As we read the Psalms, there are essentially three -3- approaches that we ought to consider in seeking to gain the most from the text. -1- We should read the Psalm in its historical Old Testament context -i.e., the author's perspective-. The Psalms can be an intensely personal book- so, it is important that we understand the original context before we then -2- read it from a personal perspective, as God speaking to us to apply its words. But it doesn't end there. When reading the Old Testament, it is also important that we do so in light of Jesus's words in Luke 24-44-47 We can read the written words of the Old Testament keeping an eye out for shadows of Christ, his death, and resurrection. Sometimes this will be obvious, as in the case of Psalm 41-9, which Jesus quotes at the Last Supper as having been fulfilled by Judas. A good study of any psalm will utilize all three of these perspectives.

THE THESIS: A Canadian TV presenter and documentarian says there is nowhere to run any longer in this world. He speaks of the global governance we have been told by the super smart people is a rabid conspiracy theory. But, the fact is, there never was a place to run on earth. Without God, we can only delay death, not extend true life.  With the globalization of tyranny in the Great Reset, which began in marco of 2020, I feel l ike God has begun the work of making global the divide between people who want human kings and people who recognize the one, true King, Jesus.  THE SCRIPTURE:  What does it mean to be in this world but not of it? THE NEWS: [AUDIO] - The dictator of Canada decides what is and is not acceptable in what people think [AUDIO] - Howard Stern, against censorship … BUT …  Nova Scotia outlaws support on highway for 'freedom' truckers days after massive protest; Corporations that disobey the directive face fines of up to $100,000 The Canadian province of Nova Scotia made it illegal for people to gather along a highway ahead of the "Freedom Convoy" of truckers that made their way across the country in protest of vaccine mandates.  The local government issued "a directive under the Emergency Management Act prohibiting protesters from blockading Highway 104 near the Nova Scotia-New Brunswick border." The directive specifically states supporters of the Freedom Convoy and another protest, the Atlantic Hold the Line event, can't gather along Highway 104, on the Nova Scotia-New Brunswick border. The directive states that "allowing people to gather in those areas would put themselves and others at risk." Those who disobey face fines between $3,000 to $10,000, while corporations face fines between $20,000 and $100,000.  The order remains active under the province's state of emergency, which has been extended every two weeks and currently runs until Feb. 6, CBC News reported.  The Freedom Convoy left from Vancouver for Ottawa last Sunday to protest the federal government's vaccine mandates for cross-border truckers, which took effect on Jan. 15. The Canadian Trucking Alliance estimates that roughly 15% of truckers in the country are not fully vaccinated, or about 16,000 truck drivers.  [AUDIO] -  The BBC says the Russians are back! [AUDIO] - Biden used to drive an 18 wheeler THE MONOLOGUE: [AUDIO] - Fauci Worship [AUDIO] - We Are All Canadian Truckers Now; Except the elites, who are blaming the Freedom Convoy on the Russians. Because of course. Leslie Eastman: “I have been following the convoy's progress since early last week. Perhaps the best analysis comes from Neil Oliver, a Scottish television presenter, author, and presenter of several documentary series on archeology and history.” THE LISTENERS: I have been fairly quiet since the resurrection of my Lord Jesus, but I feel it is time to share my story with you. The apostles have given so many details in their Accounts of what transpired and they are true to form and fact. All I can add is my personal story. I met rabbi Yashua During the worst days of my life. I had been shunned in my village of Magdala by family and friends Because I had become oppressed by darkness. I did not know that I was possessed by demons…. not just one but many. I met Jesus as he was ministering in the Galilee, He immediately recognized my pain and knew that I needed deliverance. The apostles were there and watched as he delivered me from seven Devils. It was frightening and painful and I'm sure it was difficult for them to watch as well. All I could do was focus on the love I saw in the eyes of the man that was ministering to me. He was gentle and kind but fierce and strong as he drove seven demons away. Immediately, the darkness in my mind lifted. I was able to see and think clearly and I knew that was that I had been delivered from all that evil. I fell at his feet and worshiped him. From that day on I was one of the many that traveled with him, serving him, worshiping him, and Learning everything that he was teaching us. Every day was a new experience and a new lesson. He spoke of love, grace and forgiveness. They were such light in his presence. I could not bear to be away from him. The crowd around him continue to grow, but there were a small band of us who were close to him and to each other, the apostles especially Peter James and John, his mother Mary, sometimes the other Mary and Martha her sister, and the rest of the entourage Who sat under his teaching.  