SEASON 2 - EPISODE 109 - KEVIN BAILLIE - VFX SUPERVISOR On this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with visual effects supervisor Kevin Baillie (HERE, PINOCCHIO, FLIGHT) in an engaging conversation about the evolving use of VFX in film. We learn what types of discussions Kevin has with filmmakers to determine how to incorporate VFX effectively into their projects, and we discuss his belief in using the right tool for the right job. While looking back in history, we marvel in the immersive quality of Ray Harryhausen's pioneering work on JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS and discuss the function of VFX within a piece of storytelling. We also discuss the increasingly prevalent role of VFX in production and on a perceived creative bifurcation between the production stage and the post-production stage. A frequent collaborator of director Robert Zemeckis, we discuss how the director's relationship to visual effects has changed over the years, and Kevin reveals the intent behind the VFX in the upcoming feature HERE. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

An absolutely classic, iconic movie, Jason and the Argonauts (1963) has captured the imagination of young people for 60 years. Notable for the wonderful stop-motion animation effects of Ray Harryhausen, the film also stars Honor Blackman who went on to her own iconic work as "Cathy Gale" in "The Avengers" British tv series and "Pussy Galore" in "Goldfinger."Sean Marlon Newcombe and Dr. Gary Stickel discuss this legendary film.
As we enter the summer blockbuster season and prepare for CGI overload, we're throwing back to 1963 and the visual effects spectacular of its time - Jason and the Argonauts. Jason, a man in search of a magical Golden Fleece, gathers Greece's best warriors and goes off on an adventure, battling hydras, giants, and a skeleton army along the way. Classic, cinematic fun. In this episode, we discuss the film's stop motion animation and why it's still so inspiring, as well as what modern blockbusters can learn from classic cinema.
“I like how horny Hercules is” The panel of peril return home from a voyage across the seven seas, wearied by battle against foes both human and… inhuman – skeletons and wotnot. Just after putting a big wash on for all their travel clothes, they settle in to watch this week's film Jason And The Argonauts (Don Chaffey, 1963). Jason (Todd Armstrong) and his merry band of Argonauts are sent on a perilous expedition to find the mythical golden fleece by his baddie uncle Pelias (Douglas Wilmer), who also sends his wrongun son, Acastus (Gary Raymond) along for the ride as a failsafe make sure Jason comes a cropper. Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCGiU98vFq0 Yelling “Jason!” in Heavy Rain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYQDnV092hI ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Acastus is a bit of a rotten egg. He tries to stab Jason and has to get in the sea when he fails. Later he grasses up Jason to the king of fleece island, but then gets bitten to death by the hydra. After briefly engaging the skellington children of the vanquished hydra, Jason outwits them by getting in the sea and then makes whoopee with the lady and gets the fleece all messy. What did the panel think of this week's movie? How can they improve upon the villain's masterplan? And who will be anointed this week's most diabolical? In this 10-minute installment, Psycho Bob the Cat & Shakin Shaner explore the films and legacy of special effects and animator Ray Harryhausen. Join them as they discuss "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms", "Jason and Argonauts" and "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad." In “Whats Shakin with Shaner's” recent episode of Hercules v Heracles, our good friend Randy mentioned that he first got interested in Greek Mythology from watching the 1963 movie, “Jason and Argonauts.” The special effects were provided by Ray Harryhausen.Ray Harryhausen was an American-British animator and special effects creator who developed the technique of rear and front projecting footage one frame at a time while animating to do stop-motion on a budget. This technique, which he named Dynamation, is still used by stop-motion animators today.
Kal is here to discuss one of Ray's most iconic films. In this episode he will briefly discuss casting, the creation of to props used for the film, compare the film to the actual myths that inspired it, as well as the films legacy --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/michael-kal-woodman/support
In the first episode of my Heroes Through the Decades miniseries, I'm starting in the sixties, and the crowing jewel of Ray Harryhausen's stellar career, with his trademark glorious stop-motion creature set pieces, in a movie I grew up watching - Jason and the Argonauts. Jason may be the hero on-screen, but Harryhausen is the hero behind it. From its basis in the Greek myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece, to Ray Harryhausen's early career and the influence he had seeing King Kong (1933) to becoming the protégé of Willis H. O'Brien (the animator of King Kong), Harryhausen would end up surpassing his mentor in every way and became a one-man behemoth of Hollywood visual effects, influencing Peter Jackson, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, amongst others. This episode was so much fun to put together and will definitely not be my last foray into the work of Harryhausen, a man who irrevocably changed Hollywood and defined the modern blockbuster in more ways than one. Gamarjoba everyone! Pleasure to have you back here. This is part of our myth series, where we will take a look at different myths of Georgian origin, that involve Georgians, or are just plain old awesome Georgian tales. We begin with Jason and the Argonauts, because it takes place in Colchis. I took the time out and wrote it out in my own style, in a more fast-paced, info filled version. My version of the Argonautica was 140 pages, so I couldn't justify reading all of that to you. Georgian tales will be translated and read out though, since I don't want to lose any info on those. Gamarjoba everyone! Welcome to Part 2! Here we'll be having a discussion with our Editor: Brendan Foster, about, well many things. The Argonautica for sure, and us going into how it applies to the Georgian identity with a series of tangents as well. (A Ben and Fiona episode - prepare for an Irish potty mouth and bullshit trivia)In Greek Mythology, he was known as the protector of human parcels, the letter guide, someone who always delivered the goods on time and to the correct recipient.I thought it more appropriate when my ears told me I'd heard someone utter the words 'Bringer of grief' when chin-wagging with our hero of the piece, Jas.Considering mine (and many others, I'm sure) tainted history with the establishment scandalously brandishing themselves as 'Hermes,' this was the sign from the Gods I'd been longing for. I misheard, of course, and the messenger of Gods persists in delivering goods to anyone, anything other than me. Anywho, let's talk nappies and skinny legs! Jason and his wonderfully macho Argonauts set sail for the golden fleece - Can they sail over here and raid Fiona's knitwear collection? Amongst those hideous things, you'll find a gold one, I'm sure. You'll find no muscle-bound juiced to the gills men here, just hair, lots of hair, great hair and the occasional stuck on the beard for good measure. The work of the late, great Ray Harryhausen, Jas and his Argonauts maybe stands atop mount Olympus as the best example of his wonderous stop motion - an arduous, painstaking task and something that would not have looked out of place as one of the 12 labours of Hercules! On this episode, Brian returns to Indicator territory with their 3rd Ray Harryhausen Boxset - this one including MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS and FIRST MEN IN THE MOON. More Harryhausen on Blu-ray is always a good thing.
