There's a whole lot of angst that goes with that, and many people are very scared about the process and sometimes get it wrong. So, Justus and his company wanted to create a better way to get buyers from property A into property B.They spent time building the idea and even had some of Australia's biggest real estate companies backing them. In the beginning, the company was working and managed to transact around 40 properties.But it was a tough time in Australia's real estate market, so Justus ran into many issues. One particular issue was timing. The market was going down, so they had to buy properties, try to improve them, and sell them quickly.They also ran into the problem of not being aggressive enough on the buying side, so they couldn't get many properties. Still, they made money on about 60 or 70% of their properties. But they also had a couple that really killed them.Justus believed the market would improve, so they sat through it. The market kept dropping, and they started looking for other opportunities. They began to look closer into the numbers, the unit economics, and what had been working. They realized the model was working pretty well outside Australia.His company decided to expand into Europe, but before they did, COVID hit. COVID changed the dynamics completely. Debt facility providers pulled back and refused to give them a loan. Their real estate partners decided to figure out the situation first, believing the market value would go down. The market turned out to be the opposite, and property prices doubled in the next 18 months.Lessons learnedWhat works in one asset class will not necessarily work in another.The real estate market dynamics are very different in the US, Europe, and Australia.You can't have regrets in investing. Tim Fung is the co-founder and CEO of Airtasker, a trusted online marketplace that connects people who need work done with people who want to work and have the skills to do the job. Airtasker's mission is to empower people to realize the full value of their skills–to create jobs, income, and purpose, and have a positive impact on the future of work on a global scale. The company's powerful messaging has paved the way for rapid growth and expansion. Prior to starting Airtasker, Tim was a founding team member and investor in telco startup Amaysim, playing a key role in strategy and capital raising. He is a founder and director of several web startups, including online custom shirt design business Joe Button and motorsport event management group Circuit Club. A Compelling Reason to Change When developing Airtasker, Tim knew their biggest challenge would be to get people on the platform. Once they started using it, they would see the value–but getting people to adopt any new technology can be difficult. The solution was to offer users a compelling reason to change their behavior. Most taskers (the people on Airtasker who offer services) were used to a pay-per-lead model, where they paid for advertising in the hopes that it would lead to a job. Airtasker flipped that model on its head: taskers can use the platform for free, see what jobs are available, and apply for as many as they want. Airtasker only takes a percentage fee once the job is booked. They also came up with a compelling reason for customers to try the platform. Unlike other gig economy apps, Airtasker starts by asking their customers to describe their problem (however niche it might be). Then taskers are free to suggest creative solutions. For example, if someone accidentally flies their drone into a tree, they can post on Airtasker for help getting it down. The community-driven model means there are also very few disputes between customers and taskers. Out of hundreds of thousands of tasks completed each month, less than one in 10,000 become disputes. Building a Brand People Resonate With Since Airtasker's inception, Tim and his co-founder have been intentional about building a brand around their mission: to empower people to realize the value of their skills. For example, their “like a boss” campaign featured a variety of taskers who don't fit the traditional model of what a “boss” looks like, but have been able to create a business for themselves using Airtasker. It's a message that resonates with their target audience–both taskers, who enjoy having control over their income, and customers, who appreciate the contribution to the local community. Airtasker is Australia's largest digital marketplace for local services. Airtasker achieved 6.7 million verified reviews of tasks completed across the platform and in 2022 achieved $44 million in revenue in 2022 with 40% year on year growth. Tim has been very busy in recent years, from going public 2021, acquiring one of their competitors OneFlare, who is #3 in the market and launching in the UK and US.We talk about the challenges that come with building a two-sided marketplace, how he achieved profitability (which is not that easy for a tech business, especially marketplaces), the challenges in today's tougher economic environment and I especially love his startup story that led him to starting Airtasker. James Spenceley is arguably one of Australia's most successful entrepreneurs turned venture capitalist, local politician and philanthropist. He is also someone Samantha and The PR Hub has had the pleasure of working with over the past six years. The three time Young Rich lister and two time EY Entrepreneur of the Year winner is one of the youngest Australians to found and lead an ASX 100 company, Vocus Communications. Louise Nobes is the founder of the Australian arm of 42 - a globally innovative software engineering and coding trade school. 42 is free to attend with entry criteria being that you must be 16 to attend and either undergo a strenuous 2 hour logic test (and pass) or a 4 week intensive bootcamp (and pass). An ex-social worker, Louise is incredibly passionate about supporting underprivileged and underrepresented people. While teaching at Flinders NVI, Louise became fixated on wanting to push into work of the future and how it would look to bring in the best educational model that focused on coding and jobs - and one that was open to everyone. After looking up 42 on the advice of a colleague, Louise contacted the French headquarters to ask if she could become the Australia license holder. Within 24 hours they agreed. Louise looks at everything with a lens focused on diversity and equality. She is driven by a desire to solve some of the really complex problems in society - one problem in particular being youth unemployment. Through 42, she's also looking to squash some of the statistics currently running through the tech industry. Stats such as only 25% of people in the tech sector identify as female; the number for software engineering dwindling down to 12%. At 42, 30% of intake are women, 40% are neurodiverse and 28% did not finish grade 12, all proving that 42 is open to all. Running for just over a year in Adelaide, 42 has seen 450 students pass through its ranks and move straight in employment via a red hot recruitment market. The learning philosophy is all practical without any theory with students working across around 200 projects during the course of their learning curriculum. With a long term goal of being first and front of mind for digital apprenticeships, Louise plans on setting up shop in Sydney as a second Australian market very soon with a goal of 1500 students through the door.