With the other women, we cooked and washed, we tried to make life easier for our rabbi, our teacher. He gave so much of himself, and was so full of love for each and every person around him, no matter who they were or where they came from or their social status. We could not Outgive him, We could not repay him for all he had done In each of our lives. We talked among ourselves, expressing the fact that we were new creatures, we were different than we had been. I, certainly ,was so transformed, my family and friends did not even recognize me.  Jesus was never afraid when the rulers and religious leaders began to turn against him. He told us things that we did not understand at the time, but we came to realize he was warning us of his death. And as you have read, the apostles spelled out very clearly how awful that night was. He went off with them to the garden to pray. I remained back with the other women, But heard the commotion when they came and arrested him. We followed behind and stayed in the dark recesses of the buildings and watched as the night progressed. I saw him beaten And Mocked and ridiculed. The Romans are so cruel. I wanted to stop them I wanted to say something, but knew that I would be taking my own life in my hands in doing so. We stayed in the darkness and cried together. We walked along side in the crowd along Via Dolorosa as he staggered to Golgotha, Crowds had gathered so we didn't have to hide at that point. But we were frightened and we were grieving. I stood with Mary and was John as we clung together at the foot of the cross and watched our beloved Jesus suffer and die. This was the worst day of my life. But he continued to show love and mercy and forgiveness as he hung there. It was unbelievable, but when he could open his eyes and look at us we saw pure love radiating out from him.  He spoke to Mary, his mother and to John who was his favorite.  He looked at me, and no words were necessary.  I felt his love. After he died it was important that we retrieved the body and start the process of embalming. It was almost sunset and it was Sabbath. Joseph offered his tomb and it was close by. The Roman guard allowed us to remove the body and we carried him to the tomb and began to start the process of burial. We had to leave by sunset, and the Romans rolled the heavy large stone in front of the door of the cave that was the tomb of my Lord. The world seem cold and dark, and we all felt lost. All we had was each other, and we were afraid, and we were alone, and all Our hopes were shattered We remained cloistered , it was difficult to eat or drink, to speak or to sing or just celebrate Sabbath. Early Sunday morning we were freed from the Sabbath restrictions and I with two other women hurried to the tomb to see if we could finish the burial dressings. From a distance I could see that the stone had been moved and I ran ahead and went into the tomb and found the wrapping cloth lying on the chiseled out bed, empty. The other women came and we were confused and we were frightened and angry that they had stolen his body. I thought the gardener was there, but he was not. I was Overcome with grief upon grief. Suddenly he spoke to me, asking why I was crying, I did not know how the stone could've been moved, I didn't know where they took him. And he spoke my name,….. it was my lord, my master.  I Fell at his feet and tried to embrace him, But he denied me that privilege saying it wasn't time. I couldn't understand what he meant. I was overcome with joy though that he stood in front of me. I immediately ran to tell Peter and John what happened, And of course they didn't believe me At first. But eventually they did, they all did and they all got to see Jesus and we all spent time together for the next 40 days. I watched from a distance as he rose into the heavens. I had heard him tell the men that he would return For us. In the meantime he wanted us to continue with what we had learned and seen While we Traveled with him. He told us that another would come to take his place and to help us.  Days later, as Luke has told you, we were all still waiting in that upper room, Praying and singing when suddenly fire fell And touched the heads of everyone there. What a magnificent sight that was! Our prayers became emboldened and we were praying in other languages and our worship became louder and crowds gathered outside. Peter went out and spoke to the crowd to tell them of Jesus and the resurrection and the life that he has promised us if we follow him. People wanted to Receive the faith that we had, And many heard the truth and Believed it. They were baptized right then and there.  this continued Every day and we brought  many into the fold. I was busy preparing food and tending to children and The elderly and Infirm. It was a time that I will always remember that was full of joy and hard work as we waited for Jesus to return. Life is much quieter now. I still care for widows and children here in Magdala, but it is a slower pace. The apostles have all gone in different directions, a few have met their death, but all of us continue to tell of Jesus, Of his life and death, of his resurrection, of his miracles and signs and wonders. We will tell the story to anyone and everyone until the day he returns.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

