A tree fell in Alex's yard. If it went the other direction her house would've been flattened, which would've been devastating if you had followed her odyssey trying to buy a home. Also, the unsurprising headaches that came with trying to get the mess cleaned up. Tik Tok is filled with a bunch of Columbusing! There's a boy band member who has to be happy Diddy is, rightly and deservedly, taking the brunt of celeb talk this week.
In the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a new public interest in health inequities research. With this new focus, there also has come new funding with many researchers and institutions clamoring to receive lucrative funding and recognition in the field, but there are no official guidelines to distinguish a health equity expert. In this episode we sit down with Dr. Elle Lett who coined the term "health equity tourism" to describe when privileged and previously unengaged scholars enter the health equity field without developing the necessary expertise. What drives someone to do vigorous exercise in a hot room packed with smelly, stinky people? Is sweating actually an effective form of detox, and does hot yoga really deliver the workout you think it does? This episode investigates three specific hot yoga brands- Bikram Yoga, Forrest Yoga and Baptiste Yoga- and explores the question of whether or not it's ethical to create your own trademarked yoga name brand in the first place. We really want to get through one month in 2020 without talking about "Zack Snyder's Justice League" but he just won't let us. Every time we get close to ending the month, he says something stupid. This time he's taken to "fixing" how the Flash saves people. Zack Snyder hasn't met a non-existent problem in comics he won't try to 'fix'. But we're not going to let this idiocy ruin all of our joy. The Miles Morales game is great. Kriss & Dpalm give a preview of what their premium discussion about that game will be. We also talk about not being ready for what Feige and the MCU have in store for us with Wandavision, WB making the obvious moves to drum up support for HBO Max with Wonder Woman 1984, Chris Claremont talks the moment that ruined Cyclops and what the future of the CW "Arrowverse" could be with all the cancellations. Dr. Seuss had1. the courage to make up new words, 2. the confidence that his readers would understand what these new words meant, and 3. he was a master of meter, the rhythm that is created when you arrange your words so that the stressed and unstressed syllables fall into patterns. There are a couple dozen types of meter, but Dr. Seuss used only one of them, anapestic meter, sometimes called galloping meter because it tumbles off the tongue. People often conflate meter with rhyming. But meter does NOT have to rhyme to work its magic.“What magic?” The magic of being musical. “Meter makes words musical?” Yes. “Even when read silently?” Yes, even when read silently. “So, what's the benefit of it?” When words become musical, they enter into the non-judgmental, pattern-recognition portion of your mind.“Non-judgmental?” The right hemisphere of the brain doesn't know fact from fiction; that's the left brain's job. Pierre de Beaumarchais understood this way back in 1775. “How do you know?” It was in 1775 that Beaumarchais wrote in The Barber of Seville, “Anything too stupid to be spoken is sung.” “I think you're making all this up.” Dr. Roger Sperry documented it in 1981 and they awarded him the Nobel Prize for it. “Oh… so maybe I should just shut up and listen?” Might be a good idea. “Please continue.” Bounty, the quicker-picker-upper. BMW. The ultimate driving machine. My client would not, could not, did not commit these crimes. If it doesn't fit, you must acquit. “Are those examples of anapestic meter?” No, anapestic meter is two light stresses followed by a heavy third stress, like this: Oh, the sea is so full of a number of fish, if a fellow is patient, he might get his wish… and that's why I think that I'm not such a fool when I sit here and fish in McElligot's Pool. And who could forget, The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer… “Okay, but can you give me an example of anapestic meter that doesn't rhyme?” And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold; And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea, Like the leaves of the forest when Summer is green, Like the leaves of the forest when Autumn has blown, For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And there lay the steed with his nostril all wide, And the foam of his gasping lay white on the turf, And so there lay the rider distorted and grey, And the widows of Ashur are loud in their wail, So I walk by the edge of a lake in my dream. “But you said Dr. Seuss made up new words and trusted that people would know what they mean.”You want to hear some made-up words? “Yeah, but not from Dr. Seuss.” Why not? “Because I won't be speaking or writing to little kids. My people are old enough to drive cars, drink beer, and vote.” Fair enough. Here are some grown-up, made-up words. The reason you haven't seen me out is because I've been Hiberdating. I type slowly because I'm Unkeyboardinated. Give me a bus ticket to anywhere. I'm going Columbusing. I can't remember where I went last night. I think I've got Destinesia. The doctor and I had a Nonversation. It was very Unlightening. I don't hang out with Todd anymore. He was always staring at his phone in a high state of Textpectation, so I Dudevorced him. You can't say Idiot anymore. You've got to say Errorist. I was so exhausted I fell into bed and had a Bedgasm. “Okay, I...
