Joe & Ross; 'Don't go, Mr Sweet! Don't leave me!' We cannot wax lyrical enough about the hilarious, grotesque, outrageous and unforgettable performance by Diana Rigg. And Rachel Stirling is just hairs breath behind. This madcap, visually outrageous and unique episode of Doctor Who gets the Ross treatment and it is all the better for it.

This week we're joined by Steven from New to Who to discuss one of the great loves of our lives — Dame Diana Rigg, whose astonishing performance makes The Crimson Horror one of the best episodes of the era. Notes and links So, Diana Rigg. As we all know, her breakout role was as Mrs Peel in The Avengers from 1966 to 1968. And so this is not her first appearance on Flight Through Entirety. Before discussing The Seeds of Doom, Brendan, Nathan and Richard discussed the Avengers episode that undoubtedly inspired it: The Man Eater of Surrey Green (see Episode 43: Sexiest Exposition Trope). Since then, on Bondfinger, we've discussed several more episodes of The Avengers that she starred in, as well as the 1969 Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), which also starred the recently-cancelled George Lazenby as Bond. Richard's Pick of the Week: the “almost unwatchable” German Super 8 films starring Diana Rigg — Der goldene Schlüssel (1966), minikillers (1969) and Diadem (1969). They're all available on YouTube, but we would completely understand if you decided not to follow the links. Mark Gatiss named Mr Sweet after his friend Matthew Sweet, the author of Inventing the Victorians (2001), which attempts to demythologise the culture of the Victorian era: turns out, they were just as much fun as we are, apparently. Sweet is also known for his probing interviews of Doctor Who actors which can be found as extras on many DVD and Blu-ray releases. We occasionally mention or allude to The League of Gentlemen, a sketch comedy series set in the fictional northern town of Royston Vasey, which ran for three seasons, a movie and a return season 15 years later. It doesn't totally hold up now, for many reasons, but it's certainly a useful text when it comes to understanding Mark Gatiss's interests as a writer. Richard points out that the opening scene of the episode echoes the famous Hovis Bread commercial from 1973, directed by Ridley Scott, which the people at Hovis (credibly) claim is “Britain's most iconic and heart-warming advert”. More about the ad here. Mrs Gillyflower's revival meeting reminds Nathan of Mrs Melrose Ape, the lady preacher from Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, which we know that Mark Gatiss is aware of, because he plays a small role in Stephen Fry's film adaptation of the novel, Bright Young Things (2003). And finally, as a well-known Sherlockian, Gatiss ties this episode into the Holmes canon: in The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez, Watson briefly refers to his notes on “the repulsive story of the red leech”. Here's a compilation of some of the highlights of Something Who from 2021. It was the year that Gav was persuaded to join the existing team of Richard, Paul and Giles. We have a discussion about the merits of Richard Martin as a director on Doctor Who, Chris Chapman explains how he told the story of Elisabeth Sladen in his documentary "Our Sarah Jane", we chat about The Crimson Horror, including our various meetings with Matthew Sweet, Tim joins us for The Gunfighters, while Gav rants about its historical accuracy, Paul Hayes talks about his book "The Long Game" and we discuss some issues with Mawdryn Undead. Peruse our back catalogue for the full versions of all of these clips and, if you enjoy them, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts or similar platform. The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end.

