He's won awards on huge brands such as McDonald's, VW, Marmite and Harvey Nichols. People often talk about Pete as ‘one of the nicest guys in the business'. Which we can vouch for. Fun Pete fact: he was once a Media Planner on P&G.We started as usual with the billboard at the end of Pete's street, which is from the recent British Airways campaign. So yes, you guessed it, we had yet more ‘logo v no logo' chat. Then we jumped into another topical debate, the potential demise of the DDB name. And all this before the work, of which Pete has loads. We distilled it down to four clients in the end:VW, Marmite, Magners, and McDonald's.For VW we got behind the story of the classy and minimalist Touareg campaign shot by Giles Revell.Magners was an exercise in collaboration with Illustrator/Artist: Noma Bar, who seems to be everywhere atm, but Pete was the first to use him in advertising.Marmite was the Christmas lights, a bit of love ‘n hate for the festive season. Most apt! While for McDonald's there were many campaigns which Pete worked on both as a creative and a creative director. We managed to cover McNuggets, Lights on McDelivery / Iconic Stacks (Creatives: Andrew Long & James Millers), See One, Want One / Search (Creatives: Phillip Meyler & Darren Keff)Thanks so much for coming on Pete.

Would you like access to our advanced agency training for FREE? https://www.agencymastery360.com/training Ever wonder why some brand podcasts blow up while others die after five episodes? Or why a few companies seem to build die-hard fans while other can't seem to connect? Today's guest specializes in helping brands create podcasts that deliver true value. He explains how brands can use podcasting to build real connection, not just rack up downloads. From breaking up with the traditional ad world to creating top-ranked shows for global brands, he reveals why consistency, authenticity, and a bit of weirdness might be your secret weapons. Roger Nairn is the Co-Founder and CEO of JAR Podcast Solutions, a brand podcast agency based in Vancouver, BC. With a 25-person team, Roger helps brands like Amazon and Sage create shows that connect deeply with their audiences. After spending over two decades in the advertising world at top agencies like DDB and Cossette, he's now on a mission to show companies that the real ROI of podcasting isn't downloads, it's attention and connection. In this episode, we'll discuss: What brands really want in a podcast. Why consistency beats quick wins. Audiences prefer audio podcasts over video ones. Why is that? Subscribe Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio Sponsors and Resources E2M Solutions: Today's episode of the Smart Agency Masterclass is sponsored by E2M Solutions, a web design, and development agency that has provided white-label services for the past 10 years to agencies all over the world. Check out e2msolutions.com/smartagency and get 10% off for the first three months of service. From Ad Exec to Agency Founder Before podcasting, Roger spent more than 22 years in the traditional advertising world and loved the culture, but he noticed the industry shifting. Programmatic ads were taking over, budgets were shrinking, and the whole game was turning into a race to the bottom. Around the same time, Roger started podcasting as a hobby, mainly as an excuse to talk to people he admired like Seth Godin and Stefan Sagmeister. When he eventually connected with his co-founders, they realized there was a wide-open opportunity for brands to use podcasts in a smarter way. JAR Podcast Solutions was born. The idea wasn't just to launch shows, but to help brands understand their audiences and create the kind of binge-worthy audio content that builds trust over time. What Brands Really Want in a Podcast One of Roger's first steps was sending out message to ten different businesses on LinkedIn. The second response he received referred him to the head of marketing of Sage, a brand whose audience wanted to explore wellness beyond traditional medicine. A few days later they sat down to discuss what a podcast could look like for that brand and ended up creating Well Now, a show about taking control of your health through alternative approaches and powerful personal stories. The show took off, so much so that it briefly outranked Oprah in Apple's health and wellness category. The key wasn't just producing episodes, it was research. Roger's team uncovered what Sage's audience really wanted and built the podcast around those needs. This is true for every brand wanting to launch a podcast: stop creating content for yourself, and start with what your audience actually cares about. Consistency Beats Quick Wins Contrary to what many think, podcasting is not an overnight growth hack. Too many brands think they'll see results instantly. The reality is building an audience takes time. The good news is that, according to Roger, the podcast industry remains incredibly friendly and willing to collaborate, which is a great way reach new audiences. Other important steps to grow include pitching your show to big platforms like Apple Podcasts and getting them to feature it, as well as the actual merchandizing of the show. All of this, however, will amount to nothing without the most important element: consistency. If you want to stay consistent, do not compare yourself with the big players out there. This is the biggest enemy of consistency and will only lead to frustration. Don't expect to be the next Joe Rogan in year one or you'll end up disappointed and unmotivated to keep posting. Instead of focusing on vanity metrics like downloads, Roger recommends focusing on consumption. Without a doubt, creating a podcast might be the single most important things you can do to build your brand. If your listeners are spending two hours a month with the brand, that's two hours of intimate attention—something no other marketing channel can match. Why Audio Wins Over Video While many companies want both video and audio, audio tends to outperform. According to Roger, this happens because listening to a podcast is intimate. It's you in someone's ear while they drive, work out, or walk the dog. It's “me time,” not multitasking. Compare that to video, where distractions are constant and attention spans are short. Unless you're a celebrity like the Kelce brothers or Joe Rogan, most people aren't going to watch two talking heads for hours. They'll sample a short video clip, but they'll actually consume the full conversation in audio. The portability of podcasts makes them an executive's favorite medium, because you can take them anywhere, from the car to the gym to the airport lounge. In fact, new research shows that people will switch how they're watching throughout the day. They may start watching it on their TV and later switch to audio while they're at the gym. The Real Secret: Authenticity Over Perfection Beyond consistency, Roger emphasized that the best podcasts bring personality and vulnerability to the table. Listeners don't want a polished corporate message. They want the real you with flaws, mistakes, and all. Listeners often recall personal details Jason's mentioned on the show, like anecdotes about Aspen. That intimacy is what makes podcasts such a powerful trust-building tool. The trick is to stop trying to sound like someone else. Early on, stop trying to be the next Gary Vee and see how much better authenticity works with the audience. As long as you're being yourself and keep consistent with posting, you can become that reliable friend that is now part of their routine and consistently delivers value to them. Once they're loyal listeners who trust you, joining your community - or even buying from you - becomes a natural next step. The Weird Side of Podcasting Of course, every podcaster has their weird stories. For his part, Roger recalled recording with a guest who had to set up shop in a hotel closet, surrounded by pillows and blankets, just to dampen the echo. Not glamorous, but it worked. Jason has also recorded a podcast at a hotel room, when right after a speaking event he was approached by two attendees who said they inspired him to start their own podcast and would go buy the equipment right that moment and wanted him to be their first guest. They saw the opportunity and took it. This is the reality of podcasting: it's not about perfection, it's about connection. If you're waiting for the perfect studio setup or production conditions, you'll never start. Get scrappy, launch, and let the consistency carry you forward. How Sound Builds Brand Trust: A Conversation with Darren Borrino - Part 1

