Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.TallTaleTV.com   ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- Hi there! My name is Chris Herron and I'm an audiobook narrator. In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. DRAPER WRITER CAPTURES GRAND PRIZE IN INTERNATIONAL CONTEST, HONORED AT HOLLYWOOD AWARDS EVENT Draper, Utah resident, Barbara Lund, was honored at the L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Awards Event in Hollywood as the grand winner in the Writers of the Future Contest earning her the Golden Pen Award trophy and a cash prize of $5,000 in addition to having her story, "Sixers," published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Barbara's gratitude was expressed in her short but emotional acceptance speech, "Thank you. Thank you to the judges and thank you to my family and thank you to everyone here. I did not expect this because I'm in such a great, great company of amazing writers. So thank you very much!" Ms. Lund's novel Speaker for the People won second place in the science fiction/fantasy category of the 2015 Zebulon contest sponsored by Pikes Peak Writers. (The novel has since been renamed and published as Space, Lies, Syndicate). Since then, she has won three Silver Honorable Mentions and two Honorable Mentions in the Writers of the Future Contest. She has five indie-published novels and dozens of short stories and has been traditionally published in Daily Science Fiction. Add a husband, two kids, a dog, and a martial arts obsession, and she keeps pretty busy. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing competitions in the world, is currently in its 39th year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (Quantum Night), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), David Farland (Runelords), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. Ron Hubbard created the Writers of the Future (writersofthefuture.com) in 1983 to provide a means for aspiring writers of speculative fiction to get that much-needed break. Due to the success of the Writers of the Future Contest, the companion Illustrators of the Future Contest was inaugurated five years later. The intensive mentoring process has proven very successful. The 440 past winners of the Writing Contest have published 1,150 novels and nearly 4,500 short stories. They have produced 32 New York Times bestsellers and their works have sold over 60 million copies. The 370 past winners of the Illustrating Contest have produced over 6,000 illustrations, 360 comic books, graced 624 books and albums with their art and visually contributed to 68 TV shows and 40 major movies.

Hey! It's time for another episode of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick! This time, I sit down and talk about making stuff (mostly writing), finding success as we each define it, and staying healthy and sane in the process with horror and "weird" fiction author Anna Ziegelhof! In our wide-ranging and free-wheeling discussion, we touch on the shift from writing as an escape to writing as a vocation, crafting fiction from a thematic germ, employing dream logic in magic realism and weird fiction, asking questions of characters, method writing, "plantsing," storyworlds and story wikis, anxiety vs. productive creativity... and much, much more. The conversation with Anna Ziegelhof was recorded on June 5th, 2023. The rest of this episode was recorded on October 11, 2023. About Anna Ziegelhof Anna Ziegelhof writes horror and science fiction short stories. In either genre, she likes philosophical stories with themes like identity, memory, and belonging. There's usually a spark of hope and whimsy, even in her darker stories. She also writes long-form fiction and has some science fiction novels and novellas in the works. Her short stories can be found in many different online and print publications, like The Horror Library volume 8, Luna Station, Solarpunk Magazine, The Future Fire, Daily Science Fiction, the Flametree Press anthology Footsteps in the Dark, in several horror anthologies, and on the Tales to Terrify and Flash Fiction podcasts. Anna is also an academic with a subject background in Sociology and Jewish Studies. She is a self-declared language-nerd and has been a language instructor, editor, translator, and, most recently, a linguist in the tech industry, working on Voice AI. She is currently on the editorial board of a magazine for academics who write fiction – AcademFic. She is a member of SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association) and HWA (Horror Writers Association). Originally from Germany, she has lived abroad since 2008, first in England and then since 2015 in the San Francisco Bay Area. When she isn't writing she enjoys reading, traveling, encountering strange places, being in nature, looking at art, as well as singing in a chamber choir. You can find her on Instagram as @anna with a z (all one word) and at www.annaziegelhof.com. In the episode, I refer to it as "new fiction." Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion, Elric, and Jerry Cornelius. Vantablack, the blackest black that ever did black. I touch on difficulties I had approaching the point of view for Shadow of the Outsider, the follow-up to my novel Light of the Outsider. That flash fiction probably erroneously attributed to Hemingway that's almost a Zen koan. I swear I will try not to mention the damn David Simon quote for a few episodes. Pinky swear. Anna mentions a TED talk from JJ Abrams. I cannot promise this will be the last time Always Coming Home by Ursula K. Le Guin comes up on the podcast. But in my defense, I didn't mention it first! A Game of Balances ep.629 D. A. D'Amico exists solely in the nightmares of a giant squid currently traversing the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench under the crushing depths of the Pacific Ocean. As legend has it, the cephalopod inks its bizarre musings on the flanks of passing beaked whales, later to be read by bored dolphins seeking entertainment, and who, in turn, squeak these stories to oblivious marine biologists in exchange for tasty mackerel. Any errors in translation must be laid firmly at the feet of those who actually have feet. It is from these Humboldt beginnings that the author's stories originate. The story and illustration along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art are published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Knight is the pen name for a regular dude who lives in New York (upstate, not city) surrounded by oaks and pines, deer and turkeys, a cat, son, wife, and on holidays, a daughter. He makes soap, bakes too many paleo brownies, reads, runs, and writes. His favorite authors are K. L. Going, Laini Taylor, and John Steakley. While this may seem an eclectic group, he reads more for style than content. And oh, the style! You can find his flash-length works in Every Day Fiction and Daily Science Fiction. His longer works appear in Future Finalists Publishing's Starlight series where he served as editor for volume two. In his story, “The Fall of Crodendra M” T. J. attempts to highlight the drawbacks of our evolving hyper-individualism. Technology allows us to remain home and watch weddings, graduations, and funerals on screens. This quickly went from unheard of to accepted, perhaps with normal coming soon. So as more and more of our entertainment is streamed into our living rooms (be it from space or otherwise), this story explores the meaning of actually visiting a friend or loved one instead. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 40th year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (Quantum Night), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), David Farland (Runelords), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 7 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book).

Is your world so big because it's full of secrets? From lost civilizations to prowling cryptids, from Unidentified Aerial Phenomena to covert cabals, people love a good mystery, in real life and in fiction. So how can you build these mysteries into your world? Guest Andrea Stewart joins us to explore the possibilities! As you create your world, you might know more of its truths and secrets than your characters. What are you withholding from them? How much of their own world is known to them, and how much is beyond the fields we know, off the edges of the map, or hidden in plain sight? If something strange happens, what tools do they have for explaining it to themselves? Science, technology, religion, magic -- all these things and more may play a role in the mysteries of your invented world! (Also, because Cass promised: It's spelled "Coelacanth".) [Transcript tk] Our Guest: Andrea Stewart is the daughter of immigrants, and was raised in a number of places across the United States. Her parents always emphasized science and education, so she spent her childhood immersed in Star Trek and odd-smelling library books. When her (admittedly ambitious) dreams of becoming a dragon slayer didn't pan out, she instead turned to writing fiction. Her short stories can be found in such venues as Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Daily Science Fiction, Galaxy's Edge, and others. Her debut epic fantasy novel, The Bone Shard Daughter, was a finalist for the Locus Award for Best First Novel, the British Fantasy Award for Best Novel, the Goodreads Choice Award for Fantasy and Debut Novel, and the BookNest Award for Best Traditionally Published Novel. She now lives in sunny California, and in addition to writing, can be found herding cats, looking at birds, and falling down research rabbit holes.

In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator.
