When we don't know a word or what something is, it's easy to let assumptions, misunderstandings or even misinformation lead us to label it as bad and not to be liked. Well, Hoodoo and Conjure have had a bad rap for exactly those reasons. So, here's a crash course on what this ancient ancestral traditions are from a Priestess who not only practices the religion, but sheds a light on why culturally we do a lot of the things that we do everyday.

We're chatting cash following the release of Dundee United's annual accounts, with a near-£1m post-tax loss telling only half the story. Turnover of £10.5 million, record commercial revenues, healthy wage-to-turnover ratio and a £350,000 provision to HMRC over the disputed R&D Tax case are among the major talking points. Now, how do United take the next step towards bottom-line profitability? On the pitch, we chew over the upcoming trip to Ibrox. Will Rangers have renewed resolve following the sacking of Russell Martin? Or can United take advantage of remaining fragility? And the guys discuss what changes Jim Goodwin could make. Across the road, Dundee are seeking their first victory over Celtic at Dens Park since Tommy Coyne's winner in 1988. Will Sunday be that day? What must improve if the Dark Blues are to stun Brendan Rodgers' champions? There are certainly selection dilemmas for Steven Pressley – only exacerbated by a couple of injury doubts. And why a returning Cesar Garza SHOULD be a major boost for Dundee after shining against some global giants on U/20 World Cup duty. But will he get a chance? Roll out the U-Haunt truck while Chris and Simon load up stories of haunted furniture. Simon tests out haunted chairs where ghosts sit and deftly avoids cursed seats. Chris takes joy in bouncing beds from brothels and trap beds that make human sausage meat. There is the murderer trunk and the toy box with angry gnomes. Clocks foretell death (and, in rare instances, prevent premature burials). Do humans get so attached to household furnishings that they cling to them even after death? Can a piece of furniture somehow influence us in weird ways? Or do spirits possess possessions? And what about the IKEA ghost, Chris's vacuum cleaner tale, the Monet painting and Simon's bagatelle board? All will be revealed in the October episode of Boggart and Banshee!
In this episode of VISITORS, Kelly sits down with Juergen Hess—aka Hoodoo Tall—fresh off earning his Ph.D. in Metaphysical Sciences, a milestone that formalizes years of disciplined fieldwork around Sedona and the Bradshaw Ranch. Known for blurring the lines between researcher, experiencer, and storyteller, Juergen shares wisdom shaped by a long friendship and mentorship with the late John Lear, as well as first-hand time “working with” Lear on investigations. He also opens a window into his friendship with author Lou Baldin, a singular (and sometimes polarizing) voice whose ideas are resurfacing—and that some in the UFO community, including Richard Dolan, have been highlighting as worth a closer look. What makes Hoodoo stand out isn't just the footage or the archives—it's the way he leads with empathy and kindness, modeling how to ask brave questions without dehumanizing the people behind the stories. That's why Sam and Kelly have been proud to share Hoodoo's work with their girls: as a living example of pursuing your passions with courage, integrity, and curiosity. And if the stars align, we hope to experience Hoodoo's work in person on our next trip to Sedona—right where so much of this high-strangeness begins. If you're new to Hoodoo Tall, this conversation is an ideal entry point; if you've followed him for years, you'll hear fresh context—from Lear's influence to Baldin's thought experiments—framed by a researcher who never forgets that people come first. For more on Hoodoo's recent work and appearances, see his VISITORS episode and recent interviews exploring Bradshaw Ranch phenomena. From the haunted plantations of Louisiana to the spiritual resistance of Haiti, Vodou and Hoodoo have long been misunderstood—and often sensationalized. But what's the truth behind the magic?