“If you're going to be doing a commercial, for example, for BMW, where people are spending a lot of money on a Seven Series and it's a luxury car, but then you hear the TV ad or the radio ad or wherever you're listening, and that sound isn't recorded at the highest quality. Like, your logical mind might not pick it up, but if it sounds a little tinny or it's too much of an echo, you pick that up, and that really does build into the overall feeling of the brand in terms of quality. There was an interesting example with Nissan. They launched one of the first electric vehicles a long time ago, and when they put it out into the market, they found that people felt that maybe it was a little flimsy, it didn't feel quite right, like, well made. So obviously they went in to fix their upholstery, and they started making things a little more high quality, and consumers are still saying, ‘I don't know what it is, there's something about this, it just doesn't feel like a quality vehicle.' And what they did was they changed the audio. Through the speakers in the car, when you start it up, it will make a fake sound of the car starting up. And, all of a sudden, people are like, ‘ah, now it feels like a car.'” – Darren Borrino This week's guest is an art director at heart and an ECD-level creative with over twenty years experience, working all across the globe. He's led teams at some of the world's top agencies, such as TBWA, DDB, and Saatchi & Saatchi, and has won multiple awards for his work. He launched Inkfish, a boutique agency in New York that helps smaller challenger brands take on the big guys with sharper strategy, more disruptive creative, and budgets that go into the work, not overheads. He's endlessly curious about what persuades the human mind, loves ideas that actually land, and believes that the best work comes from collaboration and clarity, as well as a healthy sense of humor. His name is Darren Borrino, and in this episode, we'll be discussing how companies can shake things up using sound, the difference between clever and persuasive, and how to stay relevant in a changing ad world – especially in the age of AI. Stay tuned for a Masterclass in being different! As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available, along with other interesting bits of audio-related news. And if you're getting some value from listening, the best ways to show your support are to share this podcast with a friend and leave an honest review. Both those things really help, and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. (0:00:00) - The Power of Sound in AdvertisingWe start off our discussion with Darren's childhood impressions of sound, which include the Universal audio logo when he and his dad used to watch movies. “You'd made it home, you'd finished everything you wanted to do,” he says, “and you could sort of relax with a little bit of popcorn and maybe watch a movie and just take it easy. So that was probably the first time.” Our discussion turns to audio branding in the age of social media, and just how quickly things move today – especially audience attention. “People switch off very quickly,” Darren explains. “So you need to make sure you have a brand that has the right qualities, and then you match that with the right voice to bring that to...

Three awards have been withdrawn from Cannes Lions 2025 over fabrication of case studies and concerns around their legitimacy. In the weeks that have followed Cannes Festival of Creativity, the integrity of advertising awards has been questioned and what was once widely accepted in advertising awards, has now been exposed.DM9's “Efficient way to pay” was the most notable withdrawal as it won the Grand Prix in the Creative Data Lions. The DDB agency was caught using AI to fabricate news coverage in the case study and misleading the jury. Two other DM9 awards were also withdrawn. The agency's co-president and CCO Icaro Doria stepped down. Following the Cannes news, D&AD removed two pencils from the shop. However, DM9 were not alone in the scandal as other awards have also since been questioned. While the industry has been rocked by the news, many have acknowledged that embellishment, exaggeration and fabrication within awards entries is a common occurrence within adland. This episode features Campaign editor Maisie McCabe, deputy editor Gemma Charles and creativity and culture editor Gurjit Degun, who discuss what has led to this behaviour and what happens next for awards.Cannes Lions has since responded with new "integrity standards" to ban agencies that submit "wilfully false" campaignsThis episode was hosted by Campaign's tech editor Lucy Shelley.Further reading:Adland's ‘New Year's' resolution should be to revive its integrity at Cannes LionsLePub takes disciplinary action following scrutiny of Cannes Lion-winning campaignHavas Costa Rica's Cannes Lions-winning ad, Lessons of Shame, needs lessons of legitimacyHavas and World Vision's Lessons of Shame under scrutiny after Cannes Lions winDon't hate the player, hate the gameCannes Lions rocked by controversies over AI, authenticity and licensingDM9 admits faults in case study for Grand Prix-winning work Hosted on Acast.
