The conversation I had with Rachel was genuine. She has a great support system, and she loves being an independent author. Rachel grew up in Western PA and found her love of reading early in life, supported by her parents with frequent trips to the library and local bookstores. She stumbled into the bookish world in late 2020 and has embraced the lifestyle whole-heartedly, diving headfirst into the Romance genre, becoming a book reviewer and Bookstagrammer. In 2021, she changed careers, took a job at an indie bookstore, and started her first official novel-length writing project. Now, Rachel is getting an MFA in Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill University and juggling too many story ideas for one brain to handle. She's excited to continue to share Happily Ever Afters with you that bring the swoons, the spice, and the humor. Rachel had a dream to do what she loves, and this dream became a reality in 2022. Rachel's debut novel, "Carry Me Through Christmas," published November 10, 2022. Signed copies are always available for purchase. She continues to move forward with "Capitally Matched." Rachel's currently working on a new series of interconnected standalones featuring five brothers while she pursues an MFA in Popular Fiction at Seton Hill University. When not immersed in her bookish world, you can find Rachel hanging out with her husband and two cats, spending time with friends in the Washington DC area, and rooting for Pittsburgh sports teams. We are so excited to share this episode featuring one of our Pub Persuasion Discord besties! Kate Martin ( @katemartinauthor ) is one of the kindest people around. Her books sound glorious and her journey to publication is absolutely inspiring. But first, a bit more about Kate:  Kate Martin is a stay at home mom by day, a dance teacher by night, and a writer every minute in between. Growing up on the side of a Connecticut mountain in the middle of nowhere wasn't much good for afterschool shenanigans with friends, but it was spectacular for building an over-active imagination. She spent her childhood weaving intricate plots--none of which were ever without fantastical elements. After getting her B.A. in Elementary Education, with a minor in Psychology, she found Seton Hill University's Writing Popular Fiction Program, graduating with her M.A. in June '08, and again with her M.F.A. in June ‘13. She currently resides in a different part of the Connecticut countryside with her husband, two daughters, and food-obsessed cat. Her latest book, The Fallen, is an epic fantasy out with OutlandEntertainment June 20th, and is the second in the Mysts and Labrynths trilogy. So much of our modern life is built upon simplifying the complex. We reduce social interactions to likes and follows on social media and dilute the “news” in our favorite echo chambers. But Azar Nafisi warns that life is not simple, and the complexity found in great literature is ultimately liberating of the mind and essential to the health of our democracy. Nafisi is a best-selling author and professor. She released her nationally best-selling book “Reading Lolita in Tehran” in 2003, which went on the spend over 117 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. The book has been translated in 32 languages and won many awards such as the Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger, the Frederic W. Ness Book Award, Non-fiction Book of the Year Award by Booksense, the Latifeh Yarsheter Book Award, an achievement award from the American Immigration Law foundation and the Grand Prix des Lectrices de Elle. It has also been a finalist for the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for Memoir. Nafisi won a Persian Golden Lioness Award for literature in 2005, presented by the World Academy of Arts, Literature and Media. Kyle Stedman (@kstedman) reads the bad idea "Research Starts with a Thesis Statement," by Emily A. Wierszewski (@ewazoo23). It's a chapter from Bad Ideas about Writing, which was edited by Cheryl E. Ball (@s2ceball) and Drew M. Loewe (@drewloewe). Don't miss the joke: the author of the chapter is disagreeing with the bad idea stated in the chapter's title. Keywords: discovery, process, research, thesis, thesis-first research model Emily Wierszewski has been teaching writing for over ten years, most recently at Seton Hill University outside of Pittsburgh, PA. Her graduate work focused on nonfiction writing, including the study of what makes writing persuasive, as well as how people learn to read and write. As a professor, she's very interested in how her college students understand and have used the research process before coming to her class, including how their preconceptions about the purpose and process of research impact their attitudes toward and proficiency with college-level inquiry. She recently wrote a book chapter about how comics can help students more effectively engage with research in the writing classroom. Her Twitter handle is @ewazoo23.
