Brandon Young and Blayne Smith are the authors of “Perseverance > Endurance: Lead with Resilience. Grow Through Adversity. Win Together,” and they bring a wealth of leadership experience shaped by their military backgrounds. Brandon, a former U.S. Army Ranger with four combat deployments in Afghanistan, and Blayne, a former Army Special Forces officer, advisory board member of GORUCK, and the first executive director of Team Red, White & Blue, co-founded Applied Leadership Partners in 2020 during the pandemic. In this episode, they share hard-earned insights on fostering perseverance, embracing uncertainty, and guiding teams through adversity. They discuss how endurance is about surviving challenges, while perseverance is about thriving and growing through adversity. They cover key leadership principles, including self-awareness, adaptability, and the importance of long-term thinking. They also explore how leaders can create sustainable work environments that encourage perseverance without leading to burnout. Listen in to learn how to differentiate between endurance and perseverance, build adaptability, and lead through uncertainty. This is a powerful conversation. Key Takeaways [05:36] Brandon explains that endurance is about pushing through a defined hardship, while perseverance is essential for navigating long-term uncertainty and transformation. He shares how COVID-19 forced their business to pivot just three days after launching, leading them to develop a framework for perseverance. [09:43] Blayne describes endurance as a trap for high-performers, explaining that leaders must recognize their limits and ask for help when needed. He uses a baseball metaphor, comparing self-awareness to feeling the warning track before hitting the wall. [12:20] Jim suggests that endurance is like management—rationing resources to sustain effort—whereas perseverance is about leadership, making tough calls in uncertainty. Brandon agrees, adding that perseverance requires embracing the unknown and making the best possible choice at each step. [18:27] Brandon explains that no plan survives first contact. Leaders must plan, but they must also recognize that external factors will always play a role. Planning is about preparation, not prediction. He stresses that adaptability is crucial, as rigid plans often fail in dynamic situations. [22:08] Blayne emphasizes the importance of creating a culture where people feel safe making decisions. Leaders must set clear intent and boundaries while allowing flexibility. He warns that if leaders punish employees for making mistakes in earnest, they kill initiative across the team. [24:03] Brandon explains that pride is the enemy of growth. Leaders must be willing to acknowledge their blind spots and learn from failure. Blayne adds that having a "white belt mentality"—constantly seeking to learn—helps leaders grow and gain credibility with their teams. [29:39] Brandon shares that the hunger for excellence exists in all workplaces. Leaders must cast a clear vision, help employees see themselves in that vision, and create an environment where they can opt in or out. He emphasizes the importance of accountability and allowing people to step up when needed. [35:41] Blayne recalls a time when he realized that leaders need to communicate proactively. He assumed his team knew where his head was at, but they didn't. This experience taught him the importance of over-communicating and being transparent with his team. [39:10] Blayne suggests that leaders must model a sustainable pace. Transparency about work-life balance gives employees permission to do the same. Brandon adds that leaders should extend the time horizon—understanding that success comes in peaks and valleys and that employees need time to recharge to perform well over time. [44:04] And remember, “Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other.” - Walter Elliot Quotable Quotes "When you're enduring, you're holding on. When you're persevering, you're moving forward." "Self-awareness is knowing when you're on the warning track before you hit the wall." "The enemy gets a vote. No plan survives first contact, and that's why adaptability is key." "Pride is the enemy of growth. Perseverance payoff is growth." "If you can't take 60 minutes to step away, you're setting yourself up for failure." "It's not about less intensity, it's not about less excellence, it's about perspective. And if you can provide that for your people and model it, then you can get people to work really hard, really long and do really hard stuff knowing that it's okay that there's not an end. Because we can do this in a sustainable way." "Plans are necessary, but adaptability determines success." Today you'll hear my interview with Jeffrey Biegel: Pianist, composer, arranger, professor and entrepreneur. We talked about what it takes to create a major project and find buy-in from EVERYWHERE. About the importance of bringing new music into the world. About sharing the legacy of those who have come before and creating your own. This conversation was a delight! Jeffrey Biegel is a respected pianist of traditional repertoire, starting life nearly deaf. He studied with Adele Marcus and has built a career of old and new music. He created the first classical livestreams in 1997 and most recently, the first 50 state project free to orchestras celebrating America with Peter Boyer's "Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue". Mr. Biegel also recorded the critical edition of "Rhapsody in Blue", and composed "Three Reflections" of JFK, RBG and MLK. He has created over two dozen commissioning projects while simultaneously playing in the grand tradition of the piano, most notably reflective of Josef Lhevinne. Check out Jeffrey's website and follow him on Instagram! Thanks for joining me on Crushing Classical! Theme music and audio editing by DreamVance. Ep #545 Of The Clay Edwards Show On 103.9 WYAB (07/03/23) We considered running a replay today and take a 4 day holiday weekend to celebrate the 4th of July, but I appreciate my listeners so much that said HELL NAW, LET'S DO IT LIVE!! I think it turned into one of my best shows of the year. I will be taking Tuesday the 4th of July off but I'll be back on live Wednesday W/ Shaun Yurtkuran. 1. I realized that black democrats don't really understand sarcasm, I do a yearly social media post threatening to call the cops on people in Jackson that are illegally shooting fireworks in the city. I ever ratcheted it up a notch and said that I would be making "citizen arrest" this year haha, well Jacksonians took that and ran with it. I read some of their ridiculous comments and tell y'all what actually happened to me in a weird twist of irony. 2. There was another MASS SHOOTING / 28 people injured and 2 killed in Baltimore over the weekend, however they media refuses to call it a "mass shooting" because the suspect or suspects were black and not white. 3. PORBHUB has made the hard decision to pull out of the state of Mississippi over it's new age verification law that went into affect on July 1st. I give my thoughts on it 4. The Supreme Court announced some major decisions Friday after we got off the air so I wanted to discuss them some this morning, one was the gay wedding website ruling and the other was Joe Biden's student loan cancellation plan being canceled. 5. Jackson, Mississippi homicides are down 27% year over year with only 52 through June 30th 2023 Vs. 72 at the same time last year in 2022. However, June was the deadliest month of the year. 6. North Carolina LT. Gov Mark Robinson gave an amazing speech last week, he's a black Republican so you know I get fired up at what these guys go through to stand up against the mainstream Democrat plantation. The finally got us some phone calls and that when all hell breaks loose. Check out my website at Www.ClayEdwardsShow.Com for all things Clay
Many say that the birth of freedom occurred on July 4, 1776, when our nation's forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence — but this statement is false. As crucial as this nominal event was for our great country, freedom long outdates it. Ultimate freedom was birthed over 2,000 years ago on a cross outside Jerusalem. Had it not been for Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection, we would live in a very different America. In this message, Pastor Ed Young teaches what the Bible says about the colors of freedom and how they apply to our lives.
In this podcast, I talk about the three-color Esper shard, white-blue-black.
In spite of billions of dollars spent on housing, services and intense policy attention, homelessness in LA remains stubbornly high. The Supreme Court struck down the use of affirmative action in college admissions. What will happen now to campuses and prospective students nationwide? Critics review the latest film releases: “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” “Every Body,” and “Prisoner's Daughter.” Red, white, and blue food displays can be striking, but don't go overboard with gimmicks. Go for simple caprese salads, blue potato salads, pies, and pavlovas.
Welcome to the sixth installment of Raynin' Threes. Our guys A-Ray & OC dive into Cam Whitmore's draft slide, Mark Armstrong's Team USA efforts, and Donte DiVincenzo possibly joining Brunson & Hart in New York. What does losing out on Caleb Williams to Georgetown mean? Tune in to find out.
In this podcast, I start talking about three-color combinations in Magic, with today's episode focused on green-white-blue.

