There's an old rule in the Appalachian Mountains, if you hear your name called from the woods, don't answer. This week, we're delving into the hills to find out why. We cover folklore  from a 200-year-old Tennessee haunting that killed a man, to a 10-foot creature that emerged in West Virginia in 1952, to the thing in the trees that learns your voice. As an extension of our coverage of Ryan Coogler's masterful film Sinners, this week we present to you a special conversation with author and professor, Dr. Yvonne Chireau. Dr Chireau has spent much of her academic career studying religious history and supernatural traditions, particularly within Africana religions, African American religious tradition, and American folklore. She has written extensively about Hoodoo practices and the African American Conjuring tradition, which led to her directly providing her consultant expertise on Coogler's film.In this fascinating conversation, she sits down with Nathan and friend of the show (and fellow author and professor) Brandon Grafius to discuss the complexity of religious expression within the film Sinners, as well as illuminating the ways these ancient religious practices have often been deeply influential and just as deeply misunderstood, particularly within film and the horror genre at large. It's a riveting and enlightening dialogue that we hope will more fully enrich your appreciation for the subject, as well as for Dr. Chireau's work and Ryan Coogler's film. Sinners got a historic 16 Academy Award nominations, which was remarkable for a film with vampires. But the film is also a rich exploration of race, religion, culture and music in 1930s Mississippi. Professor Yvonne Chireau played a key role behind the scenes. She's a historian of the spiritual tradition of hoodoo. Since hoodoo and voodoo have long been reduced to horror tropes, she was brought on as a consultant. She also worked with actress Wunmi Mosaku, who earned an Academy Award nomination for playing the character Annie, a conjure practitioner in the story. I also talk with Professor Kinitra Brooks, who is writing a book on conjure women. She explains why Annie's wisdom, bravery and romance felt validating for her – partly because Kinitra's great-grandmother was a conjure woman.    This episode is sponsored by Mizzen & Main. You've heard it in blues music, seen it referenced in Southern folklore, and maybe even spotted one tucked away in an old attic or antique store. But what exactly is a mojo hand? And why do so many people believe it has the ability to change someone's luck, protect against harm, or alter the course of a person's life? We explore the origins of mojo hands, tracing them back to the spiritual blends of African, Native American, and European traditions. Traditionally made from red flannel and containing a carefully selected collection of roots, herbs, stones, coins, personal items, or written petitions, a mojo hand is believed to be more than an object — it is treated as a living spiritual tool that must be fed, respected, and kept hidden from others. Once touched or opened by someone else, the mojo's power is said to fade… or even turn against the owner. This episode takes listeners into the heart of blues culture, where musicians like Muddy Waters and Lightnin' Hopkins famously sang about keeping their "mojo working." We explore why so many blues legends depended on these magical charm bags and how the tradition shaped parts of Southern music and identity. We also share compelling stories from folklore and modern encounters, including the unnerving tale of a gambler whose luck skyrockets — until someone touches his mojo hand and his life unravels in days. You'll hear accounts from listeners who've found mojo bags tucked behind walls or under floorboards, along with chilling experiences that followed. We also uncover darker uses of mojo hands such as hot foot spells, hexing bags, and graveyard-consecrated charms meant to bind, confuse, or torment. Throughout the episode, we break down different types of mojo hands — love hands, money hands, protection hands, and more — and discuss how rootworkers historically crafted each one with intention and spiritual purpose. We also examine why mojo hands are still widely used today, how genuine rootworkers create them, and why mass-produced versions are considered both disrespectful and powerless. As we close, we reflect on the deeper meaning behind these charm bags: the belief in personal empowerment, the connection to ancestors and heritage, and the mysterious blend of psychology, intention, and spiritual energy that continues to draw people toward folk magic. If you've ever found or used a mojo hand — or have your own experiences with magical objects — we invite you to share your stories with us. This is one episode where the supernatural meets culture, music, and mystery… so keep your mojo working and stay spooky!   Welcome to the 222 Paranormal Podcast, your gateway to the captivating world of the supernatural. In this episode of VISITORS, Kelly sits down with Juergen Hess—aka Hoodoo Tall—fresh off earning his Ph.D. in Metaphysical Sciences, a milestone that formalizes years of disciplined fieldwork around Sedona and the Bradshaw Ranch. Known for blurring the lines between researcher, experiencer, and storyteller, Juergen shares wisdom shaped by a long friendship and mentorship with the late John Lear, as well as first-hand time “working with” Lear on investigations. He also opens a window into his friendship with author Lou Baldin, a singular (and sometimes polarizing) voice whose ideas are resurfacing—and that some in the UFO community, including Richard Dolan, have been highlighting as worth a closer look. What makes Hoodoo stand out isn't just the footage or the archives—it's the way he leads with empathy and kindness, modeling how to ask brave questions without dehumanizing the people behind the stories. That's why Sam and Kelly have been proud to share Hoodoo's work with their girls: as a living example of pursuing your passions with courage, integrity, and curiosity. And if the stars align, we hope to experience Hoodoo's work in person on our next trip to Sedona—right where so much of this high-strangeness begins. If you're new to Hoodoo Tall, this conversation is an ideal entry point; if you've followed him for years, you'll hear fresh context—from Lear's influence to Baldin's thought experiments—framed by a researcher who never forgets that people come first.
