Chris Chavez and Kyle Merber close out Memorial Day weekend with a debrief on the Enhanced Games, a quick Xiamen Diamond League recap, and a full LA Track Fest breakdown.Discussed in this episode:– Enhanced Games debrief: It's not track and field, it's not a competitor to the sport, and last night was actually a best-case scenario for Enhanced Games skeptics because no athlete watching thought, “I should take drugs, look how well it worked.”– Xiamen Diamond League: Masai Russell's 12.14 was the race of the meet. Broke her own American record and missed Tobi Amusan's world record of 12.12 by two hundredths; Collen Kebinatshipi running 43.92 for a world lead, now reportedly holding world leads in both the 100m and 400m simultaneously; Alison dos Santos is in arguably the best early-season form of his career; Abby Caldwell wins the women's 1500 again in 3:57, making Australian Commonwealth Games selection very complicated; Yan Ziyi throws 71.74 in the javelin on her 18th birthday.– LA Track Fest: Parker Valby returns with her first race on the outdoor track in 19 months, winning the 5K in a 14:49 personal best; Brandon Miller wins the 800m over a stacked field, but Josh Kerr gave us data on where he's at eight weeks out from his London mile world record attempt; Cooper Lutkenhaus runs his first 1500m at 17 years old and goes 3:45 + more results from LA.– This weekend: Bislett Games (Continental Tour), Rabat Diamond League on Sunday, and the Bandit Grand Prix at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City on Saturday.____________Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez + Kyle Merber | @kylemerberProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSXENDURANCE: Xendurance Protein is designed specifically to help your body recover, rebuild, and get stronger after training.

Today’s episode's incredibly special. Not only is it the Season 20 premiere of Hurdle, but we're bringing you my conversation with the American Record Holder and Olympic Champion in the 100-meter hurdles, Masai Russell. Fresh off her win at Athlos in New York City, Russell joins us to peel back the curtain on the mindset that allowed her to make the U.S. Olympic team, emerge victorious on the world stage, and break records in the process. This conversation was filmed live at Nike’s New York headquarters in front of an incredible audience, many of whom were gearing up for the New York City Marathon. It’s a motivational pre-game for any big moment, whether we’re talking about sport—or beyond. In the episode, Masai is incredibly candid about the struggles she faced in her first professional year, the adversity she had to overcome, and the mental shift she made to change her entire career trajectory. She also shares why, in her mind, she never fails, and how that perspective helps her turn every setback into a blessing. I've also got a big announcement: Today, Hurdle joins iHeart Women's Sports Network! A massive milestone years in the making, thanks so much for being a part of this community and following along for the ride. IN THIS EPISODE The competitive fire Masai developed by growing up with older brothers. Why Masai made the surprising choice to follow her coach and transfer to the University of Kentucky. The essential self-belief required to succeed at an elite level. Her mindset in the starting blocks for the 100m hurdles. Why showing up for yourself, even on bad days, is crucial to building success. The adversity and mental challenges she faced during her first professional year. The daily journaling and self-talk practices that shape her mindset. Why her tough finish (4th place) at the World Championships was ultimately the best thing for her. Her advice for dealing with the pressure and expectations of social media fame. Her big goals: from buying a house at 24 to breaking the World Record and winning in Los Angeles in 2028. QUOTABLE MOMENTS On the power of belief:"I just told myself when I got out there on the line, whatever's going to happen is going to happen, and I think once I kind of let the my ego go and let what I thought I should be or what the expectations of what people put on to me, once I let all that go out the door, I just felt free." On her mindset in the starting blocks:"There's nothing more that's going to change or the outcome isn't going to change. Literally just show up and be, and whatever that outcome is going to be, that's just what it is, and you have to be okay with it." ».

Bob Freling has been the Executive Director of the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) since 1997. Its mission is to design, fund, and implement solar energy solutions to benefit those in poor communities without access to the electricity grid, helping others to overcome energy poverty. SELF provides energy access in the developing world and has an impressive track record of providing more than 750 solar systems in over 20 countries. Bob Freling was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and was educated at Yale University where he earned his degree in Russian Studies. He has an intense appreciation of linguistics having studied Spanish, French, Russian, and Mandarin. After colleage, and when on assignment in Taiwan, he joined the antinuclear movement, and came upon clean solar energy and SELF. He never looked back, realizing the life-changing value of solar in the developing world.Bob discusses SELF's evolution from providing small household, 50-watt solar solutions -- which powered a few lights and a radio -- to the "whole village development model" which provides a broader spectrum of benefits including community water pumping, power for health clinics, streetlighting, and microenterprise centers. One memorable project was in the Valley of a Thousand Hills in South Africa. There, SELF installed a satellite dish and 2.4 kW solar array that powered a school which received 20 personal computers donated by Dell Computers. All of a sudden, that community had access not only to energy but to "the universe of information." Another project was in the African country of Benin where SELF supported water pumping and drip irrigation, and hydroponics, fostering solar market gardens run by women's farming cooperatives.Recently SELF has been promoting new forms of agriculture in Masai villages in Kenya... using water most judiciously and effectively. SELF is also focused on e-cooking using advanced electric cooking devices. Bob discusses the great value of the sun in supporting the energy-water-food nexus and is thankful for the support SELF has received from foundations, philanthropists, corporations, and international aid agencies. For his dedication and important works, Bob was honored to receive the King Hussein Leadership Award which was presented to him by Jordan's Queen Noor. Jim went to Kenya in 2018 which revealed his true calling. He went at the encouragement of a friend, and in a single moment, discovered a need that would pivot his life in ways he could not have imagined. While on safari, Jim visited a medical clinic for the Masai people, and learned that they didn't have access to critical dental care. Since his wife, Jody, is a dental hygienist, he knew instantly how to solve that problem. Ten months later, he had founded the Hardwick Foundation, and they led their first dental team to Kenya. In this inaugural trip, 191 people were treated and 258 procedures were performed in a tent, at no charge to the patients. The impact was instant and significant, and that's the moment he knew his mission was much larger than himself. Today, Jim helps servant leaders go beyond their borders through a program he created called Magnificent Significance. He serves small to midsize business owners who want to live intentional lives and achieve superabundance through service. His experience includes over 25 years in executive leadership, helping his clients generate profitable revenue while taking a deeper look into what really matters by igniting a business culture of engagement and collaboration. Jim has traveled to 42 countries and experienced many different cultures. He is also a keynote speaker who shares his unique servant leadership journey from sales to nonprofits to safaris. He and Jody are proud to be the 2022 recipients of the James E. MacLennan Everyday Hero award through Up With People.
