In this episode, I spoke with Christopher McKittrick about his latest book "Vera Miles: The Hitchcock Blonde Who Got Away". Captivating, talented, and beautiful, Vera Miles was destined for fame. Within a few years of making her way to Hollywood in 1949, she starred in such films as The Rose Bowl Story (1952), Tarzan's Hidden Jungle (1955), and Wichita (1955). Her frequent television performances so enthralled Alfred Hitchcock that he chose her to be Grace Kelly's successor for roles in The Wrong Man (1956) and the iconic film Psycho (1960). She also starred in John Ford's The Searchers (1956) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). Miles's illustrious film and television career spanned nearly fifty years in Hollywood, and yet she is still considered one of the most unsung film actresses of her era.The entire episode of "Medic" that Chris talks about is available on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icO5-I4e0SQ

Before launching the iconic Texas blues-rock trio ZZ Top, a young Billy F. Gibbons was hustling through the Lone Star State with a band named the Moving Sidewalks. The small-time band had the chance of a lifetime when they opened for legendary rock guitar maestro Jimi Hendrix. Over 50 years later, Gibbons is one of the most recognizable rock musicians in American history. From ZZ Top's early work in creating classic rock radio staples like “La Grange” and “Tush” in the 1970s to becoming a global phenomenon with innovative music videos in the early years of MTV, Gibbons has been the guiding hand behind ZZ Top's evolution from the “Little Ol' Band from Texas” to pop culture behemoth with the 1983 album Eliminator, which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. As the guitarist and main singer of ZZ Top, Gibbons has gained immense respect among other music luminaries with guest appearances and collaborations with legends like B.B. King, Les Paul, Jeff Beck, John Mayall, and Sammy Hagar before releasing solo albums like The Big Bad Blues (2018), which was named Blues Rock Album of the Year by the Blues Music Awards. He has continued to lead ZZ Top in the aftermath of the death of longtime bandmate Dusty Hill in 2021 and shows no signs of slowing down from bringing his unique brand of Texas blues to the world. Featuring new interviews with Gibbons' collaborators, including producers Terry Manning (Tres Hombres, Eliminator) and Robin Hood Brians (ZZ Top's First Album, Rio Grande Mud) and Ministry's Al Jourgensen and more, Gimme All Your Lovin': The Blues, Boogie, and Beard of ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons is a celebration of a true rock and roll original. In this episode we get a chance to visit with author/biographer, Christopher McKittrick, regarding his latest book about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, "Somewhere You Feel Free: Tom Petty and Los Angeles." We open discussing Chris's first times writing/storytelling and jump straight into his work on Tom Petty. It is obvious just how much Chris enjoys writing but he loves the research part too. We talk about how he approaches each subject and what he might be doing next. We wrap up the interview segment with a discussion over some interesting things we may learn about Tom Petty the person versus the performer. Then Chris puts in a plug for supporting your small business bookstores when buying the book. WATCHTING/STREAMING: Walt finally gave in and started to watch season one of The Boys on Amazon Prime and had to admit he was instantly hooked. He also decided to watch a bad Bond movie The World is Not Enough, and is continuing to binge Star Trek: Enterprise. Chris said it's a tradition to watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles every Thanksgiving. He also gave big props to The Mandalorian on Disney+. No shock, but both Alan and Walt seconded his praise for the series. Alan went so far as to say the episode they just watched was one of the most cinematically crafted episode to-date. The western dual outside the gates is juxtaposed with the oriental, eastern dual inside. Alan also said it was a treat to see Michael Biehn playing a role. READING: It's no surprise, but Walt is halfway through reading, "Somewhere You Feel Free: Tom Petty and Los Angeles." Chris is so busy promoting his book, he admits he hasn't had much time for pleasure reading. LISTENING: Walt had three podcasts to recommend this week. The first was The Dirty Harry Minute, where he has been a recent guest. The second was a reminder to checkout SuperEgo. And the third was for The Dennis Miller Option. Chris gave two big thumbs up for the new AC/DC album, Power Up! Naturally, he has also been listening to Tom Petty's, "Wildflowers and all the Rest" deluxe release. With time rapidly running out for the guest, Alan skipped the regular shout-outs in favor of talking about the Sirius XM channel, Classic Rewind. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, they were looping the top 500 songs from the "cassette" era and Alan loved every moment of it. As a grown-up Gen-Xer, it's the music he remember vividly playing in his car as a teenager and beyond.

Hello friends! Had a great conversation with Christopher McKittrick on his new book about the Rolling Stones and their career-long relationship with New York City! I thoroughly enjoyed the book and could have chatted with Christopher for hours - like me, he's a dyed-in-the-wool Rolling Stones fan. He also resides in and loves New York City, and had lots to say about the relationship between the city and the Stones. A fun talk and a GREAT read! Christopher is a prolific writer - a good place to start is on Amazon, where you can check out his Author Central Site. His website is worth a look too - a great place to learn more about our guest.  And hey, if you aren't familiar with the Rolling Stones and just gotta learn more...well, do a google search and if you're lucky, something might come up! Thank you Christopher, and I hope everyone enjoys our conversation! Monte

This week, we've got a super-sized episode of the show (nearly an hour!) as I sit down with Christopher McKittrick, author of Can't Give it Away on Seventh Avenue: The Rolling Stones and New York City. Chris and I had a fascinating chat about the band and their long-term relationship with New York. All of them, whether collectively or as individuals, spent a lot more time there than you probably suspect, and McKittrick takes us along on the journey, demonstrating how the city infused itself into their lyrics, perhaps subtly at first in albums such as Goat's Head Soup, but certainly more overtly by the time they got to one of their best albums, Some Girls. Christopher took the time to run down a bunch of rumors related to the Rolling Stones, some of them started (as it turns out) by the band themselves. It's a fascinating journey for fans of both the Stones, the City, and Rock and Roll in general. If you're not already subscribing to the show, or if you're a new listener (Welcome!), here's the player/download link: And, as usual, if you're enjoying this show then please take the time to share it with someone else, and/or leave a rating on your favorite podcatcher.
