Our guest today is Rachael Stirling: the brilliant theatrical actress and one of the stars of BBC comedy Detectorists, who is currently on stage in London in Giant, about the writer Roald Dahl. Gyles and Rachael begin by talking about a memorable conversation Gyles had with Rachael's mother, the great actress Dame Diana Rigg, when he interviewed her 25 years ago. And this interview with Rachael is no less memorable: it's a fascinating discussion of her childhood, her complex relationship with her mother, and her parents' divorce. It's a frank discussion of her first sexual experiences and her boarding school days (NB this episode is more graphic than our usual, with sexual refs and some swearing). And, finally, it's a moving discussion of Rachael's experiences as her mother's carer in the final months of her life. This is a special and very touching episode, thank you so much to Rachael. Rachael Stirling is currently playing Felicity Crosland in Giant, about the writer Roald Dahl, at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London. It's on for the rest of the summer and tickets are available here. Enjoy this. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Woman's Hour investigates the cosmetic surgery clinic taking legal action when patients post unfavourable reviews. Kate Kronenbach tells reporter Melanie Abbott she was disappointed when she had an operation to remove fat from her arms after losing 10 stone, and received a solicitor's letter when she wrote about her experience on the Trustpilot website. Action has also been taken against five others. The Free Speech Union is supporting them in their case. Clare McDonnell discusses the story with Melanie and speaks to the Union and to patient campaigner Dawn Knight. Is speed-dating making a comeback? Apathy over dating apps seems to be pushing both men and women towards the kind of speed dating that was so popular in the nineties. But is it better than online dating? And does it work? Clare is joined by writer Radhika Sanghani and relationship counsellor Suzie Hayman to discuss.Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina won a controversial fourth consecutive term in Parliamentary elections last elections last Sunday. The opposition party called it a 'sham' election, coming after mass arrests of her political opponents and refused to participate. The leader of the Opposition former PM Khaleda Zia – also female - is under house arrest. Between them the two women have dominated Bangladeshi politics since 1991. BBC News South Asian Correspondent, Samira Hussain, joins Clare McDonnell to tell us more about these leaders and the political situation in Bangladesh. Last week on Woman's Hour we heard the candid admission by the former Labour MP and Government Minister, Dame Joan Ruddock that she was ready to end her terminally ill husband's life using a pillow in a bid to end his pain. Her husband the former MP Frank Doran had been suffering from end stage bowel cancer in 2017, and she struggled to get him pain relief medication in the hours before he died. She is now calling for a free vote in the Commons to legalise assisted dying. The public debate around the subject has been revived in recent months by leading figures such as Esther Rantzen - who revealed that she is considering travelling to a Dignitas clinic in Switzerland if her cancer worsens; and the late Dame Diana Rigg, who made a recording before her death making the case for assisted dying. But others such as Baroness Ilora Finlay, a cross bench peer in the House of Lords and a palliative end of life care expert, are cautioning against a law change. She believes improved access to care and pain relief is the answer when people are dying rather than the taking of lethal drugs. She joins Clare McDonnell to reflect on the new push for a law change.Presented by Clare McDonnell Producer: Louise Corley
My guest is James Naughtie, one of the UK's most revered and recognisable journalists and broadcasters, perhaps best known for co-hosting the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 for 21 years. He's been the Chief Political Correspondent for both The Scotsman and The Guardian, as well as the Laurence Stern Fellow for the Washington Post. During his career, he has won both Journalist of the Year at the Scottish Press Awards and the Sony Radio Awards' Radio Personality Of The Year. This week we're joined by Steven from New to Who to discuss one of the great loves of our lives — Dame Diana Rigg, whose astonishing performance makes The Crimson Horror one of the best episodes of the era. Notes and links So, Diana Rigg. As we all know, her breakout role was as Mrs Peel in The Avengers from 1966 to 1968. And so this is not her first appearance on Flight Through Entirety. Before discussing The Seeds of Doom, Brendan, Nathan and Richard discussed the Avengers episode that undoubtedly inspired it: The Man Eater of Surrey Green (see Episode 43: Sexiest Exposition Trope). Since then, on Bondfinger, we've discussed several more episodes of The Avengers that she starred in, as well as the 1969 Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), which also starred the recently-cancelled George Lazenby as Bond. Richard's Pick of the Week: the “almost unwatchable” German Super 8 films starring Diana Rigg — Der goldene Schlüssel (1966), minikillers (1969) and Diadem (1969). They're all available on YouTube, but we would completely understand if you decided not to follow the links. Mark Gatiss named Mr Sweet after his friend Matthew Sweet, the author of Inventing the Victorians (2001), which attempts to demythologise the culture of the Victorian era: turns out, they were just as much fun as we are, apparently. Sweet is also known for his probing interviews of Doctor Who actors which can be found as extras on many DVD and Blu-ray releases. We occasionally mention or allude to The League of Gentlemen, a sketch comedy series set in the fictional northern town of Royston Vasey, which ran for three seasons, a movie and a return season 15 years later. It doesn't totally hold up now, for many reasons, but it's certainly a useful text when it comes to understanding Mark Gatiss's interests as a writer. Richard points out that the opening scene of the episode echoes the famous Hovis Bread commercial from 1973, directed by Ridley Scott, which the people at Hovis (credibly) claim is “Britain's most iconic and heart-warming advert”. More about the ad here. Mrs Gillyflower's revival meeting reminds Nathan of Mrs Melrose Ape, the lady preacher from Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, which we know that Mark Gatiss is aware of, because he plays a small role in Stephen Fry's film adaptation of the novel, Bright Young Things (2003). And finally, as a well-known Sherlockian, Gatiss ties this episode into the Holmes canon: in The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez, Watson briefly refers to his notes on “the repulsive story of the red leech”. The swingin' Sixties have long been Hollywood's playground. Most films romanticize the era's free spirits and even freer sexual attitudes in a time of social change and historical upheaval. While recent nostalgia trips like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hint at but ultimately gloss over the era's darker side, Edgar Wright's latest film pulls no punches in showing that some things are better left in the past. Co-written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns and starring Thomasin Mackenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy, the film also features Matt Smith, Terrence Stamp, and Dame Diana Rigg in her final film role. Now we're picking up our trusty scissors and reminiscing about Last Night in Soho. For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. In this episode we're reviewing the latest film from Edgar Wright, Last Night in Soho starring Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith and Dame Diana Rigg.
Our latest guests on this bumper run on Soundtracking are Edgar Wright and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who have formed a fine screenwriting partnership on Edgar's latest film, Last Night In Soho. We're not going to tell you what it's about, as it really is one of those movies that benefits from seeing with next-to-no prior knowledge. What we will tell you is that it stars Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Terence Stamp and the late Dame Diana Rigg in her final performance, has a fabulous 60s soundtrack, and is scored by our old friend Steven Price.
Henry interviews Alexandra Harwood, a BAFTA Cymru Award-winning composer, whose films have screened worldwide. This conversation was originally broadcast on 3SER's 97.7FM Casey Radio in September, 2021. It was produced by Rob Kelly.

