Like many Entreprenistas, Meg left the corporate world once she had kids and started to work on her own. She had experience with web design, so that's what she did, before she realized that having the perfect website is meaningless if no one finds it. So she dug in and learned everything there was to know about SEO and now she helps other business owners create websites that convert. In today's episode, we sit down with Meg Clarke, founder of Clapping Dog Media, a digital media company that provides done-for-you and done-with-you SEO Services. She shares why SEO is important, the most important analytics in SEO, her thoughts on AI, and so much more. “So I dove into analytics and SEO and trying to figure out how in the world people get traffic to their website and traffic that's not spambots and not random people. It's like traffic that really converts. And so I dove into that and really enjoyed it, I also realized there was not a lot of other women doing it.” - Meg Clarke This week on Startups in Stilettos: Meg explains why SEO is important (2:03) Meg shares her opinion on press releases for SEO (6:49) Meg talks about the most important analytics for SEO (10:42) Meg shares where the name Clapping Dog came from (14:53) Meg explains the best thing to do for SEO today (20:48) Meg's thoughts on AI (21:41) Meg explains how Clapping Dog Media operates (27:14) Resources Mentioned: Notion Our Favorite Quotes: “They're [Google] trying to get paid. Today on the show we have Meg Clarke of Clapping Dog Media. She is an SEO strategist who teaches creative small business owners how to grow their organic traffic and rankings so they can make a great impact and reach more people. She is also a sourdough bread baking genius, so you can look forward to several bread references throughout this episode! In Episode 45, we interviewed Meg where she talked about SEO for newbies, but today we’re taking it a step further by addressing intermediate and advanced issues that are more applicable to listeners who are somewhat experienced in this area. A lot has changed since 2017, so she discusses updated SEO practices, stuff you can do to prep your business and brand for launch and what to do if you are pivoting and need to start tackling different topics on your existing website. She also dishes out resources for finding targeting keywords and hidden SEO within your website and shares what she reckons is worth spending time on. Before we get into the meat of the episode, it’s worth mentioning the incredible strides we have made with our SEO since a few years ago. But, while we’ve done well, we also desperately need maintenance. Our traffic used to be at a low 5 to 10% from Google despite our volume of content, but now over 50% of our traffic comes straight from search. But, as we said, we also need to brush up on our SEO, so we’re just as eager to hear what Meg’s got for us. So, pull your notebook closer and get ready for some fresh SEO strategy! What does it mean that Google crawls your site? What are the most important parts of your webpage? How do you optimize your site for SEO? If you are scratching your head, trying to make sense of the SEO world and how to get found on Google, this episode is a must-listen! Meg Clarke, owner of Clapping Dog Media is passionate about helping small business owners as much Google-juice as possible for their site. And while we're on the topic of crawling, Meg has an incredible story of how she adopted children from Uganda. Tune in to hear the full story. My Guest: Meg Clarke Meg Clarke, mom to 3 boys, 1 golden doodle and wife to Mike, is passionate about helping women business owners make a bigger impact in their world by getting found by Google. She is an expert at connecting the dots of data to get your business found. Designer at heart, Meg discovered a massive issue when she tried to enter the web design space…her clients had gorgeous websites but they weren't getting found. What's the point of a beautiful site if no one can find it? Meg traveled the (digital) world and learned everything she could about how it works. She then founded Clapping Dog Media, an SEO company dedicated to giving small businesses as much Google-juice as possible. Episode Highlights: [06:32] I'm literally wearing a tiara ... I was sitting with my copywriting team and we were discussing something and I don't remember exactly how it came up, but basically there was a problem and I just snap solved it. And I'm like, "I'm a queen, why don't I have a crown? I should have a crown." ... And so my copywriters surprise ordered me a tiara and it got delivered to my office yesterday. [08:09] But then I stopped that when my husband and I adopted two children from Uganda. We had to go to Uganda for a long time and then when we came back, I just stopped working. [13:40] With adoption, with these kids building up their identity and who they are and where they come from, it's not so conscious when they're a biological kid, but you're like constantly saying, "Hey, you're a Clarke. This is your family. You're a Clarke forever and this is what this means." [16:48] So many women go through this transition. Very often it's that exact journey, right? They go from employed, to "mom-ployed" if that's a term-I just made it up, to "Oh my God, my life is broken now." [29:10] I have someone who's a blogger, and she's actually very successful and she gets cold traffic. And I was like, "That's so cool. She's getting all this free stuff." She's like, "Estie, I just want you to know that most of the time all I get is like $5 or a free hand cream." [31:00] When Google comes to your site, the first thing they do is they read the title of your page or the title of your website. Nine times out of 10, if you are a personal brand, or if you're like me where my name is Meg Clark, but my business is Clapping Dog Media, nine times out of ten, both of those are not in the page title. And I want to be found for both. [39:27] If you can figure out who you are, and how you want to be found, and make that evident in your site, you're going to find that you're going to connect with the people who need you. [57:23] My biggest struggle in my business is demystifying this myth of "Oh, if I hire you, my business is going to be- I'm going to be Oprah." And really getting over to people that SEO is a layer of your marketing. It does not break you or make you, but it's a very foundational part of your business. Today I’m talking with Megan Clarke, owner of SEO company Clapping Dog Media, about how starting her business helped her get back control of her mental sanity. Megan went from being a mom of none to a mom of three young boys in the space of 18 months. Becoming a mom of three meant that she left her agency job, but knew she needed to start working again in order to get that aspect of her life back. Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
Getting the top rank in Google feels like something only someone in 2004 could do. But that’s not the case! Search engine optimization is your friend, and on today’s episode Darla and Natalie talk with Megan Clarke all about how to improve your SEO. Meg is the founder and owner of Clapping Dog Media, a firm that specializes in helping businesses that help people improve their SEO. Her team of SEO all-stars help companies raise their profile and find the right clients for their businesses. And before she became an SEO guru, Meg was a graphic designer, so she knows how to work with creative businesses like interior design firms. But what does that actually mean? There are certain factors that Google looks for on your site. Things like how long someone spends on your page, or how often you have fresh content. And as Meg said on this episode, it’s vital to share your content socially, so you’re getting more eyes on it. And make sure you have your content arranged correctly for Google. As Meg said, Google reads your site like a newspaper. It scans the headlines and the subheadlines, so you need to ensure you have all of that content properly organized. Google EATs SEO for breakfast Google has a simple formula for ranking your site: Expertise, Authority and Trust (or EAT). So when you say your website is about something, it has to truly be about it. Clickbait won’t help your SEO. And neither will Google Adwords, actually, except for the opportunity to bring more eyes to your site. Meg recommends blogging at least a couple of times a month to keep your site fresh, and that the posts have to be at least 300 words, but the sweet spot is between 750-1,250. And as she says, it’s better to have one really strong 1,000-word post than it is to have five 250-word posts. Subscribe to The Wingnut Social Podcast on iTunes, Google Podcasts, or TuneIn