THE NEWS: The dictator of Canada decides what is and is not acceptable in what people think Howard Stern, against censorship … BUT …  Nova Scotia outlaws support on highway for 'freedom' truckers days after massive protest; Corporations that disobey the directive face fines of up to $100,000 The Canadian province of Nova Scotia made it illegal for people to gather along a highway ahead of the "Freedom Convoy" of truckers that made their way across the country in protest of vaccine mandates. The BBC says the Russians are back! Biden used to drive an 18 wheeler THE MONOLOGUE: Fauci Worship We Are All Canadian Truckers Now; Except the elites, who are blaming the Freedom Convoy on the Russians. Elbert Stevens owned a sawmill in Bridgewater Corners, Vermont at the turn of the last century. His people had been in the area for time out of mind and he was known as a man who, like the bedrock that makes up the state, was solid, strong, and in a word, reliable. He was also a keeper of things, never one to discard anything that might be of use later, a habit practiced by many folks of his age and caliber. You never know when you might need something later - usually after you threw it out the year before. Such people kept things, just in case. One of those possessions was a scrapbook, a place to glue the memorable tidbits of news and marginalia found in the papers and almanacs read during those long Vermont winter evenings when the wind howled outside the door like wolves. He hadn't started the scrapbook - it had merely been handed down to him from a family member long gone, but he held it as something precious for within those pages was something incredible and truly fantastic, a tale told by lamplight on the darkest nights of year, when the cold seeped in from the bottom of the door and made you wonder - how cold is too cold? The thought of it was enough to keep him reading and rereading it over the years, especially on those long, cold winter nights and it set his mind wondering. Can such things be? That relative had left Elbert a story clipped from a newspaper now long out of print and forgotten, prior to the American Civil War, in the 1830s. The paper's name was not on the clipping. Fading to yellow, the old newsprint held the story recounted by an unnamed traveler who recalled a practice he had personally witnessed in the far hills of northern Vermont. Later, author Robert Wilson would write of this clipping in the pages of Yankee Magazine, first in April of 1940 and again in March of 1963. So we are several steps away from a primary source, but the idea is one so singularly strange that it bears retelling. Elbert Stevens recalls, “I am an old man now and have seen some strange sights in the course of a roving life in foreign lands as well as in this country, but none so strange as the one I found recorded in an old diary kept by my Uncle William that came into my possession a few years ago at his decease.” Elbert claims to have been to the location of the events described in the article, about twenty miles from Vermont's capital, Montpelier. A log cabin on a mountainside still stood where the traveler claims this all took place. Elbert even claimed to have spoken with an old man about the events in the story and the old fellow claimed that his own father was one of those folk who spent the winter in a kind of frozen death, what scientists today might call ‘suspended animation.' Scientists have long known about the ability of certain animals who can hibernate - slow down their natural processes to such a degree that they persist in a kind of torpor, a state of sleep so deep, they conserve energy and most efficiently use fat and water in their body so that they can stand the long, low temperatures of northern climates. Bears, turtles, snakes, groundhogs, bats, even bumblebees all possess the ability to enter this state, known to scientists as heterothermy. As the core body temperature drops below 95 degrees, the metabolic rate decreases, the heart beats slowly, respiration slows, as well. The body temperature of these creatures lowers, as well, and fat deposits are called upon to feed the furnace of the body instead of ingesting food. Certainly old-timers who had to hunt to bring home fresh meat in the winter, would have been aware that some creatures effectively disappeared in the winter. Where did they go? But the idea that humans might be able to hibernate seems against all prior knowledge and reason. But what of hypothermia, the slow freezing deathlike state that comes before the final heartbeat of those humans who are exposed to winter's fury? The cells in the body begin to freeze at 31.1 degrees, and cell walls rupture as the water within them freezes, crystallizes and bursts through cell walls, resulting in frostbite. Freezing to death comes on like a shiver but ends with the body becoming warm and comfortable as the blood abandons extremities and concentrates around internal organs, resulting in a quiet, almost