Last week, the greats of UK media gathered in London to celebrate the Campaign Media Awards 2025. The coveted Commercial Team of the Year award went to LADbible while Spark Foundry's Mondelez Team took home Agency Team of the Year. The winning Campaign of the Year was awarded to PHD and "Stream of (un)consciousness" for the British Heart Foundation. The gaming campaign worked with Twitch creators, interrupting their streams to teach viewers how to do CPR, and the results were powerful, with someone's life being saved after a viewer saw one streamer's CPR segment. Judges said they couldn't “wish or hope for more for a client in this sector.”In this bonus episode we are chatting to the brains behind the campaign, Tess Gullis, gaming business director at PHD. We discuss how the campaign is successful in its simplicity, the misconceptions that still exist from advertisers and answer why brands are overcomplicating gaming.Hosted by Campaign tech editor Lucy Shelley, this episode also features deputy media editor Shauna Lewis.View all the winners here. This week our guest is Psychotherapist Mel Meik who has worked for the British Heart Foundation so is very knowledgeable about heart health She shares some life saving information in this episode In this episode: As a child Mel had a tragic exposure to alcohol-related trauma: At six years old, her mother survived a car accident caused by a drunk driver, which deeply impacted her views on alcohol and drink-driving. She also had her drink spiked once, reinforcing her need to stay in control. She is grateful for her "off switch" that prevents excessive drinking. Mel shared her knowledge of Heart disease which  is the world's leading cause of death. It increases blood pressure and weight. It also raises risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. It can damage the heart muscle and cause abnormal heart rhythms and of course... Drinking large amounts in one go can dangerously slow heart rate and breathing. Twice as many women die from heart disease as from breast cancer and Women's heart attack symptoms are often different and overlooked – we are more likely to be stoic and brush off the symptoms if they are not too severe I asked Mel to describe the key symptoms in women: Chest pain, breathlessness, sweating, nausea (often for months before an attack). Pain in the left arm, feeling overly tired or weak. Her heart health tips are to monitor blood pressure regularly (2-3 times per week). Stay active (even walking helps). Eat a healthy diet (fruits, vegetables, protein). Avoid smoking—a major heart disease contributor. We talked about our mutual friend Helen who has been with Tribe Sober for just over a year Mel has been friends with Helen for over 20 years so was able to describe her journey into dependence and her transformation as she ditched the drink and began to thrive in sobriety Helen is now happy, healthy, and inspiring others as a Tribe Sober Cheerleader Mel explained how she's seen Helen's life open up – her newfound friendships and travel plans (Copenhagen, Paris, South Africa) reflect her growth. Mel's childhood trauma pushed her toward becoming a psychotherapist. Trained for three years while working full-time. Completed 200+ hours of client work and three years of personal therapy. Specializes in humanistic and integrative psychotherapy. Believes people are healed in relationships. I asked Mel how psychotherapy could help people in recovery Mel believes that it Helps address root causes of drinking (trauma, stress, avoidance). Can also uncover developmental trauma from childhood. Recommends additional support (e.g., community like Tribe Sober). She examines the historical inequalities in the diagnosis and treatment of women, particularly in the area of heart disease. There is an abiding myth that men are much more likely to suffer heart attacks than women, but heart disease is the number one killer of women in the US, and the British Heart Foundation estimates that nearly 10,000 British women would still be alive over the last decade alone had they received the same quality of care as men. Lucinda and Emily are joined by Charmaine Griffiths, chief executive of the British Heart Foundation, to reflect on the voluntary sector's female-dominated workforce and the challenges facing women on their path to senior leadership positions.Charmaine stresses her conviction that charities need to be representative of the communities they exist to support. She describes heart disease as a disease of inequality, reflected in the fact that only one in eight cardiologists are women. She acknowledges that more work needs to be done to level the professional playing field for women and minority groups within the voluntary sector, but warns there are few quick fixes to effect the necessary culture changes. Also in the episode, news editor Andy Ricketts recounts how an appeal led by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations to uplift public service contracts as costs rise appears to have fallen on deaf ears at the Treasury.Do you have stories of people whose lives have been transformed for the better thanks to your charity? If so, we'd like to hear them! All it takes is a short voice message to be featured on this podcast.
