In today's episode, I will address an important issue impacting workplaces worldwide: workplace depression. This topic affects everyone directly or indirectly through colleagues, friends, or family members. I will discuss how depression manifests in the workplace, the risk factors, warning signs, and strategies for managing depression at work. I will also share how our mindset about stress can significantly influence our mental health outcomes.

This is her second time on the podcast and we could talk for hours. Today we focused on the relationships we have with our bodies. Our bodies are so knowledgeable, but we don't take the time to listen to them. So often we want to take the easy way out and outsource our problems. Part two of our series on shading, this time with a return appearance from Tom Dollard of Pollard Thomas Edwards who joined us in January 2023 to talk about lazy thinking. Ostensibly, this time we met to talk about the Good Homes Alliance design guide for shading, as a follow-up to December's episode with Zoe De Grussa. On reflection we realised that the guide does a good enough job without us disecting it, so we spent more time discussing why such a guide is necessary, how the industry needs to change, and why it's struggling to do so (culture, economics, and politics…the usual).Content warning: it is a very rambling episode but in spite of its very loose sense of direction the conversation does cover a lot. The warning is just because we only really talk about shading 20 minutes in, so heads-up if you read this before you start listening. Also, it's a very UK-heavy discussion because those were the conditions in which the research was created, but they're pretty-much analogous for a great deal of Ireland, North America, and probably great swathes of Europe too. Please check the link below, download the PDF, read it, and share it - it's a brilliant piece of work.Notes from the showTom on LinkedInThe Pollard Thomas Edwards websiteShading for housing: Design guide for a changing climate, published by the Good Homes Alliance in collaboration with the BBSA**SOME SELF-PROMOTING CALLS TO ACTION**We don't actually earn anything from this, and it's quite a lot of work, so we have to promote the day jobs.Follow us on the Zero Ambitions LinkedIn pageJeff, Alex, and Dan about websites, branding, and communications - zap@eiux.agency; Everything is User ExperienceSubscribe and advertise with Passive House Plus (UK edition here too)Check Lloyd's Substack: Carbon UpfrontJoin ACANJoin the AECB Join the IGBCCheck out Her Own Space, the renovation and retrofit platform for women (but not in a patronizing way)**END OF SELF-PROMOTING CALLS TO ACTION**

In March of this year, Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB1 into law — expanding the voucher program and significantly increasing taxpayer funding for private schools. The new law eliminates the current financial eligibility restrictions and allows any student who is a resident of Florida and eligible to enroll in K-12 public schools to participate. The new universal voucher program is estimated to cost $4 billion in the first year of implementation alone, according to a cost analysis by Florida Policy Institute and the Education Law Center. We get some context on the new law, and the history of how vouchers work in Florida, with Dr. Norín Dollard, Senior Policy Analyst and KIDS COUNT Director at the Florida Policy Institute; and Damaris Allen, Executive director of Coral Gables-based Families for Strong Public Schools.
When people are frustrated, they react in aggression. The levels of aggression can vary with the amount of frustration. Ideally, we are taught how to channel our frustrations into appropriate physical and cathartic manifestations of aggression, but if you are not physically literate and lack the actual physical skills to be aggressive without hurting your body--what do you do? The pressure builds up until you explode. This is another reason to have proper physical education in K-12 schools so our youth can go out a vent a little bit in a positive way.Yesterday, I went out again to "vent" my global frustrations over the current chaos and violence and spent all afternoon chopping out and building my new trail system on my own property. Here are a few comments on my reference book source and its application. Think about it--then take some appropriate action before the frustration kills you...or you kill someone else.Reference: "Frustration and Aggression" by Dollard, Doob, Mowrer, and Sears (1939)Photo Credit: Ron Jones

Of all the education legislation passed this session, HB 1, the Universal Voucher bill, is likely to have the greatest long-term impact. In this episode of Educating from the Heart, we are joined by Norin Dollard, PhD, of the Florida Policy Institute and Rev. Dr. Russel Meyer, Executive Director of the Florida Council of Churches. Together, we discuss both the financial and the moral implications of Florida becoming the latest state to offer universal vouchers. Thank you for joining our lively conversations with teachers, support professionals, parents, and students as they share issues that matter most in our public schools. Here are your hosts, Tina Dunbar and Luke Flint. Tina, Host: Welcome back to another episode of Educating from the Heart. I'd like to open up with a quote from Mark Twain. No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session. I don't know if you've noticed it in the news, but Florida lawmakers have been busy at the state capitol because the legislative session is in full swing and public education has taken center stage. We are moving into the second half of session and look, I bet the majority of the proposals under consideration are related to education. I don't know if you've seen the press or heard people talking about that massive Ed bill that state leaders are calling transformational. So, in this episode we're talking about Education Savings Accounts or ESAs. State leaders have renamed them now calling them Empowerment Savings Accounts available to all Florida K through 12 students eligible to attend public schools. But some parents are now asking, where is the promise of education freedom for their child? Luke, Host: You know, Tina, if it walks like a voucher and talks like a voucher and quacks like a voucher, it's a voucher. I don't care what the state of Florida calls it. Here's the thing. Every child in the state of Florida deserves to have an education that challenges them to grow and learn beyond their wildest dreams. Right now, 70% of children are already eligible for vouchers, and they reject them because they know the best place to live their dream is in Florida's public schools. What this bill does is it gives an $8,000 coupon to the folk who are already sending their children to the elite private schools where tuition is $25-$30,000 a year. So, taxpayers will now be funding for Tiger Woods children, and Donald Trump's children and all the other children...