blissful sleep-state, followed by death. Some people have been able to last for hours and slowly be brought back from the brink of life with slow and deliberate coaxing of the temperature and the metabolism until the victims awaken and recover. Surgeons use something called therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest, a state where the heart stops beating and blood is no longer going to the brain or other organs as it should. By lowering the body's temperature, the damage done to the brain and other organs is lessened. They use this technique on people whose hearts have stopped, then restarted but who have not reawakened. Cooling them to very cold levels for 24 hours improves their chances of awakening and recovering. We know a lot about how the human body responds to the cold and we're learning more. If the body's core temperature can be lowered and maintained with no long-term damage to cells or organs, such techniques might one day help humans travel the vast distances involved in space travel. To conserve food and the energy to warm these future astronauts, putting them in a state of suspended animation would solve many of the problems with long-term deep space flight. But we don't know how to do such a thing, not yet. We are doing the research, but such functional practices are still the stuff of science fiction. What, then, do we make of this anonymous traveler's story told so long ago? You be the judge. Perhaps the good people of northern Vermont knew something we have yet to prove, yet to comprehend. Here are his words: “The account runs in this wise. January 7 - I went on the mountain today and witnessed what to me was a horrible sight. It seems that the dwellers there who are unable either from age or other reasons to contribute to the support of their families are disposed of in the winter months in a manner that will shock the one who reads this diary unless that person lives in the vicinity. “I will describe what I saw. Six persons, four men and two women, the man a cripple about 30 years old, the other five past the age of usefulness, lay on the earthly floor of the cabin drugged into insensibility, while members of the families were gathered about them in apparent indifference. In a short time the unconscious bodies were inspected by several old people who said, ‘They are ready.' “They were then stripped of all their clothing except a single garment. Then the bodies were carried outside and laid on logs exposed to the bitter cold mountain air, the operation having been delayed several days for suitable weather. “It was a night when the bodies were carried out and the full moon occasionally obscured by flying clouds, shone on their upturned, ghastly faces and a horrible fascination kept me by the bodies as long as I could endure the severe cold. “Soon the noses, ears, and fingers began to turn white, then the limbs and faces assumed a tallowy look. I could stand the cold no longer and went inside, where I found the friends in cheerful conversation. In about an hour I went out and looked at the bodies. They were fast freezing. “Again I went inside where the men were smoking their clay pipes but silence had fallen on them. Perhaps they were thinking of the time when their time would come to be carried out, for in the same way, one by one, they at last lay down on the floor and went to sleep. “I could not shut out the sight of their freezing bodies outside, neither could I bear to be in darkness, but I piled on wood in the cavernous fireplace and seated on a shingle block passed the dreary night, terror stricken by the horrible sights I had witnessed. “January 8 - Day came at length but did not dissipate the terror that filled me. The frozen bodies became visibly white on the snow that lay in huge drifts about them. The women gathered about the fire and soon commenced preparing breakfast. The men awoke, and conversation again commencing, affair assumed a more cheerful aspect. “After breakfast the men lit their pipes and some of them took a yoke of oxen and went off toward the forest, while others proceeded to nail together boards making a box about 10 feet long and half as high and wide. When this was completed they placed about two feet of straw on the bottom. Then they laid three frozen bodies in the straw. Then the faces and upper part of the bodies were covered with cloth; then more straw was put in the box and the other three bodies placed on top, and covered the same as the first ones, with cloth and straw. “Boards were then firmly nailed on top to protect the bodies from being injured by carnivorous animals that made their home on these mountains. By this time the men who went off with the ox team returned with a huge load of spruce and hemlock boughs which they unloaded at the foot of a steep ledge, came to the house and loaded the box containing the bodies on the sled and drew it to the foot of the ledge near the boughs. “These were soon piled on and around the box and it was left to be covered with snow which I was told would lay in drifts 20 feet deep over this rude tomb. ‘We shall want our men to plant our corn next Spring,' said a youngish-looking woman, the wife of one of the frozen men, ‘and if you want to see