Arsenal show character to come back from 2-0 down to draw away to Liverpool, and there's a surprising amount to talk about given the relative importance of this game. Tabs is joined by Stef from @NorthBankPod for a doozy of an episode as we discuss the mood at Anfield home and away, why it was an important result, our character, Arteta's happiness, bad half / good half, TAA boo boys, dirty Arsenal and why losing 20 matches is a a deal breaker when it comes to having a better season. It's a sad day for Gooners around the world as Arsenal's Champions League dream was ended by PSG. It was a tie of fine margins, missed chances and outstanding goalkeeping, where Arsenal's current limitations were exposed and things that just didn't go our way,. With our cups half full Tabs is joined by Ian (aka @ArseCannonPics) to pick through the game and reflect on the Champions League campaign as a whole before turning half an eye onto the weekend with a preview of Liverpool away; a game that we need to face with pride and is going to be a challenge for players and fans alike.COME ON YOU GUNNERS!@ The Grove Everyone is Welcome!@thegroveafc@arsecannonpicsFind us on Bluesky, Threads and YouTube, and email us here: thegrovepodcast@outlook.com***Please take the time to rate us on your podcast app. It means a great deal to us and will make it easier for other potential listeners to find us. Hello Rank Squad! We have our Champions League finalists, after PSG joined Inter in the showpiece event by beating Arsenal 2-1 at the Parc des Princes to progress 3-1 on aggregate. The game might not have had the verve and sparkle of Tuesday's semi, but there was plenty to discuss all the same here on UCL Takeaway. Arsenal started fast, but couldn't find the killer blow to leave the tie in the balance - thanks to some particularly impressive goalkeeping once again from Gigi Donnarumma in the PSG net - and then Fabian Ruiz landed a killer jab of his own, striking home from the edge of the box after Arsenal failed to clear a set piece. Vitinha missed a (very harsh) penalty, before Achraf Hakimi made it 2-0 with a striker's finish, and whilst Bukayo Saka pulled one back and Arsenal had their chances to find a leveller, it was Luis Enrique's charges who saw the game out, with no finishing flourish from his former apprentice Mikel Arteta in the other dugout. We discuss the game, as well as where it leaves Arsenal ahead of this summer, whether PSG's transformation into the team we have seen in recent months makes them favourites for the final, whether João Neves is a N'Golo Kante regen, where Arsenal need to upgrade to reach that next level, and loads more besides. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
What a week it all comes down to this in the champs league both legs up for grabs who will make it to the finals?? PSG up 1-0 Barca and Inter tied 3-3, the 2nd legs will be INTENSE. Then in other news TAA is going to Real Madrid on a free transfer and breaks the hearts of all Scousers, but don't worry you still have Andy Robertson. SO much more to discuss, I hope you enjoy soccer heads thanks for listening!
The Bournemouth game was a perfect encapsulation of our season. A depleted squad, not scoring enough, playing on the margins, some good football and some awful football, dropping points from winning position, conceding from set pieces and VAR incompetence, and in general making life difficult for ourselves when we have the chance to do the opposite. But we're just going to have to put the Bournemouth game to one side for now as it really is all about PSG and getting to Munich. The OGs are back together as Tabs is joined, after a very long hiatus, by Mos to discuss the highs and lows from the Bournemouth game, Odegaard's form and, Rice's importance to the Team, our inability to score, and what happens when players minds are elsewhere and what it means for a Tope 5 finish. We then look ahead to the 2nd leg v PSG with hope and expectation that we can do the job and reach the Champions League Final. It's advantage PSG in the UCL Champions League Semi-Final, but it's still only half time and we are very much still in it. Jamie and Tabs are on hand to talk through what started out as a party at the Emirates which then very quickly had all the balloons popped. We discuss the atmosphere, the quality of PSG, the impact of Partey missing, where we went wrong, what might have been, how good MLS is and the reaction to the performance and result. We also try to understand what is going wrong with Odegaard and what we can be done about it, before looking ahead to the game nobody has any appetite for, Bournemouth on Saturday early evening.COME ON YOU GUNNERS!@ The Grove Everyone is Welcome!@thegroveafcFind us on Bluesky, Threads and YouTube, and email us here: thegrovepodcast@outlook.com.***Please take the time to rate us on your podcast app. It means a great deal to us and will make it easier for other potential listeners to find us. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway here on Ranks FC, and our first episode of the semi-finals, looking back at the game between Arsenal and PSG in North London, where Luis Enrique's side came out the victors, taking a 1-0 win with them back to the Parc des Princes for next week's second leg. We discuss it all in great detail - looking at a mesmerising first 25 minutes from the Parisiens, as well as the way Arsenal dug themselves back into the game briefly, before PSG spurned some late chances to make their lead much more secure. We talk the role of Declan Rice, the absence of Thomas Partey, a star turn from Myles Lewis-Skelly, the brilliance of João Neves, Ousmane Dembélé's free-role and how he picked up space, as well as the difference in experience between the two managers, the atmosphere and how PSG quietened it down early on, and loads more besides. Arsenal got what they deserved from a lacklustre and sloppy 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, our 13th of the season, and it's more points are dropped from a winning position. Tabs is a little irritated and Jamie is more sanguine, as we discuss how doing the bare minimum was not enough to beat a spirited and decent Crystal Palace side and how it doesn't really matter as we have much bigger things on our minds. We then look ahead to what is an enticing match up against PSG in the Champions League Semi Final. This match up worries Tabs but Jamie is more confident as PSG's strengths could also be their weakness; it's a hard one to call and all results and scorelines are possible, including a 4-3 ding-dong goal fest. It's going to be an exciting few days in the build up and fingers crossed it's not all spent on the TX!COME ON YOU GUNNERS!@ The Grove Everyone is Welcome!@thegroveafcFind us on Bluesky, Threads and YouTube, and email us here: thegrovepodcast@outlook.com.***Please take the time to rate us on your podcast app. It means a great deal to us and will make it easier for other potential listeners to find us. It was a good and easy win for The Arsenal over Ipswich (I suspect we've had harder training sessions) as they keep things ticking over for 2nd place and was pretty much exactly what we needed following the adrenaline rush of The Bernabéu and an eye on PSG; with the only issue being the agricultural tackling by some of The Tractor boys and their idiotic fans booing Saka for being kicked! Fortunately for us (and the FPL gurus) Saka seems to be fine.Tabs is joined by Kuziva to go over the key moments and key performances from the likes of Leo, Merino, Odegaard and Saka from the game and to debate what a "nutmeg" is. We also find time to laugh at Manchester United and Tottenham, before looking ahead to PSG and what is likely to be the most non intense, non-contact football game ever when Arsenal take on Crystal Palace midweek with both team having an eye on forthcoming priority Cup games.COME ON YOU GUNNERS!@ The Grove Everyone is Welcome!@thegroveafcFind us on Bluesky, Threads and YouTube, and email us here: thegrovepodcast@outlook.com.***Please take the time to rate us on your podcast app. It means a great deal to us and will make it easier for other potential listeners to find us. We believe Arsenal played a match v Brentford on Saturday but it seems people have already forgotten about it and can only think about Real Madrid on Wednesday. Well, we are here to remind you what happened in another frustrating draw for The Arsenal, where we equalled The Invincibles record (the drawing part not the winning). A frustrating but predictable draw for Arsenal who were very much playing with Madrid on their minds, where 1-0 should have been enough to win this game until Darren England made sure that wasn't the case . It's time for The Truth!Today, Sam and Dougie are looking at Arsenal and in particular, a big reshuffle in the boardroom that has seen Andrea Berta succeed Edu Gaspar as their Sporting Director. Berta was formerly at Atletico Madrid, forming a (mostly) impressive team with Diego Simeone, and also previously worked at Genoa and Parma in his native Italy. We examine what his record was at Atleti in terms of overseeing signings, discuss which positions and players Arsenal may look to in the summer under his stewardship, and scrutinise how the Manager-SD relationship works at Arsenal in particular with Mikel Arteta. There's a little bit of time too to examine the role of a Sporting Director in the modern game, and look at exactly what falls under their remit, before we round things off. So, is this the appointment that helps steer Arsenal through that final step where they lift a Premier League trophy? Will he mesh with what Arteta wants and needs on the pitch? Or is this simply background shuffles that bark louder than they actually bite? Well, The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Hello Rank Squad! Dean's back in London, so it's less of a Transatlantic Job this week, but that doesn't mean there's not still plenty to discuss. Today, we're looking at the Champions League Quarter Finalists, but in a slightly different way - examining who the most important player is for each of the eight teams remaining in the competition, from the perspectives of how they've played so far, as well as who is most likely to step up going forward. We take the eight teams in turn ahead of their QF matchups, thinking about star performers across the course of the competition, but also about which player their opposition would remove from these games if they were given a choice to do so - giving us some interesting names and discussions around how we rank players in systems. We finish by trying to pick a top three each, but we found that was a harder task than either of us envisaged to begin with! It's Ranks! If the away defeat to Cardiff exposed the most challenging aspects of the previous head coach's approach, the 1-1 home draw in the six-pointer against a dogged Cardiff perhaps did the same for Miron Muslic.A Pilgrims Podcast full house gathers to review an underwhelming home performance. There is some debate on the how and the why – not enough football played, too much football attempted? – but the chance to draw clear of the relegation places, at least for one day, was just taken. The limitations of the