In this episode, Marcus Pearce shares his story on health and lifestyle and how a book and epiphany forever changed the way he lived his life. Marcus Pearce is a longevity and life design strategist and host of 100 Not Out, Australia's longest-running podcast on ageing well and longevity. Marcus has spent the past decade interviewing and researching more than 200 of the world's centenarians, graceful agers, health professionals and icons of humanity. He is the author of the best-selling book Your Exceptional Life and, each year, takes small groups to the European Blue Zones of Sardinia and the Greek Island of Ikaria to immerse people in a slow but very intentional lifestyle away from the bustling, fast-paced urban life. Key Topics Longevity is in Belief: People often think that the key to a long youthful life is to eat healthy and be active. Creating a healthy belief in ageing impacts how you live. Live with a Compelling Intention: People who often aged and lived long found that they always find a compelling reason to get out of bed each day to be socially, physically, and mentally active. Welcome to Day 2531 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – The Healing Serpent – I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible. Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2531 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2531 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today is the thirty-sixth lesson in our segment, Theology Thursday. Utilizing excerpts from a book titled: I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible written by Hebrew Bible scholar and professor the late Dr. Michael S Heiser, we will invest a couple of years going through the entire Bible, exploring short Biblical lessons that you may not have received in Bible classes or Church. The Bible is a wonderful book. Its pages reveal the epic story of God's redemption of humankind and the long, bitter conflict against evil. Yet it's also a book that seems strange to us. While God's Word was written for us, it wasn't written to us. Today's lesson is: “The Healing Serpent.” Many people can recite John 3:16, but how many know what John 3:14- 15 says? Jesus' words in these two verses have generated confusion and controversy: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” John 3:15 presents no problem; it declares the gospel—that Jesus, the Son of Man in this passage, is the true object of faith for all who would have eternal life. The difficulty lies in verse 14, where Jesus compares His destiny on the cross to a serpent “lifted up” in the wilderness. In this analogy, Jesus draws on Numbers 21:4-9, one of many incidents in which the Israelites complained about their circumstances on their journey to the promised land. God punished their impatience and lack of faith by sending venomous “fiery serpents” into the camp (Num 21:6). After many fatalities, the people begged Moses to intercede with God on their behalf. God relented and instructed Moses to make a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. Anyone bitten by a serpent would be healed by gazing at the bronze serpent. Although the parallel between the serpent on the pole and Jesus on the cross is apparent, the incident raises questions. Why didn't God heal the people directly? Was the bronze serpent an idol, and thus a violation of the second commandment? Wouldn't the Israelites have recoiled at the association of healing with a serpent? Not Out of Eden We might incorrectly link the serpent on the pole (Num 21) and the serpent in the garden (Gen 3), but the only similarity between these two passages is the word “serpent” (wm, nachash). The nachash of Genesis 3 is a figure acting independently of—and in opposition to—the will of God. In Numbers 21 the biting serpents are God's instrument of judgment for sin, and the nachash on the pole is God's instrument of healing for those punished for sin. Maybe Magic In part the answer to “why a serpent?” is found in the ancient practice of sympathetic magic—the idea that a person afflicted by an object can be cured or delivered by an image of that same object. In the absence of sophisticated medical knowledge, ancient cultures sought cures for physical ailments or perceived curses by such means. We can find several examples of this ancient medical...