them resuscitated, you come here about the 10th of next May.'” Musical Interlude In America alone, over three hundred human beings have been frozen in cryogenic facilities with the hope that at some future date, these people - usually only their heads or brains, for the bodies are never frozen - all have one thing in common: they were all dead when they were put into a frozen state. Cryoprotective agents have been injected, but this biological antifreeze has toxic effects at the cellular level. At the molecular level, so much damage will have been done that only something like some kind of advanced nanotechnology will be able to affect repairs, along with an artificial intelligence capable of monitoring every single cell in a biological system. Who knows if consciousness will ever return to these brains? At the moment, it seems impossible. But the hope is that the future will offer scientific advances sufficient to bring the dead back to life. That's the hope, and hope is often all that is left when every other avenue has been exhausted. Will we ever bring the frozen dead of our modern scientific world back to life? It is doubtful, but perhaps not impossible. But what of the frozen folk in northern Vermont, buried in a box with tree boughs and straw? How does the unnamed traveler end his tale? He continues… “May 10 - I arrived here at 10 A.M. after riding about four hours over muddy, unsettled roads. The weather here is warm and pleasant, most of the snow gone except here and there there are drifts in the fence corners and hollows. But nature is not yet dressed in green. “We repaired at once to the well-remembered spot at the ledge. The snow had melted from the top of the brush, but still lay deep around the bottom of the pile. The men commenced work at once, some shoveling, and others tearing away the brush. Soon the box was visible. The cover was taken off, the layers of straw removed and the bodies, frozen and apparently lifeless, lifted out and laid on the snow. “I found the same prairies here I left last January ready to disinter the bodies of their friends. I had no expectations of finding any life there, but a feeling that I could not resist impelled me to come and see. Large troughs made out of hemlock logs were placed nearby filled with tepid water, into which the bodies were placed separately with the head slightly raised. Boiling water was then poured into the troughs from kettles hung on poles nearby until the water was as hot as I could hold my hand in. Hemlock boughs had been put in the boiling water in such quantities that they had given the water the color of wine. “After lying in the bath for about an hour, color began to return to the bodies, when all hands began rubbing and chafing them. This continued about an hour when a slight twitching of the muscles of the face and limbs, followed by audible gasps showed that life was not quenched and that vitality was returning. “Spirits were then given in small quantities and allowed to trickle down their throats. Soon they could swallow and more was given them when their eyes opened and they began to talk, and finally sat up in their bathtubs. “They were taken out and assisted to the house where after a hearty meal they seemed as well as ever and in nowise injured, but rather refreshed by their long sleep of four months.” Can such things be true? There is no real proof that this story is anything more than that - just a story. But what a story! If one suspends disbelief and considers the story as factual, one wonders - how many times have these people been put into the frozen suspended state? One year, several years? Did some fail to resuscitate? How was such a process discovered in the first place? If this was a real process, surely it is fantastical and audacious enough to be recalled by anyone who knew of its existence. But all we have is one unnamed traveler's account. Still, even if it is just a story, put yourself in a small parlor with the fire burning against the awesome cold of a northern New England deep winter night, the family huddled together before bedtime and mother or father pulling out the old scrapbook. You've heard the story before, but it never fails to make you wonder - and shiver a little more from the story than from the cold. As the story is read, you look outside the window at the vault of stars twinkling overhead and see in the distance, against a ledge, a pile of boughs covered with snow. You cannot help but wonder what lies beneath. “We fear rejection, but living in the mediocrity of being used is painful in a different way because of its emptiness. The Lord wants to free us from that so we can live in authentic joy.” Walking down a busy New York City street in a flowing blue and white habit and veil would force you to really think about your, your motivations, and what you stand for, eh? I got to sit down in person with Sr. Bethany Madonna for coffee at the National Catholic Youth Conferences where we were both blessed to be speakers. For those of us who aren't nuns, Sr. Bethany cuts to the heart of what's important and how to live an authentic life surrendered to God. “In the end, it all comes down to one question: How well did I love in God’s name? And that’s