coach, team, and system are all reviewed as, through gritted teeth, perhaps (a big perhaps) this may prove to be a vital point. In Part 2, the rest of the season comes into focus—firstly in general terms and then with a spotlight on the upcoming fifth-round cup tie in Manchester. Is the cup a huge opportunity, a distraction, or is it both? There is then discussion of a reassuring fans' forum and a reminder that, off the pitch at least, things seem stable once more and heading in the right direction—even if, in the short term, that will most likely be in as few passes as possible. Finally, look out in the week for some stellar guests in upcoming Cup Specials. You can stick your blue moon… sideways. Friend of the pod and BBC Radio Devon commentator, Drew Savage, sends in a voice note sharing his views from the commentary box, offering his perspective on the game. The key focus is the impact of Ryan Hardie's injury, the team's performance (we've played better, but certainly worse too), and what this means in the run-up to a season-defining run of fixtures. They review a strong performance by a high-flying Rovers side, the pros and cons of rotation, the significance of the upcoming matches, and the overall dynamics of the team as they navigate a challenging season.Inevitably, the future of a frontline that was looking so positive is under detailed review. Can Baidoo show more signs of promise? Why do other forwards struggle so much with the Muslic method? Should the free market be explored, or are there better options closer to home? Finally, thoughts turn to the mother of all six-pointers at Luton and a run of games against relegation rivals—only interrupted by a certain Mr Guardiola.Never dull. It's time for The Truth! With Mikel Arteta starting to get some real heat on social media for Arsenal's recent performances and their lack of goal threat, Sam Tighe and Dougie Critchley take a deep dive into what's making Gunners fans so upset about the way that their team have played recently under their former player. The biggest question that's being asked is whether Arteta is being too defensive in the absence of Martin Ødegaard, and whether that has cost his team from creating chances to score - even given the fact that the club captain and chief creator is not on the pitch at the moment. This was meant to be a season of further growth for Arsenal, but given that City do not look as strong as last season in the absence of Rodri and De Bruyne in particular, it has been Liverpool instead who have seized the initiative to take an early lead at the top of the Premier League table. So, are Arteta's tactical choices holding Arsenal back? Are they suffering from an over-reliance on adding defensive solidity in the transfer market? Is he being too cautious with the youngsters such as Ethan Nwaneri? Or are Arsenal just currently underperforming across the board - held back by their numerous absentees? The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your midnight feast of Champions League content - after one of the wildest weeks we have seen in the competition in recent times. We start for a change, with Tuesday's games, opening with Sporting's huge 4-1 win over Manchester City - a parting gift from Ruben Amorim to the Jose Alvalade as City were cut open in transition again. Was it as bad as it looked? Maybe not, but the blue half of Manchester have some valid concerns, whilst the red half are ready to welcome their new manager with open arms. Then it's on to Anfield, where Liverpool maintained their perfect record in the competition with a 4-0 win over Xabi Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen thanks to a Luis Diaz hat trick, and some more excellent half-time tweaks from Arne Slot, who got it right yet again. Real Madrid were stunned at home by Milan, where Paulo Fonseca's use of Rafael Leão was next to perfect, and the questions about how Kylian Mbappé has unbalanced this team remain burning bright. Can Carlo Ancelotti turn this around or are the obvious holes in the defensive line too big to fill with superstars alone? We round up the rest too: Celtic re-announced themselves in the competition with a big win at home to Leipzig, BVB dug out another win in their mini-resurgence, Malik Tillman starred as PSV beat Girona 4-0, Lille and Juventus shared the spoils in France, Monaco stayed hot with a late win in Bologna, and Dinamo Zagreb smashed four past competition whipping boys Slovan Bratislava. Then in Part Two, we're onto Wednesday's action, which begins with Inter's narrow win over Arsenal that cemented them as genuine favourites and continued to pile the questions on Mikel Arteta about how to get the best out of this (admittedly depleted) Gunners side. Also up for discussion is PSG's devastating late loss to Atletico Madrid and how the Parisiens just seem to lack confidence the moment anything goes against them, despite a bright start here; and Aston Villa's fatigued 1-0 loss to Club Brugge that will be headlined by a weird penalty call, but in reality was a pretty reasonable result - Villa were outplayed in Belgium. We finish with a roundup of the rest of the Tuesday games - Barcelona hitting five in Belgrade against Crvena Zvezda as their front three continues to shine; Bayern's hard-fought but well-deserved win over Benfica; another clean sheet for Atalanta as they won 2-0 in Stuttgart; a first win for RB Salzburg as they shocked Feyenoord at De Kuip; Brest's third win from four as the Pirates set sail for Prague and plundered more points against Sparta; and Shakhtar Donetsk's Sudakov-inspired victory over Young Boys. It's Ranks!
