In this episode of the Get Strong podcast, Jessie Mershon discusses how to navigate the emotional challenges of the holiday season. She emphasizes the importance of preparing for family gatherings, recognizing personal triggers, and maintaining a focus on self-identity and goals. Jessie encourages listeners to take ownership of their responses and to create a plan that aligns with their personal growth, ultimately leading to a more confident and fulfilling holiday experience.   takeaways Holidays can trigger old patterns and emotions. Preparation is key to handling family gatherings. Identify personal triggers to respond better. Self-doubt often fuels emotional reactions. You don't owe anyone an explanation for your choices. Staying aligned with your goals is crucial during the holidays. It's okay to say no to conversations that don't serve you. Prioritize your health and fitness during the holiday season. Confidence can change the way you experience family gatherings. In its current form, Old Habits is part of the ABC Compass series, but as you'll hear in this interview with Alfie Faber, he's working on expanding the short into a feature length documentary. And gosh, what a film it will be if he gets it to a feature length. Old Habits is a delight, utilising the charm and vibrancy of the Sisters to expand upon a hidden part of Australian queer history. Watching Old Habits reminded me of my conversation with Julie Peters about her documentary The Accidental Archivist. In that film, Julie talks about the self-documentation of queer history in Australia and discovering her place in the LGBTIQA+ community. Old Habits acts as an extension of the opening of queer history archives, ensuring that Australian queer history is accessible to future generations. In this edition of Mistake of the Week, Mark Graban tells a story that didn't appear in any safety report or headline — it happened on a pickleball court. Early in learning the sport, Mark found his old tennis instincts taking over, leading to a very incorrect serve and a moment of embarrassment. What followed was a small but meaningful lesson in feedback, psychological safety, and the challenge of unlearning deeply wired habits. Supportive coaching, timely correction, and a friendly playing environment turned an awkward mistake into a productive one. Mark reflects on why unlearning is often harder than learning, and how leaders can create conditions where people feel safe enough to improve.