where surrender comes in: in those little, teeny tiny, quiet yeses.” Life is unpredictable and we often don’t choose the crosses that we carry. Sometimes the things we so desperately want to be fixed, aren’t. Surrender is the most important part of discernment, but how do we surrender when we are scared of being hurt? Mary Lenaburg, author of Be Brave in the Scared, is here to offer empowering insight and hope. I get vulnerable about my struggles, we both cry (possibly several times!) and discuss how to begin trusting God in small ways that lead to big ways. We talk about what is waiting on the other side of suffering: peace, hope, strength, and then using your story to in turn assist others who struggle. Mary is inspirational and I know you’re going to love her! BONUS: O God Beyond All Praising is my all-time fave hymn (it was the recessional hymn at my wedding!) and when I found out that Mary has a special connection to it as well I knew I wanted to include it in this episode. If you’re a parent, do you feel like your parenting style is best described as: “kind of a mess”? *raises hand* If you’re a regular listener, you know that my mission on this podcast is to increase awareness of discernment not JUST as a one-time answer about vocation, but as a lifelong muscle (or skill) that we build up and work out over time. Are you curious about the inner workings of religious life but don’t feel ready to visit orders yet? What do the different parts of the habit signify, anyway? Too often we say, “religious life just isn’t for me.” But do we assume that too soon without truly exploring the question? Fr. Aquinas Beale thought he needed to make it through college and find a job before he could really put his future at God’s feet. He’s a gymnast, musician, super brainy millennial, and was ambitious to make his way in the world. He thought that religious life just couldn’t be a full, happy life for him. In the midst of all his busy-ness, God was calling him to be a monk and priest with the Dominican Order. He has had challenges but has been constantly surprised by how giving his life to God has fulfilled not only his dreams, but also dreams he never knew he had. Often those come at the hands of the people closest to her: family members. In Chast’s recent book, a graphic memoir called Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? that has rightfully earned a place on many annual lists of the year’s best new non-fiction, she tells the story of her parents. In particular, she looks back at how, as an only child, she dealt with their steep decline at the end of their lives—with love and sadness, but also with frustration and guilt. Summary of today's show: Our usual Thursday panel of Scot Landry, Susan Abbott, Fr. Roger Landry, and Gregory Tracy looked at the news headlines of the week, including Cardinal Timothy Dolan being asked to give the benediction at the Republican National Convention; Presidential candidate Mitt Romney agreeing to an interview with EWTN's The World Over program; the Archdiocese of Atlanta receiving Gone with the Wind as a bequest; the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm showing the alternative to assisted suicide; and Fr. Roger writing on the call to martyrdom as a witness to our culture. Listen to the show: Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Susan Abbott Today's guest(s): Gregory Tracy, managing editor of the Pilot, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Boston, and Fr. Roger Landry, pastor of St. Bernadette Parish in Fall River Links from today's show: Some of the stories discussed on this show will be available on The Pilot's and The Anchor's websites on Friday morning. Please check those sites for the latest links. Today's topics: Cardinal Dolan at the GOP convention; Mitt Romney on EWTN; Gone with the Wind in Atlanta; Carmelite serving the infirm 1st segment: Scot Landry welcomed the four Thursday regulars back to the show after a long time apart. Scot said that soon we will start making a live video stream of the show available for many shows. Susan said she is preparing for the new catechetical school year. She said August feels like the shortest month of the year sometimes because they're so busy getting ready. Scot welcomed Gregory Tracy and Fr. Roger Landry back to the show. At the top of the news was the invitation by Mitt Romney to Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York to give the benediction at the Republican National Convention. Scot wondered if people will criticize the cardinal as being partisan. Susan said the move by the Republicans is brilliant. Cardinal Dolan is very articulate and will use the time to call down blessings on our country without being partisan. Susan then told the story of being at dinner with Cardinal Dolan during Bishop Richard Malone's installation celebrations in Buffalo, New York. Scot asked Greg why would a Catholic prelate say yes to such an invitation. Greg recalled the discussion about the invitation to the President Barack Obama to participate in New York's Al Smith dinner to benefit Catholic Charities. He said it's interesting that the Cardinal is blasted for inviting Obama and he'll be criticized for praying at the