Dame Diana Rigg wrote 'No Turn Unstoned', a collection of mean reviews of plays, films and musicals, published back in 1982. It's a gem of a book. Included as mean reviewers are Clive James and Dorothy Parker. Great writing with withering intent. ️

From her Emmy Award-winning role in the 1997 adaptation of Rebecca to her years-long host duty on Mystery!, Rigg brought her charm and considerable gravitas to PBS TV screens for years. Ariel and Zoya discuss two legendary women who died a week apart - Dame Diana Rigg and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, both of whom could be called feminist icons, but neither of whom fully embraced the title when advocating for pay equity or gender equality. Dame Diana tackled gender stereotypes in her roles from Emma Peel in The Avengers to Lady Olenna on Game of Thrones, while the Notorious RBG tackled those same stereotypes in court. Ariel and Zoya discuss these great women and how they have shaped understanding of gender equality in Western culture.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/omnibusride)
In this months Who's He? Podcast...... The News We say goodbye to Dame Diana Rigg and Frank Windsor, the rumour mill starts on the next lost episodes to be animated and there is another pointless Doctor Who poll. Review: Dragonfire This month Phil and Paul cast their jaded eyes over the televised and Target novel versions of Dragonfire by Ian Briggs. Firstly, the pair of them refer to a character incorrectly throughout the podcast, so does this sum up how they feel about it? Could they not be bothered? Well they actually find quite a bit to enjoy in this story but how does the book stack up against the TV version? Listen to find out!

