To wrap up our episode cycle featuring "Off-Beat Musicals", Madeline, Julian and Emilio close in on a prolific songwriter whose career has notably dovetailed with film over the years: Paul Williams.  An unconventional public figure with the gift of gab and an ear for making timeless music, Williams left his mark on the 1970s, penning memorable scores for some truly unique movie musicals.  First, we cover 'Phantom of the Paradise', Brian De Palma's 1974 rock musical featuring Williams in a lead role, the nefarious music producer Swan whose deal with the devil sets the stage for a WILD mix of camp, vengeance, and glam rock swagger.  Then there's 'Bugsy Malone', Alan Parker's 1976 gangster film satire with a cast of nothing but children, yet another wild ride of fun performances and some era-specific songs.  And we wrap up the conversation with a look at 'The Muppet Movie' from 1979, one last off-beat musical featuring puppets with a witty script and several equally clever heartfelt tunes from Williams and collaborater Kenneth Ascher.  It's an earnest look back on the work of one of the more influential songsmiths of his era, with an off-beat musical performance of our own just for kicks!     We have a monthly newsletter!  Subscribe at sleeplesscinematicpod.substack.comIf you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. We had a really fun and special episode on the Upstate Golf Guys Podcast joined by standout junior golfer Bailey Baio and her dad Scott Baio, yes that Scott Baio from Happy Days and Charles in Charge. Scott Baio may be the name everyone recognizes, but he wasn't the star of today's podcast — today's star was Bailey. A standout junior golfer making a name for herself, Bailey is putting in the work, chasing big goals, and showing exactly what the next generation of the game looks like. We got into Bailey's golf journey, what first got her into the game, and how her dad made sure it was always about having fun, including the tradition of getting a cookie after every round. Now her dad is right there with her every step of the way, caddying for her and supporting her through the journey, which makes the story even more special. Bailey is taking things to the next level, committed to Providence College to play Division 1 golf, with her sights set on one day playing on the LPGA Tour. The father daughter dynamic in this episode is awesome. Great banter, real moments, and a genuine love for the game that comes through the whole time. RGB joined me as always and brought some great questions to the table too. Make sure to tune in for this one, it's a good one. In his attempt to distance himself from the increasingly tedious God's Not Dead franchise, David A.R. White tries out a standard action thriller with the finest washed up actors Hollywood has to offer. It's 2025's A Line of Fire, starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Jason Patric, Katrina Bowden, and Scott Baio. Cash (White) is a retired FBI agent, widower, great dad, fantastic cook, and patriot with amazing hair who everyone likes and is cool. When his former partner is gunned down at a yacht party by GTA Online maniacs on WaveRunners, her niece Jamie (Bowden) retreats to a safe house and calls Cash for help. He takes time out of being the greatest dad and man who's ever lived to save her, gunning down meaty goons with CGI muzzle flashes and computer squibs. Despite being the greatest FBI agent to ever live and smartest man alive, he seems unconcerned that every time he calls his former FBI buddies for help, his plans are thwarted by the homicidal drug cartel. Josef (Patric) knows his every move: casting his chess piece acolytes across the board via Facetime from his Southern California McMansion. Meanwhile, Javier (Gooding Jr.) traipses around his chaste fully-clothed Miami strip club, fielding Zoom calls for his drug empire over the sound of quiet club music. Can Cash save Jamie and his daughters (who are of course kidnapped) in time? Can he trust his former FBI colleagues, such as the Nick Offerman-y Rocco (Tommy Snider) or the fashion homunculus Joan Rycker (Eve Richards, whose acting is so bad it makes me question the order of the universe)? You'll have to listen to find out!

