Interview by Kris PetersWith their new album A Sonication, Germany-based metal band OBSCURA launch the second of their trilogy concept. The group's second (seventh overall) album for Nuclear Blast pivots on many fronts. Advanced, elegant yet refreshing, A Sonication sums up past endeavors effortlessly as it gazes with purpose and conviction into the future. OBSCURA are fan-renowned and critically acclaimed for challenging and then expanding upon norms. From Retribution (2004) through A Valediction (2021), the band flourished and made significant progress in a musical genre unprepared for a creative shot of German invention. A Sonication spearheads OBSCURA into a new era of extreme metal.Guitarist/vocalist Steffen Kummerer founded Obscura in 2002. Early on, he set out to improve, redefine, and push forward. Under his self-label creation, the Bavarian released debut album Retribution (2004), followed by heavy touring throughout Europe. Word quickly spread that a brand-new band from the south of Germany was on the rise. Buzz lead to a deal with U.S.-based Relapse Records. The first record out was Cosmogenesis. In Europe, Metal Hammer Germany awarded the album 6/7 while in the U.S. Cosmogenesis hit the Billboard charts at #71. The cross-continental praise and fevered momentum landed OBSCURA on high-profile tours in Europe, North America, and Japan. When follow-up Omnivium arrived in 2011, they upped their chart success, received more accolades from publications like Terrorizer, Rock Hard, and Decibel and had another massive round-world tour cycle, while enhancing and making progress on their clever brutality. OBSCURA further developed their sound on Akróasis (2016). Moored by jaw-dropping tracks like Sermon of the Seven Suns, Ode to the Sun, and the title track, Akróasis elevated OBSCURA to the highest levels of international renown.OBSCURA's most significant accomplishment was, however, just around the corner. The final part of a tetralogy, Diluvium (2018), fiercely pursued OBSCURA's multi-album transformation into musical innovators and metal powerhouses. Music videos for the title track, Emergent Evolution and Mortification of the Vulgar Sun, in concert with a substantial interest in virtuosic, forward-thinking metal, posited OBSCURA in the good graces (yet again) of the worldwide press in addition to rocketing up, for the very first time, the official album charts in Germany. The Germans also topped out at #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart with Diluvium.A turning point in the career of the Germans manifested with the first release for the biggest independent metal label on the planet, Nuclear Blast Records. A Valediction granted the band worldwide success, topping their previous albums in a heartbeat, and saw the band climbing higher chart positions worldwide. With epic opening track Forsaken, technical-through the roof Solaris and the catchy, melodic and yet accessible title track, A Valediction established the group as an outstanding and energetic live act, to be proved by their first tour to cover South- and Central America, aside from touring relentlessly throughout Europe, North America and Asia. With the February 7 release date of A Sonication looming, HEAVY sat down with Steffen Kummerer to find out more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Their three critically-acclaimed releases have been punctuated with international tours, where their live show has gained a reputation for what Absolute Underground Magazine described as “[sounding] like there are at least five people onstage”. Founded in 2009 by Trez (vocals, guitar) and Stef (drums), Mares released their debut The Moulting in 2010, where it topped campus radio charts and was hailed by PopMatters as “superb”; they signed to Canada's Sonic Unyon Records shortly thereafter. 2012's The Pilgrimage was produced by Sanford Parker (Voivod, Yob) and praised by Pitchfork, Decibel, and Terrorizer, as well as a nod from Canada's prestigious Polaris Prize. After several North American tours, a long hiatus followed; they re-emerged in 2022 with Trez remaining at the helm, and long-standing Mares friend and collaborator Casey on drums, bass, and electronics. 2022's The Exile was deemed by many reviewers as their finest work to date; Decibel praised its “nuance, vulnerability, and maturity”, and AngryMetalGuy called it “the sound of a band in its prime, not one just slinking back in from the cold”. A tour with noise/doom heavyweights KEN mode and Vile Creature followed. https://maresofthrace.bandcamp.com/music https://www.facebook.com/maresofthraceca/ https://www.instagram.com/mares_of_thrace/ Slať Sludge band from Brno, Czech Republic Kremace - vocals Koffin - guitar Dáda - bass Denny - drums https://slat.bandcamp.com/album/demo https://www.instagram.com/slat666sludge/ https://www.facebook.com/slat666 TarLung A stoned, doomed sludge metal band from Vienna, Austria. https://tarlung.bandcamp.com/music http://www.tarlung.com https://www.facebook.com/tarlungband/ https://www.instagram.com/tarlung_band Intro music: The Funk - Qubesounds _ Send your opinions, comments and suggestions to podcast@interceptorbeyond.com

Klassieker! 2. Carcass - The Devil Rides Out (Torn Arteries, 2021) The Devil Rides Out, mooi recent werk van hen, wat rustiger eindigen, want anders toch Symphonies of Sickness gekozen, blijft super plaat
Today we're doing another NWOBHM banger that influenced the shape of metal: Lightning to the Nations by Diamond Head. This wasn't on the original Terrorizer list, but I needed 2 more albums to make it an even 100, so I picked this one after seeing Metallica cover one of the songs live. Check it out!

