For the two of you who don't know, Clive was one of the big guns in UK radio management. The King of Capital. The Duke of Jack. The Archbishop of Absolute. But then he went to Australia, and took a lifetime of radio knowledge and enough stories to fill your average-sized encyclopaedia with him. So very early (too early) one Sunday, when British Summer Time and Australian Eastern Standard Time conveniently aligned, we embarked on a mission to liberate and disseminate some of this knowledge and these stories from the Southern hemisphere. So prepare to find out how Elton John was responsible for him getting into radio, how he almost introduced Posh and Becks back in the 90s, and how he's not scared of Richard Park! There's also some consumer advice on how you might go about buying a major radio group, so if your in the market for one, you might want to make some notes.   If you enjoy the podcast, just want to give you a quick reminder that we'd be grateful if you would support us on Ko-Fi:  https://ko-fi.com/crunchandroll

Also, the head of Microsoft Flight Simulator - Jorg Neumann talks about the game, its release, move to Xbox and some exciting new updates coming soon! And of course your calls, truckies wanting to save money, WiFi issues, and TV advice - some of which will make you reconsider the next time you're complaining...

'We weren't willing to overpay for Champions League', but Optus' Clive Dickens backs football to drive customer gains - and subscription aggregation play for slice of $4bn market

Optus is backing football (the big game, not the Australian version) to keep delivering customer growth and retention, particularly amongst immigrant Australians – but VP of Product Development for TV and Content, Clive Dickens, says Nine overpaid for the Champions League. He also has a dig at the naysayers at Seven who didn't think 7plus could be delivered in nine months – including some of his staff, who subsequently left the building. While BVOD is booming, Dickens says display advertising will continue to “hit the floor” and publishers that can make subscription revenue pay will be those left standing. Which is why Optus aims to take a slice of what it forecasts will soon be a $4bn market with an aggregation play. The former SCA and Seven digital supremo thinks SubHub will help set Optus apart from big dog Telstra and the pack of hungry mobile virtual operators trying to nip its heels. But he's not committing to numbers just yet.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's radio ratings saw an historic result in Sydney, with KIIS FM's Kyle and Jackie O taking the title of the #1 breakfast show, breaking a 17-year streak held by 2GB's Alan Jones and more recently, Ben Fordham. So what does the result mean for the media and marketing industry? The team dives into the latest GfK ratings survey, bringing perspectives from media buyers on all five metro markets, as we wonder: are the radio ratings really just one big confidence trick?QMS won Australia's latest out-of-home advertising account, the City of Sydney, in 2020, but the changeover from JC Decaux's existing assets to the new QMS street furniture has been delayed again. This time, QMS cited mitigation against potential delays of shipping new assets due to COVID-19, with September now the date for the changeover to begin. So what will the new assets look like, and what will the proposition for advertisers be once QMS' gets its infrastructure in?Finally, Optus Sport's VP of TV, content, and product development, Clive Dickens, joins Zanda Wilson for a chat about the platform's content strategy. He reflects on the current broadcasts of the Euro 2020 and Copa America football tournaments and speaks about the importance of Optus' sport content as a means of differentiating itself against competitor telcos.

There's a big difference between a product marketed 'for gamers' and a product that has genuinely been designed for gaming, so this week I'm talking to two key team members on a recent product launch to get a solid insight on which column the new Optus Gamer Plans really sit in. No surprise, if they're willing to come on the show, they're feeling confident they've designed something that is the real deal and, once you hear the story I think you'll get a good feeling about it too, especially once you factor in tools like Game Path. But let's not jump ahead!I'm talking to Steven Manichanh, Senior Product Development Manager and Clive Dickens, VP of Product Development. Clive joins us part way through the conversation, so I kick things off asking Steven to hit that important question and help alleviate the gamer scepticism head on.