This week an overview of the growing Moving on Marion bike lane controversy, after we went back to the streets of St. Boniface to continue our investigation. Marty Gold explains: What is Moving on Marion and why should I care? The Basics: Bike paths and concrete bumpouts all along Marion and Goulet will cut Route 115 down to 2 lanes each. This will result in a loss of 99 parking spaces from Traverse (for a bike lane that isn't in the 'official' Active Transportation plan), and from Marion between the Marion Hotel & Tache. The Open House on March 16 did not mention 99 parking spaces would be sacrificed, or the effects on area enterprises. Goulet will lose the priority AM bus lane, slowing bus service with no Park and Ride planned to reduce traffic to and from downtown. There have been 3 public consultations in the last two years. Each meeting was sparsely attended and barely advertised. Only 5 of the 60 residents and business owners we have spoken to, had even heard of 'Moving on Marion', let alone the bike lane idea. At each public meeting the consultants hired by the City of Winnipeg were unable to answer questions about specifics and supplied only simple- minded generalizations of "liveability". (Reducing property taxes when the bike lane cuts across your yard? They didn't think of that.) ** YOU CAN SUPPORT TGCTS via Paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/MartyGoldMedia ** In Episode 20, Marty explains what we know about the role of St. B Councilor Matt Allard, and reviews comments from his former assistant, now School Trustee, Ryan Palmquist who claimed the previous Biz Executive Director was “one of the key champions of this vision.” He tried to dissuade the public from believing our reports or from financially supporting our independent investigation. Here's why you should- The Norwood Grove Biz was unaware they were being leveraged by the consultants against the community. The Biz is scheduling a meeting to notify their members what is going on and find out what they think- a step the City conveniently skipped. The Biz previously stated that if Marion remained a truck route, a bike lane idea was a non-starter. It seems there was a problem at the Biz and the new ED is moving fast to fix it. Kudos. Most importantly, there's no evidence the St. Boniface Hospital and/or the WRHA were consulted or notified of any plans that would hinder emergency vehicles and general access to Winnipeg's second largest hospital. Staff of the hospital, patients, and families park in this area. There are serious healthcare implications along Goulet for seniors in adjacent highrises, for health care workers attending the Access Centre, and for HandiTransit. Everyone should care that the Open House didn't mention those concerns. You'll hear what Marty was told by the affected homeowners and renters, businesses and services in the Dollard neighborhood who Matt Allard has failed to represent. They complain of being left in the dark, stonewalled, told to move, and of their councilor's silence. Our reporting makes clear, up to 90% surveyed did not know what was being planned and are opposed. What did Coun. Schreyer and Coun. Browaty say about a decade ago about unacceptable tactics by consultants? Yet it is happening AGAIN. Will your neighborhood be targetted next? The disarray in the Biz, combined with the lack of a Dollard Blvd. area resident group, opened the door for the "public consultation" process being highjacked by the radical anti-car bike lobby. City Hall cheats taxpayers to help them do it - while the media looks the other way. Part 2 - 22:38 Marty speaks of the passing of his longtime friends Kaz Bednarczyk of Kaz Graphics, and former wrestling champion Mike Phillips who competed locally as Sgt. Tom Steele and was seen on CTV nationally as JR Bundy. Part 3 - 27:51 Crime Courts and Public Safety: Bodies found in fires, teen shot outside KP Mall. With the yizkor memorial service fast approaching on the last day of Passover, April 13, The CJN Daily felt it appropriate to shine a light on the cemetery project undertaken by Montreal's Jewish Genealogical Society. For years, the group's main researchers, now led by Gary Perlman, have been lovingly cleaning, photographing and investigating nearly 80,000 people buried in Jewish cemeteries in his city and elsewhere in Quebec. A retired software developer, Perlman, who turns 67 this week, also posts this data online for posterity, so families can find out more about their ancestors. And fixes thousands of mistakes. It's a massive project that involves graves on Mount Royal dating back to the 1800s as well as the largest cemetery, the Baron de Hirsch in Snowdon—and others include more recent burials located just outside of Montreal, including in Duvernay, Dollard and Beaconsfield. What connects them all is the shared story of the history of Jews in Canada. Some tragic stories bring Perlman to tears—and he joins The CJN Daily to describe this sacred work and share his itinerary for this spring and summer. Insidious misconceptions, false myths, and the lazy thinking pervades the green building sector, we're not happy about it, and nor are the authors of 'Building for 2050 Low cost, low carbon homes'. This is a recently published BEIS research paper about how low carbon construction is held back by a false understanding of what it costs, how hard it is, and what its users actually think about living with it.Alison Crompton (AECOM) and Tom Dollard (Pollard Thomas Edwards) were very generous with their time and took us through as much of the project as we could manage. If you want more, you'll probably find everything you're looking for at www.buildingfor2050.co.uk.In fact, you definitely should take a look at their website. This is the article that Sara posted back in December about how low carbon building was being held back by misconceptions about costs.