Welcome to the second season of Death Metal Discharge! I decided to count down Terrorizer's top 100 most important albums of the 80's for this season. I chose to do the 80's list for two reasons, 1) the eighties are a foundational period in extreme music and 2) the list has so much cool shit on it. I couldn't turn down the chance to review some of these records. So strap in! This is gonna be a long exercise but I'm hoping it's worthwhile. Let's trace the evolution of extreme music through its first and arguably most important decade.
Number one on the list is finally here! It should come as no surprise to anyone following along that Terrorizer's best death metal album of all time is Altars of Madness by Morbid Angel. This record is on another level of intensity. It came out early enough in the game to set the stage for everything that came after it, and somehow, nothing has captured this record's intense hunger since it dropped.
Number seven on the Terrorizer list is Slowly We Rot by Obituary. Another early record in the death metal cannon that charts its own course and influences a lot of what comes after it. Maybe not the superior Obituary album art, but musically, I think it has the edge.
Number eight on the Terrorizer list is Blessed Are the Sick, Morbid Angel's slower, simpler follow-up to their masterpiece Altars of Madness. This album ratchets up the heaviness and also, to me. signals a quiet end to death metal's classic era.

Alex Stein the King of the Conspiracy Castle aka the Town Hall Terrorizer joins us today to discuss the war on drugs, his viral Plano Texas video and also his appearances on Infowars and Tucker Carlson. We wrap up talking about the various hit pieces that people are trying to write about Alex. Which, if you'll indulge my editorializing, is absolutely ridiculous. Fans of our show know we have zero issue calling people out when they're wrong. Alex is not someone who deserves to be called out. They're mad he danced and rapped at a meeting. What is this footloose? Alex is a genuinely good guy. Whoever is trying to smear him is a dishonest journalist and isn't fit for their job. The boys talk tryptophan, tryophobia, and trips on LSD (again) in this THANKSGIVING edition of the BLAST.
In a bumper episode, Hell Bent For Metal talks to Andrew O'Neill – comedian, Edinburgh Festival fixture, former Terrorizer columnist, and the creator of the show The History Of Heavy Metal – about their experience of expressing their gender identity in the metal world, and about being an outsider in most rooms they're in. (And Altar Of Plagues. Standard HBFM.)In this week's Camp Classic, the relevance to the queer experience of 'Walk With Me In Hell' by Lamb Of God, and what on earth this has to do with Pride, music college, and a certain area of Reddit.Plus this week's additions for the Hate Crew Gaybar jukebox are ManiaCult, the eleventh (!) album from Belgian brutal death metallers Aborted, and Wolf Hex, the new record from Canadian riffsters Wormwitch.(Yes, this episode is later than planned. Real Life got in the way. Sorry.)
In episode 30 we're joined by a former alumnus of both Terrorizer & Rock Sound, Ben Crudgington. Títulos como “Truckload Full of Bodies”, “El Cuco” e “Worth Less Than Piss” sugerem a devastação a ser ouvida. Hva gjorde Dave Grave for å få tilnavnet? Here we go again metal heads with another hour madness and mayhem and today's show is a real mixed bag to say the least with tracks from Crown Magnetar, Axewitch, Insane, Chris Holmes, Strangeways, Helloween, Terrorizer and Savaged. We also have three tracks dedicated to the memory of perhaps one of the greatest composers of our time, the late great Jim Steinman who is probably best known for his collaboration with Meat Loaf on the iconic Bat Out Of Hell album and all three tracks come from that album. I anledning NRKs nye dokumentarserie, "Helvete - historien om norsk black metal", har Jernverket gravd dypt i intervjuarkivet. I 2009 traff jeg Hoest fra Taake på Hole in the Sky i Bergen. Les anmeldelsen her.

Black Crown Initiate are freakin' road warrior! We encountered "The Boys" a number of times over the past few years on one tour or another. Their most recent stop in town was their first headlining and their latest before their Century Media debut drops. So it was a good time to finally speak with them. We had a quick couple Lemmys with axe/vox Ash Thomas before we sat to talk BCI. We spoke of the new CM deal, we throw out our own ZZTop/Gillette challenge and share a laugh over a road story. Good times! In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we discuss the Ohio mass shooting/pornogrind issue and a very KISSish looking farm animal. Musically, we crank some indie BCI, the new Gatecreeper, new NoMas, Terrorizer, Lady Beast. Inferi, Magurdergrind, and introduce Ottawa metallers TripleMurder in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns!! Lee Harrison (Monstrosity/ Terrorizer). The very talented Lee Harrison talks career in Monstrosity, Terrorizer and session work with Obituary. The man is a living legend and an overlooked contributor to the storied legacy of death metal.
