In this week's episode we kick off with a look back at the US Open Golf and an unexpected win for Wyndham Clark on a really exciting final day. Also hats off to Andy Wild, who's predictions last week all finished in the top 20 (with 3 out of 4 in the top 10). We have to talk about the first men's Cricket Test between England and Australia from Edgbaston – where England lost by just 2 wickets in a fantastic advert for the red ball game, where advantage switched constantly between the 2 sides before Australia got across the line in the final afternoon. We also look forward to the Women's Test at Nottingham, with England giving a debut to fast bowler Lauren Filer, whilst batter Danni Wyatt gets her first test start after 247 white ball caps. With so much other sport happening, the euro football qualifiers come later in the show, as we discuss England's 2 wins. Scotland also made it 2 from 2, but their game against Georgia was held up when stadium staff were required to brush the rainwater from the pitch. In a strange story for us, Daniel Connolly won the man v horse race – an event in Wales where 4-legged and 2-legged entrants compete across a 22-mile course. Connolly came in 10 minutes ahead of first horse home, DNS Ronaldo. And we finish off with not 1, but 2 Get a Grips! Tony vents his ire at Uefa's minimal punishment of Jose Mourinho and Andy looks at New Zealand's game against Qatar being called off at Half-Time due to racism. A fantastic episode that will keep you going whilst we take a one-week summer break next week! See you all on 6th July!

Episode 72 – Understanding How Adversaries Think: China and Russia in Space Episode Summary: In Episode 72, Understanding How Adversaries Think: China and Russia in Space, Daniel Rice of the Mitchell Institute is joined by MI-SPACE Senior Fellow Christopher Stone, CASI Director Dr. Brendan Mulvaney, and Air University's Dr. Daniel Connelly to explore how the Chinese and Russian worldviews influence their approaches to operating and fighting in space. This comes down to a simple precept: deterrence happens in the mind of your adversaries. Crafting a better strategy comes down to understanding what your opponent values and how they approach conflict. Without this knowledge, it is difficult to interpret and predict what your adversaries will do. These lessons are especially important for space, a domain that is becoming increasingly contested. - The views expressed by the guests in this interview are those of the authors alone and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the U.S. Air Force, the Department of Defense, or the U.S. government. Finally, after months of uncertainty, we finally have a vague idea of how things might go. The most important thing, however, is that there WILL be basketball this coming season. Daniel Connolly from The UConn Blog joins the show to talk about this year's UConn team, the addition of new transfer Tyrese Martin, the latest recruiting news and more. We also dive into the latest scheduling updates and what are expectations for the season are once all is said and done. Like what you hear? Want to offer feedback? We then get into some knee-jerk reactions and make a few way-too-early predictions. After that, we get into the topic of whether or not the season will start on time (if it happens at all), Geno's thoughts on the matter, the NCAA's recent statement and if colleges can actually contain COVID. Finally, we wrap up with some UConn in the WNBA talk, running through Crystal Dangerfield's incredible start as a rookie, Napheesa Collier picking up right where she left off last season, if Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and the Seattle Storm can be stopped and Bria Hartley's emergence. The past couple of seasons have been tough for UConn basketball. Entering this season the Huskies had endured three straight losing seasons, and no current players had ever made the NCAA Tournament. Right from the start this year's team clearly had more talent and a higher ceiling, but frustrating loss after frustrating loss demonstrated how far the group still had to go. But then, UConn turned things around. The Huskies started winning, started beating good teams, and down the stretch it suddenly felt like UConn had finally turned a corner and was capable of a real run in March. The biggest test came on Senior Night, when UConn welcomed No. 21 ranked Houston to Gampel Pavilion and picked up arguably the program's biggest win in years thanks to the heroics of senior Christian Vital, who had experienced all the lows and finally got his moment to shine. Daniel Connolly from The UConn Blog joins the show today to talk about his experience watching this game from the crowd, what the past few years have been like from a student's perspective, and what Christian Vital has meant to UConn basketball. Dustin and Sam return to talk a 1-1 week of Cougar men's basketball that featured the high of a historically dominant win over ECU and the lows of a road loss to a non-vintage Memphis team. In addition, the guys look ahead to a road show down with hated rival SMU and senior day vs basket case UConn. To get a better perspective on the enigma that is present day Husky hoops, we talked to Daniel Connolly of TheUConnBlog.com. Once again the Pawdcast was on the road this week as Dustin took in Cougar baseball's series at Cal State Fullerton and the guys talk about the weekend series games and important takeaways from those games. In addition, they take a quick look at the upcoming Shriner's College Classic and a daunting weekend of SEC Foes. Finally, Cougar track & field won their 4th men's indoor title in a row and look ahead to the NCAA Championships. The guys also talk about a close, hard-fought women's basketball loss on Senior Day to UCF and the general sunny outlook we have on that program. Also, Cougar softball opened their home slate with a mostly dominant weekend in the Hilton Invitational. AND LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, Cougar Tennis gets a shot at a conference foe and a chance to extend their absurdly hot start.
I’ll recap the men’s loss at Tulsa over the weekend and give my weekly “State of the Program” address and look ahead to the remainder of the season. The Lady Tigers have a HUGE game against #1 UCONN tomorrow at the Fieldhouse. I’ll be joined by Memphis head coach Melissa McFerrin as well as Daniel Connolly who covers UCONN women’s basketball for TheUCONNBlog.co
Martha's guests are Jade Chang, Daniel Connolly, and Marc Eliot.
“At a time when our views of immigrants, especially from Latin America, are colored by simplistic, divisive rhetoric, this is a heartfelt, but most importantly a true account—one person's story that makes us realize the universality of the immigrant experience.” —Ian Johnson, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting THE BOOK OF ISAIAS: A Child of Hispanic Immigrants Seeks His Own America DANIEL CONNOLLY The debate over immigration policy has reached a fever pitch. But what many politicians fail to acknowledge are the personal stories of immigrants and their children, the humanity behind immigration policy. Based on five-plus years of reporting, THE BOOK OF ISAIAS: A Child of Hispanic Immigrants Seeks His Own America (Published by St. Martin’s Press), by journalist Daniel Connolly, paints a “delicate, comprehensive, and empathetic portrait” of the lives of the children (one brilliant young man in particular) of unauthorized Mexican immigrants growing up in a society that hasn’t quite made room for them. In a green town in the middle of America, 18-year-old student Isaias Ramos does all the right things to pad his college resume. He aces a national calculus exam, studies the viola for fun, and appears on local television as the captain of the quiz bowl team. But Isaias faces a dilemma: apply to Harvard (as his counselors think he should) or forgo college to paint houses alongside his unauthorized immigrant parents. Connolly uses Isaias’s story to make a broader point: that the children of immigrants have great potential, that many obstacles threaten that potential, and that the nation should work to develop their potential for the good of all, especially considering the fact that one in four young people in America is the child of an immigrant. DANIEL CONNOLLY has for more than a decade reported on Mexican immigration to the U.S. South for news organizations including The Associated Press in Little Rock and The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal. An award-winning journalist, he has received support from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, the International Center for Journalists and the Fulbright program. He lives in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.