So it’s time to go home for Andy Pandy fangirl, Sarah Jane Smith. And there’s a hand pulling the strings in this show too, giving tupperware a bad name and Professor Watson a bad day at the power plant. Handily, crystalline cosmic crook Eldrad can reform herself from her moribund mitt and then she herself suffers from a wandering hand from her leading man. For a change, we leave a quarry to land on an alien planet where ‘she’ becomes a ‘he’, the decibel level rockets and he – and the serial – fall off a cliff. But is it OK to fancy Eldrad? How many (if any) puerile ‘ring’ jokes should be allowed in one podcast episode? And do Jim and Martin think The Hand of Fear deserves a thumbs up? Or do they give it the finger? Listen and you might get an answer to some or none of the above. The lads also review the brand new audiobooks of Dalek and The Crimson Horror! Also available on Spotify.
Greetings, everyone! Don't forget to check out our sponsor at http://www.warforthetower.com and let them know we sent you! In this episode, a lot of weird shit happens and Jaime and I have a long, honest talk about plot holes and unexplained/underexplained events on this show. See you in 3 weeks with a new episode!
This episode was recorded just after we lost the incomparable Dame Diana Rigg, and as such, Leigh and Glenn decided it was only right to take a look at an episode that was written especially for her: The Crimson Horror, from 2013. We'll be back soon with our regularly scheduled look at companion showcase episodes -- Danny Pink is next! -- but first, we wanted to take an episode to remember a legend of film and television. Diana Rigg died last week at 82, so we revisit her absolute delight of a performance as Mrs. Gillyflower in "The Crimson Horror." Sure, the rest of the episode isn't all that great, but! It's Diana Rigg having a complete blast as the villain, acting alongside her daughter Rachel Stirling, who is the other great part of this episode. A worthy showcase for them both, we'd say.
This week Matt and David discuss "The Crimson Horror", and the significance of the day it was broadcast. They're booted and blue-suited! Davies and Moffat each had their own unique take on the potato-headed clone warriors in 21st century Who. Ben and David try to remember back to their return in 2008 in both Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures, and then discuss Strax, the "comedy" Sontaran of the Paternoster Gang, of whose apperances tended to run together for the lads. Opening music is from Murray Gold's score of "The Sontaran Strategem". Closing music is "Thomas, Thomas" from "The Crimson Horror", which is also by Gold.
No, we didn't think "The Crimson Horror" would be our first repeat episode either, but we're kind of happy about it! After all, it's Allison's first time discussing this 11th Doctor and Clara adventure, and she has plenty to say about Diana Rigg and Rachel Stirling's supporting turns. There's a ton in both episodes about trauma and abuse in the context of stultifying Victorian society, and we dig into some of that. "The Next Doctor" features not one but two lovely Doctor performances by people named David, while we're still trying to figure out why the 11th Doctor has totally forgotten about the concept of personal space. It's... it's not great! But there's still a lot to like in both these episodes, as we consider a pair of stories that manage to be rather more than the sum of their occasionally underwhelming parts. Next week: We go for a double feature of early 20th century Dalek silliness with "Daleks In Manhattan"/"Evolution of the Daleks" and "Victory of the Daleks"!
We open with a lengthy consideration of the rumor that Bradley Walsh could be the new companion, and what a 57-year-old man would be like as part of the TARDIS team. Also, we take a moment to recognize how seriously great the cast of Law and Order: UK was. Then it's debate time, and for the second straight week the series four entry crushes the series 7B contender, as we both admit we have no idea what's going on in "Journey To The Centre Of The TARDIS," and not in a cool, "Warriors' Gate" kind of way. At least it often looks pretty. But "Turn Left" has plenty to recommend it, including four great performances. Also, Rose is in it! (We kid Billie Piper, but she's totally right when she's said she forgot how to do Rose's voice.) Anyway, this episode is great. And join us next week for a pair of Victorian romps, as we look at "The Next Doctor" and our first (entirely accidental) repeat pick, "The Crimson Horror"!
Tish, Juliana, and Linda talk about Season 7, Episode 11 “Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS” and Episode 12 “The Crimson Horror”. "Tricky things, mammoths." In our fourth show, we take a trip back to 19th century England for three slices of Victoriana, Doctor Who style. This month we go through the looking glass with Patrick Troughton for Evil of the Daleks, see Matt Smith get tickled pink by the Crimson Horror, and scratch our heads while Sylvester McCoy is dazzled by Ghost Light. Along the way, Jim reveals who he’d choose as a companion over Victoria, Matt berates modern Doctor Who for not being bad enough, and John fondly remembers ITV’s adaptation of Moll Flanders.