They discuss the grief, trauma, and frustration surrounding vision loss, and Rose shares how discovering the blind community helped her cope and build confidence. Is the pig really out of the python? (Excess savings are gone.) Who is still spending, and how? Government spending and consumer credit card usage; buy-now, pay-later (BNPL) plans being used to buy groceries and make ends meet. There are no stats to determine credit risk presented by BNPL companies. Markets sell-off, rally, and end at break-even. The correction is over...for now. No earnings growth outside the Magnificent Seven or top large-cap companies. Companies not rewarded greatly, but brutally punished. Uber, Shopify, Starbucks bellwethers of consumer spending. McDonald's, Five-Guys, inflation impact. Warren Buffett's challenge to find Apple; could he use his cash better? Inflation Report preview: Rents make up 40% of CPI; prices are still high. Have you ever felt the transformative power of music not just as a soundtrack to your life, but as a key to unlock deep, personal healing and growth? Can a song, a melody, or a rhythm truly spark a revolution within us, challenging us to confront and transcend the boundaries of racism, mindfulness, and our own potential for change?Today, Dr. Scott welcomes Grammy-nominated artist, best-selling author, and visionary speaker, Justin Michael Williams for a fascinating conversation about how we, as a community, can harness the emotional impact of music and mindfulness to not just envision, but actively create a world brimming with possibility and devoid of division.Together, they explore the intricate dance between individual change and collective evolution, shedding light on the role of community and the unifying power of music in the journey towards transformation. Justin challenges us to question the permanence of racism and introduces the concept of "othering" alongside the eight pillars of possibility, offering a fresh perspective on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts that have fallen short.Listen in as we tune into the music of transformation, community, and the endless possibilities that await when we dare to listen deeply and act boldly.Topics We Break DownHarnessing Music as a Catalyst for Healing and Growth. The Crucial Role of Community in Personal and Societal Transformation.Personal Journeys of Transformation Through Melody and Rhythm. The Deep Emotional Resonance of Music and Its Healing Power.Amplifying Change Through Collective Musical Experiences.Envisioning and Working Towards a World Free of Racism.Reimagining Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Efforts for Genuine Change.Advancing Change by Calling People Forward, Not Out.Unpacking the Practice and Benefits of Mindfulness in Transformation.Integrating Mindfulness into Everyday Life for Balance and Fulfillment.
This week Nicola and Di chat with longevity coach, author of Your Exceptional Life and podcaster, Marcus Pearce. This is such a fun and lively conversation full of incredible tips for how you can live an exceptional life. Marcus is a journalist, who has been studying longevity and blue zones for years - in fact, his podcast 100 Not Out has been going for more than a decade and has over a million downloads! Marcus is also a husband to his wonderful wife Sarah, and they have 4 kids who they're bringing up in beautiful Mullumbimby, NSW. In this conversation we hear about how Marcus transformed his health in his twenties when he met his now-wife Sarah and went from a Red Bull-guzzling, meat-eating smoker to a ginger-tea sipping teetotalling vegan, to somewhere back in the middle. Marcus has been lucky enough to interview so many centenarians in his career and he shares all the secrets of longevity and aging gracefully in this chat. You'll be happy to hear that there's so many simple things that you can do that have a remarkably positive impact on your health. Marcus also shares all about his trips to the Greek island of Ikaria, which has been identified as one of the world's blue zones, and is known as “the island where people forget to die”. Marcus takes groups of people there to experience the way of life in Ikaria and learn first-hand from the people who are living long, healthy and happy lives. It was so inspiring to talk to Marcus about all his research and ideas for how you can make the rest of your life the best of your life. We hope you feel as uplifted as we did when we had him at the back fence. Enjoy! In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with Derek Schaedig who was Harvard University's goalie and recently graduated. Derek wrote an article called “Down but Not Out.” It starts with “My name is Derek Schaedig. I am a goalie for the men's hockey team at Harvard; I am a sophomore studying Psychology; I am a writer for The Crimson; and in April 2019, I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, more commonly referred to as depression. I am not immune to mental illness, and neither are many student-athletes.” This is a real example of what some athletes go through. And Derek had tremendous support from his teammates, classmates, coaches and parents, but there were some moments in his story that could have gone differently. Derek now works at the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan where he is a program coordinator. Derek's resilience is one that you might think about sharing, if you know someone who is struggling. And stay to the end; Harvard beats Quinnipiac in a critical game where the Bobcats have a 6-on-4 advantage late in the third period (by the way Rand pulls the goalie, and it works!) and Jayden Lee scored less than a minute into the power play to tie the game at two with about six minutes remaining in the game. Derek didn't want to bring it up, but we talked about it. All episodes begin with Quinnipiac Student Matt Mungo's call on the Quinnipiac Bobcat Sports Network of the National Championship goal. Thanks to QBSN for letting us use this