In today's episode, I meet with Jonathon Conant, a seasoned performer, and coach of the aerial arts. He teaches trapeze and aerial silk skills in one of the most enriching environments a student could hope to learn them in.  We talk at length about Jonathan's practice of guiding students to explore flow state as a tool for unlocking unrealized potentials and enriched self-awareness.  We also talk about a number of the small touches that Jonathon places along his guests' experience, from his first contacts with them by email down to getting them involved in cleaning up each other's dishes after sharing a meal. Jonathan uses the word Milieu several times in the interview. Milieu refers to the way we create and keep our space and what a significant effect that has on our guests' experiences. This applies even to their ability to assimilate what we have to offer them.  I'll have to say that this was probably one of the most fun interview visits I've been on so far.  I made sure to arrive at Jonathon's place early in the day to get in on his morning trapeze class. I filmed a little video of the class while I was there.  Make sure to check it out on our YouTube Channel on the Farm Tour Playlist when you get a chance. *listeners: please fill out this short 3-min. survey to help me level up the show: https://forms.gle/iporNXSgtfuoHSPJA I had the pleasure of bringing Latané Conant onto the show. She's pretty amazing and let me tell you why. Latané is CMO at 6sense (4+ years). Prior, she held sales and marketing leadership roles at Appirio (B2B SaaS, raised $111.7M in funding). She wrote a book called "No Forms, No Spam, No Cold Calls" (I read it, you should check it out). She's big on pushing the boundaries in B2B marketing which I love. We didn't get to cover everything during this episode so I'll be bringing her back on again soon. 6sense was founded in 2013, has 1,256 people, and is based out of San Francisco, CA. They've raised Series E ($200M total). The 6sense mantra: you can't guess your way to quota. For sales and marketing teams, 6sense uses AI to capture anonymous buying signals, targets the right accounts at the ideal time, and recommends the channels and messages to boost revenue performance. Here's what we hit on: What made you decide to write your book (HINT: customer and prospect experiences); What steps have you taken to really nail sales+marketing alignment at 6sense (HINT: I don't care where it's sourced from, I'm going to make sure we hit our numbers); If you're thinking like a salesperson, how do you hold true to marketing mindset vs. fall into sales mode (they're different disciplines); What's your recommendation for early stage startups that don't have a lot of data points and can't rely on trends analysis to make decisions. You can find Latané on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/latane-conant/ Find out more about 6sense: https://6sense.com/ This episode is sponsored by UMSO, the website builder for startups. For decades, Dick Conant paddled the rivers of America, covering the Mississippi, Yellowstone, Ohio, Hudson, as well as innumerable smaller tributaries. These solo excursions were epic feats of planning, perseverance, and physical courage. At the same time, Conant collected people wherever he went, creating a vast network of friends and acquaintances who would forever remember this brilliant and charming man even after a single meeting.Ben McGrath, a staff writer at The New Yorker, was one of those people. In 2014 he met Conant by chance just north of New York City as Conant paddled down the Hudson, headed for Florida. McGrath wrote a widely read article about their encounter, and when Conant's canoe washed up a few months later, without any sign of his body, McGrath set out to find the people whose lives Conant had touched–to capture a remarkable life lived far outside the staid confines of modern existence. His book is "Riverman: An American Odyssey."

Everyone talks about the "Customer Journey" but often operates in stage-by-stage silos of customer acquisition, retention, and expansion. What is the Customer Journey - first, it often depends on if you come from a "Buyer perspective" versus the "Seller perspective." Ultimately, the seller is trying to figure out how to turn the buyer's meandering journey into a more liner, faster buying journey...sounds like an adversarial relationship using this model. One interesting aspect of today's buying journey is how to optimize how Marketing, Sales, and Customer Success collaborate across the customer journey. The early phase can feel disjointed to the customer as they engage with a vendor using multiple "marketing-led" experiences that are not well understood by the Sales Development and/or Sales resource, who often do not know the knowledge and experience the prospect already has from self-directed research.Does having shared goals and metrics across Marketing, Sales and Customer Success impact the customer experience? Having an "Account Energy Score" may assist in aligning the functions across the customer journey. It can also inform the probability of a prospect becoming a customer. The Account Energy score factors in signals at each stage of the journey and weight specific actions such as content engagement or activities based upon the stage of the journey, such as Customer Acquisition vs Customer Retention vs Customer Expansion.Though there is never a "magic bullet" that can guarantee a prospect becoming a customer, being able to dynamically score each point of engagement depending on the latest understanding of how each signal correlates to customer journey progress is a material increase in insights versus today's standard models. In the "tough question category," is it the seller's responsibility to follow the buyer's journey OR to try and help guide and lead the prospect to make the best purchase decision? Carson's perspective is it is better to lead the buyer through the process by understanding the buyer's actual needs and being willing to stop the process IF their solution is not in the best for the buyer.Another key point is there is NO single customer journey or buying process, so it's critical to always be listening to the prospect and align plus help guide the buyer through the process. In today's "land, retain and expand" customer lifecycle process in the SaaS industry, having a 360 degree view that is informed by every signal that impacts the customer journey is a best practice. It is also a best practice that requires tight integration of your Marketing, Sales, and Customer Success team aligned to the customer journey. If you are interested in learning more about today's customer journey, and how to use their engagement as input to your forecast, and to better inform your internal resources on the best next action, this conversation with Carson is highly informative.

