The On The Whistle crew return to break down a chaotic game at Anfield that could have gone horribly wrong… but didn't. We dissect a disastrous first half that had latter-day Wenger vibes before the boys fought back with spirit, grit, and a bit of quality. ✅ Martinelli masterclass ✅ Merino's moment of magic… and madness ✅ Odegaard signs of life ✅ Raya and Kiwior concerns ✅ Why this result proves Arsenal's mentality is rock solid We also cover what's next for the Gunners with Merino suspended, Trossard potentially injured, and Kai Havertz lurking for a big return. Oh… and we definitely have some words for anyone claiming Spurs or United have had a better season than us. Listen, rate, and subscribe!
Arsenal clawed back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with champions Liverpool at Anfield. This was about Arsenal's resilience, but their sluggish first half and defensive frailties nearly cost them dearly.Despite a disjointed start-deflated after their Champions League exit-Arsenal showed character after halftime. Martinelli's header sparked hope, and Merino's rebound finish leveled the score. Yet, defensive lapses and Merino's late red card left Arsenal hanging on, with Odegaard almost snatching a winner in stoppage time.Liverpool's early dominance and Gakpo's opener exposed Arsenal's back line, and Diaz's quick follow-up left the Gunners reeling. But Arsenal's fightback, even with ten men, halted Liverpool's celebrations and extended their unbeaten away run, though doubts linger over their top-five finish hopes. While Martinelli's sharpness and Merino's impact offered positives, Arsenal's inconsistency in big moments persists. Liverpool, meanwhile, saw a party atmosphere soured by a late disallowed goal. Now an even bigger challenge is upon as we could potentially lose 3 players in addition - Merino suspension and Trossard and Rice injury doubts. Let's say a prayer for this team and hope for the best. Hoping for some more good news…until then —Up The Arsenal!
I hate reaction. I like action."
Hello Rank Squad! We have our Champions League finalists, after PSG joined Inter in the showpiece event by beating Arsenal 2-1 at the Parc des Princes to progress 3-1 on aggregate. The game might not have had the verve and sparkle of Tuesday's semi, but there was plenty to discuss all the same here on UCL Takeaway. Arsenal started fast, but couldn't find the killer blow to leave the tie in the balance - thanks to some particularly impressive goalkeeping once again from Gigi Donnarumma in the PSG net - and then Fabian Ruiz landed a killer jab of his own, striking home from the edge of the box after Arsenal failed to clear a set piece. Vitinha missed a (very harsh) penalty, before Achraf Hakimi made it 2-0 with a striker's finish, and whilst Bukayo Saka pulled one back and Arsenal had their chances to find a leveller, it was Luis Enrique's charges who saw the game out, with no finishing flourish from his former apprentice Mikel Arteta in the other dugout. We discuss the game, as well as where it leaves Arsenal ahead of this summer, whether PSG's transformation into the team we have seen in recent months makes them favourites for the final, whether João Neves is a N'Golo Kante regen, where Arsenal need to upgrade to reach that next level, and loads more besides. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
The Bournemouth game was a perfect encapsulation of our season. A depleted squad, not scoring enough, playing on the margins, some good football and some awful football, dropping points from winning position, conceding from set pieces and VAR incompetence, and in general making life difficult for ourselves when we have the chance to do the opposite. But we're just going to have to put the Bournemouth game to one side for now as it really is all about PSG and getting to Munich. The OGs are back together as Tabs is joined, after a very long hiatus, by Mos to discuss the highs and lows from the Bournemouth game, Odegaard's form and, Rice's importance to the Team, our inability to score, and what happens when players minds are elsewhere and what it means for a Tope 5 finish. We then look ahead to the 2nd leg v PSG with hope and expectation that we can do the job and reach the Champions League Final. Arsenal are licking wounds after a 1-0 home loss to PSG, and Pedro's back with Jacob Hawley to sift through the Champions League aftermath. They dive deep into the Odegaard discourse: is the criticism fair or is the captain just carrying more than we know? There's talk of midfield rotations, the brutal learning curve of Champions League knockout football, and whether the atmosphere hype is helping or hurting. They reflect on the TIFO drama, revisit the madness of Inter vs. Barcelona, and preview how Arsenal can turn the tide in Paris with Partey, tactical tweaks, and a little less desperation. Plus: striker shopping gets serious. Is it time for the Gyokeres hammer? Or is Sesko the smart long-term bet? We hope you ENJOY this. Thank you. It's advantage PSG in the UCL Champions League Semi-Final, but it's still only half time and we are very much still in it. Jamie and Tabs are on hand to talk through what started out as a party at the Emirates which then very quickly had all the balloons popped. We discuss the atmosphere, the quality of PSG, the impact of Partey missing, where we went wrong, what might have been, how good MLS is and the reaction to the performance and result. We also try to understand what is going wrong with Odegaard and what we can be done about it, before looking ahead to the game nobody has any appetite for, Bournemouth on Saturday early evening.COME ON YOU GUNNERS!@ The Grove Everyone is Welcome!@thegroveafcFind us on Bluesky, Threads and YouTube, and email us here: thegrovepodcast@outlook.com.***Please take the time to rate us on your podcast app. It means a great deal to us and will make it easier for other potential listeners to find us.