My good friend, music journalist and fellow musician, J. Bennett returns to discuss the iconic death metal classic “Slaughter of the Soul” by At the Gates. If you’ve been listening to this podcast for a while, you will notice that we typically go for the more left-of-center classics, but this one is undeniably an influential record that helped define the “Gothenburg sound” of the mid-90’s as well as providing inspiration for a whole legion of bands.J's work has appeared in Decibel, Revolver, Terrorizer and pretty much everywhere you can read about extreme music. He also wrote the "Slaughter of the Soul" entry into Decibel's Hall of Fame.Intro: “Blinded by Fear”Outro: “Suicide Nation” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
NY black metallers can be described a lot of different ways. Neo classical, avant garde, technical, all 'round bizarro come to mind. We just call it G.F.M. - Good Fuckin' Metal/Music!! This helacious trio are currrently terrorizing the nation on tour supporting their latest effort "Vile Luxury". Our newest RAMMer, "Big Willy", had his interview baptism of fire we he sat down with all three ITers: Ilya (axe, vox), bassist Steve Blanco, and skinsman Kenny Grohowski. Not to be outdone by the rook, Coreen contributed her own cool chat with returning RAM alum A Feasting Beast in an "Extended Indie Spotlight". In our "News, Views, and Tunes" we provide a PSA regarding respecting the women of the scene following a recent incident. Musically, we crank our guests plus new tunes from Terrorizer, Striker, and Extremity. Horns Up!! This episode is sponsored by Trve Kvlt Coffee. Pete and Chris continue the Halloween-themed episodes with a feature on killers and monsters in fiction and their real-life inspiration. It's an interesting look at what the creators of classic horror icons were influenced by to create the likes of Freddy, Hannibal, Ghostface, Jack Torrence, Leatherface, and others. Plus a live call in with CK to talk about the Danish bands, Mercyful Fate and King Diamond, and interviews with Lee Harrison of Monstrosity/Terrorizer, and Brian Ward of the Dark History & Horror Convention. There's much more mayhem to go around as Pete, Chris, and CK all share some common disgusting tales, and yet another destruction of a karaoke song. Sometimes I like taking the whole Open Metalcast headquarters music library and put it on shuffle mode. This morning I decided to record an episode completely made up of these tracks. The only rule was that it couldn't be something that I already played on the show (funnily enough one track didn't make the cut because of that reason). This episode features tracks from Lords of the Trident, Thicket, Raging Steel, Mindwarp, Vanagloria, Gangrel, Colossal Figures, Digger, Mental Waste, tao te kin, and Dr. Zilog. I'm a little worried that the forces of chaos are going to put me out of a job making these playlists. Perhaps the computers really are taking over. Presiona Play. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It was founded in 1987 by owner Jordan Cooper, along with Ray Cappo of Youth of Today, with the sole intent of producing the Warzone Lower East Side Crew 7". Within the year, they put out two more releases and a limited 4th pressing of Youth of Today's Can't Close My Eyes 7", which had been originally released on Positive Force Records, just for the two of them to trade for vintage G.I.Joes and other action figures. In the first three years, the label put out 23 releases and pressed approximately 50,000 records, and it has continued to release an average of 78 albums a year. Cappo left the business in 1988, to focus on his band Shelter and to start his own label Equal Vision Records (which he later sold to Youth Of Today roadie, former Revelation employee and friend, Steve Reddy), though his albums were still released by Revelation after that. The label put out several definitive hardcore and metalcore records in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with notable releases coming from Damnation A.D., Will Haven, Shai Hulud, Curl Up and Die, and Himsa. However, by the mid2000s, Revelation Records had seemingly fallen by the wayside, with very few releases between 2004 and 2006. However, the label is returning to its former stature as a premier oldschool hardcore label. RECORD REVIEWS Violent Reaction - Marching On Originally conceived and executed as a oneman project by Tom Pimlott on the banks of the Mersey River in Liverpool, England, Violent Reaction recorded a demo in 2011, an EP in 2012 and an LP for Painkiller Records in 2013. Soon after, Tom relocated to Leeds to assemble a full band with an end result that finds the lads playing straight edge, hardcore punk with an obvious oi influence. With a lengthy American tour with their brother band The Flex under their belt, Violent Reaction is set to make their Revelation Records debut with "Marching On." http://www.violentreaction.blogspot.