In which Shana and Daniel discuss the end of Series 7, with much misogynist writing, some shoddy stories, and some overall entertaining acting. Also comparisons between the Eleventh Doctor and Gregory House. And philosophizing. Main Topic: The last four episodes of Series 7: Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS, The Crimson Horror, Nightmare in Silver, and The Name of the Doctor. We Don't Do Social Media Very Well. Looking Ahead to Series 8. Shana calls Capaldi "The Thirteenth Doctor." A quote from Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS. The Eleventh Doctor Reboots the Universe. The Doctor is overbearing and creepy. "The Doctor Lies." The Doctor isn't Han Solo. The Dickishness of the Doctor. Comparing the Doctor and Gregory House. Shana mistakes "The Name of the Doctor" with "Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS." Liking much of the set design in "Journey." Learning more about the TARDIS. Sensawunda. Everybody knows women can't drive the TARDIS. Great to have an entire supporting cast made up of people of color, but boy are they problemmatic stereotypes. Overall a fluffy and cute episode. No quote for The Crimson Horror. Shana's process for looking for quotes. Steampunk and this weird leech puppet thing. A nearly all-female cast. Praise for Diana Rigg and Rachel Stirling. There's not really a big "What If" idea at the core of most of Series 7. Shana didn't like the character design of Mister Sweet. You Fail Biology Forever. A Pilot for a Paternoster Gang series. The Doctor's Hard Cock. A Man Kisses a Lesbian. An entertaining forty-five minutes of television. A lot of time in Victorian England. Why can't Jenny and Vastra be full-time companions? Interrupted by our pets. "...squeezed into a skirt that's just a little bit too tight." Neil Gaiman's responsibility for Nightmare in Silver. Eleven is an asshole. Shana forgets which episode we're talking about. Warwick Davis. The Gaiman-ness of the episode. The cybermites are effectively gross. The borgification of the Cybermen. The haplessness of the punishment platoon. Mister Clever. The Seventh Seal is the fucking Seventh Seal. Matt Smith should have played the Master. Big Finish in twenty years. Name of the Doctor solves the Mystery Girl Arc. Shana sings about Red Herrings. #shanashutthefuckup. What if it hadn't been approached as a mystery? Daniel name-drops The Web Planet. We like River Song in this episode. The conference call and the presence of the Paternoster Gang are basically wasted time. Moffat is the writer of no consequences. Talking about John Hurt. It Should Have Been Paul McGann. Daniel likes a lot of the stuff on Trenzalore. Taking a few minutes to philosophisize about why we do this podcast. "It's for kids," is a ridiculous defense of the silliness of recent Who. Cotton Candy Who. "New Earth" and the Omelas. Trying (and failing) to rank these four episodes. Next episode: the 50th anniversary special and the most recent Christmas special. Email us at oispacemanpodcast@gmail.com Daniel's Twitter Tumblr Shana's Twitter Tumblr Also like us on Facebook!

"Whimsical yet terrifying" is an apt way to describe "The Crimson Horror," this week's commentary, but also an accurate portrayal of current Who news. What missive struck fear into the stalwart hearts of the Three Who Rule? Possibly the fact that CBC executives wanted to dub over Christopher Eccleston's Northern England accent with something more suitable to Canadian ears. Perhaps a Newfie accent would have made more sense. Or perhaps it was the notion that filming on Series 8 of Doctor Who won't begin until January? The horror continued with a discussion of David Lee Roth's storied career, what constitutes a bad fan (hint: probably everything) and more! And that's before the commentary, with special guest Deb Stanish of the Verity Podcast! Enjoy! Check out the show notes at http://www.radiofreeskaro.com

