. 5. Conduct a mindset, sales, or leadership training workshop for your team. https://www.billstorm.com/ Jim Hardwick's life changed forever when he chose to go beyond his borders. Growing up in Speedway, Indiana, he had little chance to travel during his childhood. So, when the opportunity arose to join Up With People and spend time with 125 other kids from 25 different countries, he seized the chance to expand his horizons. That trip made such an impact on his life, and set the trajectory for success. What followed was 36 years in corporate America, helping sales teams and leaders generate consistent revenue. And while this has always been fulfilling, Jim knew there had to be more. That's when a fateful trip to Kenya revealed his true calling. He went at the encouragement of a friend, and in a single moment, discovered a need that would pivot his life in ways he could not have imagined. While on safari, Jim visited a medical clinic for the Masai people, and learned that they didn't have access to critical dental care. You won't believe what people in different countries do before, during, and right after their wedding day following age-old traditions. Here are some crazy rituals for celebrating love from around the world. While most brides-to-be spend arduous hours at the gym, young girls in Mauritania are fattened up in a practice known as “leblouh". For a child to become an adult and ready for marriage in Bali, they have to go through a special tooth filing ceremony. In a tradition that goes back hundreds of years, a Tujia bride starts crying a month before her big day and is later joined by her mother, grandmother, sisters and aunts. To break the spell that would make their prospective husband die early, some women India get married to trees first. In Scotland, friends and family gladly throw molasses, ash, feathers, flour and way more disgusting things all over the bride to scare off evil spirits and bring good luck. The newlyweds in Congo never smile during the wedding ceremony to show how serious their commitment to their future family is. Masai fathers have their own very special way of blessing their newlywed daughters by spitting on their heads and breasts. Music: Seahorse - Rondo Brothers Almost August - Dan Lebowitz Arc of the Sun — The 126ers Blue Skies — Silent Partner Yucatan Peninsula — Biz Baz Studio TIMESTAMPS Force-feeding future brides 0:24 Tooth-filing ceremony 1:22 Advice from a chicken liver 2:07 Whale tooth offering 2:40 Bridal tears 3:19 Married to a tree 4:04 Tar-and-feathering the bride 4:37 Smash it (and clean it up) 5:16 Fighting for shoes 5:48 Poker face 6:22 Human rug 6:47 A good luck spit 7:09 SUMMARY -In Mauritania, young girls and women are fattened up before marriage as their idea of female beauty is curves, layers of fat, and stretch marks. -Imagine this: the people of Bali go through a special tooth filing ceremony to “cut down” the six sins that live in every person. -The Daur people of China's Inner Mongolia cut open a baby chicken to pick the date for the big day. -In Fiji, young men not only have to ask for her father's permission, but also bring him a whale tooth to marry the girl of their dreams. -The Tujia brides in Southwest China start crying a month before the big day. Later, the female part of the family joins them. -Believe it or not, some women in India marry trees all because of their astrological sign. -Scottish brides go through a “blackening” ritual to scare off evil spirits and attract good luck. -The wedding guests in Germany get to smash porcelain and ceramic dishware, and the newlyweds have to clean it all up afterwards as their first shared chore together. -In India, the groom's side has to protect the shoes from being stolen by the bride's family. -If you're ever invited to a wedding in the Congo, don't expect the bride and groom to smile, they avoid it to show how serious the commitment to future family is. -Once the wedding ceremony is over in French Polynesia, all the guests on the bride's side lie face down in the dirt to make one long human rug. -Masai fathers try to trick fate by spitting on their daughters heads and breasts. "No one had me making the Olympic team, no one definitely had me winning, and in that moment I felt I proved myself right and I proved everyone else wrong." Masai Russell On this episode of the Pivot Podcast in partnership with Fanatics, we sit down with Olympic gold medalist Masai Russell, who shocked the world when she took home the gold in the 100m hurdles at just 24 years old after finishing third in the Olympic qualifiers. Masai opens up to Ryan, Fred, and Channing about her journey, sharing how she pushed through the toughest mental and physical moments when quitting felt like her only option. Masai shares the mindset shift that helped her overcome the haters and self-doubt, and ultimately prove herself right- even when no one else had her making the Olympic team, let alone winning Gold in Paris.  The Kentucky Wildcat star is the NCAA record holder in the event, Masai has been incredibly dedicated to track and field since she was eight years old. Her passion for the sport runs deep, and she explains to the guys why her motivation has nothing to do with the money or the fame, but doing what she loves and letting the rest fall into place. The conversation is full of fun and genuine moments, giving us a glimpse into a young black woman with determination, discipline and reveals her future goals, from breaking world records to continuing to grow as an athlete and role model. But as sweet and well spoken as Masai is, don't let the cheery spirit fool you, Masai makes it clear, when it comes to competing, being a savage is all she knows. Humbled by the opportunities and success in her young life, Masai is grounded by her family roots and uses her life experiences to offer insight into the future of sports, college NIL deals, promoting a personal brand using TikTok- where she shows off a more playful, personal side of herself to her 744K followers as a way of connecting with fans off the track, and feels the platform is beneficial for up-and-coming athletes in the space. She also reveals the most famous person in her Instagram, fills in Channing on what the Olympic Village is really like and the "anti-sex beds" as well as other stories that will lead you to wanting to hear more and more. Masai ultimately wants to be the athlete role model she didn't always have growing up, and prove to the world that with hard work and the right mindset, anything is possible. In Episode 1633, Sean Woodley goes solo to assess the Toronto Raptors biggest offseason holes that need filling by ranking them in a little excercise we're calling "Masai's Hierarchy of Needs." Sean spends time talking about the Raptors' need for two-way wings, a third rotation big man to pair with Kelly Olynyk and Jakob Poeltl, and a backup point guard. He ranks those areas of need from most to least pressing, digs into potential in-house solutions the Raptors might already have on their roster, runs through the avenues to address them, be it through the NBA Draft, trades or free agency, and outlines the the pie-in-the-sky dream scenarios, realistic outcomes, and the absolute worst-case solutions the Raptors front office could come up with. Could Alex Sarr be the dream third big the Raptors if they get some lottery luck? Is the long con of the New York Knicks going to culminate in OG Anunoby's surprised return to Toronto as a free agent? And could the Raptors get silly and overpay for middling 5th starts or bench guys?