How to Break Old Habits and Take Life-Changing Action - Scott J. Miller

Insight Out

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2025 49:15

How can we shift our thinking in order to break a pattern? And how can we take positive action to make transformative changes in our lives? That's the focus of Scott Miller's new book, “Master Mentors Vol. 2.” It examines key insights from 30 of the world's most transformational leadership thinkers – including Seth Godin, Susan Cain, General Stanley McChrystal and more – and provides simple steps to implement the same insights in your own life.  In today's episode, Scott joins me to talk about the most valuable lessons he's learned from his own mentor, the concept of transformational insight, the subtle nuances between self-worth, self-esteem and self-confidence, why vulnerability is a key element of leadership, and more. “I think the power of transformation has the power for you to see yourself differently. It has the power for you to challenge your paradigm, your mindset, your belief system, to say, gosh, I always thought about gratitude in this way, but now I'm gonna think about gratitude in this way. Or I thought about what's next for me or my business model. They're personal and professional. I think it's really intended to help kind of shake you to say you've been in this pattern of thinking this line of behavior and just shaking a little bit to say, is that serving you well? Is that serving those around you?” – Scott (06:03) Top 3 Takeaways  A mentor can be anyone. “I don't think you have to know or be in an intimate relationship, professional relationship with your mentor at all,” Scott says. It doesn't matter that you can't meet with them for one-on-one guidance; a mentor is anyone who helps you understand how to improve your life, and in the age of podcasts and YouTube, you can get that wisdom in a variety of ways.  Try to assume positive intent. Everybody makes mistakes, and sometimes even the most well-intended words come out wrong. A person's words say more about them than they do about you.  Self-worth is inherent and unchanging. “Self-esteem and your self-confidence ebbs and flows based on your sense of self and the kind of relationships you're in and the things that you do that you value or don't value,” Scott says. “But your self-worth cannot be changed and no one else can change it.” In This Episode (01:13) Why you don't need to meet your mentor to benefit from their wisdom (05:21) Scott's definition of a transformational insight (07:14) The practical applications of insights, and using them to transform your life (11:30) Bobby Herrera's life-changing bus ride (22:50) Self-worth vs self-esteem vs self-confidence (31:51) “Your future truth should be your present.” (36:03) BJ Fogg and the power of tiny pattern-breaking habits Resources & Links Billy Samoa  https://billysamoa.com/ https://www.facebook.com/BillySamoaSaleebey/ https://twitter.com/BillySamoa https://www.instagram.com/billybelieve/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjQ9RSxYqDS4_VxBHNyQJw https://www.linkedin.com/in/billysamoa/ https://billysamoa.com/podcast-archive/ https://billysamoa.com/video-carousel/ https://billysamoa.com/blog-with-sidebar/ Scott Miller https://www.scottjeffreymiller.com/ https://www.facebook.com/scottmillerj1 https://twitter.com/scottmillerj1 https://www.instagram.com/scottjeffreymiller/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottmillerj1/ Mentioned https://tinyhabits.com/book/ https://bobby-herrera.com/ https://www.franklincovey.com/speakers-bureau/sean-covey/ This is an encore episode and was originally published on August 26, 2022 Learn more about your ad choices. After 10 months of consistent progress, one of my clients recently found herself drinking every day for two weeks. In this episode, I walk you through the private coaching conversation we had—what really caused the setback, how she responded, and why it had nothing to do with alcohol. If you've ever told yourself “I should be farther along by now,” or felt the crushing weight of shame after slipping into old patterns, this episode is a must-listen. You'll learn how to recognize when you're caught in a thinking problem—not a drinking problem—and how to respond in a way that propels you forward instead of holding you back. What You'll Learn: Why over-drinking isn't a sign of failure—but an invitation to go deeper The biological reason why stress makes you revert to old coping habits How thoughts like “I don't have enough time” silently sabotage your behavior Why the perception of failure activates the “kill-switch” for your motivation The power of slowing down, asking for help, and telling yourself the truth Key Insight: You can't change your drinking without changing your thinking. And you can't change your thinking if your body is in a stress response. Emotional sobriety means learning to create enough internal safety that you can question your own thoughts—without collapsing into shame.   —Want daily updates from me? Join us for a transformative meditation journey where the host guides you through the liberating practice of "conflagration" - setting fire to patterns, habits, and attachments that no longer serve your highest purpose. "What we're working on is lighting flames to release patterns that no longer serve us. It's time for spiritual spring cleaning!" With warmth and vulnerability, the host shares her own decluttering struggle: "There were these roller hockey skates from when my kids played roller hockey. They've been worn to death, but I could not part with them. These skates have been around 15 years, and it was just crazy impossible for me to let them go!" This delightful confession includes the momentshe put a lamp outside only to bring it back in minutes later - "My daughter scolded me, 'Mom, you can't declutter and then bring it back inside!'" Through a gentle chakra-by-chakra meditation, you are invited to: Clear your root chakra of "guck" that clings to things you no longer need Flow orange energy through your sacral chakra to release money blocks and creative stagnation Infuse your solar plexus with yellow light to improve self-care practices Open your heart to forgiveness with healing green energy Transform your communication in the throat chakra by examining "What words would you like to remove from your vocabulary?" Free your third eye from others' thoughts and expectations Connect to source through your crown chakra with "golden lovely light" "We're all being called to release what doesn't work anymore," the host explains. "In this new fifth-dimensional reality, desires become manifest so much more quickly and things we've been asking for happen much faster." The episode concludes with a powerful visualization of a beach bonfire where you can safely toss whatever no longer serves you. "As you go about your day today, just keep checking in. What could I let go of? What could be different? What do I no longer require?" Perfect for spiritual seekers ready to create space for new abundance through the simple yet profound practice of intentional release.