This new offering from perpetually busy Christian film auteur David A.R. White continues his “single dad action hero” era that began with 2020's BECKMAN. BECKMAN, LOVE ON THE ROCK (2021), and now A LINE OF FIRE are just a few of the many films White has made since the COVID era reshaped DIY filmmaking. Together, they show a man striking out on his own and reinventing himself, possibly influenced by his personal life, including a public divorce from actress Andrea Logan. Logan was a frequent artistic collaborator and business partner, and the two co-founded Pure Flix, the family-oriented streaming service intended as a wholesome competitor to Netflix. As prolific as he is, White inevitably draws inspiration from his own life, and it's no surprise that many of his recent films, including A LINE OF FIRE, portray him as a single dad juggling work responsibilities while navigating new love for the first time in years. In this film, former FBI agent Cash (played by White) is called back into service after his late wife's sister, also an agent, is assassinated by a crime boss's thugs. Supporting characters are played by notable celebrities such as Cuba Gooding Jr., whose recent fall from grace seems to have led him to the low-budget circuit, and Scott Baio, who alternately help and betray Cash. This repeated cycle of trust and mistrust becomes a tedious plot device, culminating in the reveal that one of White's own allies, Joan (a puzzling performance by Eve Richards), is a double agent operating under the name “Mr. X.” A LINE OF FIRE is slickly produced and competently shot, with bursts of gory action that push the boundaries of wholesomeness, yet its plot is ultimately forgettable. Still, it's hard to fault White, who seems to be having a blast making five movies a year and rediscovering himself in the process. #GoodBar #history #truecrimeIn this episode we feature a return guest from 2021, Deb Berry, and we will discuss the 1970s fictional book and film Looking For Mr Goodbar as well as the actual case that was its inspiration and the reporter, Lacey Fosburgh, who covered it.Travels With the Dark: Stories from humans in the “Limit-Experience”This “special” episode is the first in what promises to be a series concerning real occurrences of human beings when they are brought into or more aptly, up against “limit-experience”, a phrase from French and German philosophers that attempts to describe in the most general way what human beings undergo when they are thrust into situations that push them to their limits and conditions of maximum intensity. While originally this was intended to be a series in the “True Crime” genre  I wondered to myself if subject and theme could extended outward. It might not even only encompass the most negative aspect of human experience.I have been fascinated with the so-called "Goodbar" case yet I loved and knew about the 1977 movie and then the novel before I even knew that it concerned a real woman and her story - Roseann Quinn. It was genuine delight to talk with Deb on the subject and I honestly can't think of any better collaborator for this episode.Notes from our special guest, Deb BerryOn this week's episode, we're joined by Madame B (aka Deb) for a deep dive into the 1973 murder of Roseann Quinn, the case that inspired the Judith Rossner book “Looking for Mr. Goodbar,” which was later adapted to the film starring Diane Keaton in a sharp turn against her previous role as Annie Hall and a young Richard Gere in his stunning breakout role. While the book and film have generated much discourse over the years, most of it has revolved around Quinn's victimology, with little discussion of her killer, John Wayne Wilson, and his respective background, psychopathology and motives. So today, Mitch and Deb draw upon another book about the Quinn case, “Closing Time: The True Story of the ‘Goodbar' Murder” by the late New York Times reporter Lacey Fosburgh, to explore the lesser-discussed aspects of the crime which occurred on the Upper West Side of Manhattan during the height of an era of cultural- and social upheaval in America. Set against the backdrop of the early 1970s with the forces of the sexual revolution and second-wave feminism behind it, the Quinn murder was a perfect storm of social, cultural, psychological and even religious factors that begs examination of this complex landscape and its relevance to the murder.More about amazing Deb:Madame B (aka Deb) grew up in Chicago during the 1970s when it was disco balls, Cubs games, deep-dish pizza—and the occasional serial killer hiding in plain sight as a birthday-party clown-for-hire. Like a lot of girls at that time, she loved roller-skating, “Laverne & Shirley” and “Donny Osmond” (and she had the purple socks to prove it). But beneath her feathered hair and Bee Gees T-shirt was a secret obsession she didn't dare share with anyone—not her parents, not her teachers, not even her best friends: murder. In her public life, she swooned right along with her girlfriends over Leif Garrett and Scott Baio in issues of “Tiger Beat,” but in secret, she read “Helter Skelter” and devoured every detective show the ‘70s had to offer—“Kojak”, “The Rockford Files”, “Starsky & Hutch”, “Beretta”, “Ironside” and “Hawaii Five-0”, just to name a few. She came to see these shows not just as entertainment, but as something that held the key to understanding the danger that lurked right outside her door.Back then, being into true crime wasn't just uncool—it was weird, creepy, and not a thing that girls (or anyone) are supposed to be into. She believes you can dive into the darkest corners of human behavior without glamorizing or mythologizing it, and maybe even laugh about it now and then, as long as you know where the punchlines end.

"Joanie Loves Chachi" is an ABC sitcom that aired from 1982-1983. It was a "Happy Days" spin-off that followed Joanie Cunningham and Chachi Arcola to Chicago where they pursued music careers and furthering their relationship. After the initial curiosity wore off, ratings declined rapidly. ABC decided to pull the plug, and both Joanie and Chachi were written back into Happy Days for its final season. "Joanie Loves Chachi" has become something of a punchline in TV history, often cited as an example of a failed spin-off. Will the S1E1 boys disagree? Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

You'll detect, by his accent, that Scott Baio was born in Brooklyn, New York. He rocketed to fame as Chachi, the charming cousin of the Fonz on Happy Days. His chemistry with Joanie was so electric that it sparked the spin-off “Joanie Loves Chachi.” And let's not forget his role as the ultimate live-in-babysitter in “Charles in Charge.” Later he stepped into the director's chair and did some more acting, including a made for TV movie that was filmed in Madison. It's a film that's featured on YouTube. Scott said he loved filming in Wisconsin and working with state athletes. But he almost forgot his name during a quick promo at the end of the interview.