This week, we celebrate the life of the late Dame Diana Rigg, who left us earlier this month. And we do this by watching one of the most beloved — and one of the most most disliked — episodes of The Avengers: Epic, in which Mrs Peel is kidnapped by three washed-up actors playing two washed-up actors and a washed-up director, who are awful enough to believe that it’s fun to watch Mrs Peel being repeatedly threatened with certain death. And, turns out, it is.

Au Revoir Dame Diana Just before we hit record this week, the news broke that Dame Diana Rigg, legend of TV and Film had died. After we hit record, Shaun reminded us of this and we chatted about how she came to our notice, and then stayed there. We also chat the possibility of Cinemas closing again due to tighter COVID restrictions in England, invite film buff Seb Junemann onto the show to save us in the absence of any new films in the cinema this week, and stare bewildering at Shaun as he watches all 5 Transformers films on purpose. It may be getting cooler these days but we're still hot under the collar. And, as usual, we've been watching all sorts of things. Bill Bregoli starts us off with "Unpregnant" on HBO Max which stars Haley Lu Richardson as a 17-year old Missouri teen named Veronica who discovers she has gotten pregnant and sets off on a road trip with her former best friend played by Barbie Ferreria. It's a comedy! Bill McCuddy tells us about a British detective series he's been watching on Amazon Prime called "DCI Banks." He also tells us about the '70s special "Elvis: The Way It Is" which is playing on TCM. Neil wonders aloud how late night shows will adapt to going back into the studio and we all mourn the passing of Dame Diana Rigg who impressed an entire generation of men as "Mrs. Peel" on the Avengers and went on to star on stage, in a Bond movie and even "Game of Thrones." We also discuss the new rules the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have proposed for films competing in the "Best Picture" category at the Oscars. They're a little odd, but so are we. So listen in!

In what is sure to be The Bee Gees' favourite episode of the Empire Podcast, it's Ewan again as Chris Hewitt has a chat with Ewan McGregor about returning to the small screen with Long Way Up, in which McGregor reteams with Charley Boorman for another epic motorbike odyssey. Ewan also talks about his penchant for reflective roles of late, including the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series, and dishes on the return of a fan-favourite Star Wars character. Maybe. Possibly. Then, in the virtual podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and, in the rotating fourth chair, Alex Godfrey for an episode in which they discuss the films they'd like to see directors have another crack at; talk about the week's movie news, including the first trailer for Dune (Jamesplaining ahoy!); and review The Painted Bird, The Roads Not Taken, and Les Miserables. No, not that one. This episode was recorded just before the sad death of the great Dame Diana Rigg. We'll pay tribute to her on next week's episode.

Crime author Angela Clarke gives us another writer's routine! 'Trust Me' is the third book in her 'Social Media Murders Series', and has just been released to critical and commercial acclaim, but to simply call Angela a 'crime writer' is a bit of a disservice. Angela is a Sunday Times best-selling author, playwright, columnist, screenwriter and public speaker. Her memoir 'Confessions of a Fashionista' is an Amazon Chart best-seller. She is a frequent contributor across radio and in newspapers. She hosts writing seminars, events and masterclasses and studied 'Advances in Scriptwriting' at RADA. RADA! Sir Kenneth Branagh, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Dame Diana Rigg went there! So did Steve McFadden! Her daily routine involves a writing at most available hours, having a few naps, and a truly bizarre audiobook ritual - and as she teaches writing, perhaps we'll get a few hints and tips for getting our own ideas finally down on paper. Our Distinguished Diary this week comes from Patricia Highsmith, as we get the daily plan of a psychological thriller legend with a curious obsession with snails. The background music this week comes from a quaint, candle-lit boulangerie opposite Gard du Nord, as you shovel one last croissant into your mouth before sprinting for the Eurostar home. @writerspod writersroutine@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In the public mind, Dame Diana Rigg will forever be linked with performances which were almost a sideshow in her long career. Her roles as Mrs Peel in The Avengers and as Bond girl Tracy di Vicenzo in On Her Majesty's Secret Service attracted huge attention, but it's in the theatre that she's won critical acclaim and a host of awards. Now she has an iconic role in the hit series Game of Thrones - what's the secret to a great acting performance?Picture: Diana Rigg, Credit: Tim P. Whitby/Getty Images
