Welcome to the dark world of horror author Tracy Cross! In this episode, Cross discusses her Conjure series trilogy, which follows a young girl developing into a powerful Hoodoo practitioner in Louisiana in the late 1800s. In the process, Cross sheds light on the practice of Hoodoo, why she was drawn to writing about this time period and setting, her research process, how Black writers are reclaiming the narrative surrounding Hoodoo and Voodoo, her experiences in an MFA program focusing on popular fiction, why writers must persist, and more.   Content warning: This episode includes a discussion of some dark topics horror writers might research as part of their work, including tanning practices for human skin. Sinners got a historic 16 Academy Award nominations, which was remarkable for a film with vampires. But the film is also a rich exploration of race, religion, culture and music in 1930s Mississippi. Professor Yvonne Chireau played a key role behind the scenes. She's a historian of the spiritual tradition of hoodoo. Since hoodoo and voodoo have long been reduced to horror tropes, she was brought on as a consultant. She also worked with actress Wunmi Mosaku, who earned an Academy Award nomination for playing the character Annie, a conjure practitioner in the story. I also talk with Professor Kinitra Brooks, who is writing a book on conjure women. As she grew up listening to sound of her own drumbeat. She borrowed her first book on Wicca when she was 13 and first tarot deck at 16. Then, at the age of 18 she was free to truly study her Spirit Lead path of Witchcraft, Psychic Development, and Energy Healing at a local shop that was located in Indianapolis, IN.In 2006, Spirit lead Amanda to move down to Birmingham, AL. Tiyi lives in North Michigan where she is the Mayor of her town! She has Irish, Creole and Nordic ancestry and can trace her lineage back to Haiti in 1702. Her family's story is fascinating. Tiyi starts off by telling us about her Great-Grandmother who met a leprechaun in Cork, Ireland and shows us the resulting enchanted shillelagh that has been passed down her family. We hear also about her grandfather's Hoodoo practices and the wisdom he passed down to her. Being a sensitive soul and clearly bearing the generations of practice of sensitive and honourable spiritual contact, Tiyi recalls hearing ghosts and voices as a child. On occasion she would encounter what she describes as 'The Slinky Lady' and one of her stories details flying out-of-body experience where she felt herself as part of the landscape. Tiyi works with forest spirits and shares a life-changing experience in a woodland which took place at a very difficult time in her life. During this wondrous encounter, she received a blessing from the forest. On another occasion she perceived 'The Gate Keeper' in the forest, from which she produced the painting that is shared in the episode. We hear about the 'talking tree' that her grandchildren reported, and we end with a series of mind bogging photos that could potentially indicate a Sasquatch encounter!