Ryan Coogler's Sinners (2025) isn't just another horror movie — in fact, it might not even be horror at all. On this episode of The Two Please Podcast, we explore Sinners' haunting reflection of America's real history and culture while shining a light on its scarier real-life inspirations. This Sinners (2025) review and breakdown, discusses:Cultural theft — how Elvis and others “fed” off Black music without giving back.Vampires as metaphor — not just monsters, but symbols of exploitation and power.Racism and survival — the forces that drive the film's narrative.& Why Sinners isn't really horror — and why that makes it even scarier. If you've seen Sinners, you'll never look at vampires or Elvis Presley the same way again. In this powerful and heart-centered episode of the Big Seance Podcast, Patrick sits down with Jamilah Davis McKenzie—a minister, spiritual counselor, and boutique owner, whose life is steeped in legacy, music, ministry, and magic. With the grounded wisdom of your favorite “cool auntie,” Jamilah opens up about surviving a traumatic gunshot wound, living with PTSD, and her eclectic spiritual path rooted in church ministry, Hoodoo, ancestral veneration, and radical authenticity. She shares how her work—whether through oracle readings, retreats, or ministry—creates sacred spaces where people can heal, reconnect, and transform. With a no-nonsense edge and plenty of heart, Jamilah reminds us that true spiritual service often happens in the most unexpected places. Visit BigSeance.com/261 for more info. Other Listening Options Direct Download Link In this episode: Intro :00 Jamilah Davis McKenzie is a minister, spiritual coach, spiritual counselor, wedding officiant, boutique owner, motivational speaker, and event host dedicated to helping people live their most authentic and fulfilled lives. With a nurturing spirit and a no-nonsense edge, she brings the energy of your favorite “cool auntie”—a Gen X hippie with a sharp tongue, a soulful heart, and a deep commitment to truth and transformation. The daughter of a Tony-nominated opera singer and a non denominational pastor who once served as Malcolm X's bodyguard, Jamilah's life has always been steeped in legacy, purpose, and power. A gifted singer herself, she blends ancestral strength with modern-day wisdom to create spaces where people can heal, grow, and reconnect with their truest selves. :45 Just like the guests from the past three episodes, Patrick met Jamilah this past winter at Missouri Paracon! 1:58 Jamilah and Deb DeRousse's Mystical Magical Retreat by Mystical Awakenings with Big Seance previous guest and friend, Andrea Perron. 7:41 “We make sure that people come in one way and leave different.” “It's all about just building community, being there for each other, and finding a safe space.” Jamilah survived being shot in the head in a road rage incident in 1993, and she suffers from PTSD. 12:04 “I know what it feels like to be so down. I know what it feels like to feel like you're nothing but a burden on people. Have you noticed that nobody can convince you of how unworthy you are, more than yourself?” “Part of healing is getting back in touch with that inner child who used to laugh at fart jokes.” Unity Tree Interfaith Ministries 16:11 The daughter of a minister, Jamilah grew up in the church. She loved the music and community, but she had questions. She has begun to describe herself as a “Spiritual Eclectic.” 18:16 “A lot of people can go on Ancestry.com or DNA or whatever, and they can trace stuff back. As an African American, I can't do that. There's only so far I can go. And one of the ways that I feel more connected is through the practices that my people brought here. And that's where the hoodoo comes in, and that's where the indigenous stuff comes in, and that's where ancestor veneration comes in. So I take what I need to build the spiritual life that makes me a better person, so then I can be a better person to help other people.” 22:50 There are many ways to be of service. “I can't tell you how many times I have given a message to someone across the table as I'm doing a reading. I cannot tell you how many times I have ministered to someone over oracle cards. And in a traditional sense, I'd be going to hell right now. But that's where I was of most use. The person sat down for a word. They sat down to be filled at that point and I gave it to them.” 23:35 Jamilah breaks down her empathic abilities. 26:50 Ancestor Veneration and how the practice of Hoodoo was born. 28:10 “We had to use Christianity to kind of mask our faith, so we had to put it in with Christianity to be able to practice anything, or to be able to save any of our culture, or any of our heritage, or any of our religion, because we weren't supposed to be doing that.” On the topic of gatekeeping Hoodoo: “Understand who you are and who you're asking. We're telling you to make sure that you call for your sake, not because we're trying to gatekeep.” 