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pages/ViolentReaction/177017079042937 http://www.revelationrecords.com/band/195 JUDGE - Bringin’ It Down Judge stood tall in the face of changing times while helping to transform the musical landscape around them. Porcell, Ferraro, Siegler and Pincus may have had a list of priors that screamed “milewide X’s on the backs of your hands” (Youth of Today, Death Before Dishonor, Bold, Side by Side, Project X, Gorilla Biscuits, Young Republicans, Violent Children, Schism Records/fanzine, etc.), but even as they remained true to the edge, Bringin’ It Down moved towards a more sinister vibe and further promoted the nascent collision of metal and hardcore, while setting the stage for the likes of Integrity, Ringworm and Starkweather. This, in spite of—or maybe because of—having to re-record the album after a subpar session at Chinatown’s infamous Chung King Studios. Not bad for a band that was originally designed to be a oneoff for Ferraro’s frustration with the “Edge ’til 21 Crowd.” https://www.facebook.com/pages/Judge/195626400586989 http://www.revelationrecords.com/release/228 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bringin%27_It_Down DROWNINGMAN - Rock n’ Roll Killing Machine Drowningman was a hardcore punk band from Burlington, Vermont, which was active from 1995 to 2005. Formed in the fall of 1995 by Simon Brody, Denny Donovan, Javin Leonard, Dave Barnett and Todd Tomlinson, the band was heavily influenced by a variety of bands including Deadguy, Unbroken, Shotmaker, Unwound, Sunny Day Real Estate and Promise Ring. This musical amalgamation helped to pioneer the modern metalcore and mathcore musical subgenres. The band was known for revolving membership and frequent record label changes. A first full US tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan was embarked on to support the release.[6] Soon after returning, production of the Rock And Roll Killing Machine record began in Washington, D.C. at the Salad Days Studio. A great deal of technical difficulty was encountered; Simon Brody had claimed in interviews the stressed work environment caused the tempo of many of the songs to rush and that record lost some of the previous efforts melodic counterpoint. Still, it was well received, earning a 10/10 in respected extreme music magazine Terrorizer and finding its way into many publications' top ten lists for 2001.Aside from making regular appearances at Hellfest, Krazy Fest, Monster Fest and The New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, Drowningman began touring extensively in support of this latest record. They toured with hardcore and metal bands as varied as Earth Crisis, Glassjaw, Shadows Fall, Darkest Hour and Twelve Tribes. However, projected gigs for early 2001 were curtailed when the group lost its drummer. By May 2001 road action was resumed with regular partners Darkest Hour on the "BroDown 2001" tour. http://drowningman.com/ http://www.revelationrecords.com/release/97 https://www.facebook.com/drowningman2014 Other Links and Info: Our Blog: Deathwish Racing - http://deathwishracing.blogspot.com/ Become a Mountain Bike Radio Member Email Kyle Email Mountain Bike Radio

Here is the tenth installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring a few interviews I did with bands I saw at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn this past May. First up is Death Toll 80K from Finland, who I talked to the day after their very awesome (and very last minute) set at Saint Vitus. They took me through the circumstances that led to them subbing in for Hooded Menace. Dan from Archagathus popped on the mic briefly to defend the honour of Terrorizer. I wish I could have gotten more of him, he was fantastically funny. The last part of the podcast is an interview with Elis of Birdflesh and The Arson Project. I had met Elis previously when the Arson Project played KL in 2012; it was pretty bizarre running into him again in Brooklyn, so I had to snag him for an interview. Our talk took an awkward turn when I brought up the Indonesian leg of the Obscene Extreme Festival that Birdflesh played last year, which was plagued with problems. The interview got a little tense for a while, but I appreciated hearing his take on the whole kerfuffle. Back when there were record stores, there were some places that sold compilation albums of different artists. Sometimes they were full priced, and other times they were either inexpensive or free. There's also certain magazines like Metal Hammer, Terrorizer, and PROG that also ship with compilation discs. I always look forward to these discs because they give me a chance to sample bands I might not otherwise hear. Our friends at Metal Libre have put together a series of (currently four) compilation albums showcasing some of the best of Creative Commons Metal Music. Lots of these bands have featured on here, but what's really great is there's stuff I haven't heard yet, and will check out later on. Similarly the folks at Irish Metal Archive have similarly put together a staggering compilation of artists hailing from Ireland. Definitely check out these compilations, and give these bands some support. And lastly there's a great project over at MP3Tribute.com where Jairus Kahn of Ad·ver·sary is compiling a tribute to Aaron Swartz and his legacy by compiling 100 previously non-CC albums and releasing them under a Creative Commons License. it's unfortunate this is in the face of Aaron taking his life, but we close out this episode with one of the tracks from this project.