audio. The Tenth Second is a production of the Quinnipiac University Podcast Studio, and is hosted by Keith Woodward, the university's director of facilities. Marni welcomes Sarah Baldwin, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Trauma Coach in the Life Check Yourself studio, to inspect the system that controls all of our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Sarah was trained at the Polyvagal Institute, and has worked with different modalities including attachment and nervous system regulation. In this episode, the pair look at the driver, or rather the soldier behind our anxieties; our stress; our fear; our rage; as well as our feelings of joy, creativity, wonder, intimacy and peace. Sarah breaks down the role our nervous system plays in the wide spectrum of human emotion. It is a system that plays a pivotal role in the regulation of our sensations, our thoughts and our relationship with ourselves and the world. Takeaways from this episode: - How to change your behavior - What's the autonomic nervous system got to do with it? - Shutting down is your body's way of protecting you - Where does it all begin? - Your past informs your present behavior - Why doesn't your nervous system understand you? It's not You, it's Your Autonomic Nervous System [03:00] The foundation of everything that happens within us is a system that lives inside each one of us. It's the autonomic nervous system. Whether we feel happy, sad, anxious, stressed or excited, it can all be traced back to the nervous system. It's the system that is responsible for how we feel, the sensations in our body, our behaviors, our thoughts, and the way with which we perceive ourself and the world around us. Everything is decided upon by what's happening in that system. But how does it work? Sarah explains that everybody has a database of information that has been acquired throughout the years. This storage unit has a collection of the good, the bad, the dangerous and the inter-generational experiences in your life. And our autonomic nervous system has a threat detector, that basically sifts through the data to analyze the level of danger in any situation unfolding in the present. It is doing this constantly and consistently. Whether you're at the supermarket, at the beach, or at a friend's house, your threat detector is looking at the receptacle of past information to gauge potential threat in any given situation. It's your threat detector that decides, based on past experiences, whether you are safe, or in danger in the moment. If it decides you're safe, then that's what is termed as a state of regulation. Understanding your nervous system and how it works, is the first step in your healing journey. Your Nervous System is Stuck in the Past [ 06:22] Where does chronic anxiety come from? Or stress? These states of panic manifest when your nervous system takes a deep dive into your past experiences to assess the current situation. When your threat detector finds the current event to be unsafe, the nervous system goes into protection mode, which results in three states. It is at that moment where we experience rage, panic, racing thoughts, anxiety and so on. The reason we become dysregulated when we're actually in safety is because our system doesn't know the past is over. From past traumas, Sarah adds, our system ends up experiencing a form of chronic anxiety even though we're actually safe. That's how you end up dysregulated. This extends to your relationships with the people around you, and how you attach yourself to them. Your nervous system dictates much of your interactions in a relationship. But it's not enough to just acknowledge this information. After acknowledgment comes action. We've got this vehicle inside of us, we have to learn about the vehicle, and then we need to get in the driver's seat. When our nervous system tells us we're unsafe, we become dysregulated. Learning how to address our nervous system is the first step to learning how to self-regulate. Nervous systems read each other, so a calm nervous system calms another nervous system down. Your Nervous System is Not Out to Get you [18:27] Our body is constantly trying to protect us. This extends to our nervous system. It's not trying to cause us harm, it's not dysfunctional and it's not confused. If you find yourself dysregulated, or if you've got relationship dynamics that are problematic for you – which causes you to become dysregulated – your nervous system is basically saying ‘you're not safe right now', based on past informational data. Your nervous system is always working towards trying to avoid pain and suffering. When it has identified that a particular situation or trigger, as per its collection of past experiences, has caused you harm before, it signals danger. It's constantly working towards identifying all the possibilities of how a past trauma might occur again and as such overwhelm or hurt you. That's its job. That does not mean that you're broken, nor does it mean that your system isn't working right. It actually means the opposite. From February 5, 2021: Some countries don't just abuse their citizens within their own borders; increasingly, they target individuals after they have gone abroad. A range of nefarious acts play a role here, and together they make up a phenomenon called transnational repression.Nate Schenkkan, the director of research strategy at Freedom House, and Isabel Linzer, Freedom House's research analyst for technology and democracy, are the two authors of "Out of Sight, Not Out of Reach: Understanding Transnational Repression," a new report detailing the practice and Freedom House's research on the topic. David Priess sat down with them to discuss the variety of forms transnational repression can take; whom is targeted and why; examples from the governments of Russia, Saudi Arabia, China, Rwanda, and even Equatorial Guinea; and recommendations to buck this growing trend.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare.