John was inspired to apply to West Point from rural Michigan due to the examples of his father and uncle and the guidance of his mother. John was prepared for the physical and military rigors of West Point, but needed to lean upon the academic skills and expertise of those around him. John had success and enjoyed his time at West Point because of the individuals he surrounded himself with. John joined the Field Artillery branch and posted to Fort Hood with his peers. John had success and fulfillment within that community, but didn't see a future in military service beyond his initial service obligation. John transitioned from active duty to the Texas National Guard and Caterpillar. Those groups were critical to his transition; allowing structure, purpose, and community. John left the Texas National Guard and Caterpillar to get get closer to family and to build roots in a community. John found his roots in Team Red White and Blue. Where they help veterans build community through physical fitness, camaraderie, and community. This is his story. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/joe-harrison0/support

In this sermon, Pastor Ed Young teaches what the Bible says about the colors of freedom and how they apply to our lives.

This week we return to the fabled UConn 360 Studio for a talk with Victoria Kostour '22, a first-generation Ukrainian-American and the president of the Ukrainian Student Association. She tells us what it's been like to watch the war in Ukraine from here in the United States, how she and her fellow students have responded with activism and organizing, and how the UConn community has supported her. We also find a very old copy of the Daily Campus, which helps us learn about a bygone campus protest and a mysterious restaurant with a gruesome name.
In today's episode I take a look at a personal favorite: RWBR by Plaay Games. I'll go over the game mechanics and discuss a little of how the narrative plays out during a race. Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopsportcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TabletopSportCast
“My chairman of the board for team RWB, First Captain in West Point class of 1991, Doug McCormick says that bias for action is very important because you're going to learn a lot just by rolling up your sleeves and doing. And so even if you start something and it only lasts for two years or three years, or it doesn't succeed — it might very well be setting you up for success in some arena or some way that you didn't expect.” — Mike Erwin-------Episode Timestamps:*(2:05) - Pitching at West Point and Mike's overall experience*(4:25) - Balancing Team Red, White & Blue and the military *(6:40) - When an idea becomes a living-breathing entity*(8:05) - Scaling a non-profit organization*(12:30) - The guiding mentors that helped Mike along the way*(15:40) - Mike publishes his first book: Lead Yourself First: Inspiring Leadership Through Solitude*(19:10) - Mike's new book is coming out soon: Leadership is a Relationship: How to Put People First in the Digital World*(25:00) - The next phase of leadership, psychology, and humanity*(29:40) - How Mike balances everything he has going on*(32:00) - The Sitrep*(36:50) - What stresses Mike out and how he reframes his thinking*(39:40) - Giving Back LinksConnect with Mike on LinkedInFollow Mike on TwitterPre-order his upcoming book: Leadership is a Relationship: How to Put People First in the Digital WorldFollow Eddie on TwitterConnect with Old Grad Club on LinkedInwww.oldgradclub.com