convention. Scot asked Fr. Roger about the involvement of the Catholic Church in the political sphere. Fr. Roger said the first thing to recognize is that Cardinal Dolan said he would be willing to speak at both conventions and that the principle is that we should start something so important with prayer to call upon God's authority and wisdom as we undertake such actions. He added that there are some people who think that the Catholic Church's business is to be in church on Sunday, not to be salt and light for the world. We're trying to lift everything up for the common good. It is a great sign that we begin so much of our public life with prayer because we can't evict God from our society. Cardinal Dolan has been trying to chart the path by which the faith will purify all political reason. This is the same goal of Pope Benedict XVI, who said during his visit to the United Kingdom that the political sphere has nothing to fear from the Church. The Church is trying to articulate the moral principles which aren't just for Christians, but apply to the dignity of every human person as part of natural law. Scot noted that Mitt Romney will be appearing on EWTN tonight in a significant interview. He said it's clearly an attempt to reach out to Catholics from the Romney campaign. Susan said the whole issue of the candidate's religion has come up before, but the issue of Mormonism is new today and should make for an interesting conversation. Scot said these are the sorts of interviews that frame lots of issues going forward. Greg said this looks like evidence that the Romney campaign is reaching for the Catholic vote. Greg said he's not sure that there is a Catholic vote, as if all Catholics vote the same. Traditionally Catholics did vote Democrat, but there seems to be a split between generations where older Catholics still tend to Democrats while younger Catholics often tend to be Republican for pro-life reasons. He thinks President Obama should take the opportunity to make his case to the Catholic voters like Romney is. Fr. Roger said he hopes Arroyo asks Romney about his conversions with regard tho the life issue. Early in Romney's life was pro-life, then was later pro-abortion running for governor, and then came back to a pro-life position. Catholics need to be able to get beyond the typical frame on Romney as a flip-flopper who switches for political expediency. Fr. Roger said he's heard that Romney's switch came when Fr. Tad Pacholczyk explained to him about what's going on in embryonic stem cell research. He'd also love to see what he likes about Paul Ryan in terms of Ryan's understanding of the Catholic faith as well as what Ryan has written with regard to Catholic teaching and public policy. Fr. Roger thinks Ryan's writings on the subject are the best attempt to apply the principles by any public elected official. Fr. Roger also always wants to see if candidates are men of personal faith and personal principle. Scot said he'd ask Romney how things would be different in a Romney administration with regard to religious liberty and how the HHS mandate might be reversed. Susan would ask him about his faith and why it's important to him and about his Mormon missionary commitment. Greg said he would ask him to speak a little about how Catholics can somehow relate to him in his Mormon faith. At the Pilot they've seen a lot of reluctance to support Romney because they're afraid of his Mormonism in the feedback they've received in letters to the editor and elsewhere. Scot said there is a deep connection between “Gone with the Wind” and the Archdiocese of Atlanta, because one of Margaret Mitchell's heirs has willed it to the archdiocese. From the Joseph Mitchell estate, Archbishop Gregory has designated that $7.5 million be given to the Cathedral of Christ the King for its building fund. He also has assigned $1.5 million to Catholic Charities Atlanta for its immediate use and an additional $2 million to create an endowment fund for the social services agency to address its long-term need for sustaining income. The archbishop also has asked the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia to create an endowment fund for each parish, mission and Catholic school of the archdiocese with a $10,000 gift apiece from the Joseph Mitchell estate, totaling more than $1 million. He also has assigned $150,000 to the Deacons' Assistance Fund, $100,000 of which will be a challenge grant that is in place until May 31,2013, to match any charitable contributions made to the fund during that time. The remainder of the Mitchell bequest will be held in reserve and used by the archdiocese for general religious purposes as requested in Joseph Mitchell's will, Deacon Swope said. Plans call for the cathedral parish, which has limited space on its Peachtree Road site, to use part of the bequest to purchase the nearby archbishop's residence on West Wesley and renovate it as a rectory. A new residence is planned for Archbishop Gregory and future archbishops of Atlanta on the property given to the archdiocese by Joseph Mitchell. Scot said he loves to highlight the living legacy that generous people leave to the Church. Susan said she didn't realize many of the details about Gone with