It's the series finale of Doctor Who and Your Moment of Who! If you've been listening, you know that KC and I haven't been too thrilled with the season to this point. But all of that's changed with these last three episodes! So, if you're sick of hearing us whine, you're in luck! No you get to hear us gush... But first thing's first - we respond to some feed back from regular emailer Andrew, and discuss some more opinions about the first few episodes with Clara and her story that far. Then it's on to the new stuff - Spoilers, Sweetie - we discuss "The Crimson Horror," "Nightmare in Silver," and "The Name of the Doctor." And we, of course, can't help but delve into some of the rumors and possible spoilers that have been going around regarding the 50th Anniversary Special in November. (Don't worry - a second spoiler warning is given.) And no Moment of Who would be complete without a few jabs at River Song. ;)
…in which an emotionally charged podcaster does his impression of a CTA bus route - after weeks of no episode reviews, four of them show up at once. It's a wrap up of Series 7-B from "Journey To The Center Of The TARDIS" to "The Crimson Horror" to "Nightmare in Silver" to "The Name of the Doctor". Topics include: the mechanics of time lock technology and why The Doctor really can't see Amy & Rory again, why Jenny should press charges, references to better Doctor Who episodes, references to better episodes of other programs, crimes against the art of acting, and a new numbering system. Also a preview of the "Timey Wimey" show. Plenty of F-bombs are lobbied, and some tears are shed.

Only by bravely (or foolishly) crossing my own time stream am I able to fit three episodes in this very special Doctor Who themed TV Tuesday episode of the Lackadaisical Librocubicularist Podcast. It's a two-hander this week with James McLean providing company for Christian Cawley - and you, dear listener - as we look in-depth at a few important Doctor Who topics. First and foremost, we discuss The Crimson Horror. You should really have worked that out from the title of this week's podKast (with a "K"), of course. Following this, Christian makes a revelation - that he feels there is something not quite right with Doctor Who Series 7b... We also chew over the recent rumours concerning Steven Moffat's continued presence as Doctor Who Executive Producer as well as spending a few moments on the end of shooting on the 50th anniversary episode. Perhaps most importantly, we want our listeners to tell us what they know about any cinema screenings of the 50th anniversary 3D episode. Our initial research into which cinemas and chains will be taking part have so far drawn a blank... This week's recommendations include The Mind of Evil, the special edition DVD release for June. It's MUTTER'S SPIRAL time! This week, we discuss "The Crimson Horror", the Mark Gatiss episode featuring Dame Diana Rigg, the Paternoster Gang (Vastra, Jenny & Strax), and, oh yeah, the Doctor & Clara! It was a fun episode and a fun podcast. Plus, you know there's ALWAYS trivia! Please take a listen!
This week the lads turn their attention to the Mark Gatiss story The Crimson Horror, the latest in this series of Doctor Who. What will they make of this Victorian romp in deepest, darkest Yorkshire with corpses in the canal and the return of the Paternoster Gang? One thing is for sure though, Paul is Mister Grumpy this week which makes a nice change from Phil! And in the news this week, a brief summing up of the Who's He? Podcast's trip to the BFI to see The Caves of Androzani, the UK's Doctor Who DVD roster for the remainder of the year, the return of Omega's Tat Corner and a chance for Phil to let rip on those who think fans are being short changed with their percieved lack of Doctor Who content for the 50th Anniversary.

Northern England in the Victorian era, monsters, lizards, Sontarans, lame GPS jokes and latched-on kidlet drama all made "The Crimson Horror" a roller coaster ride of emotion for the Three Who Rule. But was it a ride full of thrills and chills or merely a routine trundle through well-worn paths of dramaturgy? Were endless stats enough to send Warren into a fit of apoplectic rage? Do nerds get angry about any and all news about the 50th anniversary special? All these questions will be answered in this exciting episode of Radio Free Skaro! Except the nerdrage, that's one of life's eternal mysteries. Check out the show notes at http://www.radiofreeskaro.com