33:16 “There are people of all walks of life, of all skin colors who practice Hoodoo and have a beautiful time doing so. Just make sure that you're really called.” “A ritual or a spell is nothing but a prayer coupled with action.” 36:11 Being Gen X: “Think about this. Everything we fantasized about, all the things we wished we could have, we have seen come to pass. So we are the magical generation.” 42:22 Jamilah and Patrick discuss AI. Jamilah is all about it! 45:02 Skyclad Handmade Boutique 49:23 Shoutout to Dale Quigley of the Seeking Vibes Podcast, who recently interviewed Jamilah. Check it out! 51:32 Jamilah's parents and grandparents have fascinating stories! Her mother is a Tony-nominated opera singer known for her roles in Porgy and Bess and Aida! 53:00 “The help they were giving me didn't really help me. I found my help in talking to other people and then finding out that my story helped them. And then I saw myself reflected in their response to me.” More on Jamilah's childhood, her struggles as a young adult, PTSD, imposter syndrome, ministry, and spiritual counseling. 53:55 Youtube channel coming soon! 58:35 “I do not do pop ups.” 1:06:10 Outro 1:09:10 Resources: Jamilah on Facebook SkycladHandmade.com Mystical Awakenings Unity Tree Interfaith Ministries The Big Seance Podcast can be found right here, on Apple Podcasts, Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn Radio, Amazon Music, Audible, iHeart Radio, and YouTube. Church of Mabus_ Maxim W_ Furek - Coal Region Hoodoo_ Paranormal Tales from Inside the Pit
American folk magic is a broad term for a variety of traditional spiritual practices that have developed in the United States. It's often called "low magic" because it was passed down through families and communities, not learned in formal schools or from books. This kind of magic is very practical and focused on everyday problems, like healing the sick, finding lost things, bringing good luck, or protecting a home from harm. These traditions are a blend of different cultures, mainly from European, African, and Native American sources. As people from these different backgrounds lived together, they shared and combined their spiritual beliefs and practices. This led to different types of American folk magic developing in various regions. For example, some well-known traditions include Hoodoo (which comes from African American communities in the South), Powwow or Hex-Work (found among the Pennsylvania Dutch), and Appalachian folk magic. Even some common superstitions today, like carrying a rabbit's foot for luck or hanging a horseshoe over a door, are a part of this history.
Tiyi lives in North Michigan where she is the Mayor of her town! She has Irish, Creole and Nordic ancestry and can trace her lineage back to Haiti in 1702. Her family's story is fascinating. Tiyi starts off by telling us about her Great-Grandmother who met a leprechaun in Cork, Ireland and shows us the resulting enchanted shillelagh that has been passed down her family. We hear also about her grandfather's Hoodoo practices and the wisdom he passed down to her. Being a sensitive soul and clearly bearing the generations of practice of sensitive and honourable spiritual contact, Tiyi recalls hearing ghosts and voices as a child. On occasion she would encounter what she describes as 'The Slinky Lady' and one of her stories details flying out-of-body experience where she felt herself as part of the landscape. Tiyi works with forest spirits and shares a life-changing experience in a woodland which took place at a very difficult time in her life. During this wondrous encounter, she received a blessing from the forest. On another occasion she perceived 'The Gate Keeper' in the forest, from which she produced the painting that is shared in the episode. We hear about the 'talking tree' that her grandchildren reported, and we end with a series of mind bogging photos that could potentially indicate a Sasquatch encounter! It was a great honour to speak with Tiyi and I'm very grateful for all she shared about her life and experiences, so rich with meaning. Here is the beautiful blessing that she provided: "Spirit of this sacred place, Grant your blessing, grant your grace, Keep me safe in night and day, Hold me ever in your sway, Spirit of Water earth and Green Grant me sight for things unseen" Contact Tiyi via her website and be sure to subscribe to her YouTube channel. https://youtube.com/@spookymstiyi?si=eer9ZYefAiicPRb6 https://spookymstiyi.com/https://youtube.com/@spookymstiyi?si=eer9ZYefAiicPRb6 https://spookymstiyi.com/ ⭐️ JOIN THE MODERN FAIRY SIGHTINGS COMMUNITY GROUP ⭐️ / membership If you're looking for exclusive bonus material, monthly zoom chats with like minded folks, access to the Discord channels and joining events with other members, join us at: / membership S U P P O R T If you'd prefer to support the Modern Fairy Sightings with a one off donation, you can ‘buy me a coffee' and I'd be very grateful

Before my solo Sinners review, I sat with actor/comedian Chris Lamberth on The Mundane Festival podcast for a fresh-out-the-theater spoiler filled review, and got to cover a few additional themes that were on my mind.