There's a section on Merino at 8, his progression over the past several weeks, and how he played 8 almost like 9. The right hand side is discussed with White returning to partner Saka and Odegaard. Saka's near explosion is covered as well as Rice playing 6. There's a bit on the red card, and the goals, and some individual performances like Leo and Kiwior. Broadcaster and passionate Arsenal fan Harry Symeou breaks down Arsenal's dominant 4-0 win over Ipswich Town! Goals from Leandro Trossard (2), Gabriel Martinelli, and Ethan Nwaneri sealed an emphatic performance as the Gunners continue to build momentum. In this match reaction, we dive into:
It's time for The Truth!Today, Sam and Dougie are looking at Arsenal and in particular, a big reshuffle in the boardroom that has seen Andrea Berta succeed Edu Gaspar as their Sporting Director. Berta was formerly at Atletico Madrid, forming a (mostly) impressive team with Diego Simeone, and also previously worked at Genoa and Parma in his native Italy. We examine what his record was at Atleti in terms of overseeing signings, discuss which positions and players Arsenal may look to in the summer under his stewardship, and scrutinise how the Manager-SD relationship works at Arsenal in particular with Mikel Arteta. There's a little bit of time too to examine the role of a Sporting Director in the modern game, and look at exactly what falls under their remit, before we round things off. So, is this the appointment that helps steer Arsenal through that final step where they lift a Premier League trophy? Will he mesh with what Arteta wants and needs on the pitch? Or is this simply background shuffles that bark louder than they actually bite? Well, The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Hello Rank Squad! Dean's back in London, so it's less of a Transatlantic Job this week, but that doesn't mean there's not still plenty to discuss. Today, we're looking at the Champions League Quarter Finalists, but in a slightly different way - examining who the most important player is for each of the eight teams remaining in the competition, from the perspectives of how they've played so far, as well as who is most likely to step up going forward. We take the eight teams in turn ahead of their QF matchups, thinking about star performers across the course of the competition, but also about which player their opposition would remove from these games if they were given a choice to do so - giving us some interesting names and discussions around how we rank players in systems. We finish by trying to pick a top three each, but we found that was a harder task than either of us envisaged to begin with! It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

It has been too long of a break and we appologize for that. To make it up, Adam and Scott are coming in with some potential hot take topics here. The duo starts out with a good hypothetical: which players in the world right now would you have serious considerations to replace Martin Odegaard at Arsenal?Adam went with the following: Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, maybe Cole Palmer but not really and a whole bunch of not really sure there is better options.Scott went with the following: Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Pedri, Jude BellinghamThis is a fun exercise to do because I think you start realizing that while Odegaard might not be the best player in the position, the number of players that are for sure an upgrade, plus don't have some other flaw in their game like their age that tilts things against them, is quite hard. This digs into some of the bigger issues that we have with player discussion in general, especially how familiarity breeds contempt and a bit of grass is always greener with other players. Scott went deep into this topic if you haven't seen it yet, it is worth checking out. With Saka back on the grass and Scott with egg on his face for his pessimism, the next question is how do Arsenal set up and how do they go about setting up for the rest of the season? Also, how do they prioritize things while they are mostly safe in second place and set for Champions League qualification while juggling the Champions League?Should Arsenal move Odegaard? Move Nwaneri? Move Saka to left-back (Joking)? Who is going to be starting striker? It's April 16th at the Santiago Bernabéu what does Arsenal's eleven look like? What if we have a team that we expect to throw a deep block at Arsenal? One the other big bits of news that has hit during our break is the addition of Andrea Berta as Director of Football. It is an action packed episode and glad to get back into the swing of things. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit www.cannonstats.com/subscribe

Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - following the first legs of the Round of 16, where we saw a lot of favourites come out on top, but perhaps not in the way we expected! Wednesday night saw Bayern's 3-0 demolition of Leverkusen - did Xabi Alonso overthink this one? - as well as Liverpool dropping an all-timer of a smash and grab job against PSG, where Alisson Becker gave a masterclass in the Redmen net. Barcelona also showed their versatility by beating Benfica with 10 men, whilst Inter were incredibly mature (and kept ANOTHER clean sheet) in a fairly routine 2-0 win over Feyenoord at De Kuip. In Part Two we move onto Tuesday's action, starting with a topsy-turvy Madrid derby that saw three wondergoals - and Real Madrid taking a narrow 2-1 advantage over city rivals Atletico Madrid - thanks to some magical footwork from Brahim Diaz. We also chat through Arsenal's demolition of PSG where the Gunners reloaded the ammunition tank to score seven after back-to-back blanks; Aston Villa's 3-1 win over Club Brugge where they were perhaps a little fortunate the scoreline looks so pleasant; and Dortmund dropping off to allow Lille to fight back for a 1-1 draw at the Westfalenstadion. In this episode we look back at the FA Cup third round penalty shoot-out defeat to Man Utd on Sunday. We discuss the first half injury to Gabriel Jesus, the goal we conceded, the red card for Dalot, and how Arsenal had the chances to win the game but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net with Odegaard and Havertz especially culpable in that sense. We also analyse the penalty shoot-out which didn't go our way, assess the mood after two cup defeats in a week, before we talk about Mikel Arteta's post-game comments and then answer listener questions about our style of play, the need for January business if Jesus is injured long-term, how the summer signings should be viewed now that we're 6 months into the season, and lots more besides.Get extra bonus content and help support Arseblog by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblog Hosted on Acast.