While a steady stream of disturbing news continues to come from Ukraine, new works of fiction highlight the ways in which lives there have been transformed by conflict. On this week's podcast, the critic Jennifer Wilson talks about two books, including the story collection “Lucky Breaks,” by Yevgenia Belorusets, translated by Eugene Ostashevsky.“Belorusets has been compared to Gogol in these stories,” Wilson says. “There's a certain kind of supernatural quality to them. I think anyone looking to these books for a play-by-play of the conflict is going to be disappointed for that reason, but I think delighted in other ways.”Ben McGrath visits the podcast to talk about his new book, “Riverman: An American Odyssey,” which tells the story of Dick Conant, a troubled and charismatic man who disappeared while on a canoe trip from New York to Florida. Conant was in his 60s when McGrath met him, and had spent many years questing on various waterways.“What he learned was that there wasn't really anything he was going to find out about himself that was going to improve things, and that the secret to finding happiness was to turn his lens outward,” McGrath says. “Rather than, in the Thoreauvian model, retreating to Walden Pond and staring into his reflection, he decided to go out into the world and to keep seeing new places and meeting new people; and by doing that, keep himself sufficiently occupied that he didn't have to struggle too much with worrying about who he was and what his own problems were.”Also on this week's episode, Elizabeth Harris has news from the literary world; and Lauren Christensen and MJ Franklin talk about what they've been reading. John Williams is the host. Here are the books discussed in this week's “What We're Reading”:“Young Mungo” by Douglas Stuart“Heartstopper: Volume One,” by Alice OsemanElena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels, read by Hillary Huber“Catholics” by Brian MooreWe would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. Dick Conant spent years of his life crisscrossing America by canoe, like a Mark Twain character. On land, he worked a variety of jobs and was often homeless, but paddling on a river, he was king. By chance, on a voyage which began near the Canadian border, on his way to Florida, Conant met Ben McGrath, a New Yorker staff writer, outside McGrath's home on the Hudson River. McGrath's piece about Conant appeared in the December 14, 2015, issue of The New Yorker this week; here, he tells the story of a troubled man who found refuge in adventure. Ben McGrath's book about Conant, “Riverman: An American Odyssey,” will be published in April.  Originally aired December 11, 2015.

On this episode of Best Seller TV, Scott Conant, author of Peace, Love, and Pasta: Simple and Elegant Recipes From a Chef's Own Kitchen sits down with host Taryn Winter Brill to discuss his fourth book which is his most personal to date. He wrote the book as a direct result of the question he is asked most often by fans and people he encounters: “what do you cook at home?” The book is meant to show a variety of delicious ingredients, things his kids and wife love to eat, and also to show that not everything is about caviar or truffles. It also shows the evolution of his career. Conant recalls how the first twenty years of his career weren't the easiest. At the time, he did not get paid for months on end, which gave him the opportunity to focus on his craft. Despite all the complexities and challenges of the time, those gave way to the simplicity he currently enjoys. He explains that “There's a new appreciation for simplicity the older you get.” Simple relationships and the simplicity of life are the ultimate luxury, Conant muses. Despite the difficulties faced, Conant was not in the profession for the money. What was most important to him was being able to cook the type of food he wanted. This book is a balance of the ‘then' as well as the ‘now' – an evolution of sorts of over three decades as a chef. Conant wanted to achieve that balance – not just with the timeline, but with the types of recipes, he included in the book. He did not want the recipes to be fancy, but “craveable.” He adds, “It's touching being part of someone's dinner table at home.” Conant tested all the recipes from the book on his kids – especially his youngest daughter, who he describes as an “incredibly picky” eater. Both his daughters, he says, are tougher critics than the New York Times and he describes their opinions of his food as “humbling.” In this episode, he divulges one of his favorite recipes in the book, which happens to be one of his classic dishes, and what his ‘grand slam' recipe is. Whether you are young, or you are 80, 90, or even 100 years old, that moment when you make that connection and you have a partnership with an instrument…is a magic moment. -Deborah Henson-Conant When she was growing up, Deborah Henson-Conant refused to take music lessons. All she wanted to do was figure out for herself how to make music, writing her first musical at only 12. A prolific singer-songwriter in her teens, she agreed to play the harp for her college band and that pivotal decision has guided her entire career. You see, Deborah figured out a way to make a gigantic instrument smaller, easy to carry, and electric. She is known worldwide as the woman who liberated the concert harp by shrinking it down, strapping it on and plugging it in so that audiences large and small could hear every single gorgeous note. Her recent TEDx talk chronicles her collaboration with French harp company, CAMAC which resulted in the creation of the “DHC” harp, now played by harpists worldwide. In this interview, Deborah shares her passion for music and especially for the unbridled use of imagination. Never someone to color inside the lines, she is a trailblazer for musicians young and old who want to forge their own path. Nominated for a Grammy for a long-form symphonic concert of her original music performed in collaboration with the Grand Rapids Symphony, Deborah was delighted that PBS stations nationwide released the concert nationwide. Invention & Alchemy is now available to the world via streaming as a fundraiser during the Covid-19 pandemic, Deborah's greatest hope is that the concert video inspires anyone who wants to make music.