**SOME SELF-PROMOTING CALLS TO ACTION**We don't actually earn anything from this, and it's quite a lot of work, so we have to promote the day jobs.Zero Ambitions Partners email address - zap@eiux.agencySubscribe and advertise with Passive House Plus (UK edition here too)Join ACANJoin the AECB Email Alex and Dan about websites, branding, and communications (zap@eiux.agency; Everything is User Experience)**END OF SELF-PROMOTING CALLS TO ACTION**

Nashville prison inmate dies, after accidentally consuming meth balloon passed to him through a kiss with his girlfriend. The Tennessee Department of Correction says Rachal Dollard visited Joshua Brown at the Turney Center Industrial Complex in February. The two reportedly shared a kiss, and she "passed drugs to him" during the embrace. According to Brown, a balloon pellet containing half an ounce of meth was swallowed by him. Later, he overdosed and died. Deputies from the Dickson County Sheriff's Office and Tennessee Department of Correction special agents arrested Dollard over the weekend, and she was booked into the Hickman County Jail on charges of second-degree murder and introducing contraband into a penal facility. As of 2029, Brown would have served an 11-year sentence for drug-related charges. According to David Imhof, the director of the Office of Investigations and Conduct at the Tennessee Department of Correction, "This incident illustrates the real dangers of introducing contraband into prisons." Any individual who threatens the safety of our staff, the men and women in our custody, and our facilities will be prosecuted." A Pumpkin Patch, a Typewriter, and Richard Nixon: The Hiss-Chambers Espionage Case
Pic: Library of Congress In Podcast 11, Nixon and Stripling pull off another tactical masterstroke. They bring Hiss and Chambers together, to the surprise of both of them, in a hotel room in New York City. Despite the locale, it's a formal hearing of Nixon's HUAC Subcommittee and there is a transcript (not to mention half a dozen memoirs). Nixon asks Hiss, once and for all, if Chambers is the man he knew as George Crosley 10-15 years before. What happened next has been called “bizarre and even incredible” and “a bit like a Henry James story, . . . full of subtleties and ambiguities.” Hiss and Stripling were both there and, although they agreed on very little, each in his memoir used the exact same phrase to describe what happened — “something out of a dream.” Further Research: Episode 11: The descriptions of the scene in Suite 1400 of the Commodore Hotel in New York City in the principals' memoirs are Chambers at 599-615 (at 603 “I felt what any humane man must feel when, pursuing an end he is convinced is right, finds himself the instrument of another man's disaster”), Hiss at 81-99 (at 99, “I resented the Committee's callous and ruthless procedures. . . . [T]he Committee and I were now at war.”), Nixon (Six Crises at 31-37, (RN at 61-63 (at 61), “I do not think that I have ever seen one man look at another with more hatred in his eyes than did Alger Hiss when he looked at Whittaker Chambers.”), Stripling at 126-32 (at 128, when Chambers entered the hotel sitting room where Hiss was, “Hiss did not turn around, did not change his expression. I suppose I expected him to leap up, wheel around, and demand why this man — whom he had testified he did not know — had made these astounding charges against him.”). See also Weinstein at 45-49 and Alistair Cooke (at 73-84) describing (at 74) the scene as one that “began circumspectly enough and ended in a naked and desperate scramble for reputation.” Hiss brought along a friend, Mr. Charles Dollard, President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Chambers writes (Witness at 603) that Dollard “hovers at the edge of the ensuing scene like the ‘first attendant, friend to the Duke' in a Shakespeare play. Most of the time he lurked in one corner of the room . . . with a curiously fixed smile on his face, which Hiss's loftier jibes turned incandescent with amusement. . . . I am not alone in supposing that this by-play was intended to convey the sense that these two beings were native to another atmosphere, were merely condescending, a little impatiently, to the summons of the earthlings in the room.” Dollard later told Hiss's attorneys that “Alger behaved very badly.” (Weinstein at 49 (footnote).) Questions: Do you think, as I do, that when Hiss asked to speak with Chambers' dentist, he was just trying to abort the hearing, to close down the scene because he had no idea what to do — ‘get me the hell out of here,' ‘beam me up, Scottie!' Do you sympathize with Chambers, who wrote that “I felt somewhat like a broken-mouthed sheep whose jaws have been pried open and are being inspected by wary buyers at an auction”? (Chambers at 606.)