“You're in acting class and you're studying Chekov or ‘Waiting for Godot' -- and then you end up doing 80s tits-and-a**… You caught on pretty quick what it was about and where the power lay.” -- Actress Heather ThomasWhat was it like to be an 80s poster icon and sex symbol? Susan and Sharon welcome The Fall Guy star and “80s Poster Lady” Heather Thomas. She's an actor, writer and activist -- but may be best known for her “Pink Bikini” poster, one of the best-selling pin-up posters of all time. Heather Thomas had leading roles in television shows like BJ and the Bear, The Love Boat and TJ Hooker -- as well as the movie Zapped! with Scott Baio, Willie Aames and Felice Schachter. But her most famous role was playing stuntwoman Jody Banks on the hit 80s television series The Fall Guy. Running for five seasons on ABC, The Fall Guy spawned board games, posters, a video game -- and just last year, a major feature film starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt -- and Heather Thomas! Since her days as a TV star and pin-up queen, Heather Thomas has gone on to an extraordinary career as a novelist, political activist, organizer and fund-raiser.  NOTE: This episode was recorded Dec. 2024, before the LA Fires. Our thoughts are with Heather and her family, and all those impacted by the fires. Stay safe. Be well. THE CONVERSATIONWORKING WITH MONKEYS: Clyde, the orangutan from Every Which Way But Loose, was her co-star once: “He thought it was funny to keep grabbing my boob. I thought he was gonna rip it off!” And a stint on BJ and the Bear led to producer Glen Larsen tapping her for the co-starring role in The Fall Guy. WORKING WITH TV PRODUCERS: “All of them are crazy. You're not gonna find any normal ones, not in those days. Everyone was nuts. And they still are.”"Smile more": Early on, the ABC network executives were afraid that Heather Thomas wasn't likable. So they put her in a bikini. “I guess that made up for me not smiling enough.” STUNT WORK: “Lee Majors almost broke my nose once.” "I was good on rollerskates!"In preparation for a Fall Guy episode, Heather trained with the Los Angeles Thunderbirds roller-derby team: “They showed me how to ‘break my back' on the rail -- it was really fun!”Ted Lange -- Isaac, the bartender on The Love Boat -- was one of Heather's favorite directors on the Fall Guy.A GOOD DIRECTOR: For Heather, it was someone who brought her into the filmmaking process. For Lee Majors -- it was anyone who got him home by 5:00pm! THE POSTER: Once the show was a hit, a poster was the next big step: “It outsold Farrah Fawcett. I bought a house. I was thrilled.”DIS-LIKENESS: Heather's image has been hi-jacked and used for everything from lighters, to puzzles, to notebook covers -- to a pillow!ON HAVING A FAMOUS BODY: “My body was my living. That's how I saw it.  So I had to feed it, exercise it -- I couldn't have an ounce of cellulite. It was part of the gig. But I didn't care, I was grateful. I was making more money than I ever had in my life. I was a kid.”ZAPPED! -- Teen sex comedy -- or sexual harassment?  “They tried to get me topless, but my contract said uh-uh!  So, they used a body double. There's a big disclaimer at the end of the movie saying that it's not my tits.”Activism: “Ever since they said, ‘You can't climb the tree, the boys can' -- I was a feminist.”So join Susan and Sharon -- and Heather -- as they talk fly-fishing, Star Wars, David Letterman,Teen Beat, Shaun Cassidy & Parker Stevenson, “Gabor-lore”, Cliff Robertson's toupeé, organizing your phone by decade, not complying in advance -- and canoeing with Henry Winkler!AUDIO-OGRAPHYFind Heather Thomas on Twitter at Twitter.com/HeatherThomasAF And find Heather Thomas on BlueSky at HeatherThomasAF.bsky.social Watch Heather Thomas in The Fall Guy on Peacock, Amazon Prime or Flixfling!Check DontGetPurged.org to make sure your name has not been purged from voter rolls!Find out more about CREW at CitizensForEthics.orgVITAL READINGGet Handbook for A Post-Roe America by Robin Marty at Bookshop.org.Check out Men In Dark Times by Hannah Ahrendt at Bookshop.org.Read Democracy Awakening by Heather Cox Richardson at Bookshop.org.You can also follow Richardson's substack.SUPPORT FOR THE LA FIRESOnline at DisasterAssistance.gov On the FEMA App for mobile devices or Call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362Calls are accepted every day from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. PST.More resources at Eaton Canyon Community Relief.Google List of LA County Resources. AIRBNB is offering temporary free housing for those displaced by the fires. Start here. PLACES TO VOLUNTEERGoogle Doc for Wednesday and ongoing.Volunteer with the Red Cross.TALK TO SOMEONEReach out to friends and family. Take care of yourself:Pro Bono Therapy for LA Wildfires - Google Doc. More mental health resources at LARevive.DONATINGMaster GoFundMe List for LA Fire Victims Google Doc.Displaced Black families in Altadena Google Doc. Gofundme pages for EATON CANYON COMMUNITY RELIEFCONNECTVisit 80sTVLadies.com for transcripts.Join the conversation at Facebook.com/80sTVLadies.Sign up for the 80s TV Ladies mailing list.Support us and get ad-free episodes on PATREON. In Honor of President Carter and to learn more about his presidency: Get Susan's new play about him and his Crisis of Confidence speech: Confidence (and the Speech) at Broadway Licensing.