the Wind in the story, like the language translations and how the estate had many artifacts from other authors, which they hope to put on public display. Scot said when an estate gives half or more to the Church, it shows the Catholic faith was central to the donor's life. Greg said it also provides a massive cultural icon. He also finds it shows how much the South is changing and growing and becoming so much more Catholic. He also noted that it's an ongoing gift that will benefit the archdiocese with future profits. Scot said he was surprised the Church didn't sell the rights and various art, rather than seek to maintain it. Fr. Roger has been writing recently on the importance of art and beauty to the soul. Fr. Roger said the Church has been preserving cultural treasures from the beginning because they are created through the genius of human beings that God has implanted in them. The second consideration is that if the Church tried to sell it, it would have been impossible for the other half-owner to buy it and could have damaged the cultural legacy they'd been endowed with. Fr. Roger's first thought was about the scandal years ago when Bob Dylan performed before Pope John Paul II and John Paul preached extemperaneously on what it means to be “blowing with the wind” and in similar way the Mitchell family has blown with the Wind of the Holy Spirit. 2nd segment: Scot called attention to a lengthy article in the Pilot this week about the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm in Massachusetts who run two homes for the elderly and infirm in Framingham and South Boston. They show that there's a better way than assisted suicide, which is to love. Susan said the dignity of the human person has been their stock in trade since the beginning. They address the fear people have about end of life issues and they have assembled a good staff to meet the needs and fears of the dying. They say that people don't come to them to die but to live, which is such an opposite attitude from the assisted suicide proponents. Scot said the founder of the Carmelite Sisters used to be one of the Little Sisters of the Poor, who focus mainly on the poorest at the end of life, but she wanted to offer the same care to everyone regardless of wealth or class. Scot noted how one of the sisters said with regard to assisted suicide that it not only could disrupt otherwise dignified lives, but also the peace of families that help someone end their own life. There will never be peace in that family again, she said. It will make everyone wonder what will happen to them if they get ill. The mission of the facility is to care our elders and to talk with them in this final stage of life so they don't feel alone. Scot and Fr. Roger said that this is how our whole society should treat every sick person, and it shouldn't be unique to the Carmelite Sisters. Fr. Roger said our culture is starting to look at people as disposable, as an economic burden. Instead we are a brother or sister and we are looked at with love. Mother Mark of the Sisters said “Somebody has to advocate for the elderly.” That should be all of us. Scot said people who contemplate suicide need help, no matter whether they are terminally ill. Susan said many years ago the Church started a program called “In Support of Life” and a priest told a gathering a story about interviews of families of elderly and terminally ill patients who said overwhelmingly that they should have the right to take their own life, but the elderly and terminally ill themselves said overwhelmingly that they shouldn't have that right. Scot said people can go to the Suicide is Always a Tragedy website and click through to stopassistedsuicide.org to donate, to get educated, and to learn how to talk to others about voting No on Question 2. Scot said in other news, EWTN host Johnette Benkovic will be speaking this weekend at the St. Francis Xavier Parish in Acushnet, Mass. Call 508–995–7600. Fr. Roger has also restarted his Putting Into the Deep column in The Anchor newspaper. He has most recently written about the installation Mass homily by Bishop Richard Malone upon his arrival in Buffalo. He said the bishop preached about martyrdom, partly because he recognized that carrying out the New Evangelization today in a culture hostile to our faith, we need to have the grit of the martyrs to do what Christ has asked us to do. He said what our culture needs most today is the courage of the martyrs. The word martyr means witness in Greek and we are called to witness with our words and lives. Fr. Roger said we can't proclaim the Gospel if we have a watered-down cowardly vision of the faith. Too often people are afraid to engage their faith in politics or public affairs. The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church. Scot said Fr. Charles Sheehy died at 94 years old on August 10, which was the 68th anniversary of his ordination. He served in 10 different towns in his time as a priest. Meanwhile, Fr. John Farrell, who just received Senior Priest status, served in only two different parishes, as well as teaching in the seminary. They also discussed how Fr. Farrell told his mother at his First Communion that he felt called to the priesthood.