Episode 7: As you may have noticed, the show intro makes a few content promises. Well, my husband Thomas recently pointed out that I have gone off script and haven't delivered on those promises. In an attempt to impose order and make sense of this chaotic world in which we're living, I have gone back to the original plans. Don't worry, I'll definitely go off script again, it's unavoidable. In this episode, I will first explore the living in Colorado promise from the perspective of a values-driven business owner (myself) with Jordan Pryczynski, director of membership at a wonderful organization where I am proud to be a member, Good Business Colorado. Bonus, Jordan is a Colorado native and he has many Casa Bonita memories to dive into. Speaking of diving… did you hear that Casa Bonita is being sued by a professional diver for age discrimination? (See what I did there? Pun.) Casa Bonita cliff diving seems to be pretty heavily inspired by La Quebrada Cliff Divers in Acapulco, Mexico. Fun fact- cliff diving, especially cliff diving in Acapulco is totally, like, a thing in Mexican popular culture. The 1963 Elvis Presley film, Fun in Acapulco, is credited with bringing Mexican cliff diving to the world's attention. I don't know if that's actually true, it might have been on the scene before Elvis came along, he might be totally Columbusing the whole thing, I don't know. But, just in case, I watched the movie to prepare for this episode and I can't wait to tell you all about it. Anyway, ironically, the guy suing Casa Bonita for age discrimination is a champion diver and placed first in the 1970s in the Acapulco World Cliff Diving Championships. (Geez, Casa Bonita. Awkward.) So, Diving might actually come to have a significant presence here in Colorado. According to September 2019 headlines, USA Diving, the national governing body for the sport of diving, announced last year that they would be relocating their headquarters to Colorado Springs to be closer to the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee. There hasn't been a lot of post-move news about how USA Diving is liking their new Colorado digs, and it's not clear if they ever made the move! I can't find any news on it. I creeped on their Linked in profile and they only have one employee listed as living in CO Springs and their official location is “United States of America.” So, that clears things up. If you know what the deal is with USA Diving's planned move to Colorado Springs, leave a voicemail message on our shiny new website, www.casabonitapod.com! Later, we'll check out the available real estate close to the top-ranked cliff diving location in Colorado and we'll explore the cost, feasibility, and affect on your property value if you install a pool with a high dive in your backyard. Oh, if you want to take a look at the
Continuing our rexploration of the Caribbean, as we have revisited Hispaniola, another group that has been mentioned was the Taino people, their culture, where they existed and thrived before Christopher Columbus and his destructive ass decided to come stopping into town- who were eradicated. Time to end the practice of Columbusing- which has morphed to it's new form that still exists today. We’re back with more episodes! I am so honored to speak with Leah Thomas and Sabs Katz, founder and co-founder respectively of Intersectional Environmentalist, in today’s episode. We chat about several topics regarding how being an advocate for the environment must be in tandem with doing anti-racism work, how sustainability has been commoditized, and more. This is such an important episode, and I hope you learn from it as much as I did when recording! In this episode, we discuss: How Leah and Sabs got into environmentalism Why Leah and Sabs focus on environmentalism over sustainability How we need to move past zero waste and “mason jar” sustainability How to be more intersectional in your environmentalism and ask harder questions How to call out and call in individuals Why Leah chooses compassion over shaming The challenges of “Columbusing”— people reclaiming things that BIPOC or other cultures have been doing for awhile Cultural appropriation and its impacts on the environmentalism movement The future of Intersectional Environmentalist And more! Please join us as we discuss the so called white allies and their utter betrayal. These are the same people who feign confusion and dismay when people of color create safe spaces. It was already bad enough that they mocked and ridiculed us for our originality, while they secretly coveted the vary qualities that made us stand out. Once they appropriate it, they capitalize on it, and then give us the middle finger when we protest their columbusing of our cultures. Meanwhile, they demand that WE educate THEM about THEIR racism and corrupt system. Then, they accuse us of lying about facts that THEY didn't know about. Instead of researching these matters for themselves, they settle for not believing us and accusing us creating our own problems. Even the "nice white people" who desperately want us to forgive the whypipo for being so assholery cry salty white tears because we are now saying, "Hell to the naw, fuck that shit!" The people who make these types of accusations and demands are NOT our friends. Let me repeat, THEY ARE NOT OUR FRIENDS. Meanwhile, back on the block, we are being deported from the very communities & slums (owned by wealthy, white land owners and developers) we were corralled to live and survive in. Now that the weary whypipo are tired of commuting from the very suburban enclaves that refuse to sell us homes, they want to move us out of the city so that THEIR lives can be convenienced. In turn, we get pushed into the areas where the manufacturing plants have left and public transportation has been cut because they want to create luxury public transportation for the city gentrifiers. Confusion is bountiful now that we are telling the Democrats, "You will NOT take us for granted anymore and screw you and your candidates." Get ready because this is just the beginning, No more fucks are given. Why? Are you seriously asking me why? GTFOOHWTBS!

I grew up in a black community. In the morning my father along with 99% of the black men in our neighborhood, rose early in the morning for work in the San Franicsco bay area. Most black families owned their homes due to the G.I Bill and other programs for veterans. Today, we are being forced out of our home by taxes, joblessness and not being abel to maintain and upgrade our home and we have been forced to join the ranks of poverty renters. Is this part of the plan to divide and conquer and dilute black voices? PBS News wrote: No one is more vulnerable to the effects of gentrification than renters. When prices go up, tenants are pushed out, whether through natural turnover, rent hikes, or evictions. When buildings are sold, buyers often evict the existing tenants to move in themselves, combine several units, or bring in new tenants at a higher rate. When residents own their homes, they are less vulnerable, and may opt to "cash them in" and move elsewhere. Their options may be limited if there is a regional housing shortage, however, and cash does not always compensate for less tangible losses. Let's talk about the urban removal or Gentirification or as it is know today black removal from ur citeis and urban centers. 661-467-2407 and press 1 to talk LIVE

This week we're considering how Americans are "Columbusing" foods, traditions and ideas from other cultures. We'll also consider some great summer reading in our Book Look segment with Lynne Ruffle.
This week on The Nose, our culture roundtable, we'll tackle "Columbusing," the act of believing that something never existed before you discovered it.
